S-Pen Sensitivity - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

So I'm in love with my Note. I bought my wife the N7 for books and social media, but I really needed a productive tablet.
My question is about the S-Pen. I've never used the Note "Phablet" or any worth while stylus so I'm not sure if this is normal behavior or not.
When using S-Note, I cannot start a little line with a light press, it requires a firmer press to "activate" then I can adjust. It will also sometimes "skip" when trying to draw thin lines. I don't believe I'm pressing to lightly, because when it does this it isn't as the lightest line width, I'd say the line represents medium pressure, skips, then picks up low pressure.
It is also not registering if the angle I'm holding it at is to sharp. Anything after maybe 25-30 degrees off center is unreliable.
Just wondering what experience others have, and if this is considered defective.
EDIT: Wrong section, sorry everyone. Mods please move.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2

Ive writen using many different angles and i havent pressed hard for it to show up you can change the width of the line in settings

if this can help you, i posted something similar a while back: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876108
the answer is: you may have a defective unit. the nib shouldn’t move more than 0.2 mm. i got my Note exchanged, and th experience is now a bit better. sample variance could be quite high.

You may want to try switching out the tip to a plastic one. I get better results with that.

Little quirk of the s-pen

I've noticed something interesting with the s-pen. Having used a lot of phones that had a stylus, i am using the s-pen a lot. If I'm using the phone in bed and I'm lying down with the phone held above me, when using the s-pen, the phone will respond to the pen even if it's held up to a centimetre above the screen without actually making contact.
Anyone else noticed this? Still loving the phone though. It's clearly the best device i have ever had.

Mine doesn't do that. In fact, I can very lightly touch the screen with the stylus without it registering. I have to give it a little pressure. This is in any position. I saw a YouTube video of someone having the same effect you describe, though; I wonder if it's a stylus thing or a screen thing.

Same as you. I honestly wish it was a tiny bit more sensitive to be honest.

It's supposed to know the pen is there before it touches the screen so it can turn off the touch screen. That way your palm does not activate it.

The reason it is probably doing that is because of how Wacom technology is designed. To register interaction with the screen, the tip on the stylus is pressed down to make contact with the sensor inside the stylus. It then communicates with the radio inside the screen. So obviously if the stylus is held upside down, the tip will be making constant contact with the sensor. It could be that the stylus tip is slightly loose, so you should try another Wacom stylus.

I just confirmed this on mine. I used a piece of tape to hold the tip of my stylus depressed, and that caused me to experience the issue. Looks like some people have defective stylii.

Also, if you change the angle of using the pen, the ink start from higher (not from under the pen)!

I would venture a guess that this problem is the underlying issue with the minority of people who complain that the stylus is inaccurate. I wonder if it would be possible for Samsung or someone here to create a calibration function so as to adapt to how the user typically holds the stylus.
Or we could go this route...
<apple>You're holding it wrong!</apple>
I think the offset of the pen is actually purposely added to look more natural in most use-cases, but occasionally manifests itself strangely, like at strange angles. Here's the easiest way to reproduce the weirdness -
Turn off auto-rotation.
In normal portrait orientation, bring up the S-memo quick note double tap thing.
Write your name (or whatever) along the bottom of the quick note, holding the pen as you typically would. Notice how the strokes are drawn.
Without closing that note, hold the phone upside-down.
Now write the same thing you wrote before, along what is now the bottom of the note. Notice how the strokes are now drawn.
The strokes are offset in the direction that you tilt the pen (non-inverted control scheme ), but is also offset very slightly higher up the screen that the pen by default. This is so as to look more natural in normal use, because of course the pen does not actually touch the area that it is drawing on; the glass is in the way. The effect stacks somewhat strangely, however, when holding it, for example, upside-down.

Interesting! I assumed people were seeing differences just because they were using the phone in different ways, but if you still can't see it by doing this, I guess there actually is a fundamental difference in different phones.
Was there a calibration thing when we first set up the phone? I don't remember anymore. BTW, I'm on KJ4.
No, no calibration thing at the beginning. Still hoping for one.
One thing i thought i should be clear on. The stylus works perfectly fine in all other situations and it's only if the device is angled in that way the stylus behaves accordingly. Personally, it's not a problem for me. I still see this as the best device i have ever owned.

Very Clever
I still think that if the galaxy note displayed a little dot while hovering with the pen, it would be much better. With all wacom devices on windows, with a tablet or a wacom layer above a screen, the dot lets you see exactly where the next stroke will begin.
When you use a wacom pen, you don't start your next stroke based on the location of the actual pen on the screen.
Even with perfect calibration you still have the parallax effect looking through a thick glass layer. Looking even at a slightly different angle will cause the pen to be off again.
Instead, you use the dot.
Hopefully someone will be able to develop something to put a dot or a cursor of some sort on the screen.

Returning my Galaxy Note

I was really excited for GNote's release and grabed one from neweggs at $789 in a blink.
Having used it for three days, and tried really hard to persude myself, I finally decided to return it. just thought to share my 2 cents.
I am not in any bit concerned with hold it against my face to make phone call. It does look kind of strange, but I don't care.
to start with, I have perfect vision, and average size hand for a man. I can use Inspire 4.3 screen with one hand entirely and comfortably.
The main reason against GNote is the loose of single hand operation -- believe me, with GNote, you will need you both hands for 80% of normal operation if you are not one of NBA players. with your current phone, try to restrict you finger motion to its own side of screen, and you will see if you can live with it.
Since my fingers can barely wrap around it, it does feel insecure on hand, and need fingers to actually 'hold' it with a bit of force. the other option is to rest it weight mostly on little finger. either way, my fingers get tired quickly. with inspire 4g, most weight supported by wrapped fingers without much notiable force.
Unlike larger tablet, which can be held by bezel, GNote's bezels are too thin to hold securely. two long sizes are too thin to hold. one size with buttons. the the only size is the top (speaker phone side), but also too thin to feel secure or not to actually touch screen with any motion.
But if GNote offers unqiue functions , I am more than willing to live with two-handed inconvenience, unfortuantely,
a). high resolution + large screen. I read magazine Zinio on my android, not to mention web browse etc. therefore I care a lot about clarity etc -- and I have perfect vision. but, the high resolution means nothing in practics. yes, it is more clear, but in the sametime, if I do not zoom in, I still can not read in Gnote, no difference from in Inspire 4G. yes, for Zinio reading, I can tell individual characters in GNote now, while in Inspire 4G, they are blur. but I still need to zoom in in GNote to actually read. in others words, the 5.3 inch size stll can not offer un-zoomed reading, the characters are just too small, inspite of how high the resolution is. Once zoomed in, I can see no difference between inspire 4g and GNote. The same for web browsing.
In 7 inch one such as nook color, I do not need to zoom in and can actually read entire page.
movie watch is a better experience in Gnote, but had to compare back to back to feel the different from 4.3 inch screen. not big benefit.
s-pen is a useful function and it works fairly well. in fact, my struggle of whether to keep GNote is not for the large screen but my desire for stylus. but there are only two apps that can effectively use it. and as a content consumption device, I don't see s-pen is so useful that I can live with the incovenicne of the two hand operation.
Again GNote is a novel product with unique features. I am sure many people will find its function worth all the inconvenience and cost. but for me, I will go back to my humble inspire 4G for now. If Samsung puts s-pen on a 4.5 inch screen device with same width of current 4.3 inch screen phone, it would be no brainer for me.

That's odd - maybe it's because I have bigger hands, but the note doesn't touch my little fingers at all, usually. my hands are kind of in a handshake position, with my fingers slightly extended.
The note rests against all my fingers - in landscape mode I might curl my index fingers around the top of the note.

Yes the one handed operation is tougher but it's merely a very minor irritant compared to the many cool things I like about this device... One of them being size.
I can nearly use it one handed. Best way is to have one hand grip it while the other is used for typing our other tasks.

What purpose do you have for needing to be able hold and operate the Note one-handed? I really don't get this issue that some people are using as a negative for the Galaxy Note. Even the smaller 4.3" Galaxy S2 I use one hand to hold it and the other hand to operate. Outside of circumstances where you shouldn't be using your phone to begin with like while driving down the road why does the other hand need to be free during operation?

I wouldn't if you care anything about the $700+ device in your hand. Walking around using your phone in one hand while your carrying and doing things with the other is the reason so many people drop their phones. One user on this board has already shown how the screen on his Note shattered when he dropped his.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338544&highlight=car
If you want one handed operation for the Note while sitting at your desk then get the Samsung dock.
Dude.... You were born with 2 hands for a reason ----> galaxy note
With that said, im just a normal sized dude and i can quite comfortably use mine with 1 hand in all the same use scenarios as with my nexus s. Even with my nexus s i naturally wanted two hands for some things, and of course i still do with my note, but its not as if i feel i need 3 hands, as if this were the case it'd obviously become a problem

Now that was funny!
I *can* use the Note one-handed (I can wrap my hand around the Note and my thumb and "gesture" finger can just about touch), but I prefer, as has been mentioned in this thread, holding it with one and operating it with another.
yeh I find it quite annoying to not be able to use it with one hand.
especially when i am in public transport and have to hold onto something with the other hand. Its usually in public transport that I have to take my phone out and kill time too so thats really annoying.
So i can either use my note with one hand and risk dropping it, or i can use it with both hands and drop myself
So were you allowed to return it? I also saw that only exchanges are allowed on newegg for the Note. I was going to purchase mine at newegg but saw it cheaper on eBay.
I have no second thoughts about returning. This screen is just right for me web browsing, gaming, and watching videos.

So by your logic "better" isnt for everyone!?
Go big or go home....kidding aside, op is having buyer regrets and is rationalizing the return. Let the man/woman do as he/she wishes. But one advantage to having a high resolution device is it's ability to fit more information on the screen at one time, of course it'll look the same if it s zoom in.

he means the width of current 4.3 inch phones, not 4.3inch width
A different aspect ratio, like 16:9 instead of 16:10
The width of a 16:10 4.3" phone is around 2.28 inches
Why are people so concerned about using one hand. If you must use one hand then this phone is not for you, buy a smaller one. simple

Width of a phone with 4.3" screen. Thinner Bezel lets 4.5" screen fit where 4.3" did before.
I hear the OP's thoughts loud and clear. I thought long and hard the first few days I was using mine and wondered if I wouldn't be happier going back to a 4.3" device. The GSII is really a great device and I love its thinness and light weight; one handed browsing in bed is great, holding it between thumb and middle finger with thumb on bottom and middle finger on top, and fore finger used for navigation and link clicking.
Turns out I can effectively do this with the Note as well. And I actually do use the larger, higher res screen. 1/2 to 2/3 of the time I actually browse the web NOT zoomed in. It's just barely large enough for me to browse without zooming in. A higher res 4.3" or 4.6" screen would be tempting (galaxy nexus...) but I think I'd still have to zoom in for comfortable viewing.
I'm probably going to get the galaxy nexus for my girlfriend (the international version and put her in straight talk, not the lame ass locked down Verizon version) and switch phones with her for awhile, but I'll probably be fiending for my Note before long.

One hand operability

Just to quell any concerns of soon-to-be owners: It can be done. It can be used with one hand. I'm not a giant (about 6'1", slightly above average) and I'm coming from a 4S, so I'm not used to huge phones. You literally just have to grab it differently than you would a tiny phone.
I don't understand why all reviewers grab this phone like a murder weapon, and grip the crap out of it - and then try to use their thumbs to grab the adjacent corner of the screen. Wtf? Of course that's not gonna work. I can reach the top corner, but I splay my fingers across the bottom of the phone for better control. I'm sure the people who really love this phone and use it as their daily drivers figured that out within the first day and are happy as can be.
Long live the big screen.
I agree, in the beginning I found that it was a bit difficult to handle even with my large hands but as soon as I got used to holding it "like I'm supposed to", which took me like ten minutes, using it with one hand has been a breeze!
Now it feels weird to hold smaller phones, I tend to try to clench them with just my palm.
Hahaha that's exactly what I was doing earlier. They do start to feel like tiny toys

i think i may have to improve my dexterity on this one, lol.
But the thing is with smaller phone I can grip the other side with the 4 other fingers, while with my Note if I want to comfortably use it with one hand, my other 4 fingers can only slightly grab the back of the phone to allow my thumb to move comfortably (that is can reach the other side of the screen with my thumb), and I'm scared of dropping Note holding it like that

I have smallish hands but I can easily operate it with 1 hand but the 'safety level' of operating the device with my small hands is close to 0. Soon after I switched to land scape mode with the use of ADW EX and use the phone almost exclusively in landscape mode but with 2 hands mostly.
I don't really need it but people with one hand issues should try button saviour on market.

Haha yeah I know what you mean, I would say my safety level drops quite a bit. Walking around outside and holding it like that for a prolonged time wouldn't be the smartest thing to do..
And I don't know if it matters, but I bought the white one and what was supposed to be a glossy, slippery back actually provides a good amount of friction (for whatever reason) when I hold it.
I just bought the zagg shields for this, to hopefully add to that friction and not take away from it. I'd hate to put this in a case and have it be even fatter :/

Oh yeah, and in landscape, you can pretty much only hold it. That definitely requires two hands for input

Agreed, had it for a week now. All my typical things I use to do: one hand, in pocket, holding on to other things and phone, watching yottube in bed while falling asleep, music listening while doing other things so loose and simple touches - all work fine -- many better. There is something amazing that the larger screen ( see more, more is big, less zooming in and out) along with the real estate for interacting that this phone gives you - that is a game changer. Also the voice input tools are huge ( vlingo and gvoice) , work great with this build and dual processor -- so I am doing much more with voice ( most of my email writing , commands to get stuff or do stuff). And of course the best is the spen - its precision and accuracy are so MUCH better than touch. Touch is great for fast and casual, but sometimes you are sitting ont he couch or desk or standing leaning against a wall where you plan to do over a minute of browsing, scheduling, email answering - I find the pen rocks a these times. In fact see this page on xda, look at the smallest icons you want to hit ( next page, ...) I do not have to zoom for any of them, I can hit the all (like 1 pixel accuracy with the spen) - saves me huge wasted zooms and moves and misses. Love this phone - again it is a gamer changer.
I didn't have a problem using the Note with only one hand. But the problem is that if you're walking then it might drops easily. Si I found a great compromise, I bought a silicone cover which adds more grip. And it saved me once after I dropped my Note being on my bike. The Note didn't get any damage whatsoever.

Like some others, it's more about adjusting your grip and supporting rather than strangling the phone! It is a little tricky to text while walking etc but it's do-able.
I've actually started finding other phones with their tiny screens and keyboards difficult to use! ;-)

S-Pen Responsivity

Hey xda, i just got my GNote and i was hugely excited for one Feature: The S-Pen
I imagined it to be like the Wacom Tablets i used, barely Touch needed to respond but instead i feel like i got a faulty Device. How does your S-Pen react? Does it respond under its own weight, does it feel naturally to Touch or do you actually need to Press on the screen quite a bit? I feel like the Pressure of writing with a Normal Pen on Paper is needed for it to respond, natural while Writing or Scribbling but weird when trying to type or navigate through Menus. I cant seem to find anyone else reporting this kind of Problem, i was on the Latest stock Firmware and now on Rocket Rom GB, no change. Also is there an Test App to show the Pressure on the Pen? (Since its 128? levels Pressure Sensitive.)
Please help and tell me if i should get a new device or if this is normal.
Thanks in advance.
With mine, sometimes the phone reacts to the s-pen close to, but not actually touching the screen. Sometimes I have to do what I'm gonna do, then pull the pen quickly away from the screen to keep from another action being performed.
Mine has the same problem of not being responsive, and I can't for the life of me get it to be pressure sensitive. On top of that it lags quite a bit. I am hoping that it improves with ICS update, but I am not holding out much hope. I purchased it cause of the S pen, but having owned it a while, I would keep it without the S pen.
I don't have any of the problems mentioned, the s pen works smoothly without having to use much pressure, what apps are you guys using?
All of the standard Samsung apps work fine i.e. s memo etc
I use my Note to take handwritten notes on a regular basis and write at my normal handwriting pace using 7 notes from the market in cursive mode and it works flawlessly. I do not have to apply much pressure when writing.
I think you guys must have faulty units.

look carefully at what you're writing and you'll notice the s-pen is off buy ~1-2mm. If you still can't see it change the line thickness (of the pen) to as low as possible then look carefully. It gives the illusion of being more accurate with a bigger line size.
Here's a thought...
Why don't you all SEARCH first, read the numerous threads on this very same subject, then purchase the app TOUCHSCREENtuner Pro. Then you can set the s-pen to write EXACTLY where you want w/o any left right up down error. I believe you might also be able to calibrate the touch pressure, but I'm not positive about that feature.
I bought the app the day it was released and have no complaints about the app price or the s-pen functionality. Try it!
The search button is your friend.

It seems there is a large range in quality of s-pens. Many people report being able to write without the pen even touching the screen (pressure transducer triggered prematurely), and some report having to push too hard. Mine is just right. I think others should request s-pen replacements if their pen is either too sensitive or not sensitive enough.
i haven't ever had problems with the s-pen, but now i have the same named before. it's only before the update to LC1. maybe the rom has some wrong parameters about the s-pen. if it continues, i think i'll downgrade to LB2

TouchScreenTuner Pro has a "Touch Sensitivity" Setting. Recommended setting is 25. I have it set to 20 and s-pen writes with almost no pressure at all.

Here's another thought.
According to the description, it also requires root, which some like me do not have.
I exchanged one pen under warranty. The second one works also like crap, but for this one i really have to push on screen. Crap.

happy with the S-Pen, if yes explain

I am NOT very happy with my S-Pen because I have to press REALLY hard before the S-Pen touch register on the screen.
This makes the following very hard to do and not practical:
- Taking notes: kinda hard trying to take notes when I have to keep "jabbing" the screen really hard
- Drawing: forget about the pressure sensitive feature, there is only one for me --> press really hard!
I tried replacing the S-Pen (bought one from my local Fry's Electronics), no go.
How about you? Can you use the S-Pen on practical day-to-day basis...or this is just another "gimmick" for you?
I don't have to press any harder than I would with paper and a pencil. Although even now and again it will stop writing, like show a space between two lines because I didn't press hard enough. A lot of peoples are apparently too sensitive sometimes and will start to write above the screen... Samsung seems to have screwed up a few things with the note

Looks like you have a problems with touch screen.
I try to use it. But always end up shoving it back in it's holder and just tapping out texts the old way.
Find it difficult to write with anyway, it doesn't flow naturally and seems a little behind all the time. Not got use to how fast or slow to use it.
The S pen is ok. Its not as good as I thought it was and I actually only use it to make rage comics and post them on 9gag.
Its not very useful for taking down notes on the spot

My Problem is as follow :
There are 2 zones in my screen that don't respond to the pen at the First time,
I attached 2 screenshots showing :
The First with the blank untouchable 2 zones,
The second, is the same try, but I added some drawings later with my finger.
So this means that my screen is OK, and May be something is wrong with the S pen.
Any body experienced the same issue?
Sorry for the second screenshot, The volume bar came in
But you can clearly See the cercle with the + incidents. At the buttom zone.

I tell you what,
Even If I stayed a month digging, I would'nt guess!
Thank you Thank you Thank you so much.
You saved my note
The First thing I will do now, is to throw my case away, and look for a non magnetic one.
Take a look at my thread, That could interest you:

My S Pen works fine for writing and drawing. It's basically the same as writing with a pen for me in terms of pressure. Granted, it is thinner and a little less friction on the surface than pen and paper.
I write a lot on whiteboards for work and it is a little similar to that for me. When writing on a whiteboard, you don't anchor your hand on the surface like you would with paper.
Sometimes if I want to draw very accurately, I will anchor my writing hand on the fingers of the hand holding the phone that stick out from the right hand side. But I find writing like this slower.
I use the S Pen a lot more than I though I would before I bought it. I originally thought it would be a gimmick and just wanted the big screen, but I use it a lot for taking handwritten notes in FreeNote+ (I find this quicker than dealing with text conversion and auto-correction) and also find it a lot more accurate for drawing and photo editing.
I also find myself using it for Swype quite a lot. It's quicker than using my fingers. I think because there's less friction and you have a longer reach, so you hand doesn't actually have to move as much.
Also, the accuracy is excellent for some games like Fruit Ninja and Deer Hunter.
It works well for me. Though, need to get a bit of used to.
I use it mainly for taking notes...
I use mine when I am wearing gloves. No need to remove them.
I use it for taking notes an play DrawSomething! I love it. Everybody prases my drawings and at several iPhone players say they envy my Note and wish they had one

Those who enjoy using the on, do you see any issue with it? I.e. Pen not registering in screen, must press hard, etc.

useful
I find the S-Pen incredibly useful whenever you want to write something down on the go.
I find it much faster to take out my phone and launch a smartly-placed app to start taking a quick note (phone number, adress, any work-related post-it...) rather than searching your pockets for something to write on and asking for a pen (though i still always carry one on me )
The trick is then to process the notes and not just leave them in that folder you never go to. Well, that just takes a little discipline.
As for good apps, i've only tried a few but i think the first important thing to look out for in such an app is it's capacity to transform you're wavery note-taking skills into a nice smooth handwritten text on the screen. The S-Memo tool does it pretty well but i would recommend something more like Papyrus (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580716&highlight=papyrus) which has some pretty useful vector-imaging capabilities.
EDIT : I forgot to add that the s-pen is meant to work without pressure on the phone (though it still requires a minimum of contact), and works flawlessly on mine (i don't use cases or covers to protect the phone, i just take care of it.). Anyone needing to press hard on their phone for the s-pen to work has a problem, either with the phone or the pen. Consider having it checked.
I don't use it for all tasks, because that would just make things much harder. It's good for playing basic games though, like Draw Something, or just any other game where it feels better to use the S-Pen.

No, I don't have such problem. Sometimes, I find it a bit sensitive than I had hoped.
If you have to press REALLY hard for it to register, it might be a good idea to go to a shop and test one out to see if it's the same as your unit.
Maybe try and test their S Pen with your phone to see if it's a problem with the S Pen or the screen.
I think the spen is to small for 1 handed users. But works perfectly fine for all spen activities.
