Hi folks, complete WiFi newb here. I am trying to use my HTC Tbolt phone with Mobile Hotspot with my new N7. On Verizon with Hotspot feature enabled. From all indications the connection is made between the devices, but can't get past the Google "Sign in" line where it asks for the password for my Gmail account. When I enter my password it says: Signing in "This can take a few mintes". Everything seems to hang at this point and never replies. Anyone have any ideas? Sure would like to see how this new N7 tab looks! Thanks for any info!
Anyone else dealing with this problem?

I have used a N7 extensively using the Verizon mobile hotspot running on my HTC Thunderbolt. However, I activated the N7 on a regular WiFi network and not using the mobile hotspot.
Husker, thanks for the reply. Nice to see something working on Verizon Mobile hotspot/Thunderbolt combo. Since my attempt hangs up on the Sign In screen, I just don't have much to go on diagnostic-wise. Thanks again for the reply.

I received my Nexus S today, popped in the new SIM but can't activate the phone. After I sign in with my goggle account, I get the message "can't establish a reliable data connection to the server. I swapped the sim from my G1 that I have been using so far - same problem. Any ideas?
Thanks

Use the g1 simcard

I did and still nothing.
Didn't know these phones needed to be activated.
I think Im going through something similar....
Everytime I turn off the phone (twice)... I lose 3G connection to T-Mobile. It says I need web service, but I had it for another phone. Ive called tmobile about this and all they said to do was a battery pull. And it worked the first time, but no luck second time around. Just wanted to know before calling them if anyone had this issue?
I remember going through something similar from a blackberry phone to a nexus one (same thing happen but I guess it something to do with the plans)
Skip the welcom wizard, turn on wifi, login to your wifi, then go to menu/settings/accounts and add your google accounts.

I had to call them to get the 4G web provisioned on my account. Even though this phone isn't HSPA+ capable, this provisioning lets it work with HSDPA

I got a letter from at&t saying they have detected me tethering my focus to a laptop, and if I don't stop they will upgrade my account and charge me for tethering, anyone else get a similar letter?
Also, if I use internet sharing on the focus s, will they charge?
Thanks for your help.
Yikes, I have not gotten this letter but I only occasionally tether on my tilt 2. I just got my focus s - and i can't turn on 'internet sharing' unless I have the right plan from AT&T - does anyone have a way around this (yet)?
thx

You can turn on wifi tethering with the info HERE but I think at&t might send you a letter if you use it too much...
Has anyone tried the above 'wifi tethering' fix to the new " Focus S " ?
thx

I did it more foir the interop unlock but the tethering was an extra bonus. I dont tether much at all but I did test it out and it worked fine.
@rcf686 - did you have to do anything other then set your HOST file to not-readonly (for the unlocking step I mean)? I"m having a problem with the ChevronWP7 UNLOCK program saying it can not connect? I've even installed the WPConnect.exe and, although that runs ok, still ChevronWP7 says: "Sorry, having problems communicating with phone...."
Since you have the same phone i'm wondering what you did different? thx!
Greg
I didn't do anything different. My laptop and iPad just connected like any other WiFi hot spot. I have seemed to notice the last day or so some strangeness in my WiFi. I find I have to turn off my WiFi or data to get to the marketplace. I never had to do that before I ran the interop unlock file.
Been using my Google provided wifi hotspot feature since the n1 including up until about an hour ago when I got the pleasant message on my laptop screen that in order to use my phone as a hotspots I need to pay T-Mobile $15 per month. Anyone else have this happen and are there any known workarounds? Running bugless beast pixel edition.

How long were you using your hot spot? I quickly browsed a bit on my tablet to see if I'd get a message but didn't. I'm running CM9 on my phone.

From reading the article, I wasn't sure if it would affect all users or just HTC Amaze 4G owners.

There is a similar post in the HTC One S forum with a fix. Just added a new APN with nothing but epc.tmobile.com in the config and it seems to have fixed the problem......for now anyway.
Just got throttled again with the new apn settings. Looks like it may be time for a clear card.

Change the name of your wifi hotspot and it should fix it. Worked for me when I got that message.

damn a day late. Called Tmobile and after talking with customer loyalty just ended up paying for it. They did however give it to me for $10 instead of $15 and didn't make me extend my contract. I will probably end up getting a clear card for internet now and calling them back to cancel the hotspot feature. Good to know about your fix though.
happened to me too, running stock rom, i'll try the name change method later

I did this:
1) settings
2) Wireless & Networks
3)Portable Wi-fi hotspot settings
4) Where is says Router name (SSID): I change the original name.
I did not work.
Is that what you meant when you say Change the name of your wifi h.s.? If not I could use a little help. Thanks
Well its now happened to me.
I'm running Mark V ICS ROM with CM9 and used Barnacle... was tethering my laptop then all the sudden I got the txt from T-Mo about adding or be blocked... so I scrambled and try to find device manager to freeze it...buy can't find it anywhere. Now I got a message saying my tethering is blocked.
Does anyone know what system app or process is reporting? Like I said...I froze device manager in other phones and it worked...just can't find it on this one

changing your settings won't help to work around throttling.
apparently you need to stop using chrome as your browser.
I read somewhere also, that tmobile can't tell you are tethering if you are on a mac.
EDIT
{Seems that it is false that tmobile can tell if you are on a mac, but it does appear to be true that tmobile can tell when you tether if you use the wrong browser in the device you are tethering to. So it doesn't matter if you change your settings or you get a different tethering app - just use a safe browser}

Still no work around? Its not about the throttling... its about using the hotspots feature and the data we already pay for and something built in ad a feature of the phone.

it seems that T-Mobile has blocked the use of wifi hotspot
try another app here (via USB)

I just got the tethering block after I installed Google Chrome on my laptop which was weird so I went back to using internet explorer and I'm not blocked. I gave the Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.0.4.
I'm using AOKP ROM Build 37. I just tethered Wifi Hotspot to my A100 tablet, it's accessing the internet just fine using Boat Browser. Other apps connecting to the internet just fine too. Wonder if only the stock "T-Mobile" ROMs that have the tethering blocked.
I personally think it's unethical for carriers/providers to charge extra for mobile hotspot. After all I'm paying the 2GB or 3GB or 5GB so I should be able to use it.. Hope for a class action suit against the carriers for such unethical practice to gouch more money from the consumers..
Edited: I use ROM Toolbox and change the DNS on the tablet to Google DNS for it to work. The default DNS did not work.
Use Safari in Mac
I am using Nexis One for more than two years and yesterday I go the t-mobile hotspot message. I initially thought maybe I am over 1GB and they are doing this. After reading this thread, I changed the SSID and tried with Chrome on MAC and I still had the error. I tried with Safari on MAC and I can use the hotspot. I am writing this using Nexus one hotspot with Safari on Mac.
I was pretty pissed when I noticed that they did this yesterday with my G2. C'mon T-Mobile, this is an old phone that isn't going to get the bells and whistles of ICS. At least you can let us have this! I'm running stock but am now considering moving to CM7. Does anyone know if WiFi hotspot works, with chrome, using CM7 on t-mobile?
I'm also wondering if it has anything to do with the browser agent. In remember being able to change a browser agent with desktop chrome and Firefox through an addon. Does anyone know how to do that with tablet chrome? I only know how to switch between mobile and desktop but that doesn't appear to make a difference
Well..I got hit about a week ago and was blocked..funny thing...I flashed a new ROM and when I tried it again..I used internet explorer...was blocked....then I tried FireFox and boom. I'm back on
Running a week now on new ROM and using hotspots tethering for my laptop and my wife's iphone. Kids iPod and daughters iphone and still running strong
Odd isn't it?

Every browser except chrome are working for me on stock. Have you been able to run ICS on something connected to your t-mobile phone, via WiFi hotspot, and use chrome to browse the web? I'm trying to see if a custom ROM restores this capability
I run ICS..but I don't use Chrome
On a side note..I was also running another ICS custom ROM with different kernel when I initially got blocked.

So I bought my nexus last Thursday at my local Office Depot. Since then I've had the worst time trying to connect it to my college's wifi. They have an instructions wifi where you download your personal certificate to connect. It worked with my old Xoom but wouldn't connect for the life of me..
So today I decided to visit the infamous tech department where they struggled to find a solution. The leader came over and noticed it was a nexus. He said I wouldn't be able to connect because there is a bug in the software and I won't be able to connect until Google updates the software.
Can anyone else confirm this?
I'm tempted to leave stock and install a custom rom to see if it makes a difference.
So if anybody knows anything about this it would help me greatly and save my phones data connection from tethering.
Thanks in advance

On Oreo beta2 I can no longer connect to the SIP server when the phone is on any WiFi connection. App works fine on mobile data but not on WiFi, no matter where the WiFi originates. This happens on Zoiper, CSipSimple or any Voip App. Was working on 7.1. Seems there is something blocking the connection to the server. Any thoughts?

Ditch the apps. SIP functionality is built into the standard phone app. I am using it with VoIP.ms.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that was available but the same problems exists with the native dialer. Account will register on mobile data but not WiFi. Something is blocking it. Very frustrating and i don't know what else to do to troubleshoot this.

Just tested this myself with Oreo beta 2 using the internal dialer and it worked fine.

Perhaps your router (or service provider) is blocking a necessary port. I would start with researching which ports need to be open for SIP/ your VoIP service functionality. Then checking your network and router, with some app or other, if it is open or closed. Then creating a port forwarding rule to your device if necessary. Note this advice is just theoretical as I have not had to do this. Perhaps someone with some similar experience could further advise...

I have thought about this as well but that would not explain as why it happens on my home wifi, my work wifi, my friends wifi... All with different routers and service providers. It must be the phone or rom issue or possibly some app doing this. Googling this brings me to others mainly with a Pixel phone with the same problem.

Sprint OMA-DM cause?
OK so i was digging into the phone to try to solve this problem and found something interesting. There was a n APP called "Spring OMA-DM" that i found was using data on my phone. I use T-Mobile so i didn't think i needed anything Sprint on my phone. Since i am rooted i decided to remove any APP on the device that had a Sprint name. There were three i removed. Once i deleted these APPs my WiFi connection for my SIP starting working. I wonder what Sprint is trying to do. I bought this phone on Amazon but it was from a private seller and he obviously got it from Sprint but it was unlocked and i never had any problems. I think everyone might want to beware of this.
