User certificate bug? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought my nexus last Thursday at my local Office Depot. Since then I've had the worst time trying to connect it to my college's wifi. They have an instructions wifi where you download your personal certificate to connect. It worked with my old Xoom but wouldn't connect for the life of me..
So today I decided to visit the infamous tech department where they struggled to find a solution. The leader came over and noticed it was a nexus. He said I wouldn't be able to connect because there is a bug in the software and I won't be able to connect until Google updates the software.
Can anyone else confirm this?
I'm tempted to leave stock and install a custom rom to see if it makes a difference.
So if anybody knows anything about this it would help me greatly and save my phones data connection from tethering.
Thanks in advance

Wifi Problem

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=07bbaac95aef0a15&hl=en
The above link give an explanation of wifi problems that at least some people are having... three have mentioned identical or similar problems in the Google Help forum. The issue is that wifi worked initially, but now it isn't working on my phone. In my case I'm unable to get any results when I do a scan of available networks, and I've tried to manually assign an IP and connect that way without any success either. In other cases listed in the above link, people are able to still see networks after performing a scan but never connect to those networks. All this is after being able to connect at least once before.
Anyone have a similar issue with wifi? Also, does anyone have any idea on what to do about this issue?
i am having the same problem with my wifi. any chance rooting had to do with this problem?
I have a different kind of wifi problem. It seems to work fine everywhere except work, where we use Cisco wifi access points.
It is only is a problem with Android devices, mytouch 3g, g1, and now the nexus one.
My Touch Pro 2 connects fine.
Looks like the android devices get connected, and even get an IP, but can't browse the web or ping any network devices.
Really strange.

This is my suspicion. I think in the rooting (or the custom rom?) thread someone said rooting screwed the wi-fi, and he had to do it again and then it's fixed
I haven't rooted my phone yet, and I still have this problem. I have installed a ton of apps though... although I don't know how that could be the problem. Is there an easy way to wipe the phone and revert back to how it was when I received it? This is the step I'm willing try before rooting or modifying it in some other potentially warranty-voiding way... I may be needing to return this if I can't get wifi working.
There is a 'Factory reset' in the settings
After trying everything I can think of aside from warranty-breaking things, I called the HTC support and we went through very basic things together then he agreed that they will need to take a look at the phone. They will ship me a packing slip and I'll return it in the same box it came in. The repair station is an hour's flight away (in Houston) so I hope to have my phone back very soon, but I wasn't given an estimate so I can't be when that will happen.

The above link is to a thread on the Google Help forums where I've been keeping track of this issue. Basically the wifi issue is a know issue according to an HTC representative I just talked with, and they will be sending a OTA firmware update out to all NexusOne phones within the next several days that should resolve any issues we are having with this functionality. This saves me from needing to send in my phone for repairs, and if it comes to that they said they will just swap the phones without me being out of a phone at all.

Question about USB Tethering

Yea I just got the Tmo Vibrant the other day and I can't get the usb tethering to work. I tried with the pda.net app that came with the phone and had no luck at all. This is a stock phone, it hasn't been rooted or anything. Can someone please tell me what I have to do to get this to work, or point me in the right direction. I been searching for the past 2 days and came up with nothing. I know about wifi hotspot but that looses connection on me after 5min. Im looking for straight usb tethering. Appreciate it.

you're in the USA on T-mobile, when you say wi fi tethering but you aren't rooted, what program are you using? Rooting should solve this problem, it is very quick and the instructions are in the sticky thread in this forum.
then install Rom Manager (in same thread as rooting)
then follow instructions here for the Mobile AP software that samsung wrote for the galaxy S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760243
as far as I know, this is the most versatile wi-fi tethering program since it doesn't create an ad-hoc network, it is true access point. be sure to use clockwork recovery (available in the rom manager app from the market) to install it since it is a .zip not .apk
I was using the wifi hotsoot on my hd2. That phone is gone now though. It would only hold a connection for a couple of secs though. Im not too sure I want to root my phone though. What I really want to know is, does your phone have to be rooted to be able to access usb tethering.
PDA.net does work fine on your non-rooted phone. Allow the computer side of the installation install the drivers and it will install the phone side too. I used it on my Samsung Moment before I got my Vibrant also. But the rooted path is a much better solution if you want to give it a try. Always plenty of people willing to help here if you have any questions.
Thank you guys for your suggestions. I appreciate it
Do you guys use pda.net or another program. Because correct me if I'm wrong don't you have to pay for pda.net?
I use PDAnet and it is free, but for it to work, you have to install the software on the computer as well and the drivers for the phone. I love PDAnet because when you are browsing the internet on the computer and you get a text, the message will pop up on the screen of the PC and you can reply from there, no need to pick up the phone...
I use easytether. It does the job but I'm not sure if you have to be rooted. I don't think you do.

A friend uses PDANET on his MyTouch Slide since he doesn't want to root.
I do recommend the rooted method though.
I wirelessly tethered today (home internet went down) for ~1 hour on 3G and it was almost as fast as our internet normally is. Nothing special to install on the computer & it's always ready for you just in case you need it.
You can always unroot later if you don't like it, pretty simple.
All you need is either Behold II USB driver or having Samsung Kies installed and it's 100% free, or just change USB mode to Kies and plug it to Cradlepoint CTR-500 router and you're hooked.
I rooted and used mobile AP (see post 2). This has been, for me, the easiest and most reliable solution.
I'm in the "I've rooted and am using the WiFi mobile Hotspot" application crowd. Honestly, the ability to have the phone become a mobile AP was 80% of the reason I rooted the phone.
My phone seems to continue to receive emails and txts while acting as an AP and while I' haven't tested it I wouldn't be surprised if it still received calls...
worth rooting for imho...

Calls work as well.
I will drop T-Mobile for the first carrier that has a non-locked down Android 2.2 phone with comparable specs to the Vibrant that doesn't remove the tethering app and/or charges an arm and a leg for tethering.
I think I'm going to start looking around.
Also, are these phones starting to sell more than they were before? I'm still waiting for a replacement on backorder and it still hasn't even shipped to me yet. It's been a week. Last one shipped the next day (off backorder).
If I have to use this HD2 for another week, I'm killing 8 kittens.

Did you flash android on the hd2
is there a way to tether without rooting? i read the thread and i am getting mixed responses. everyone says rooting is better but is it possible without a root?
bump, any information i search on google seems outdated
Xda search is like ten times worse.
Kies for usb tether is an easy solution free and doesn't require root access - just look for the various ways to download kies and look for the USB drivers that should be searchable.
I've been using android-wifi-tether (requires root) for wifi tether and it does a good job - might have to check out mobileAP since most seem to have good success with it.
Appreciate it

Tbolt Mobile Hotspot with Nexus 7

Hi folks, complete WiFi newb here. I am trying to use my HTC Tbolt phone with Mobile Hotspot with my new N7. On Verizon with Hotspot feature enabled. From all indications the connection is made between the devices, but can't get past the Google "Sign in" line where it asks for the password for my Gmail account. When I enter my password it says: Signing in "This can take a few mintes". Everything seems to hang at this point and never replies. Anyone have any ideas? Sure would like to see how this new N7 tab looks! Thanks for any info!
Anyone else dealing with this problem?

I have used a N7 extensively using the Verizon mobile hotspot running on my HTC Thunderbolt. However, I activated the N7 on a regular WiFi network and not using the mobile hotspot.
Husker, thanks for the reply. Nice to see something working on Verizon Mobile hotspot/Thunderbolt combo. Since my attempt hangs up on the Sign In screen, I just don't have much to go on diagnostic-wise. Thanks again for the reply.

[Q] wifi connectivity

So here's the scoop, I just got my n10 and I can't connect it to the home WiFi. My s3 and my wife's s3 all connect as do the other tabs. I can connect the n10 to the hotspot from my phone but still not to the home unit.
So my question, my router is.......let's say from a friend that can make things happen. In the past I had to change the DNS settings which was OK because the my s3 was rooted, but not my wife's. After some reconfiguration from my friend I no longer needed to change the DNS settings and her non rooted phone picked up the WiFi.
Dumb question, does the n10 have new WiFi technology that would impair it from getting the WiFi signal from this......"type" of setup?
Thanks y'all.

I'm not sure what your "type" of setup is or exactly all that stuff about DNS and why a rooted phone wouldn't work with a regular setup (I've never had issues with rooted phones connecting to wifi). Anyway, I had this problem yesterday. Long story short, I had to exchange the Nexus 10.
I did a complete factory reset on the modem/router (in one device. Not unplug and reset, but a complete factory reset), factory reset the tablet, and even reflashed the stock image. Absolutely nothing got it to work. I could connect to a wifi hotspot on my phone, I even hooked up an old router I had to my modem and that worked as well(but the separate router drops signal, so I didn't want to use it.)
Maybe it's something to do with the DNS thing you mentioned that's way above me, but as soon as I got the new Nexus it worked with no issues. But then again, the first Nexus worked for a week before it stopped connecting.
Hope that helps somewhat.
Well I guess I'll just come out with it...my Internet setup is not precisely legit, but I don't have any issues connecting any other wifi devices. Why would I have issues with this one. Is it intuitive enough - more than my s3 - to know and not process the signal? I have replaced it today and still no luck. I have tried the replacement on another actual legit home wifi and it works great. Other than getting myself legit........any suggestions?
Users on other foruma said the upgrade to 4.2.2 helped. I assume its not completely updated out of the box. Maybe find a network that works and give that a try. otherwise, I'm all out of ideas.
Im waiting for my new one to start doing the same thing. Im nervous it will happen after my return period this time.
Just got one recently, and it was not updated. After the update, it's now on JDQ39.
Yea, I updated to 4.2.2 on the first one and no luck. I haven't yet on this one but I guess I will give it a try.
I really wanna keep it because it's a frigging nexus and the screen is AWESOME. I'm even thinking of going legit for it. SMH I feel dirty just typing it.

WOW!!! as stubborn as I am I went to try for a third tablet before being defeated......the third tablet accepted the WiFi in an instant. So the outcome: two tablets had WiFi issues right out if the box. They would not connect at all... Persistence is key.
Glad to hear. Keep us updated if it starts to have issues again.

I'm having same problem.
Question, did yours connect to your network and showed CONNECTED but didn't have any actual internet connection?
I'm having same issues here.
Curious if your router is an ARRIS one.

Sorry for the late response....all correct.
It would read connected but no data, and it's an arris router unit.
I had to go through three units (nexus 10's) before getting one that worked. Might just want to try and exchange it.

ahhh ok
yea i wanted to try and return it but i dont wanna go thru 3 of them :/
it would be so much easier to swap out my router for like a motorola one or something \
right now im using connectify me off my computer and my nexus connects fine.
so your 4th nexus connected to it just fine ?
see, i bought mine at walmart i dont wanna try and return 3 of them thru there saying, oh the wifi works everywhere but my house, i just dont want them to be like we cant return it or something after the 3rd time LOL
i called google and they had no idea what i was talking about -_-
and samsung takes FOREVER to get a representative i havent got to talk to them first, im just curious if theres somehting i could do before i try taking it back to get it to work.
Actually the third one is the one working so I guess I only returned it twice...sorry.
But I also purchased mine at Walmart. Not sure if your in a big city, but I just went to different walmarts for returns. I got lucky on the first return .....they were being lazy and just gave me cash instead of returning it to the card. So that made it a lot easier to repurchase.
Mine worked on another router so maybe changing yours out will work, but I don't have that option. I will say the first one worked on my brother in laws router.....so maybe. Let me know how it goes.

I myself bought mine at Walmart.
And I know returning it saying it works in all networks except mine is going to sound super sketch so I contacted Google first and they had no record of it.
I posted a user bug on code.Google.com
Then called Samsung and explained the issue (if I set a static IP on the nexus itself to 192.168.0.7, then switch back to dhcp trying to connect to MY network it still shows the nexus' IP as 192.168.0.7, but I was to so that then switch back to dhcp and connect to a McDonalds hotspot my IP changes instantly)
Along with many other things I've tried, went all the way up to tech support level 3 and they've never heard of it either so he wrote down EVERYTHING and asked me to email there president with my ticket number and everything to see if they can look more into
It.
I called time Warner as well and explained my problem there willing to swap out my router for a different one. So I don't think I'll be returning it.
Thanks for your replies though.

Good for you getting a new router....I will say the walmarts I went to didn't even ask what was wrong. They took it and didn't even blink.
From what I learned in doing this and my rudimentary knowledge of networking, the IP will default to the networks line of succession IP addresses. I tried changing my IP at home too, but still no luck. I even got into the routers "database " I guess you would call it. In internet explorer or chrome, type in your gateway address (for instance mine was 10.0.0."'' It should be on the bottom of the router or in your tab.....not sure where I found it. Username is probably admin and the password is probably password - these are standard defaults from the mfg. You can see all connected devices, but in my case 3 hours of jacking with it didn't make a difference, I had to change it out to get it working.
Don't get me wrong, if you get a new router and it works.....AWESOME.
was it the first router you set it to? mine was and maybe because of that it will never talk to it again but will work with others going forward.
I did call Google too and they weren't thrilled about helping since I bought from Wally world.
Have you master reset it? I had a number of times but still to no result. maybe you can try that.

Wifi won't connect to open network. Connecting, then saved.

I tried searching this fourm, online, and no results after countless hours.
This is my problem. At work there is one big open network with a lot of extenders everywhere. When I got my new phone phone from BB when I broke my screen I tried to connect to it and it says " Connecting...." for a few seconds then automatically goes to "Saved".
I tried the obvious, forgetting network, rebooting phone, restoring to factory, updating firmware, nothing has worked so far. It always goes from connecting to saved. Every other device has worked flawlessly besides this phone
My last few phones have had no problem connecting. I do not have the authority to reboot the whole system, change frequently, add a pw, basically I'm only allowed to connect.
Wondering if anyone has experienced this problem, and might have any ideas or solutions. This is the only network that has ever gave me a problem.
Thanks for taking your time to read and help!
