N7 undervolted CPU - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have underclocked my CPU at 1GHz and undervolted it to -125mV and its working perfectly stable. Is it safe to undervolt even lower or should i be satisfied?

I see no reason why it wouldn't be safe. From what I know about overclocking is that worse case scenario is that it might make your tablet become unstable.

More than likely it will reboot and reset values if something goes wrong. There's no harm in testing lower values so long as you don't set it on boot.

so.. your device is now running on negative voltage? does that mean its producing electricity instead of using it?

Each CPU is unique, it should detect a fault and just reset to stock voltage table

Lol I meant -125mV taking the stock values as starting point. Not from 0. And that's how everyone using System Tuner refers to it..

ahh.. then thats normal. if you get freezes or sod then its too much undervolting for your device. also, to much undervolting can actually lead to more battery drain.

You can lower it as much as you can the worse that can happen is that it reboots because the cpu required more electricity then it could get.
Lower it as much as you can is the best you can do

OC'ing SGS

Hi there,
I actually want to know if it is harmfull to OC your SGS to 1.2GHz. Ofc it's better to run stock but is it of any real harm and how do you OC? I had a quick test with Galaxy Tuner and I must say when I use my phone heavily 1.2GHz is better. So if this is safe and done easily I would like to do this . Thanks in advance!
Well that seems like a small overclock, so if you have setcpu to your minimum with screen off, it should be OK.

Alright and how long can i use my phone when its on 1.2? Also next to that my phone is in a leather case when not being used so cooling will be a bit harder. Some more information from other people plz? I just want a consensus . Thanks for the quick reply.

my SGS motherboard burnt due to OC....
1 day while i was playing dungeon defenders with OC to 1200, with charger ON. suddenly the phone off it by itsself..
sent to service center, they said motherboard burnt!!!!
lucky they replace the board for me which still under warranty.
so high chance i think is the OC that cause overheat n burnt it.

No one can say for sure what would happen when you push a chip beyond its design parameters. Not all chips are made equal. Usually the standard speed rating is what all chips passing QC should be able to operate at. However some chips may be able to operate at higher speeds without ill effects while others may fail catastrophically even with a slight increase in frequency. So its anyones guess...
Frankly I dont see the need to overclock right now. What ROM are you using ? Flashing to a newer / better ROM can give you a bigger improvement than what 200Mhz can give you on a laggy unoptimized ROM, so why risk it ?? .

The fact you where charging, and playing a game probably had more to do with it than your overclocking.

Hmm I'm running docs mod v9.9.5 XD with speedmod kernel and twlweaks enabled. So it pretty fast already however with the oc there is just less loading time. But you are saying that its useless?

it depends. i personally use tegrak overclock and for battery saving, i use overclockwidget. my sgs has been going for 2 days in a row with battery life only at 48% even with moderate usage(making smses, playuing games occasionally, etc.)
Hmm alright, these apps seems legit. What are your settings with these apps? Or should I use setcpu?

If the phone reaches a certain temperature, the phone stops charging, so i dont think playing a game and charging at same time is the culprit.
Granted that the phone would heat up A LOT quicker than usual, but being so hot, the phone wouldnt of been charging even with the charger connected.
there is now way of knowing whether overclocking is dangerous. Personally i think it is, you have to modify the kernel, modify system settings, modify battery voltage.
None of this is recommended, but we do it at our own risk...
Its as dangerous as running a custom ROM or LagFix. some devices are fine, some brick and burn to a crisp.
So choice is yours

i do the same for my x10 n the phone running just fine.
in fact, before i sent my i9000 to samsung for warranty claim, i pass the phone to a local shop, the tech told me the OC cause the board overheat, then burnt it....

Actually tegrak oc works fine. ocing at 1.3 will crash first time but not crash anymore after the first time. ocwidget is not really useful for ocing but just to same battery life. when not really using my phone i will set it at 100mhz-400mhz. you can play angry birds on stock rom with little lag.
So you're saying i can oc.... but im running setcpu. I can OC with setcpu right? That brings another question when my screen is off what setting should i use for setcpu? In other words what is the minimum frequency?

100MHz is fine for the minimum frequency (for me at least) - this may vary between phones, give it a try.
On the subject of over-clocking though, you should take a step back and ask yourself "How much do I really need those few milliseconds less to load up Angry Birds".
I would suggest that Samsung did more testing than anyone on this forum.
All that said though though I take my phone up to 1.2 sometimes for ****s and giggles & to shut up smug iPhone fanboys

No. Don't set set setcpu to anything below 400mhz because when the galaxy slips into idle mode it cn sometimes be difficult to wake up
. I'd imagine such a low clockspeed would encourage such behaviour. I set my minimum at 400mhz and max at 800mhz. Spot on.

A bit off topic but gingerbread official or custom? And my phone works perfectly fine. No hard to wake up syndrome.

Undervolting the GT-N7000 for better Battery life

Hey there ,
so i wanted to share share my awsome Undervolting results with you
At first im running on Chasmodo's latest CM 10.1 i really appreciate his work ! I use the latest CM 10.1 Kernel.
With his rom and this voltages u find under this introduciton text i could get nearly a month with Standby time
(without doing anything , Wlan turned on , Data off) i attached a screenshot (29 Days and 5 Hours sorry for the German language)
Every day i plug my N7000 out from the Loading station its 5am on 3pm i lost 1%.
to change the Voltages i use SetCPU (full version)
1400 MHz
1200 mV (Stock: 1350mV)
1200 MHz
1100 mV (Stock: 1275mV)
1000 MHz
1000 mV (Stock: 1175mV)
800 MHz
925 mV (Stock: 1100mV)
500 MHz
900 mV (Stock 1000mV)
200 MHz
800 mV (Stock: 975mV)
So i dont know my Voltage group sorry guys , if this values are not working just go in 25mV steps lower from your stock voltage
until the CPU gets unstable or crashes than u know that u cant go lower just do this with every clocking !
I also used this voltages on XXLSC Ultimate Rom with the HydraCoreNirvana Kernel i had fantastic results too but not that good like i get with the Asylum CM 10.1.
PS: Just this Voltages wont give you very good Battery life if your Rom / Settings is/are eating your battery. If you get better results with
lower results (stable) just go ahead and post it but im sure this values are nearly the lowest stable u can get

Its [U]impossible [/U]to hard brick your device with Undervolting , you only could get a soft brick if you use (Set on Boot) and your voltages will crash your System after boot. thats easy to fix just after the phon booted up fast go into SuperSU and delete the root rights for your Undervolting tool.

I think you should say which Voltgroup (A, B or C) your note is. Because those freq are really low (I think too much low for my note, that's voltgroup B).
Do you remember which voltgroup has your note, when you installed hydracore kernel?
Better i would buy a spare battery rather than spoiling my devices performance. We arr not in 1000BC with no electricity. Sure every one can charge a spare and can switch it.

Btw just try the voltages without autostart and u will see if your system reboots or if it works if not just go in 25mV steps higher :highfive:

Why ?
I cant get your argument my performance is the same speed while im gaming browsing same performance than before .. no impact , drops .. a spare battery ? So what about i dont want to switch my battery ? there is no need for it my battery stays alive for atleast 2-3 days when im doing something with it .

It's a feature of the hydracore kernel only I think, because its read a particular value (something about mainboard and/or cpu) and the kernel automatically apply dedicated undevolt values. You could see it in system information, where hydracore kernel is detected. Without it, I think you can't do anything :/
Anyway, sincerely I remember some time ago I tried to lower my already undervolted cpu voltages, and I got freezes. I will try to go lower a bit, hoping it will works. A very important thing, is not only the lower battery drain, but also the lower cpu temps.

I bought rom toolbox full sometime ago, when there was sales. If I remember correctly, there is a section relative to the cpu control, but I don't remember if it was undervolting capable also. You should start to search it from there (I'm sorry, I don't have the app installed anymore, so I can't help you properly... In case, use voltage control app)

Yes, you're right, I just checked (installing my bought pro version) and it hasn't the uv features. Anyway, as I suggested, he can use voltage control (even if I don't know if his kernel support the uv/oc)

What do you mean by Rom Toolbox doesn't have voltage control?
Tap kernel tweaks, then any frequency and you'll find a voltage slider in there.

Maybe it depend from the kernel I'm using now (philz 3.99 on BurtRom tw rom) but I can't able to do what you said. I checked on rom toolbox pro again, and I didn't see any uv feature. Just goverors/kernel tweaks (like vm or fs features) or profiles management... Nothing else.
Anyway I'm using tegrak ultimate app to Undervolt my cpu and gpu, and it works perfectly, so I don't miss so much that feature.

I don't know - I am not sure if Undervolting could hard-brick or damage the hardware but back then running GB roms I had undervolted FM Kernel and there was trrrr trrr trrr like sound from my Note.

never had any problems and just logical cpus could brick if you give them too mutch voltage , if you give them less voltage the system only can crash your sound could have been beacuse it crashed so really u cant hard brick your device with undervolting ... maybe a softbrick if your unstable voltage settings are on autostart.

no need for a custom rom mate , you just need a custom kernel wich is able to uv for example HydraCoreNirvana

Hey there , you cant uv with Philz kernel just read his thread check his FAQ there hes writing that hes not supporting
oc/uv its just a repacked stock kernel
use HydraCoreNirvana but when you download the kernel check that its the OC version if not than you cant change your voltage like with Philz kernel.

Just use tegrak ultimate Overclock app. I bought it because I think it's the only who give you the possibility to Undervolt the gpu also. Initially, philz kernel wasn't supported, but now it is. I undervolted my cpu setting the values that I had using the hydracore kernel oc. And today I lowered them of another - 25mV also. Everything works nicely until now

Nice attitude you are showing there. Oh, there is plenty of power, let's waste.it! Really, that kind off attitude is definitely going to make the world a better place
What's more why do you think undervolting does influence the performance? It only influences the power consumtion and if you go too far it does render the phone unstable. But it certainly does not in-, or decrease the cpu's performance.

Yep tegrak definitely does the trick with PhilZ kernels. I have been using it for at least 8 months now and my phone is undervolted too. Only the highest cpu state is overvolted because I overclocked it to 1552 MHz instead of 1400.

Please explain why you overvolted AND overclocked the highest cpu state. Doesn't this shorten your batteries performance?
Did you changed cpu governor or something else (like screen off profile to reduce CPU) to achieve 1% battery loss at 3pm?
And was that with mobile data on?

I overcloked the highest cpu state from 1400 Mhz to 1552 Mhz because I want more performance. And because my phone became unstable with the 1552 Mhz and the standard voltage. So now my phone saves energy when the lower cpu states are active and it has a bit of extra power at the expense of battery life when it needs the most processing power. All in all that gives me better battery life than with stock settings and a snappier device when needed. For me this is the ideal solution.

Annoying issue with core scaling...

I know many will probably just ignore this bug, but I can't because just knowing it's there is pestering. Anyway the GPU is not functioning properly ever since 4.2.2 . Its frequency isn't dynamic.
I would like if some volunteers with faux clock or another GPU reading app could confirm if they have the same issue on 4.2.2 .

On demand doesn't entail a static frequency. Previously it would drop to 128 or 200 but now it sticks to 400... That is definitely not normal behavior for this governor. I only had faux clock open and I doubt that app would be GPU intensive.
And this is a problem for me because the the back is noticeably warmer than before despite me having a max of 1ghz and eco mode.

Dunno may be it's using some kind of low power state instead, I'm using faux stock enhanced kernel and mine is cool at the back with just normal use, also getting great battery life.
Mine only gets hot with heavy gaming or by just browsing with 3g on.

My issue is that it sticks to 400 which is high state. The only time it changes is when I set it to 487, it'll switch between 487-->400 constantly. Something is triggering a load but these tests are on fresh installs. It's generating heat which isn't good for batteries, especially non removable.
All these issues with my nexus are seriously making me reconsider my purchase -_-

How safe is overclocking?

I am experiencing lag on real racing 3, on high graphics. If I overclock to say 2ghz on cpu, will the tablet be stable enough? Should I undervolt ( and does it actually make any difference on temps)? I want to overclock but not at the cost of huge battery drain, can some1 recommend me a good kernel and some stable oc steps?

Are you running a custom ROM and kernel? I play RR3 daily and have NO lag. AOKP PUB ROM with ktmanta kernel, at 1.7mhz CPU and GPU OC to 720. Runs great.
Most OC is safe, issues are really with battery and overheating. I've run for long periods at 1900 just fine.
So there's no way the tablet will melt down because of the heat? Does warranty cover that? Assuming they don't know it was overclocked, which they couldn't because the device would be dead, right? I guess they don't bother to repair it and see if it was rooted.
LE: btw did you manage to safely undervolt? Even a -5 gives me reboots on most freqs.
Any time I try to use the app from the store to set the graphics mode it causes problems. Running RR3 without it works fine.

Take a look at the KTmanta thread. KTmanta is a great option for what you are after, he notes and codes distinctions between clocking and thermal protection, plus unless you lock the settings, they will reset at reboot!
If you tell Google you messed it up from some sort of tinkering, no - they won't help you.

I am assuming you must be using the KTmanta kernel right? I thought it was the only kernel right now that allows for user control undervolting. Trinity has a static -50mv value set on all frequencies by default. You should be able to undervolt just about everything. Getting lockups at -5mv lets me think there is something you are not doing correctly

The nexus 4 is definitely a great phone for a low price.But people are not buying this phone because of this THERMAL THROTTLING.so,people listen nexus 4 even runs smooth with thermal throttling going on.so, this fix is for people who just dont want thermal throttling.Before we start,this fix requires ROOT and a custom recovery.And a custom kernel needs to be flashed.so if you do any damage to your phone by doing this,I'm NOT RESPONSIBLE.
So first download the faux kernel for nexus 4(codename mako. if you see mako on faux website its for nexus 4) from here: Faux's website which i cannot post because im new to XDA. you can find it by googling for faux kernel website.I recommend the TBM kernels such as mako-jb-kernel 016 tbm which lets you overclock CPU to 1.83 Ghz.But theres also TBU kernels which support overclocking to 1.94 GHz.
Step 1 now download a faux kernel of your choice.
Step 2 paste the kernel to your mobile
Step 3 Boot into recovery mode
Step 4 Wipe cache
Step 5 Wipe dalvik cache
Step 6 Install .zip kernel
Step 7 Reboot your phone
Step 8 Now you have to buy the faux123 kernel enhancement program from play store(this app is from faux and this has intelli-thermal built in it)
Have fun.the faux app lets you select CPU frequencies also

With his enhancement app yes you can control throttling but the problem is that because the phones CPU is getting way too hot, so increasing the throttle threshold or limit basically makes it so when your gaming, it makes things smoother however your CPU is burning faster.

it throttles to 1.3 or sometimes to 1.2 ghz when temp is 37C and to 1.1 ghz when temp is 39C

No it has a thermal manager which controls the heat.if it heats up it automatically turns off 1 or 2 cores so that means 2 cores wil still run normally but the other 2 cores will shutdown.

meh.. you have root? disable throttling then, both battery and cpu throttle, then go on enjoying your device.

i always turn off throttling, on every device i own(ed). they all live long lives, and are the best performers around(for their model). they never ever got damaged because of it, and im an extrely heavy user. my n4 has had all throttling disabled since jan 14th, and its still going strong. the difference is that i never complain that my phone turns down cpu speed, or does my phones performance get slowed down.

I agree with you.And who dont agree with me,just know that your CPU will not be burned.Cause Fauxclock has a thermal manager of its own named intelli thermal.

Yes, but if you disable it to have maximum performance clearly you're not throwing s*** , which in turn in the long run may burn your CPU

The nexus 4 throttling is caused by the battery reaching a certain temperature not the CPU. It's poor design/cooling system causes heat to build up which raises the temperature of the battery. Once it reaches a low 37 degrees the cpu/gpu are downclocked even if they are well within their limits.

the n4 has a battery temp throttle AND a cpu temp throttle.
i generally disable both the battery and cpu temp throttles, but leave both safety temps as is. for those that say "oh, the extra heat will eventually ruin the phone".. the temp doesnt get any hotter than it does when you normally use your phone, the difference is that you dont get throttled. and even if there was extra heat because of, im not planning on having my phone for the amount of time that the extra heat will take to ruin the phone(years).
