Anyone got hd video playing smoothly with tab 10.1? This is frustrating because my friend can play hd video very smooth on his original tab 7" while I can't
Try using an app called 'dice player' from the marketplace.
There is a trial version available, to see whether your device is compatible. It's hardware accelerated, basically meaning that it should play without lag. I know this from experience as I had the same issue using my advent vega running vegacomb 3.2
If It's on YouTube or iplayer, you have to let it buffer - all you really can do

I got a few hardware accelerated player rockplayer and mx player.. still.. both failed to play 1080p videos smoothly..

I bit the bullet and purchased it... very happy with it so far. Rockplayer and the other well known media players very much so pale in comparison to DicePlayer for the galaxy tab 10.1. Not that I had issues with Rock Player on my old Epic, just that diceplayer plays very nicely with the tegra2.

Unfortunately it is still no go for me. Downloaded Diceplayer Trial + codec and still give me choppy 1080p video playback (better than other player) so I'll hold my card for a while and waiting for other recommendation.
What make me really frustrated is my friend old spec tab 7" can play it with no problem whatsoever.. wtf is wrong with this so called dual core marketing bull****
You can always use Handbrake or something to convert it down to 720p, since it will look exactly the same on the tab. All of my 720p vids work great
first you are totally right my galaxy tab7 0n anndroid 2.33 plays 1080 videos much more smootherthan my other tab 10.1 , but remember the humming bird processor in the galaxy tab 7 had a very strong GPU compared to the nvidia tegra gpu so dont consider the galaxy tab 7 a low end device also the galaxy tab 10.1 had to scale for resolution (1280x800 ) while the galaxy tab 7 scales for only (1024 x600 )which is a bigger load on the galaxy tab 10.1 Gpu
second there were a similar problem in the motorola xoom forum and they reached a conclusion that the problem is in the honeycomb compitability with nvidia drivers in some videos extensions not all 1080 p videos lag but only some and may be fixed by a second update or by the release of icecream sandwitch so try to

Hi! How do you get your MKVs onto the Tab? My Windows Explorer crashes everytime I try to upload an MKV file onto the Tab 10.1! It's so frustrating!
I've never been able to upload an MKV succesfully before!
Please help!

can I just ask why you want to play 1080p video in the first place? the gtab 10.1's resolution is barely over 720p so you will see no quality difference when playing 1080p, if anything it will be worse as it wont play as smoothly.

The usual answer to this question is because they have loads of 1080p videos already, and don't want to re-encode for the GT10.1.
Simple answer though is that the Tegra-2 SoC doesn't support 1080p in hardware for anything other than baseline profile, whereas the Hummingbird SoC in the GT7 supports baseline, main, and high profile (nothing to do with the screen size).

The point is that it is easier to put movies directly on the device instead of converting it to 720

I guess your windows is broken since I (and other) have no problem transferring any files to my tab. You can try using alternative explorer such as directory opus or xplorer2

mkv is a container. If the video was encoded using h.264, the tab will play.
Wtf, why bother mentioning a macbook? Are you on pills, or did you forget to take them??
The Sgt plays all kinds of videos, even 1080p without any problems.
Yes, the SGT can play 720p .mkvs with no issue, it's something I do on a regular basis with mine.

The tab handles greatly hd video. For some reason it even supports mkv and external subtitles with the built in player. Aaaand my mid 2008 MacBook already plays with no issue full hd video, so it goes without question that a newer cpu coupled with a decent/good video chip will play a simple 720p file XD

Galaxy Tab is a good video player and play the most formats. Only if it has stereo sound. It cant handle multichannel audio.
And a sad thing is that most of the mvk movies has multichannel 5.1 DD dts etc. So you need to convert them ao you get stereo sound or it wont play the movie.
Galaxy Tab has a really good stock player. Rockplayer vplayer cant compare to the stock one that works great.
I belive that those who have problems whit playing movies whit xoom, have movies whit multichannel. Have not got any answer if android 3.0 can handle it. I now that android 2.2 Cant handle it and had hopes that 3.0 should play multichannel.

i have test it with any 720p .mkv movies multichannel or not and plays them perfect with the build in player. Ultra smooth and very low battery usage.
And if you change the coding inside the srt file you can have greek subtitles too

What version of the Galaxy Tab do you have?? (Sprint, Verizon, Locked / Unlocked etc..??)
I've read a few reviews of the Xoom and now the Transformer that mention issues playing back 720p or higher HD video. Stuttering, etc. Is there any truth to this? Flash HD video I know stutters but honestly it skips on my Core2Duo PC. I'm just referring to standard video files I might load from my microSD card.

Just got mine today.
I put a 720p MKV of a tv show and used RockPlayer.
It was not pretty in either hardware or software decode mode.
You have to check that profile those HD videos are using.
Tegra 2 can decode 720p high and 1080p baseline or main (not sure here), the problem is that Honeycomb is not fully optimized yet to use all Tegra 2 acceleration features.
I think that if you re-encode those HD videos to baseline profile, they should run smooth.
There will be an upgrade from Adobe for flash to hardware accelerate 720p videos on these mobile SoC, but it needs Honeycomb 3.1, it's still not available yet.
So is the problem honeycomb or is it the Tegra 2? I can live with it being Honeycomb but I don't want to buy weak hardware.
Supposedly, MoboPlayer and VitalPlayer are better than RockPlayer.
Have you guys tried HD videos using either?

This. Mobo Player runs 720p mkv files with subs flawlessly. Now if only I could customize the bottom dock to go away.

Hi Jocelyn,
I don't know what mkv files you are trying to play, but either in software or hardware mode they suck for me. I watch Naruto Anime and its horrible using moboplayer. I don't discredit moboplayer devs as they have come up with the only player on the android market that works for most files, but mob do not work smoothly. As for other file types, they work flawlessly. I have converted StarTrek and DespicableMe and they play beautifully without lag or skipping.

I'm using 1.2 and watching Steins;Gate right now. All the mkv files I watch came that way and have never been converted by me.

Its not a honeycomb issue. Its a tegra 2 issue and it is not a software issue its hardware. H.264 does not work good or at all. You have to use MPEG4. I used a 720p video that plays great on my ipad 2 and had to convert to mpeg4. I tried to get good quality from MPEG4 and it increased the file size from 5.6 to 9 gigs. I swore to never buy a tegra 2 device again after testing other tegra 2 tablet & phone but I keep getting sucked back in by the hype. I hate apple but I have nothing but good things to say about the ipad 2. Everything just works and its way way faster.

And this one plays without stuttering and lag? What's the bitrate? Almost all of the series I have are in 720p with [email protected] and bitrate around 4mbps. Most of them aren't even downloadable at 1080p so I don't mind if these 720p are just working fine.

This is what confuses me, I keep hearing it's honeycomb (and hence s/w issue which should be fixable by s/w udpate) and then I hear it's Tegra 2 issue (and hence h/w issue which can only be fixed with Tegra 3 device).
If it is Tegra 2 issue, I am leaning towards canceling my order and waiting for Tegra3. I have a lot of videos which are H264 720p Hi profile that I was hoping to watch on the TF.
I currently have a SGT which will tide me over....
What I would like is some confirmation that is indeed h/w issue....

Its a shame that the Archos 101 plays 720p mkvs just fine and the tegra 2 sucks at it, hope this will be fixed soon!

Another user posted a Handbrake profile in that thread to get your mp4/mkv to play smoothly on the stock Honeycomb build (assuming it's software related). The only downside to this profile is that it will double your file size since it's baseline and uses less compression.
As for the hardware vs software issue, we should know soon assuming Google releases HC 3.1 at the Google I/O conference May 10th.
Can somebody give a final word on video playback. I intend to watch movies from a portable harddrive and am curious what files have had success, quality, and overall experience with Iconia as a movie player.

After trying multiple players and a few different file types, the only reliable medium that I've found for playing movies on the A500 is AVI, and something on the order of 1280x540 (or there abouts as depending on the movie, the 1280 is consistent but the 540 varies a bit.) MP4's and MKV's are all stuttering messes with distorted sound.
HC 3.1 looks like it'll fix things a bit coming in June.

So let me get this straight. My Samsung Galaxy S can play anything including .mkv with multiple streams but the Iconia can not? Without conversion even 1080P movies.
I was hoping that a tab with dual core soc and 1GB DD3 ram would play those files without a problem.

For the most part, the problem here is that Samsung added in additional codec support with hardware acceleration into the Android frameworks, whereas all current Honeycomb devices seem to just support the "core" Android codecs.
I have the same issue in that my single core 7" Galaxy Tab is generally a better video player than my dual core Tegra-powered tablet.

I wanted to buy a tablet mainly for watching movies, since holding a laptop all that time and during summer isn't the best solution.
Since video playback was superb on the Galaxy devices, does this mean that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will have similar capabilities? Does the GT 10.1v have the same capabilities? If yes then the Galaxy Tab just returned to the no.1 spot on my "tablet to be" list. Too bad it doesn't have all the port on it.
Will go and check the 10.1v forum too.
I have found that "ES File Explorer"'s built in movie player does a great job at .m4v and .mp4 (formatted for the iPad). Smooth playback. Also, "Moboplayer" does a better job than the stock movie player.
My issue is finding a file type my xBox and my DirectV DVR like. I can share the media to both devices, but they don't support the .m4v and .MP4.

As far as I'm aware, the 10.1v, 10.1 and 8.9 Galaxy Tabs are still Tegra-2 based, and have the same limitations as any other Honeycomb Tegra-2 tablet (e.g. Iconia, Transformer, Xoom etc).
That being said, I believe the Froyo-based Viewsonic GTablet is also Tegra-2 based, yet had additional codec support built in to the Android frameworks, so a lot of this is a Honeycomb issue, rather than a Tegra-2 issue.

I have had some luck using xvid4psp to convert my mkv/mp4/m4v files to baseline 3.1 mp4 files with little to no change in file size (720P is all I've tried so far). Quality is excellent clear.fi finds them locally and on my windows home server.
I'm not a video quality freak, but to my eyes there is no change in video quality. The sound on the other hand was converted from AC3/DTS to AAC so there is audio degradation on the whole, but I'm not someone who cares an awful lot about that either.
I stongly recommend the MoboPlayer. It will download a codec pack after you install it, and after than has been able to play every video file I threw at it. It'll use GPU hardware decoding depending on the codec, or offer to play using software.

I'm using Rockplayer as a carry over from my HTC Evo, and it plays everything I've thrown at it. There's a free and donate version. The free version is in the Market.
Does the native player of Xoom also plays 1080p video files
ie. mp4, avi, wmv, etc.
If not, does other players like vplayer, mobo could make this possible?
I doubt as Motorola Web and Wikipedia say the Xoom can play
"Up to 720p video" but sure it's not quite enough as long as HDMI it to a 32" TV.

true. 1080p will trouble as much to bill clinton.
you can convert a 1080p mkv to mp4 format and it will play with no issues. or converting, i suggest DVDCatalyst.
See, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 states 1080p video playback

All the tegra 2 tablets are similar software wise.
The 10.1 won't play videos any better than the xoom. Return your android tablet if you expect it to replace windows.
I've surveyed many of the players on the Android market yesterday,
and most won't play a 720p x264 Mkv with ac3.
Best is qqplayer. Next best is vplayer, but really it can't either,
So only qqplayer. If anyone knows better, please speak up.

Using Moboplayer (from market) with Tiamat 2.2, 1080p video will just about play, but its not ideal.
720p is fine.
I only play file resolutions up to 720p on the Xoom because of the native resolution. I use Mobo player for my .avi and DVD Catalyst converted .mp4 files but if I am in a rush and have a high bit rate 720p .mkv file, the Dice player plays everything I throw at it. I have monitored my usage of both and I really mainly use Mobo. Dice comes in handy when I just don't want to wait for a conversion because I am heading out on short notice and is the only player I have found to play high bit rate 720p .mkv x.264 files. I prefer converting because I can give the video files a color boost in DVD Catalyst since videos seem to lose their punch on the Xoom screen.

My past Samsung infuse with 1.2ghz single core processor was able to play 1080p itunes trailers but xoom tablet struggles.
Also Xoom has native support for .mp4 files and .mov/.mkv/.avi requires extra treatment whether extra player or software decoding.

why companies release crippled products to market?
The end user is left to work out what is working and what is not.
Xoom is upper range product and it is not acceptable that it can't play 1080p files smoothly.

The Xoom does play 1080p but how well depends on the codec and player. As for why you would want to play 1080p videos on a 720p screen, I just can't comprehend. It will not look better because the screen resolution is lower than 1080p. If you played 1080p on any screen lower than 1920x1080 pixels you will not be getting the benefit of the 1080p resolution.

If you must keep the resolution at 1080p then the best thing for stutter free playback is at least convert into an .mp4 which DVD Catalyst does but again, there will not be noticeable quality increase over a 720p. If I had a 1080p .mkv that I wanted to play on the Xoom, that would be one of the times when I would prefer convert or downsize but for everything else including 720p .mkv, we no longer need to convert.

From my perspective you are badly missing the point - what use is a tablet that can play videos if you have to carry around a pc to convert them first. Its a pain in the butt.

I use Dice Player to play all my video. It is easily the best HD movie player out there and plays high profile 720p but I haven't tried 1080p. As I don't have a 1080p TV, there's no need. Check out the Dice Player trial.

Thats just the thing though, we need to be realistic. You don't have to convert any videos other than high bit rate 1080p which even if you were only using a desktop PC you would need to meet a system requirement to play. Tablets like these are new. Could you imagine a few years ago having a 1Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM and being pissed it wont play my 1080p movie in 3D? The Xoom is one of the first of it's kind and was never designed to play high bit rate 1080p and you find that a bother. It's like buying an Ipod 8 yrs ago then saying what good is this if all my CD's wont play on it. You had to rip & convert everything or buy the file which was still then converted. The screen is 720p. Most shows on T.V. are 720p or upscaled 720p (1080i). Where are you getting 1080p videos from, Blu Ray and digital copies which all need to be 'converted' in order to become a portable file on any system unless you have a disc player or made a 20GB image rip. Its not a pain in the butt to have to only convert one file type. My laptop is very powerful but cant play movies in 3D yet my T.V. can, should I be upset? I should add, Dice player is still the way to go to play all files with no conversion unless you want to play high bit rate 1080p on a screen not designed for it.
I was guna go for the prime bt there is just too many issues with it. I mainly download movies through torrent and watch it straight away on the tab and I would like to know is 720/1080p playback smooth at all? (not on YouTube) thank you
yes playback is smooth. it will any video as long as its codec is supported.

From my experience this isn't entirely true. I've had difficulties playing some .wmv and .mp4 files but I'm not knowledgable enough to understand why.
seems like i should just go for the prime or wait for another t3 tab
I use Dice Player and it plays every AVI and MKV file I have thrown at it, no lag and no worries. Video playback is my main use for the 7.7 and i've had no issues with it. I intentionally went for the 7.7 with its Exynos over the Tegra2 tablets and i'm glad i did.
Yes dice seems to play more than others like MX does.
I use both mx and dice - dice for the ones MX doesn't like!
Video performance is generally great with a mixture of avi/mkv and mp4 all with a mixture of stereo/ac3/dts soundtracks.
Highly recommended device.

I'd get the galaxy tab or wait. I had two primes and though the tablet on its own is great, there is no GPS and Wifi reception is weak. Lots of reboots. The aluminum back was a design flaw affecting reception and Asus is already replacing the device with newer models with plastic parts over the antenna similar to the 7.7. I see the prime relegated to the closet soon due to its problems.
In comparison I found the samsung to be close to the prime in performance, better in some areas, but the screen is way better IMHO. Can't wait for ICS.

i am still struggling because i had 2 720p mkv (x264 dexter 1.61gb and x264 suits 1.42gb) on my 10.1 before and i can play suits using DICE with no problem but dexter is just not watchable. i am aware of the 10-bit mkv problem but when i click more info on my mac it doesn't tell me whether it is 8 or 10 bit. i mainly jus download the video on my tab and if i cant watch it, it is very annoying as i dont like wasting time to download a lower quality one lol
any1 knows is the 10 bit due to the hardware or software problem?
and if i open the tab, it is not possible to have a refund as this is not the fault of the product....

There is a hardware video decode chip in the tab that handles video, up to 1080p high profile h.264. However, 10-bit color profiles are a fairly recent advance in encoding, so the hardware does not support it (I have yet to see any hardware that does, in fact). On your desktop, your cpu can handle the decoding, but of course your desktop cpu is much more powerful than the two cortex A9s in Exynos. MX will show you if hardware decoding isn't supported, in which case you're basically screwed for high-bitrate video of any kind.

you don't have to worry about mkv playback here in the galaxy tab 7.7 because unlike the 10.1 which sports a crappy tegra 2 processor which can only play baseline profile x264/h264 encoded vids, the gtab7.7 uses an Exynos processor which happily decodes high profile x264/h264 videos
