I bought a Nexus 7 a couple of weeks ago and decided to root it a week later. I used the Nexus Root Kit to unlock and root. The rom is stock though. Now I notice that sometimes if I turn it off, it won't turn back on with just pressing the power button and it won't charge either. I manage to get it on again by pressing the power button along with the up/down volume buttons. Has my rooting screwed it up?
I have the same problem, but never know what is exactly happening to my nexus 7.
U need to wipe it and flash cm or something ...it needs a nice wiping in any case

Hi, i dont think that the root is something to do with the turn on issue because i have mine rooted and i dont have Any problem.
Enviado desde mi Nexus 7 usando XDA Premium HD app
Mine is not rooted and it just did this today, shut all the way down and was it would not even show the charge symbol, I plugged it into the wall charger and it had a "fuzzy TV" look to it, which worried me, so I unplugged it and plugged it back in a few times until that 'fuzzy TV' look went away and it was all dark. Then I held the power button along with pushing the up and down arrows, and finally one of the combinations worked and it turned on to the power charge screen.
Im thinking it went so far completely dead that it just needed to be plugged in for a little while but I see that others are having the same issue. I wish we could know more as to why this has happened.

I'll power off my N7 and if I plug in the charger nothing will happen, no indication that it is charging.
If I press the power button to turn it on nothing will happen. I have to hold down the power button like a forced restart and it will power on after 10 seconds. It seems to me my N7 isn't powering off all the way and I have to force a restart to restart it.
What the heck is wrong with my N7? and yes I searched!
I would power it up and run a few extensive programs and watch a movie until the battery dies and powers off. After its completely dead see if it charges.

That seems odd.. Are you running stock?
100% stock
Hmm I would say try these
1. Wipe all data
If it doesn't fix, well you got to unlock bootloader, flash Stock rom (or a custom if you want) then relock bootloader to get back warranty and it should fix the issue.

Found the problem... it was the latest update from Dropbox. Removed it and now my Nexus shuts down like it should.
If you use Dropbox you might want to check to see if your Nexus shuts down right.
Found another app that causes this... Wifi Analyzer.
Ironically both apps recently released an update to make it compatible with 4.1.1
- Steps to reproduce the problem.
I have seen a couple of other freeze ups from time to time, rather randomly, in various apps, not just Chrome.
In this case, I clicked the "All Apps" button in the lower right corner, and it froze.
- What happened.
The system froze, and then the screen went black. Now I am completely unable to restart the tablet. I does not matter how long I hold down the power button, either alone or combined with the volume up/down, it remains bricked. While connected to USB, it will show the battery charging icon in the middle of screen every 10 seconds (stays on for ~3 seconds) while I'm holding down the power button.
As of now the tablet is basically dead.
The tablet was running Android 4.2.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Power with volume up and down at the same time til you hit fast boot?

I know this will sound stupid, but are you sure you have battery?
Or try to hold the power button for about 20 seconds until N10 vibrates. That's it.

Keep it plugged in to the wall for a few hours and try again

it may be worth reading this and possibly popping out the battery just to see if that helps.

Thanks for replying but after me thinking it was broken for 2 months it suddenly turned on on its own last night!
Not really sure what was wrong to begin with but when it turned on I had 0% charge for a few hours, really strange.
Same issue for me on 32Gb model.
I had a flicker screen once last week and today it doesn't boot up. I connected it for an hour but all I get is the fully charged battery icon when I press the power button, sometimes with a flicker screen or red/blue/green dots all over the place. It doesn't vibrate, it's not recognized by my Windows 8 computer.
I bought it through the eBay US deals and it sucks cause I'm in Europe...:crying:
Call +18553926398 from Skype. It is a Samsung Nexus Repair Center. From Skype it's free of charge line. I had problem with battery in my nexus 10 32gb. I had to send it to US on my cost. I spend on it (from Poland to the US) about 70euro(by UPS), from the US to Poland about $50 (by DHL). But Nexus came back repaired on warranty and it took about 1 week only. It easy and It worth to try. Important: Samsung Repair Center can send your fixed Nexus only to the US (to the US it's for free), so I used MyUS.com for 'a proxy' to send it to Poland (and this part cost about $50).
Recently updated my n7 to 4.2, haven't done anything beyond rooting. I woke up this morning, watched an episode of Prison Break via Netflix and went to work. I always plug it in before I leave, and it was saying it was charging before I left.
I get home from work today, and upon trying to unlock the device, it doesn't turn on. I unplugged it, checked the plug in it was using, even tried multiple different electrical sockets. Plugging it in usually brings up the off charging animation, but nothing. Anyone know what might be going on?
My sincerest apologies if this has been asked/questioned before; I did a little searching before I posted this and couldn't find anything about it. Thanks in advance.

Try holding down the power button for 10-20 seconds.
If that doesn't work, try leaving it plugged in for a couple hours and check back on it.
Also try plugging it into the computer and seeing if your screen has gone bad, the Nexus 7 should still come up if it's on.
...I really can't believe I made a post for this..rofl. Thanks a lot, I guess I'm just a little too impatient to hold the power down longer than five seconds.
If mods wanna delete, feel free.

Try holding down vol up & down buttons and then the power button. Then you should be in the reboot/recovery menu. It should say start. Push power button to power up.

Had the same issue today...thanks to all for the quick and easy fix...feel like such a dork!
I'm having the same problem, last night I tried to turn on my Nexus7 and had issues.
My device is locked and upgraded to 4.2
While booting, the device would get to the lock screen then immediately power down. While it was powering down the screen would fuzz over and glitch a few times. As soon as it turned off it would repeat the process. I eventually got it into the boot loader and I noticed "based version: N/A" I'm not sure what that means but I hit start and now all it does is get stuck at the multi-colored X logo.
Getting back into boot loader I tried recovery mode, the response is "No command". Tried plugging it into my PC and I get the little (ba dum) sound but no device or folders to be scene.
I think i'm in trouble. I wanted to see if I could root it just so the device works again but I can't access it on my PC.
Can anyone think of a step or process I forgot to try?
My Nexus 7, wont turn on anymore either i charged it , it was very low went down to 11% battery so i turned it off and charged it, saw the battery on the screen and now.. It will not turn on, unit feels very warm when charging. It started to lag a bit , before i turned it off.. its normal software as supplied by nexus. so..> no matter how long i hold the buttons.. its off and screen stays black..
doh....asked for RMA number..only used it for a month
My Nexus 7 32Gb won't turn on either. I've been having since I got it the battery has been showing 0% since I turned it on. Regardless of how much charging I did it never changed. It ran fine and was told it might be to do with calibrating the battery but it then started to have problems turning on. It's gone off and I've tried the various power on options mentioned in this thread and nothing is working.
I guess it means a return to Carphone Warehouse. I had just got it all set-up as well.
I had rooted it and manually upgraded it to 4.2.1. It was running fine bar the 0% battery issue. I did the same thing to my Mum's 16Gb Nexus 7 and no problems at all with that one.

Hold the power button for 10 seconds or more.Happened to me just yesterday.
Plugin Nexus 7 does not bring up the charging animation. But after holding the power button for about 10 seconds, the boot animation finally appeared
New Nexus 7 Died after 2 Hrs Use
Nexus 7 shut off after only 2 Hrs of use and placed on USB charge. Tried holding button down for 30 Seconds and up/down combination with Power and nothing worked. Opened back cover carefully and patiently with Plastic Opening Tool I already had. Disconnected battery for thirty seconds then replaced connector without removing battery. Snapped cover back on. Hit power and it turned on. Do not use metal on case to open. Hope this helps. I got the idea from Youtube Video. I'm a new user and Not allowed to post links yet. Nexus 7 Teardown Review.

Thanks a lot I holded power button for more than 15 sec it got powered on thanks for your information.I am Happy now.
Man, I was just freaking out. Just got the wifi 16 on Monday. Rommed it as soon as I got home. Was using it at my local watering hole, and it suddenly just would not respond. Black screen, yadda yadda.
15 seconds of holding the power button and boom. Google logo, and then SmoothROM's boot ani. *wipes forehead* Never been so happy to see Jessica Nigri's face! lol
Thank You
I had been turning the Nexus on and off for the last couple of days, No "problems".
I tried to turn it on a couple of minutes ago and NOTHING. I even pluged it in and the battery charging icon did not turn on.
I also tried holding the button for 5 seconds but still nothing.
Fix:
I had to held the button for over 15 seconds to get it to turn on.
Thanks!
Similar problem with my nexus 7. Battery charge shows up when i plug it in. If I try to turn it on while its plugged in, i get what looks like static and lines on the screen. When I unplug it, it dies. If I hold the power button down, and plug it in, it will boot normally, and everything seems to work fine, but the battery shows as dead, and as soon as I unplug it, it dies.Just got it, it came with 4.2.1 running on it, it was an open box from Best Buy, and developer options were already enabled on it. Looks like someone tried to root it, f'd it up, and returned it. Guess I'm taking it back and returning it as well. Just a major pain as it's 1.5 hours each way from where I live to the closest best buy and back.
My problem is an easy fix, return it. However, I'd like to know if anyone figures out a fix for this incase it happens in the future.
Thanks.
hey guys out there i really need your help,
my nexus 10 doesn't boot anymore, and i dont mean something like getting stuck at the bootscreen, in doesnt respond in any way, no matter how long i'm pressing the power button.
display still works because when its plugged in and i press the power button it shows me the battery which is completely white, that does mean that it is fully charged, or? unfortunately that is the only vital sign i can get...
im running cm 0301 nightly with stock kernel, just turned it off this morning and now this
did anyone experiece the same and could help me?
thanks in advance

2 possible solutions, first is the easiest.
1. While it's plugged in to charger and the battery is showing hold in power and up/down volume buttons together for about 5 seconds after battery disappears and release power while continuing to hold up/down volume until recovery comes up.
If your warranty has expired then try second option
2. Open it up and disconnect battery, hold power for 10 second then reconnect and power up.
AW: [Q] Nexus 10 doesn't boot anymore
Hmm, first solution doesn't work, but it once vibrated and the screen blinked for a short moment when I plugged it in after some time, unfortunately I can't reproduce it :/
I already rooted so I might have no warranty at all anymore but if it is a hardware bug they have to repair, or?
I bought it last December.
At least my friend got his rooted i9300 replaced without any cost when it got sudden death.
Actually don't know what to do now :/

OMG, I knew that charging does take long, but it needed 3 hours to get enough juice just to boot up
It did boot, but shows 0 percent battery ^^
I'm gonna charge it the whole night without shutting it down, let's wait until for tomorrow
Nevertheless thank you for your advices

Just send over if all solution not working, don't talk anything on root.
Sometimes they don't care, or don't know.
At least I had send for repair for Nexus One & S III before, and both was root.

Well, it does work now again but only shows 5% battery after 6 hours charging with wall.
Gonna send it in nevertheless, if they ask for root I'll just flash stock and send it

Hey all,
My N4 seems to have bricked itself, or had some hardware component malfunction suddenly. I flashed the latest PA build on Tuesday and have been running that happily since. This morning, I took a screenshot of something, and the system locked up. I figured no big deal, that stuff happens. Held the power button to reboot, and it hung on the google logo. That's never happened to me before, and thought that was strange. So, I held the power button again and it rebooted afterwards without issue. Thought nothing of it.
Later, I was taking a photo, and the autofocus motor freaked out and the system locked up. Held the power button to reboot, it shut down, and that was it. Now it is completely unresponsive. Have had it plugged to the wall charger in for 2 hours, tried plugging it into the computer and pressing/holding the power button (windows doesn't recognize anything being plugged in). Can't get any response out of it at all.
Basically, I'm at a loss of what to do.
Funny thing is, I was considering ordering a N5 yesterday/today. This has pretty much confirmed my intention to go ahead and order one, but I would like to get my N4 back up and running if possible.
Thanks!
Well false alarm. Left it plugged into the wall charger for about 4 hours then held the power button for what seemed like 30 seconds. Booted right up, but charge was less than 10%... Oh well, everything is fine now.
