Installed CM7 on the EVO 4G three days ago and everything has been working fine. Until today when I went to turn my phone on, nothing happened. It vibrated like normal when its booting up, but nothing came up on the screen. Since then, nothing is happening at all. No charging light when plugged in, no sounds, no vibrations, nothing on the screen, not showing up on computer.
What do I try to get this thing to respond?
Did I cause this or is this a hardware problem that just happened to be about the same time I rooted this thing?

What method of rooting did you do? You try a battery pull and hold the power button down for 15 secs with the battery out and try to boot it.

A bricked phone will have a red triangle looking thing that won't go away lol. One that doesn't respond is usally spanked silly lol. Tho there may still be hope your's isn't try the pull method on batt.
I pulled the battery, held power button and volume down while plugged into wall, no response. Should I leave it unplugged and not try the volume button with it?

Try it without being plugged in and with battery out just hold power button down. Usally clears some big issues. If it doesn't work then it could be spanked. Bad unit.

Do you have an extra battery to try out, or temporarily borrow from a friend? Are you sure your battery was charged up, and it didn't die? It sounds odd that it just did that out of the blue. I'd be suspicious of.a dead battery. They can die to the point that they will not take a charge, and they're totally dead.

That's true lol SBC kernels can spank battery quicker. Id try new battery if it's not it then Id swap it out at sprint.
I do not have another battery to test with, I will have to go to a sprint store to do that. I dont have the unit with me to test tonight, but I will take these suggestions home with me. Thanks guys. Lets hope I didn't brick my girlfriends two week old EVO. She loved the Cyanogenmod that I put on there.

I thought I'd clean up the OP for folks who got here with similar issues as me since it seems more common than we'd like.
Scenario:
Phone does not turn on without the charger or USB plugged in.
When plugged in, it boot loops at the Google logo (i.e. turns off at the logo, and reboots) and gives what is beginning to be referred to as the the 'red LED of death'--where the LED just blinks read.
The bootloader is accessible when plugged in. But trying to boot into recovery causes a loop. If you try to enter recovery, the phone has to turn off then boot back into recovery. But turning off means that when it turns on it will loop at the Google logo. So, booting into recovery is NOT an option.
Download mode is also accessible when plugged in.
Since the bootloader is accessible, it is possible to flash the factory image to the phone, however, doing so does not resolve the boot loop, nor does it allow the phone to turn on without being plugged in.
Fixes which have worked for some people
Instructions in this post worked for a couple people. NOTE: you have to be able to get into the bootloader for this to work.
One person who left it in download mode plugged into the PC (which was off) overnight, and somehow the problem was resolved. Thread here.
Here's a post in this thread from a user who was able to get it booting up again by leaving it on the charger for a bit.

Tape the power button down so it goes into a power cycle. Leave it until the battery is totally dead. Then plug it into the wall outlet, let it fully charge. Then try turning it on.

Your computer only detects it briefly? perhaps it'll detect it if you boot into Bootloader mode (not sure if you were able to from reading the OP)
Press and hold volume down, volume up, and power until the device boots. If you successfully enter Bootloader mode you can find steps on how to return to stock here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312

i am on the same boat. i already contacted CSR anh they will send me a new one. after flash new kernel and start antutu, the n4 crashed and completely dead.
I'm pretty sure the battery with the lightning bolt means its charging.

Yeah, but it's already full charged. Even if I leave it on the charger for a while, it still doesn't start up

I would say try this to drain the battery. Then charge it and see what happens.
So how exactly did the phone brick? Just so everyone here knows what not to do. Is it the kernel that caused it since its still in experimental stages?

Have you tried reflashibg or using your nan droid back up from the recovery console?
Just because our won't not does not mean it is bricked.
It is really ticking me of that many people do not even have our phones and you are exchanging because of ignorance. Surely all these exchanges must impact stock. I know they keep extras but how many?
Stop messing with things you know nothing about until you at least learn..

That's the point. It'll turn on and off until the battery is ACTUALLY dead. Then, charge it fully, and try to start it.
Dude this happened to me last night! Same ROM kernel combo! And fired up an tutu after ocing point is this should not be happening just made a thread and seen this here! Freaky! I'm telling u people beware something is up for sure been doing this a long time never seen this before
First if you have an unlocked bootloader, your replacement won't be free. As soon as Google gets it and realizes it's unlocked they will charge you full price for your replacement.
Second, Nexus devices are next to impossible to brick. There is probably a way to reset the device. I would try first unplug the device from your computer or charger and try holding the power button for a full 15-20 seconds. Then try booting into bootloader or recovery. If that doesn't work, try holding volume up and power for 15-20 seconds. If that doesn't work, try volume down and power for 15-20 seconds. And if that one doesn't work try holding all 3 down for 15-20 seconds. This sounds like a problem that would more than likely be fixed by removing the battery and rebooting. Since this doesn't have a removable battery there has to be a built in 'hard reset' that will power cycle the phone.
I am willing to bet there is a way to get this working. I guarantee if I had it here in front of me I could.
Also, like someone else has said before, if you are a not good at diagnosing problems, troubleshooting problems, fixing this kind of stuff on your own and adb/fastboot, it makes no sense to be using experimental software on your device. Especially if you plan on pushing its boundaries by overclocking and running benchmark software. If I were you, after you get this straightened out, wait a while until stuff is more ppolished and tested better.
So, by sheer luck, I was able to get into the bootloader and have it stay on. I was then able to use the toolkit (option 9) to flash the google factory stock image. This completed successfully, and I was also able to re-lock the bootloader, but I still have the same problem as I did before: battery charging icon and constant reboot. So, it's completely stock now and the issue is still there. Would it be reasonable to assume that the issue isn't software and I somehow got a hardware failure?
Yo hold power down then plug USB in then right after hold all three button .like after u plus in USB while holding power button then at same time hold volume buttons also this is how I got into download mode.....but.....phone was not detected and comp SD there was a driver failure. But yes dude phone was charged. And I had same exact combo as u I mean same exact. This is why it is freaky. Aokp was fine all day then when I flashed faux test kernel and fired up antutu I just had a flash then nothing. Not blaming anyone of course it was me who chose to flash after all this is custom software and I love these guys work just wish I knew what did it ....like what actually did it

I was able to do the same thing but it would vibrate then see Google for a sec then nothing and back to a blinking red light....dude this is crazy I can't. Believe this happened to another person the same exact way
dammit. And I was just going to try this combo. Guess that's gonna be a no go.
Last ditch effort is to unscrew the two t5 screws at the bottom and do a real battery pull. Probably wont work, but what do you have to lose?
Recently updated my n7 to 4.2, haven't done anything beyond rooting. I woke up this morning, watched an episode of Prison Break via Netflix and went to work. I always plug it in before I leave, and it was saying it was charging before I left.
I get home from work today, and upon trying to unlock the device, it doesn't turn on. I unplugged it, checked the plug in it was using, even tried multiple different electrical sockets. Plugging it in usually brings up the off charging animation, but nothing. Anyone know what might be going on?
My sincerest apologies if this has been asked/questioned before; I did a little searching before I posted this and couldn't find anything about it. Thanks in advance.

Try holding down the power button for 10-20 seconds.
If that doesn't work, try leaving it plugged in for a couple hours and check back on it.
Also try plugging it into the computer and seeing if your screen has gone bad, the Nexus 7 should still come up if it's on.
...I really can't believe I made a post for this..rofl. Thanks a lot, I guess I'm just a little too impatient to hold the power down longer than five seconds.

Same thing happened to me ... I turned it off and it was not turning back on .. I came to know from a certain forum that this is a common issue.. Solution was simple but î had to hold the power button for complete 30 seconds

Try holding down vol up & down buttons and then the power button. Then you should be in the reboot/recovery menu. It should say start. Push power button to power up.

Doesn't help mate. Tried everything, will send on RMA tomorrow :-\ ehh. Just before this sudden death my n7 started to lag a lot, I had almost 2 GB free so what is going on?

Had the same issue today...thanks to all for the quick and easy fix...feel like such a dork!
I'm having the same problem, last night I tried to turn on my Nexus7 and had issues.
My device is locked and upgraded to 4.2
While booting, the device would get to the lock screen then immediately power down. While it was powering down the screen would fuzz over and glitch a few times. As soon as it turned off it would repeat the process. I eventually got it into the boot loader and I noticed "based version: N/A" I'm not sure what that means but I hit start and now all it does is get stuck at the multi-colored X logo.
Getting back into boot loader I tried recovery mode, the response is "No command". Tried plugging it into my PC and I get the little (ba dum) sound but no device or folders to be scene.
I think i'm in trouble. I wanted to see if I could root it just so the device works again but I can't access it on my PC.
Can anyone think of a step or process I forgot to try?
My Nexus 7, wont turn on anymore either i charged it , it was very low went down to 11% battery so i turned it off and charged it, saw the battery on the screen and now.. It will not turn on, unit feels very warm when charging. It started to lag a bit , before i turned it off.. its normal software as supplied by nexus. so..> no matter how long i hold the buttons.. its off and screen stays black..

My Nexus 7 32Gb won't turn on either. I've been having since I got it the battery has been showing 0% since I turned it on. Regardless of how much charging I did it never changed. It ran fine and was told it might be to do with calibrating the battery but it then started to have problems turning on. It's gone off and I've tried the various power on options mentioned in this thread and nothing is working.
I guess it means a return to Carphone Warehouse. I had just got it all set-up as well.
I had rooted it and manually upgraded it to 4.2.1. It was running fine bar the 0% battery issue. I did the same thing to my Mum's 16Gb Nexus 7 and no problems at all with that one.

Hold the power button for 10 seconds or more.Happened to me just yesterday.
Plugin Nexus 7 does not bring up the charging animation.But after holding the power button for about 10 seconds,the boot animation finally appeared
New Nexus 7 Died after 2 Hrs Use
Nexus 7 shut off after only 2 Hrs of use and placed on USB charge. Tried holding button down for 30 Seconds and up/down combination with Power and nothing worked. Opened back cover carefully and patiently with Plastic Opening Tool I already had. Disconnected battery for thirty seconds then replaced connector without removing battery. Snapped cover back on. Hit power and it turned on. Do not use metal on case to open. Hope this helps. I got the idea from Youtube Video. I'm a new user and Not allowed to post links yet. Nexus 7 Teardown Review.

Man, I was just freaking out. Just got the wifi 16 on Monday. Rommed it as soon as I got home. Was using it at my local watering hole, and it suddenly just would not respond. Black screen, yadda yadda.
15 seconds of holding the power button and boom. Google logo, and then SmoothROM's boot ani. *wipes forehead* Never been so happy to see Jessica Nigri's face! lol

I had been turning the Nexus on and off for the last couple of days, No "problems".
I tried to turn it on a couple of minutes ago and NOTHING. I even pluged it in and the battery charging icon did not turn on.
I also tried holding the button for 5 seconds but still nothing.
Fix:
I had to held the button for over 15 seconds to get it to turn on.

Similar problem with my nexus 7. Battery charge shows up when i plug it in. If I try to turn it on while its plugged in, i get what looks like static and lines on the screen. When I unplug it, it dies. If I hold the power button down, and plug it in, it will boot normally, and everything seems to work fine, but the battery shows as dead, and as soon as I unplug it, it dies.Just got it, it came with 4.2.1 running on it, it was an open box from Best Buy, and developer options were already enabled on it. Looks like someone tried to root it, f'd it up, and returned it. Guess I'm taking it back and returning it as well. Just a major pain as it's 1.5 hours each way from where I live to the closest best buy and back.
My problem is an easy fix, return it. However, I'd like to know if anyone figures out a fix for this incase it happens in the future.

So I woke up this morning and went to charge my nexus 4, which had around a week of life, only to be greeted with a flashing red light on its LED. It was working perfectly fine up until now, but now it doesn't turn on, it doesn't do anything if I try a hard reset (power + volume down) and charging it with via USB or AC only shows the red flashing LED, with no charging icon at all.
I have absolutely no idea why did it decide to spontaneously die, it didn't even leave the house yet because I was too paranoid I would drop it Is there anything I can do? Any ideas? It looks like getting a replacement is my only option but I wanted to ask you guys if by any chance there's anything else I could try.
have you rooted it or flash anything into it? Overclocking it or something? what have you done to it in the period of a "week"?
Nevermind, I managed to boot into recovery mode after pressing vol.down+power for about 40 secs while plugged to AC. It looks like the battery depleted completely and that was causing the red led — why did the battery go down to 0 while the phone was off is completely beyond me though. (FWIW I did not root the device, didn't flash anything, and didn't overclock it)
I had the same thing happen to be just now. Yesterday my battery died at 2% so I shut it off. I didn't charge it that night. Today I went to plug it in and I got a red flashing led. However after about 3-5 minutes of the charger the regular white charging battery symbol came up on the screen. I think the battery was just really dead.

Nexus 4 DEAD... possibly not charging.
I have this exact same issue... but trying the volume down+power key or trying the power key by itself does not do a thing. The phone will only turn on for a couple of seconds and then die. I have been trying to charge it for a couple of days now with no luch.
I am overseas and just got my phone, which was thoroughly tested by my brother in the US, but it has been off the charger for a couple of weeks until it got to my hands... Is there any reset button or anything else that I can do if I open it???

As long as you are properly charging from a source that can provide at least 1.2A, you should be able to charge the phone back up.
Make sure you're not using an Apple charger, charging from a computer, or charging with a wall adapter that is rated below 1.2A.

Perhaps a kernel related problem? Phone is still very new, devs might have to sort out some shady stuff going on. There will and can always be a certain danger when flashing custom kernels, especially with a device that new.
This just happened to me right when I was demo'ing the 8GB to a buyer since I'm selling it back as I was able to order a 16GB on the last re-offering from Google, (so I don't need two Nexus phones). Hands were sweating when it wouldn't power on, so I grabbed my charger, plugged it in, and then it started flashing a red light. Eventually it turned on after about 5 mins, finally. Battery graph showed 90% charge before it turned off, then 0%, then started back now at 10% charge. This was after powering it off and leaving it in the box since only Tuesday.
Really strange issue... I actually remember something similar happening to my Mom's HP Touchpad a few months back as well. Had to plug it in for about 40 mins after she apparently turned it off and let it sit for a couple weeks during which time it discharged completely. Guess this is the bad part about non-removable batteries lol. Though my iPod touch 2G does sit here with next to no charge and it always powers on without fail.

It's okay but the Christmas holidays are the big problem dammit i must wait

That sucks... Several people have reported that their phones started to work again just by doing nothing. I hope you somehow manage to bring it to life.

Same issue here.
I didn't fina a solution. I've kept the phone connected to the charger for a wole night but it's not booting anymore. I'b only able to enter in fastboot mode pressing vol down + power and connecting it to PC.

This happened to me about 3 days ago while running Antutu with franco kernel r19
My phone completely depleted its battery all the way from 98%. I was able to recover it by connecting my charger for 3 mins and powering on the device with the charger connected. I let it charge for about 10 mins(It refused to charge above 3%).
So i disconnected the charger and restarted the phone. Lo and behold, my battery was back to 98%..
I have been reading lots of threads and i don't seem to be the only one that experienced this issue while running Antutu. Although i have run Antutu multiple times after restart and the problem has not replicated itself..
At first i thought Franco kernel was the culprit but this also happened to people who were completely stock..Leads me to believe that this could be a hardware issue...Lg and Google better figure out what is going on because this could lead to bad publicity and furthermore push people who are currently on the fence regarding a purchase of this device further away.
I have the same issue since this Monday. I still cannot power it on or access fastboot mode.
It happened after I updated to Franco R20 from R19. I still run stock and never OC'ed.
How can I unroot and lock the phone without being able to access fastboot or bootloader?

Hey everyone, Im having a problem thats making me worry. I was using my phone today and for some reason the phone wont turn on after I turned it off. I havent dropped the phone at all and it hasnt been abused in any way. The last thing I was doing before I turned it off was trying to send feedback for the Yahoo Mail app because it wouldnt sync automatically, but even that was unsuccessful because it wouldnt send. So I thought I should just reboot it but afterwards its not turning on at all.
I tried holding the power button for at least 20 seconds and still nothing is happening, and I tried plugging in the power cord to see if that would help but it hasnt. Has anyone gone through a similar issue? Please Help

Try holding volume up + power to see if you can get into recovery then reboot from there.
Also, give some more details about your setup...

Yea I left it alone for a bit and then I held the power button while holding down both volume rockers and somehow it turned on. I dont know why this happened but I'm just glad it turned back on, it gave me a good scare though. I just hope it doesnt happen again
Mine is completely stock, I havent done anything with it yet
And may I ask what was your battery percentage level like after the short charge? Maybe the phone drained it all just being turned off... There were some cases of this here...
i wanted to add that i had a similar problem with my phone not turning back on. However, I managed to fix what was wrong by just plugging in the usb cable. I know you've tried it, but just in case someone else stumbles upon this thread (like me!) and has a problem turning on their nexus, I wanted to share my experience.
I haven't done anything to my phone other than add my old apps to my Nexus since I received it 1.5 weeks ago. It's stock. I've never dropped it or gotten water on it or anything. I charged it overnight last night and stuck it in my purse on the way to work. I think I briefly saw a working screen after I unplugged it this morning. However, the first time I tried to access my phone today was after I got to work. It wouldn't turn on, though that pinkish light at the bottom was still blinking. I tried calling it and the Nexus wouldn't ring even though the call went through a few rings and then onto voicemail. I tried holding down the power button for a while and also holding the power button with the volume keys to see if that would work, and it did not. Finally I borrowed a usb cable to plug it in, hoping the jolt of power would wake it up. That worked. It gave me the charging symbol for a little bit and then gave me the startup/loading screen with the glowing x made of arrows. I checked my battery and it was at full charge. Well, it was at 85%, which is odd since I plugged it in for about 9 hours last night to charge and there has only been 3 hours of non-use since I unplugged it. Also, if it was really turned off during those 3 hours it shouldn't have ate up any battery. Anyway, I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents in case anyone else has this problem. My brother, who gave me the Nexus, told me that he only has 2 weeks to return it if there's something wrong with it or I don't like it. Needless to say this gave me a scare, since the 2 weeks is almost up.

Yes this happened to me the other night. I was making a phone call and accidentally hit the power button. I then tried to turn the screen back on in order to hang up the phone and it would work. I tried holding the button for 15 seconds, tried pressing the volume up/down keys, and still nothing. I then put it back in my pocket for a minute or so and tried again. When I did that the screen came back on and the call was still active. Very strange, and I hope it doesnt happen again....

Same thing is happening to me right now.
Running stock. Not rooted. Phone charge was around 70% and I was on twitter and the app force closed. So I decided to restart my phone then went to turn it back on and it wont respond. Tried holding down the power button for 20 sec. Volume up and power, volume down and all 3 at the same time. Still nothing. Leaving it on the charger for awhile and the screen is blank no battery logo or anything.
Not quite sure what to do now?

Plug it in with the original charger, leave it alone for a couple of hours, try again.

I get the same. I use Dophin Browser . After that i reboot my Nexus 4.
I try to hold Power Button for 1 minutes or more. But nothing change. I
I try hold Power + Volum Down - or Volum + but get same result.
I plug in Adater and wait for it. I will check it 2 hour later.
My Nexus 4 use Stock Rom, Rooted. and this first i get this problem. Please advise me on this case. Thank

I'm having similar problems. Lots of random rebooting and refusals to turn back on sometimes, even though the LED at the bottom is flashing so i know the phone is still powered up. Also, sometimes when i have it plugged into a computer through usb it will get extremely hot and completely shut down, not turning back on for a long time. I called the google play store and someone is going to get back to me. I love my nexus 4 so i hope i can get this fixed or a replacement.

I had this issue too a couple of times playing Pandora through my car's Bluetooth. That was when the Nexus 4 had 4.2.1. I have not had this issue with Pandora since the upgrade to 4.2.2.
However, I just now had this issue with Movie Studio app and exporting a video I edited. It turned off its screen like normal screen timeout but then would not come back on.
I had to Volume Up + Power button for a few seconds and then release to get it to reboot.
This same thing is happening to me. Haven't found a specific cause...

Today got mine not turning on.
Managed to turn it on by holding volume up and power button together for about 30 seconds while phone was on a stock charger. After that I saw blinking orange led. When I resolved buttons there was a battery pictogram. After pressing and holding power button I finally got turning on vibration and Google logo.
The only things a made after the charging were making few photos of my cat (from the lock screen) viewing them in gallery. Then I locked the screen and put the phone on a shelf. In a hour I was not able to turn it on.
My phone has stock rom and only few third party apps installed.
I got muy Nexus 4 on 21-Dec-2012. 4 days ago I flashed to Android 4.2.2 which phone dowloaded itself. After flashing phone was rebooted.
What I noticed is that it shows 70% battery. But It was fully charged few hours ago.
30% in 2 hours! In my opinion some service/app drained these 30% by using 100% of processing power that caused overheating and/or hanging.
I too have just had this problem. And I've had it previously when making calls, the screen simply won't respond at all, its quite annoying.
This morning my alarm went off and the screen wouldn't turn on, it went on for so long I almost threw the phone across the room. I eventually held the power button and volume down/up button and then the led blinked orange a few times and the phone reset, now it seems fine.
Its a very annoying problem, and could be very serious depending on what you are doing, might have to phone the play store and tell them.

This has happened to me twice now. First time was a month ago and the second time was this morning. Phone was at 100% just woke up checked my messages turned off phone 10 min later it will not turn on. Un plugged cord re plugged cord nothing finally pressed up/down vol and power for about a minute (long minute) and the phone rebooted. YIKES!
Every thing seems normal now but I hate that scare and the fact that it has happened to me twice. Full Stock, not rooted.

Happened second time.
I was able to turn it on again by following the same steps. But this time I got some strange issue: after resolving vol+ and power buttons I saw battery pictogram with some frame with a blue background; when phone finally booted up this frame and blue background were visible through the my desktop background an screen itself was much lighter with pure colors. Only after about 5 soft resets screen seems to became nice again. Each reboot caused blue frame to become less visible. I'm confused and worried.
Also during all these reboots this frame with blue background was visible even in behind "Google" and "X" logos during booting up.
Another strange thing is that on screenshots I made this frame is not visible.
That would have to do with LCD or software..
As the battery & Google are just pictures that change. If you understand what in saying lol ?
