How To Get The BEST Out Of Playing HD 1080P Movies Smoothly? - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I've tried many players including DicePlayer, VPlayer Video, RockPlayer, QQPlayer, MX Player, MoboPlayer, etc...
ALL above players lag when playing 1080P MKV files. The only player that JUST about manages to play 1080P MKV files close to smooth is VPlayer, the rest lag and the movie appears to be playing in slo mo...
Other problem is that every couple of seconds the movie buffers which results in a split second pause which is annoying. Audio is slightly out of sync too...
It is not my memory card as I'm using the 32gb Sandisk ultra class 10 micro sd card which is specified to play full HD movies without a problem...
Read/write speeds are 30MB/s so I would of expected it to perform better...
I've read something about increasing memory card speeds in the Tab by using some application which boosts & gives you the absolute maximum read/write times from the memory card.
Could anyone guide me on a good application which gives you the best performance out of your Micro SD card?
Also, what else can I do to make HD 1080P movies play smoothly on the Tab 7.7?
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried mVideoPlayer by Daniel Nilsson?
I play movies with no lag from my 32 gbsd card. This player might help. i could not tell from your post if you had used it already.

I tried the above player and there will still lag. However, I found THREE different versions on the market place. Which of the 3 should I try?
I've tried the mVideoPlayer OId edition - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...6a2wuZGV2ZWxvcG1lbnQubVZpZGVvUGxheWVyLm9sZCJd
Then there is the mVideoPlayer Pro version - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...6a2wuZGV2ZWxvcG1lbnQubVZpZGVvUGxheWVyLnBybyJd
And finally there is mVideoPlayer - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wiYWZ6a2wuZGV2ZWxvcG1lbnQubVZpZGVvUGxheWVyIl0.
I've tried the very first edition (old edition) and the lag is still there.
Which version are you using?
Thanks.

Update - Just tried the latest Pro version & the lagging persists...
Could it be anything to do with the bit rate of the blu ray rip being too high?
It's 5.2Gb in size and full HD 1080p...

I don't know if I'm missing something here but, why would you want to play 1080p files on a 7 inch screen? My 1080p movies in mkv format are anything from 10gb to 30gb.
I transcode with dvdfab or similar which brings an HD movie down to not much more than 1gb at the quality is still brilliant! And there are no problems in read speeds and loads can be stored.
Or did I miss the point somewhere?

Or I could do 720P HD rips, keeping a high bitrate keeps higher quality. And as you said, on a 7'' screen there's not much difference in 720P & 1080P...
Even on my 32'' LED IPS 1080P TV, comparing 720P & 1080P can be difficult at times...

There's your problem. Only the default stock samsung roms have proper 1080p playback. Not to mention HW decoding of WMV.

Had this problem too on cm roms but bsplayer works flawlessly. Used it on all cm based Roms to stream and play local hd movies. Also has an option to offset audio delays.

Can the tab play 720p .mkv movies?

I am a little disappointed in the Xoom for not being able to play 720p mkv files properly.
I have a lot of .mkv video files and I love to watch movies on a tablet.
So can the galaxy tab play 720p mkv files without problem?
Well i didn't know that whether Galaxy play or not but the new MacBook pro can play 720p video.

mkv is a container. If the video was encoded using h.264, the tab will play.
Wtf, why bother mentioning a macbook? Are you on pills, or did you forget to take them??
The Sgt plays all kinds of videos, even 1080p without any problems.
Yes, the SGT can play 720p .mkvs with no issue, it's something I do on a regular basis with mine.

The tab handles greatly hd video. For some reason it even supports mkv and external subtitles with the built in player. Aaaand my mid 2008 MacBook already plays with no issue full hd video, so it goes without question that a newer cpu coupled with a decent/good video chip will play a simple 720p file XD

Galaxy Tab is a good video player and play the most formats. Only if it has stereo sound. It cant handle multichannel audio.
And a sad thing is that most of the mvk movies has multichannel 5.1 DD dts etc. So you need to convert them ao you get stereo sound or it wont play the movie.
Galaxy Tab has a really good stock player. Rockplayer vplayer cant compare to the stock one that works great.
I belive that those who have problems whit playing movies whit xoom, have movies whit multichannel. Have not got any answer if android 3.0 can handle it. I now that android 2.2 Cant handle it and had hopes that 3.0 should play multichannel.

And if you change the coding inside the srt file you can have greek subtitles too

I hope your talking about 70mb SD encodes cause 70mb 720p would give you major eye cancer .
I dont think its the file size its probably the way the file has been encoded down to 70mb thats the problem. Since i have not had a problem playing anime i would watch on my pc.
I have just watched [Coalgirls]_Shiki_01_(1280x720_Blu-Ray_FLAC)_[5B75CA00] (430mb)(bitrate : 1600 kbps) with no problems. No lag in audio or subtitles and video was like 95% smooth, only the occasional jerk for a second when panning. Try a normal sd encode @ like 200ish mb.
I also had no problem playing The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya NCED theme (Hare Hare Yukai) SD video with karaoke soft-sub from here in the test videos part. Which is 30mb & bitrate: 3400 kbps.
My phone is rooted and bloat removed dont know if that helps....?
No man i got mine from minitheatre.org some small awesome anime encodes i thnk ur right that a few big ones play well i noticed sd ones work perfect its only hd ones i have trouble with them i use MX player ill test ur file to see if its working an all. Also I love bleach so put many bleach eps which i rewatch bout 100 times a day lolz on ma xperia play to but in 480p.
A lot of the higher quality anime I tried was lagging. I just use 480p most of the time now

Update! PROGRESS! Probably some minor bugs and we are A-OK!

Hey now this is GOOD NEWS!
Every since I have had this machine I haven't been able to play HD and I mean Hiiiiigh Definition 720 Mp4 files.
What always happens when I played them they fastforwarded by itself but with the MX player you have the option to play via H/S or S/H meaning play with software or playing with hardware software.
So you simple set to (surprisingly S/H) you can now play those HD files that are 720p and also hear the sound and in sync and everything, before I had to use handbrake and wait for 7 hours to decode a movie from 720 HD Mp4 TO 720 HD Mp4 (weird) using xoom setting wit Handbrake.
Now I can watch HD movies on my tab finally without conversion!
Next step MKV files! Can be seen excellent on Mobo player but without sound and with VLplayer you can hear sound and see the image but the video stutters all the time.
Give it up to our developers/modders! That managed to fix one CRUCIAL AND COMMERCIAL function!
Cheers!
07/08/2011 Edit: MX Video Player got an update and can now play MKV with new feature setting S/W Decoder (fast mode) and High Definition 720p mkv's can now be played with little or no lag! Awesome!

Try using an app called 'dice player' from the marketplace.
There is a trial version available, to see whether your device is compatible. It's hardware accelerated, basically meaning that it should play without lag. I know this from experience as I had the same issue using my advent vega running vegacomb 3.2
If It's on YouTube or iplayer, you have to let it buffer - all you really can do
Hope this helps

+1 for Dice Player.
Works on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G, it plays mkv's without any problems. I downloaded 1080p youtube windows in MP4 format and they play fine. You can download the 3 day trial + the Tegra 2 plugin and test it!!
Another +1 for diceplayer
I bit the bullet and purchased it... very happy with it so far. Rockplayer and the other well known media players very much so pale in comparison to DicePlayer for the galaxy tab 10.1. Not that I had issues with Rock Player on my old Epic, just that diceplayer plays very nicely with the tegra2.
I have been using it with UPNPlay and MediaTomb on my server in my room and it makes video playback very nice in my house. (except that my N router doesn't buffer the high def stuff well)
Copying to the device though, i have never had an issue with anything i have thrown at it.

Unfortunately it is still no go for me. Downloaded Diceplayer Trial + codec and still give me choppy 1080p video playback (better than other player) so I'll hold my card for a while and waiting for other recommendation.
What make me really frustrated is my friend old spec tab 7" can play it with no problem whatsoever.. wtf is wrong with this so called dual core marketing bull****
You can always use Handbrake or something to convert it down to 720p, since it will look exactly the same on the tab. All of my 720p vids work great
first you are totally right my galaxy tab7 0n anndroid 2.33 plays 1080 videos much more smootherthan my other tab 10.1 , but remember the humming bird processor in the galaxy tab 7 had a very strong GPU compared to the nvidia tegra gpu so dont consider the galaxy tab 7 a low end device also the galaxy tab 10.1 had to scale for resolution (1280x800 ) while the galaxy tab 7 scales for only (1024 x600 )which is a bigger load on the galaxy tab 10.1 Gpu
second there were a similar problem in the motorola xoom forum and they reached a conclusion that the problem is in the honeycomb compitability with nvidia drivers in some videos extensions not all 1080 p videos lag but only some and may be fixed by a second update or by the release of icecream sandwitch so try to

can I just ask why you want to play 1080p video in the first place? the gtab 10.1's resolution is barely over 720p so you will see no quality difference when playing 1080p, if anything it will be worse as it wont play as smoothly.

The usual answer to this question is because they have loads of 1080p videos already, and don't want to re-encode for the GT10.1.
Simple answer though is that the Tegra-2 SoC doesn't support 1080p in hardware for anything other than baseline profile, whereas the Hummingbird SoC in the GT7 supports baseline, main, and high profile (nothing to do with the screen size).

Dave

You can check it by going to the video properties on your preferred video player on your pc,im pretty sure most mkv files are 8 bit.
is the 8bit restriction a limitation of the hardware, or of the (mxvideo)player?

Im not really sure about that but whenever i tried to play 10 bit mkv video on mxvideoplayer with hardware decoding, it gave me a black screen.
Dice
You might want to try Dice player as well, i had loads of mkv rips that would not play audio on other players but dice has never failed me on mkv's

I tried dice player it doesnt work. so far mxvideoplayer, dice player and moboplayer doesnt work for 10 bit mkv with H/W.
I'm not sure if there are any players that can play 10bit files at the moment. For general mkv's I've been using Dice Player as it has been able to play all my files on my Asus transformer which other players weren't able to. But since the exynos processor is far superior to the tegra2 I would think any player that has hardware accelerated playback will suffice.
Most recently I've been using BS player as well for playing mkv's stored on my NAS streamed over wifi. This is the only player that seems to be able to play 720p video smoothly over wifi.
Stock Samsung player can't play MKV like Galaxy S and Galaxy SII?!? It's the best HW player for my SII...

I use MoboPlayer, it can play almost video formats well.
But I also got aneesoft video converter to help me do some conversions when need, and it let me to play HD, and AVCHD videos that shot by HD camcorder smoothly.
Aneesoft? Never heard of that. I'm looking for a .mov converter as the tablet converter had trouble with my .mov files.
Is that the best converter out there?

Well, aneesoft video converter can convert the .MOV video well for my tablet, it has a special output selection for tablet, so you just need to choose your tablet model as output.
I'll echo the mx player recommendation; I like its rendering options and subtitle support among other things. Lack of hi10p support is a hardware limitation. Video with 10-bit color profiles is just too new and (at least afaik) isn't supported by any current hardware. And of course mobile cpus lack the compute muscle to decode decent-quality x.264 smoothly. So as others have said, transcoding on your computer is your best bet. If you don't know anything about video encoding, try http://hi10ptranscoder.wordpress.com/. It's a simple program for this exact problem.
For me Dice-player had stuttering every 10 secs on some .mkv-files. The stock player doesn't stutter, but it also doesn't support movies with DTS-sound.
MX Player seems to work the best and it also has an option for SW-decoding the sound if a file has DTS-sound. (Have to change it from the default HW-decoding to hear sound.)
No need to worry about 8 or 10 bit - there are NO rips with 10bit of any movies, 720p, 1080p - all are OK...EXCEPT some crazy anime, seen them - I really don't get this 10 bit hype - just some ultra-grainy stuff...
Stock video player can play MKV smoothly , why bother to use another player ?

Stock player doesnt play audio if the mkv contains DTS track.
MX Video player for me is the best. Without chainging the H/W decoding i just selecting the DTS audio track and plays it perfect.
I have done tests with heavy mkc samples with 20-40MBPS with DTS sound and it plays it so smooth. Smoother than my expensive O2 HMR-2000!
My oldest Galaxy S2 plays them perfect too but with same samples i have some frame drops some times even if i have it at 1.6GHz.
It seems tab 7.7 doesnt have excactly the same cpu/gpu. At papers it is the same. But not in real life. Maybe the memory or the controler or the chipset or the architecture? I dont know.
It plays PERFECT any mkv with DTS and it is an great media player. The only problem is to read NTFS HDD's. Because the fullHD / full length good quality movies is always bigger than 4GB's that the file system of TAB can read.

Ntfssd can read NTFS sdcard, Drive Mount can read OTG NTFS or EXT storage devices. These two app are free in Market.
I would have to chime in and say MX-Video player is the best especially on how it handles video stretching, the stock player cant really cover the entire screen and both dice and mvideo player zooms the image to fit the screen, only MX video player stretches it properly to cover the entire screen, pretty nice if your using a honeybar
