[Q] How to view a PC only kindle ebook on android. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I downloaded a kindle ebook for my finance class and its only viewable on my pc. When I tried to open it on my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus it said it was not compatible for either device. Is there anyway I can access my kindle ebook on my galaxy nexus and more importantly on the nexus 7?
Gracias
Note: Preferably i don't want to root my devices or remove the drm lock from the ebook but if i have to its not a prob.

What kind of file is the eBook?

Are you trying to push the ebook to your tablet via the PC or do you have the Kindle app on your device? Have you tried menu>sync & Check for items in the app? That should look for any purchases you've made on your Kindle account and queue them for download.
I wasn't aware there were PC only ebooks from Amazon. Did you get it from some other source than Amazon?

Has anyone discovered a way to add non amazon bought mobi books on the omnia7 via the kindle app. Would rather use 1 phone for all reading instead of having to use 2.

[Q] Rooted with Go Launcher, but can't read books

Rooted with Go Launcher, but can't read books. The Amazon Kindle application opens, but doesn't find anything on the device. There are books on the device.
If I switch back to the stock launcher, my books are there fine, and I can read them.
Anyone have this issue? Clearly a big issue if you rooted but still want to use it primarily as a book reader.
When you want to read your books, click on the old launcher and use it to read the book. Not a real problem. Being rooted is not an issue reading books, just Amazon Prime which you can fix with OTA Rootkeeper.
Why do you need OTA rootkeeper if you have permanent root?
Because Amazon Videos (Prime) doesn't work with root. You have to un-root to use it.
Anyone know if there is a way to access the stock bookstore when rooted? I'd like to be able to access the lending library but the store link in the stock launcher takes me to the web store and not the fire version. I am rooted but have temp unrooted using ota rootkeeper. Prime video is working.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

the way I did it was I downloaded the amazon kindle app from the google market. then I mounted my kindle as a disk drive in my pc and copy pasted the book files to the folder the app has for books. now all my books are there when I open the app
Yikes, it's worse than I thought. I assumed it was only in Go Launcher that there were no books.
But I switch back to the Amazon launcher, go into the book tab, or document tab, and none of the books I downloaded are there.
Music files are there and play with the music player.
Pictures are there and play with the gallery
Videos are there, and play in the video player
All the new applications I installed rooted in Go Launcher are there and work
but...the four books are there in the correct folder (books), I can see them when it's connected as a Windows drive, but they don't show up in the launcher under the Books or any other tab.
My wife will kill me. She wanted this primarily as a book reader.
Thanks in advance.
I just use the Amazon Kindle app from the Market to read books using Go Launcher for Tablets.
That didn't work for me either. When I click "On Device", it doesn't show me any of the four books.
Just so there is no confusion, I read these four book files (well, tested them) before starting the rooting procedure, so I know that the formats are OK etc.
This is really weird. My Kindle is rooted and I have no issues with Kindle books. All of my books are still there. So there were books on the device but after you rooted they are all gone?

Did you place them in the Kindle folder?
Edit: I just copied a book that I had on my Galaxy Nexus in the Kindle folder to the Kindle folder on my Fire and it showed up in the Kindle app.
The books are not physically gone, the files are all there, but they can't be seen with the stock launcher or Go Launcher.

Try reinstalling the Kindle app from the Market or clear the app data for the one you have installed.
This happens if you downloaded the Amazon Kindle App from the Android Market.
When you download the Android Market version it overwrites the stock version without saving your data.
The fix for this is simple.
[*] Go to Settings-->More-->Applications-->All Applications-->Amazon Kindle
[*] Click "Clear Data" and "Uninstall Updates"
If you did it correctly then it should've reverted back to the stock version(v4.1.2.12)
*But if that does not work, here the original stock version .apk:
LINK: http://db.tt/49Efe35z
Now you will have the stock version, but you will not see any books.
Don't worry though, because all books you purchase from Amazon are linked to your account.
*You need to use your PC for these next few steps!
[*] Log in to your Amazon Account and go to Your Digital Items-->Your Kindle Orders
Now you should see a list of books you have purchased for your Kindle Fire.
[*] Click on "Actions" and choose "Deliver to my Kindle" OR "Download and Transfer via USB"
IF YOU CHOSE: "Deliver to my Kindle"
[*] Go to SETTINGS-->SYNC and you should see your book appear.
IF YOU CHOSE: "Download and Transfer via USB"
[*] Download your book to your PC.
[*] After downloading, use your USB cable to connect your computer and Kindle Fire. Your Kindle Fire will appear as a drive on your computer.
[*] Copy your downloaded file from your computer to your Kindle Fire's documents folder.
IF YOU CANNOT CONNECT YOUR KINDLE FIRE TO YOUR PC FOR WHATEVER REASON:
[*] Download your book to your PC.
[*] Upload the book to Dropbox or the cloud storage service of your choice(eg. Box, SugarSync, etc.)
[*] Now go to your Kindle Fire and download the book.
[*] Move the downloaded book to the "Documents" section of your Kindle Fire.
Hope this helps!
Thanks

For anyone looking for a solution, I found it, at least I can now see and read all my books on the stock launcher.
All I did was uninstall the Amazon Kindle application, and somehow, that allowed me to see books from the Amazon default launcher.
I don't know if I can try installing again and if that will let me read both in the Go Launcher and Amazon Launcher. I will try and let you know.
Perfect. That completely fixed my problem as well. Thanks!

How to I get kindle books on my Nexus 7?

I am trying to find out how to install some of my text books from amazon to my Nexus 7 but am having problems. The books I am trying to get aren't supported by amazon because they only allow Kindle, Ipad, pc, or mac downloads for the book. I am wondering if maybe I just download for PC and move it to my tab it will show somehow. I am pretty noobish when it come to messing around with these devices. My tab isn't rooted yet but if its necessary to root to get these books I will. I am just hesitant to try to experiment because the cheapest of my books is 110 bucks.
I have moved about 600 books from from my Kindle library to my Nexus. If you have the mobi files on your desktop, download the Kindle app on your Nexus, make a folder called Kindle in the root directory of your phones storage, and drag the mobi files to that folder. Reboot the tablet, and they show up. Each of my Kindle books had 3 files per folder, the cover art, OPF file and the mobi file, I moved them all. Works like a charm.

Alright. The only thing I dont understand is when you say to put it in the root directory of the phones storage. Are you saying the device needs to be rooted for this file to be there?
Sorry, I am a noobster when it comes to this.
It also seems to already have a Kindle folder because I have the app already downloaded.

That means (on my Nexus 7, at least): /storage/sdcard0/Kindle (no, you don't have to root it.) And if, as you indicate, you already have the Kindle app installed, the folder is already there (on mine, it has a lower case "k").
In the Kindle app, you can download any of your purchases. Just make sure you go to the menu and select "Sync & Check for Items." I've never heard of a limitation on what devices you could download to. Do they show up in your Archived or All library? I would think they would. And they should have the little "download" symbol.
The book is called Campbell Biology if you want to see it. I haven't been able to find any other books like that.
http://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Biol...tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1344354876&sr=8-1
There is a link to it.
You can see how it states what devices it is for and it also won't allow me to send it to my device. I also noticed that it doesn't say the file type.
UPDATE: It appears to be a .azw4 file. Knowing that it isn't a typical mobi file could it still work?

That is a kindle edition book and it should appear on your kindle app, whether you're using kindle on your PC or android after you purchase it. Sign in to your kindle account, just hit sync and check for new items if it doesn't show up yet in your kindle app on nexus 7. After that, look under All Items, Downloaded Items or Archived Items. I use kindle also and I can download, open my text book on PC, Nexus 7 and my phone.
So I downloaded the sample and tried putting it in the kindle folder and the acw folder with no luck.

Yes it did but that time I was only using kindle on my PC so I just sent it to my PC when I purchased my last book. But after, I installed kindle on my phone, signed in to my kindle/amazon account and had no problem downloading and opening it. Hence, same for Nexus 7, no problem downloading and opening the book, which I have already purchased.

Are the .mobi files bound to a specific account? My wife wants to transfer 50 shades of grey to the nexus 7 from her phone, but my amazon account is on the tablet

I have actually called them a couple of times with no luck. The first person looked it up and just said that it wouldn't work. I tried getting info as to why from the second person but it became obvious that they are just there to answer phones and don't know much about anything other than telling you what the computer says.
After looking up that file type it seems that it is a proprietary format for textbooks that Amazon had been using for the last year. It is basically a PDF file with DRM to keep people like me from.... well you know.
The article that I read talks about how it can only be used with Kindle, IPad, or kindle for Mac and PC. It says something about it being released for Android but didn't give any dates. I know I basically just figured out my own problem but I hope this helps anyone else having this issue. In which case I found my books on www.coursesmart.com. Its a digital "rental" program that just sets your book to expire in 360 days from purchase. Not a terrible deal although I would prefer to be able to keep my books for reference.

I don't believe the mobi file is tied to any one account. I think even if your were to delete the mobi file from your device(or move it to another) you would still be able to download it from the account you received it from originally since it lists it as a book you purchased and still both enjoy it.

This is just a guess - haven't tried it: change your N7 amazon account to hers, sync it up to get the book. Let her read it, then change the account back to yours.
Another way, is to get the book, then see if by changing the N7 account back to yours, the book disappears, but I'm guessing it will. I've read of people not letting their actual Kindles sync (don't know if there's setting to allow only manual syncing, else just keep wifi off) to keep library & Prime books longer.

Have the devices been released yet? I don't think they have. Also, Windows 8 requires some pretty specific specs to run on a tablet, and I don't think the new ones fit the bill. Short answer: maybe, but doubtful.

Nook HD and HD+ updates
Nook HD and HD+ both will boot from SD. I'm not sure if this means the bootloader is unlocked or not. ICS seems fairly intact, so I'm not sure if it will be easy to work on.

They created Forums for the Kindle Fire HD way before those devices were released... I'm totally drooling over the 8.9" KF and the Nexus 10, but I suspect the Nook HD+ might be better for reading because of its aspect ratio. I really hope there's decent development for it!

Can be done with BN supplied SD cards, but I dont know if they are in any way signed or restricted.
Im throwing in my vote for the HD+. It isnt getting the press it deserves. The reviews out there are for the 7" HD, but i can tell you after 3 days of extensive use, the HD+ is a beauty. Smooth scrolling, virtually no stuttering. A little love from xda and this thing will be a dream come true.

nope, no way they would swap the OS now. everyone's apps would be forfeit and that would tick off a bunch of customers.it would be like if apple all of the sudden switched to android instead of iOS. Besides, i thought MS had a pretty strict hardware guideline and the nook hd+ only has 1gb of ram (i THINK MS requires all W8 tablets to have 2gb). Anyway the devices always have booted from SD for recovery purposes. I really hope there's a way to get gapps on these devices because they're super nice, they just need the play store to REALLY shine.

Yeah i just got mine friday, i'm loving it so far. the reviews for the 7" aren't really fair since the software wasn't ready for primetime but a day-one update fixed all of that. I hope XDA rallies around these new ones since they're so far above the previous models.
I presume that no one has cracked this yet, for CM or anything?
Here's hoping. I'm looking for a Nook HD or nexus 7 for Christmas. I'd love the Nook, I have a Nook Color with CM7 now, but if I can't get the functionality out of it, I'll have to go for the nexus.

I have the HD+ and can't answer the rooting and custom ROM question. But the device does have the option to enable ADB, so I was able to install apk's via adb (took a bit of work to get my computer to recognize the HD+). Anyway, I've been able to install (again via ADB, not rooting), the following apps to my HD+: Kindle, Amazon MP3, Chrome, Firefox, Flash. I installed Rdio, but the music wouldn't stream. I was able to access my Amazon MP3 cloud storage and stream my music that way. The Kindle app works fine..I tested visiting the store within the Kindle app, sending a sample to the app, clicking "Read Now" and having it launch the book correctly. Chrome and Firefox seem to work fine, and Flash works in Firefox. Also, by sideloading the Flash apk, I was able to view flash content in the built-in Nook HD+ browser. The biggest pain is that your sideloaded apps do NOT appear in the Apps drawer. You can only see them by opening the Apps drawer, then simultaneously holding down the volume + button and tapping the "Apps" header at the top of the screen. This brings up a screen entitled "Extras" and looks more like the normal listing of apps you would see. There are a few b&n dev apps, and it appears there is a copy of an Office suite there, too (can't remember which one).
Finally, it appears the HD+ is running 4.0.3, since the Nook SDK appears as an option under 4.0.3 in the Android SDK Manager.
Edit: I also installed Mantano Reader on the HD+. To add epub books to the HD+ via Dropbox, you need to EXPORT them to the My Files section of your internal sd card (didnt test using an external card). If you just open an epub file via dropbox, it will launch the reader app, but I found that once I closed the reader app, I couldnt access the book again (must have put it in temporary storage or in downloads). So the better way to gets books on the HD+ via dropbox is to export them. And after installing Mantano Reader, when I browse to Library -> My Files and tap one of my books, the device asks me which reader I want to open the book in. So once you install a 3rd party epub reader, you could make it the default reader on the HD+ if you so desire.
Try sideloading a launcher to see all you're apps. That's what we did w/ the NT before CelticWeb and rest go CM7 to run.
Go launcher and ADW worked best.

I got a Nook Tablet HD+ for its screen, and most importantly, its Micro SD support. Definitely better than Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for being cheaper and providing a SD slot while being cheaper.
My plan involves sideloading MXPlayer so I can play MKV files off of it AND if any dev feels generous enough to devote his or her time into it, to install custom ROM on it.
Would be grateful to have a dedicated forum!

[Q] Add MOBI Book to Kindle App?

Is there a way to add a MOBI book the Kindle for Windows 8 app? I tried looking through the installation files in the %appdata% folders, but I didn't see any .mobi books, so I wasn't sure where I would put it.
Nobody has found one yet. It's sad; the Kindle app for WinRT is by far the worst I've seen yet; even the one on WP7 allowed sideloading books if you could put them in the right place in the filesystem.

Weird. You'd think Amazon would just integrate with the File Picker, why not? The Kindle app for Windows RT actually looks nice, but there's just a bunch of issues that need resolved (weird space limitation, no transition between page turns, store doesn't work for me at all, can't side load books, even hunting through the file system...). It's too bad. Thanks for the help.
Does anyone know if this is possible now? I have acer iconia w510 and I want to add some mobi books I have stored on the kindle app but I cant find a way to do it
Perhaps you might want to give the "freda" app a try. I use it to read my "mobi" files.
