Can the Galaxy Tab play high-profile .mkv files flawlessly?
What I am talking about is 720p .mkv files with high bit rate ( 4,000+ kbps ) without DTS sound (just AAC sound) flawlessly?
The Xoom is having problem in this department.
Also, what player do you use? Default, or Rockplayer or others?
Standard video player plays 1080p and 720p without any problem...

i use mVideoplayer, like it that it can extract subtitles from mkv.
Stock video player has played everything for me fine

High bit rate 4mbps? Compared to what, a cellphone video? XD
I got the tab to read PERFECTLY a full hd beast peaking roughly at 40mbps. H264, obviously. Was an mp4, but i doubt that a container will make any difference, i did watch several 720p mkv on the tab anyway.
Oh, i almost forgot: all this with the built in player. Using rockplayer in software mode, that 1080p beast ran at 2-3 fps.

I have played 720p MKV file. But no player seems to play it smoothly. And most of them does not play the sound audibly.
Worse, the stock player do not even recognize the file type. H264 videos are flawless.
any suggestions for the MKV player?

I watched like 6 episodes of Panty and Stocking with the stock player. MKV with subtitles (i had to convert them into srt and put them outside the MKV container...) in 720p and clearly with h264 video and aac audio.
There is maybe something wrong with your player?

I've got some mixed results.
Most files play fine, 1080p or 720p, but it has problems with some files with only DTS or AC3 sound included.
While the galaxy tab is the best media playing tablet I've tried (not tried the archos 101) it failed to play a 720p blu ray rip with 9 reference frames I think it was encoded with matroska libraries later than 1.0
Stock Player is amazing. I cannot stress that enough. It can play 1080p and 720p high profile mp4 h.264 videos flawlessly. Only gripe is the non-support for > 2ch audio, but this can be easily remedied via an audio demux with Yamb -> downmix to stereo -> mux new audio with Yamb.
I don't even watch movies on my HTPC anymore, I just downmix the audio, leave the video alone, and paste the file unto my device.

I found that using Rockplayer universal with hardware decoding mode plays just as well as the stock play but with the added function of allowing you to choose which audio track to use. However if you have an integrated sub title track mvideoplayer is better. However what the device can play isn't limited to profiles, as I found the tab can play high profile but content encoded with some of the newer matroska libraries, it struggles with.
I watch a lot of anime and that would be the primary function of this tablet for me. I was wondering if this tablet could handle the 720p/1080p mkv files encoded in h624. and also if they support subtitles.

I got lots of anime 720P MKV files. They won't play on any Tegra 2 tablet I've had, including this one.
There video player apps in the Market that will play MKV.. but they don't usually support hardware acceleration so it'll prolly be very choppy :/
There's not a tablet out in existence im aware of that can play MKV with hardware accel.. sigh.
Galaxy Tab 7" can, and I suspect the HTC Flyer could too.

First thing I do with all my anime mkv is to convert them to mp4 with the subs burned in, with Handbrake. I prefer this because it takes the guess work out of not knowing if this device will play such and such mkv, and everything handles mp4 nowadays moreso than mkv. Even Archos devices that are the king of media codecs and formats have problems with some mkv files even, because as a container an mkv file could contain a myriad combo of codecs.

Same here. I'm just using handbrake to convert all my movies to mp4 so there is no worry. Handbrake will let you queue up items so you can basically just let it run.

When the TouchWiz update comes out expect this tablet to get a lot more media friendly.
Mine would appear to play mkv files no problem, although I can't control them, fast forward or jump to a certain point, which means I wouldn't want to rely on it.
(Stock player and Vplayer on 3.1)

don't bet on it. tergra 2 can't handle the throughput of most high profile hd. it can handle some but it's very picky. it also chokes on ac3 and has a hard time with aac multichannel sound. i have some multichanel files that'll play and some won't.
tegra 2 is no media powerhouse. imho the archos 101 is still the best for all the files it can play, but it's quality is lackluster... and the screen sucks.
It doesn't do it natively, but MoboPlayer is a great app (free) for it. It will handle 720p MKV no problem.
it can handle some 720p mkv. its very hard to make a general statement for files higher than main profile and 2 channel sound.
tegra is limited on media playback. check all the other tegra 2 forums. this is the reason boxee box dropped tegra 2.
don't get me wrong, I love the tablet, but there are some limitations to expect with media playback. it's not even as goog as the gt7".

Tegra 2 has awful performance in alot of areas. Video playback and portrait view basically slow it to a crawl.

I hardly think portrait view slowing down has to do with the hardware. More likely HC.
I use my tab for MKV's all the time. RockPlayer Lite handles it like a champ. Perfect audio and all. Scrubbing works fine too. Just select software decoding mode when playing the videos
I found a program caled XenonMKV which rips the mp4 out of the mkv container and converts the audio to aac. It's a much faster process since there is no video re-encoding involved and it works 'ok'. It still skips a bit but it at least kind of works smoothly most of the time.
EDIT: tried RockPlayer Lite Software & Hardware and it was still stuttery from time to time. (3500kbps 720p mkv and mp4 from XenonMKV)
I think if you had a Max bitrate of about 3mbps or less and it wasn't AC3 it could do it.

Did you actually test this ?
I'm very concerned about video support in honeycomb tablets, and in galaxy tab in particular. I don't understand why, but it seems this feature has been left behind in every honeycomb tablet, whereas SGS and SGS 2 handle 720p mkv with hardware acceleration very well in stock video player. I just don't understand what the manufacturers are doing.
I can't even transfer that large of a file on my tab. It hangs and stops at the end. Weird.
Handbrake is free and works like a champ to convert any file. I'm using it on the @pple tv2 settings with some minor tweaks

this. also, if the movie is quite slow (not much of on screen action, etc) i had good results at around 5mbps too and mp3 audio.
Does the native player of Xoom also plays 1080p video files
ie. mp4, avi, wmv, etc.
If not, does other players like vplayer, mobo could make this possible?
I doubt as Motorola Web and Wikipedia say the Xoom can play
"Up to 720p video" but sure it's not quite enough as long as HDMI it to a 32" TV.
Therefore is it possible for Xoom playing 1080p video smoothly?

true. 1080p will trouble as much to bill clinton.
you can convert a 1080p mkv to mp4 format and it will play with no issues. or converting, i suggest DVDCatalyst.
See, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 states 1080p video playback
I wonder is there any meaning the video playback ability of GT10.1

All the tegra 2 tablets are similar software wise.
The 10.1 won't play videos any better than the xoom. Return your android tablet if you expect it to replace windows.
I've surveyed many of the players on the Android market yesterday,
and most won't play a 720p x264 Mkv with ac3.
Best is qqplayer. Next best is vplayer, but really it can't either,
So only qqplayer. If anyone knows better, please speak up.
Otherwise, use plex it is the best transcoding streaming player around..

Using Moboplayer (from market) with Tiamat 2.2, 1080p video will just about play, but its not ideal.
720p is fine.
I only play file resolutions up to 720p on the Xoom because of the native resolution. I use Mobo player for my .avi and DVD Catalyst converted .mp4 files but if I am in a rush and have a high bit rate 720p .mkv file, the Dice player plays everything I throw at it. I have monitored my usage of both and I really mainly use Mobo. Dice comes in handy when I just don't want to wait for a conversion because I am heading out on short notice and is the only player I have found to play high bit rate 720p .mkv x.264 files. I prefer converting because I can give the video files a color boost in DVD Catalyst since videos seem to lose their punch on the Xoom screen.

I've had good results with BSPlayer.
One thing is beyond my understanding.
My past Samsung infuse with 1.2ghz single core processor was able to play 1080p itunes trailers but xoom tablet struggles.
Also Xoom has native support for .mp4 files and .mov/.mkv/.avi requires extra treatment whether extra player or software decoding.

why companies release crippled products to market?
The end user is left to work out what is working and what is not.
Xoom is upper range product and it is not acceptable that it can't play 1080p files smoothly.

The Xoom does play 1080p but how well depends on the codec and player. As for why you would want to play 1080p videos on a 720p screen, I just can't comprehend. It will not look better because the screen resolution is lower than 1080p. If you played 1080p on any screen lower than 1920x1080 pixels you will not be getting the benefit of the 1080p resolution.

From my perspective you are badly missing the point - what use is a tablet that can play videos if you have to carry around a pc to convert them first. Its a pain in the butt.

I use Dice Player to play all my video. It is easily the best HD movie player out there and plays high profile 720p but I haven't tried 1080p. As I don't have a 1080p TV, there's no need. Check out the Dice Player trial.

Thats just the thing though, we need to be realistic. You don't have to convert any videos other than high bit rate 1080p which even if you were only using a desktop PC you would need to meet a system requirement to play. Tablets like these are new. Could you imagine a few years ago having a 1Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM and being pissed it wont play my 1080p movie in 3D? The Xoom is one of the first of it's kind and was never designed to play high bit rate 1080p and you find that a bother. It's like buying an Ipod 8 yrs ago then saying what good is this if all my CD's wont play on it. You had to rip & convert everything or buy the file which was still then converted. The screen is 720p. Most shows on T.V. are 720p or upscaled 720p (1080i). Where are you getting 1080p videos from, Blu Ray and digital copies which all need to be 'converted' in order to become a portable file on any system unless you have a disc player or made a 20GB image rip. Its not a pain in the butt to have to only convert one file type. My laptop is very powerful but cant play movies in 3D yet my T.V. can, should I be upset? I should add, Dice player is still the way to go to play all files with no conversion unless you want to play high bit rate 1080p on a screen not designed for it.

Try using an app called 'dice player' from the marketplace.
There is a trial version available, to see whether your device is compatible. It's hardware accelerated, basically meaning that it should play without lag. I know this from experience as I had the same issue using my advent vega running vegacomb 3.2
If It's on YouTube or iplayer, you have to let it buffer - all you really can do

I got a few hardware accelerated player rockplayer and mx player.. still.. both failed to play 1080p videos smoothly..

I bit the bullet and purchased it... very happy with it so far. Rockplayer and the other well known media players very much so pale in comparison to DicePlayer for the galaxy tab 10.1. Not that I had issues with Rock Player on my old Epic, just that diceplayer plays very nicely with the tegra2.

Unfortunately it is still no go for me. Downloaded Diceplayer Trial + codec and still give me choppy 1080p video playback (better than other player) so I'll hold my card for a while and waiting for other recommendation.
What make me really frustrated is my friend old spec tab 7" can play it with no problem whatsoever.. wtf is wrong with this so called dual core marketing bull****
You can always use Handbrake or something to convert it down to 720p, since it will look exactly the same on the tab. All of my 720p vids work great
first you are totally right my galaxy tab7 0n anndroid 2.33 plays 1080 videos much more smootherthan my other tab 10.1 , but remember the humming bird processor in the galaxy tab 7 had a very strong GPU compared to the nvidia tegra gpu so dont consider the galaxy tab 7 a low end device also the galaxy tab 10.1 had to scale for resolution (1280x800 ) while the galaxy tab 7 scales for only (1024 x600 )which is a bigger load on the galaxy tab 10.1 Gpu
second there were a similar problem in the motorola xoom forum and they reached a conclusion that the problem is in the honeycomb compitability with nvidia drivers in some videos extensions not all 1080 p videos lag but only some and may be fixed by a second update or by the release of icecream sandwitch so try to

Hi! How do you get your MKVs onto the Tab? My Windows Explorer crashes everytime I try to upload an MKV file onto the Tab 10.1! It's so frustrating!
I've never been able to upload an MKV succesfully before!
Please help!
EDIT: I also bought DicePlayer from the market! This is an excellent app! If I remux 720p MKVs into MP4s and downsample AC3/DTS to 2channel stereo AAC files. The quality on the player is great! I can see a lag occasionally though! It's most definately a drivers issue!
I've never tried to play a 1080p MP4 though.
I've had some success playing 1080p VC1 video files though aka WMV (Windows Media Video) files on the native video player without any issues! The video is silky smooth!
can I just ask why you want to play 1080p video in the first place? the gtab 10.1's resolution is barely over 720p so you will see no quality difference when playing 1080p, if anything it will be worse as it wont play as smoothly.

The usual answer to this question is because they have loads of 1080p videos already, and don't want to re-encode for the GT10.1.
Simple answer though is that the Tegra-2 SoC doesn't support 1080p in hardware for anything other than baseline profile, whereas the Hummingbird SoC in the GT7 supports baseline, main, and high profile (nothing to do with the screen size).

The point is that it is easier to put movies directly on the device instead of converting it to 720

I guess your windows is broken since I (and other) have no problem transferring any files to my tab. You can try using alternative explorer such as directory opus or xplorer2

Mxvideoplayer can play mkv 1080p video with H/W , though it only works with 8-bit video, not 10-bit profile.

You can check it by going to the video properties on your preferred video player on your pc,im pretty sure most mkv files are 8 bit.
is the 8bit restriction a limitation of the hardware, or of the (mxvideo)player?

Im not really sure about that but whenever i tried to play 10 bit mkv video on mxvideoplayer with hardware decoding, it gave me a black screen.

You might want to try Dice player as well, i had loads of mkv rips that would not play audio on other players but dice has never failed me on mkv's

I tried dice player it doesnt work. so far mxvideoplayer, dice player and moboplayer doesnt work for 10 bit mkv with H/W.
I'm not sure if there are any players that can play 10bit files at the moment. For general mkv's I've been using Dice Player as it has been able to play all my files on my Asus transformer which other players weren't able to. But since the exynos processor is far superior to the tegra2 I would think any player that has hardware accelerated playback will suffice.
Most recently I've been using BS player as well for playing mkv's stored on my NAS streamed over wifi. This is the only player that seems to be able to play 720p video smoothly over wifi.
Stock Samsung player can't play MKV like Galaxy S and Galaxy SII?!? It's the best HW player for my SII...

I use MoboPlayer, it can play almost video formats well.
But I also got aneesoft video converter to help me do some conversions when need, and it let me to play HD, and AVCHD videos that shot by HD camcorder smoothly.
Aneesoft? Never heard of that. I'm looking for a .mov converter as the tablet converter had trouble with my .mov files.
Is that the best converter out there?

Well, aneesoft video converter can convert the .MOV video well for my tablet, it has a special output selection for tablet, so you just need to choose your tablet model as output.
I'll echo the mx player recommendation; I like its rendering options and subtitle support among other things. Lack of hi10p support is a hardware limitation. Video with 10-bit color profiles is just too new and (at least afaik) isn't supported by any current hardware. And of course mobile cpus lack the compute muscle to decode decent-quality x.264 smoothly. So as others have said, transcoding on your computer is your best bet. If you don't know anything about video encoding, try http://hi10ptranscoder.wordpress.com/. It's a simple program for this exact problem.
For me Dice-player had stuttering every 10 secs on some .mkv-files. The stock player doesn't stutter, but it also doesn't support movies with DTS-sound.
MX Player seems to work the best and it also has an option for SW-decoding the sound if a file has DTS-sound. (Have to change it from the default HW-decoding to hear sound.)
No need to worry about 8 or 10 bit - there are NO rips with 10bit of any movies, 720p, 1080p - all are OK...EXCEPT some crazy anime, seen them - I really don't get this 10 bit hype - just some ultra-grainy stuff...

Stock player doesnt play audio if the mkv contains DTS track.
MX Video player for me is the best. Without chainging the H/W decoding i just selecting the DTS audio track and plays it perfect.
I have done tests with heavy mkc samples with 20-40MBPS with DTS sound and it plays it so smooth. Smoother than my expensive O2 HMR-2000!
My oldest Galaxy S2 plays them perfect too but with same samples i have some frame drops some times even if i have it at 1.6GHz.
It seems tab 7.7 doesnt have excactly the same cpu/gpu. At papers it is the same. But not in real life. Maybe the memory or the controler or the chipset or the architecture? I dont know.
It plays PERFECT any mkv with DTS and it is an great media player. The only problem is to read NTFS HDD's. Because the fullHD / full length good quality movies is always bigger than 4GB's that the file system of TAB can read.

Ntfssd can read NTFS sdcard, Drive Mount can read OTG NTFS or EXT storage devices. These two app are free in Market.
I would have to chime in and say MX-Video player is the best especially on how it handles video stretching, the stock player cant really cover the entire screen and both dice and mvideo player zooms the image to fit the screen, only MX video player stretches it properly to cover the entire screen, pretty nice if your using a honeybar
