I am trying to find out how to install some of my text books from amazon to my Nexus 7 but am having problems. The books I am trying to get aren't supported by amazon because they only allow Kindle, Ipad, pc, or mac downloads for the book. I am wondering if maybe I just download for PC and move it to my tab it will show somehow. I am pretty noobish when it come to messing around with these devices. My tab isn't rooted yet but if its necessary to root to get these books I will. I am just hesitant to try to experiment because the cheapest of my books is 110 bucks.
I have moved about 600 books from from my Kindle library to my Nexus. If you have the mobi files on your desktop, download the Kindle app on your Nexus, make a folder called Kindle in the root directory of your phones storage, and drag the mobi files to that folder. Reboot the tablet, and they show up. Each of my Kindle books had 3 files per folder, the cover art, OPF file and the mobi file, I moved them all. Works like a charm.

Alright. The only thing I dont understand is when you say to put it in the root directory of the phones storage. Are you saying the device needs to be rooted for this file to be there?
Sorry, I am a noobster when it comes to this.
It also seems to already have a Kindle folder because I have the app already downloaded.

That means (on my Nexus 7, at least): /storage/sdcard0/Kindle (no, you don't have to root it.) And if, as you indicate, you already have the Kindle app installed, the folder is already there (on mine, it has a lower case "k").
In the Kindle app, you can download any of your purchases. Just make sure you go to the menu and select "Sync & Check for Items." I've never heard of a limitation on what devices you could download to. Do they show up in your Archived or All library? I would think they would. And they should have the little "download" symbol.
The book is called Campbell Biology if you want to see it. I haven't been able to find any other books like that.
http://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Biol...tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1344354876&sr=8-1
There is a link to it.
You can see how it states what devices it is for and it also won't allow me to send it to my device. I also noticed that it doesn't say the file type.
UPDATE: It appears to be a .azw4 file. Knowing that it isn't a typical mobi file could it still work?

That is a kindle edition book and it should appear on your kindle app, whether you're using kindle on your PC or android after you purchase it. Sign in to your kindle account, just hit sync and check for new items if it doesn't show up yet in your kindle app on nexus 7. After that, look under All Items, Downloaded Items or Archived Items. I use kindle also and I can download, open my text book on PC, Nexus 7 and my phone.
So I downloaded the sample and tried putting it in the kindle folder and the acw folder with no luck.

When you purchased your books did it have an option to send it to your android device? I can do that with every other book I found except this one.

Yes it did but that time I was only using kindle on my PC so I just sent it to my PC when I purchased my last book. But after, I installed kindle on my phone, signed in to my kindle/amazon account and had no problem downloading and opening it. Hence, same for Nexus 7, no problem downloading and opening the book, which I have already purchased.

Edit: So I tried to send the sample one for your specific book and it seems the option to send to my nexus 7 is greyed out. Try calling Amazon lol.
Are the .mobi files bound to a specific account? My wife wants to transfer 50 shades of grey to the nexus 7 from her phone, but my amazon account is on the tablet

I have actually called them a couple of times with no luck. The first person looked it up and just said that it wouldn't work. I tried getting info as to why from the second person but it became obvious that they are just there to answer phones and don't know much about anything other than telling you what the computer says.
After looking up that file type it seems that it is a proprietary format for textbooks that Amazon had been using for the last year. It is basically a PDF file with DRM to keep people like me from.... well you know.
The article that I read talks about how it can only be used with Kindle, IPad, or kindle for Mac and PC. It says something about it being released for Android but didn't give any dates. I know I basically just figured out my own problem but I hope this helps anyone else having this issue. In which case I found my books on www.coursesmart.com. Its a digital "rental" program that just sets your book to expire in 360 days from purchase. Not a terrible deal although I would prefer to be able to keep my books for reference.

I don't believe the mobi file is tied to any one account. I think even if your were to delete the mobi file from your device(or move it to another) you would still be able to download it from the account you received it from originally since it lists it as a book you purchased and still both enjoy it.

This is just a guess - haven't tried it: change your N7 amazon account to hers, sync it up to get the book. Let her read it, then change the account back to yours.
Another way, is to get the book, then see if by changing the N7 account back to yours, the book disappears, but I'm guessing it will. I've read of people not letting their actual Kindles sync (don't know if there's setting to allow only manual syncing, else just keep wifi off) to keep library & Prime books longer.

So I received my Kindle Fire for Christmas, and I'm in the UK. My uncle from the US brought it over for me, and I hope this post will clear up any speculation about what will and will not work on your Kindle Fire in the UK.
1. Apps: Apps need a US credit card, or you cannot download from the Kindle Store. This was not really an issue for me, as I rooted my Fire, installed the Market, and can download from there, not to mention sideloading APK file apps, which I was able to do without rooting
2. Silk: Works fine, uses EC2 cloud like it should
3, Book Store: Haven't tried it, but I was able to download books I had purchased previously for my old Kindle
4: Prime: You get a month's free of Amazon Prime, I wasn't able to stream videos from it, and I don't really care, I don't want to pay 70 dollars + a year for it.
Everything else works fine, and I really love it. The only other issue, was during the set up, there is no option to select the UK time zone, so you have to change it manually from the settings later. Oh, and all the temperatures in the weather app are in Fahrenheit. But it works like a charm. Got lots of working apps, Minecraft, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, and I'm using Calibre library to convert my PDFs into .MOBI format for reading on the Fire.
So all in all, it works pretty well in the UK actually! Hope this clears everything up for people in the UK thinking of getting it somehow. If I've missed anything please tell me!
Would also like to use the Kindle Fire in the UK but without rooting.
You mentioned being able to sideload apps ... but in order to do so, don't you need to download a file manager from the Amazon store (which a UK person cannot do)? and / or use an Android phone to backup an app?
I tried to download free apps from Amazon but even that is not possible and I don't have an Android phone .... is there any other way to sideload??
regards ....

Before rooting I was able to sideload by downloading directly using the Fire, then using the browser, going into the menu, and seeing my downloaded, from that file list you can launch APKs.
I'm using it in the Czech Republic and I can confirm that all the things mentioned by "georgeos" are valid.
If anyone is interested, here are some of my own findings:
- Books - you can purchase books from Amazon as long as you have a valid card number. You're eligible to borrow some of the books in the store with Prime subscription (limited to one book a month).
- Newsstand - same as above - you can check most of the magazines with a 14 day free trial subscription.
As far as the sideloading goes, it's pretty simple even without access to the App Store.
First you need to turn on installation of applications from unknown sources. Then use the browser to look for an .apk file of your preffered file manager (I used ES File Explorer since it was free and came highly recommended). Once the download is completed tap the status bar to show the recent notifications, then tap the downloaded .apk file to start the installation.

Ah yeah, sorry, forgot to mention that. But it is best to root the device, and install the Android Market, makes getting apps easier if you don't want to pirate the APKs, or if you're looking for the latest version of a free one, and it's always difficult to find a latest version APK. Also the Market shows ONLY the apps compatible with the device, so you don't have to go through the pain of downloading the APK and then it not working and having to uninstall it and delete it.
Hi - I've been searching around for about half an hour or so but can't find an "idiot's guide" (for that is what I need) on how to make my US Kindle Fire compatible with the UK app store.
I've asked Amazon directly a number of times but they refuse to help. I'm close to selling up and buying a UK one, so would really appreciate if anyone knew if there was a way to do this.
Many thanks in advance.

Are you trying to push the ebook to your tablet via the PC or do you have the Kindle app on your device? Have you tried menu>sync & Check for items in the app? That should look for any purchases you've made on your Kindle account and queue them for download.
I wasn't aware there were PC only ebooks from Amazon. Did you get it from some other source than Amazon?

Yeah I tried amd it says my kindle eBook 'isn't compatible with your device'. Also its a finance textbook that's around 14 MB in space but just becuz its that big doesn't mean I can only see it on my PC.
And yes I got it through amazon.
Is there a way to add a MOBI book the Kindle for Windows 8 app? I tried looking through the installation files in the %appdata% folders, but I didn't see any .mobi books, so I wasn't sure where I would put it.
Nobody has found one yet. It's sad; the Kindle app for WinRT is by far the worst I've seen yet; even the one on WP7 allowed sideloading books if you could put them in the right place in the filesystem.

Weird. You'd think Amazon would just integrate with the File Picker, why not? The Kindle app for Windows RT actually looks nice, but there's just a bunch of issues that need resolved (weird space limitation, no transition between page turns, store doesn't work for me at all, can't side load books, even hunting through the file system...). It's too bad. Thanks for the help.
Does anyone know if this is possible now? I have acer iconia w510 and I want to add some mobi books I have stored on the kindle app but I cant find a way to do it
Perhaps you might want to give the "freda" app a try. I use it to read my "mobi" files.
I just got a Nook UK in the last sale and it's my first one, so I'm a total noob to the e-book world.
However, I'm an android user and rom flashing addicted for long, so since I got my reader I've only been tweaking it and haven't actually read a word... haha.
So, already updated to 1.2.1, rooted, kernel tweaks and the whole lot. I haven't installed gapps on it to keep it minimal as possible, I'm dowloading the apks on my phone and installing via ADB.
So, on to the question:
by removing all these B&N apps does it mean I won't be able to sync/buy from their store?
I'm already getting to know Calibre and checking other places to buy books, but it looks like that if I remove the apps and one day would like to buy from B&N again the only option would be to re-install the apps in order to get the ebook or am I missing something?
Some of you disable all of the B&N apps, like:

Want to keep my NST minimal and remove all clutter, but:
how do you guys manage your ebooks and where do you buy them from without the B&N apps and what to do If I ever want to buy from them again?
Probably wouldn't be able to buy on device without having the B&N apps installed/enabled or maybe the standalone Nook Android app. Not sure if with that setup it'd be able to read DRM'd Nook books (probably wouldn't auto load them, but might be able to when sideloaded) but if it can't it's very easy to strip the DRM, and you can buy and download the book from your browser on your computer. Or if it's available DRM free in another store that might also be an option

I wouldn't mind having to download to my computer and then transfer to the reader, but at least the B&N store doesn't give me the option to download.
Anyways, when I dig more into the reading world I'll find out the best set up soon enough.
I'm not guaranteeing it'll still be able to read the DRM'd books as I haven't tried the guide in question, it's always been either a full root or stock for me. That said, the Nook desktop application allows you to download the encrypted file, and all my purchased books show a download option in many places, such as on the overview page and from the "My Nook" landing. Even if the Nook itself can no longer read them, again not saying it will or won't, stripping of the DRM is trivial, Python script (also a Calibre plugin available that incorporates it and will auto strip any Nook books you import, and you can set it to auto import from a certain directory so you could point that to, say, the place where the Nook desktop app downloads them) that computes the key needed to decrypt (requires you to enter the credit card linked to your B&N account since that's part of the hash used, but the CC# is never written to disk or sent anywhere) and you can use it on any device that will read epubs, including the Nook if it no longer decrypts on device as it'll be treated like any other sideloaded DRM free book.

Sure you can download your books to your computer. Logon to your B&N Account. Click on My Account at the top of the page. In the Digital Content section click on Manage Your Nook Library to get a list of your books with links to download them.

I got an UK Nook and for some reason it works differently. I got a book I bought from the e-reader, it shows on my account library at nook.com without option to download it and using the same login at the barnesandnobles.com it shows my nook connected to my account but the book does not show at the library...it looks like they made some weird distinctions on how to handle books bought outside US or something like that.
For testing, I added a free book to my library via nook.com, and it shows on my library at the barnesandnoble.com, so it seems that the books purchased in pounds won't behave the same way and don't have a straightforward way of downloading it.
I mean, I already took the file from the device and removed the DRM, but annoying that I'm not just able to download it.
I went to twitter to contact the kindle department @Amazonkindle to ask them why they don't supportin Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 as they do Android and Apple. What I mean is the cloud service for the items you upload which is a great feature and I didn't really think anything of it until my asus transformer died. I leaned to try and use my Lumia to no avail as well as my Windows 8 laptop. Then I proceeded to try it on my wife's iphone and it worked....... I know this may sound petty just reaching out to see if anyone else has this issue or knows of a WORKAROUND. I want to thank you for your time and feel free to contact Amazon as well!

I contaced Amazon support with basicaly the same question a few days ago, sitll haven't received an answer. My Question was regarding the fact that amazon allows purchases of Comics for the android and ios Apps of Kindle, but not Windows 8 Or Windows Phone 8.
I know with my T101 biting dust I cannot read my tech books now would hope that we as a community could come together on these issues.

In WP7, the solution was to use a file browser to sideload the content directly, which (mildly surprisingly) worked flawlessly; the Application Data folder was laid out very much like the root folder of an actual Kindle device.
In WP8, we don't currently have any file browser with enough permissions to write into (or even read from, actually) the relevant folder. The isolated storage explorer tools would work if the app were sideloaded, but that's blocked for retail (store) apps.
The only work-around I can recommend right now is to use a different e-reader app. There are lots of them on the store, most are free, some can even read Amazon's formats (use Calibre to convert the files otherwise) and they all support synching from some "cloud" provider (usually DropBox).
Understandable

I use dropbox and specifically uploaded them to Amazon truthfully to use one reader, and it would be sync'd across all my devices I thought. My Transformer just magically started working but I would still like this ability. I like calibre but with Kindle if you use your email address and have a pdf and put convert in subject it will change it for you. Less work on my local machine so to say. I just don't know why they would leave this out to users. I wonder does the BB have the cloud option if so this is really messed up.
