I noticed there is no African Galaxy S3 thread, and thought I'd start one where you can discuss and review problems etc.
Personally I bought my S3 earlier this week. (The Pebble Blue 32GB version from Vodacom) I am very happy with it, but I have noticed a very short battery life and some strange signal behaviour (signal sometimes randomly drops to 0 and then returns), but this only happens on areas where the signal isn't too strong to begin with. The only reason I mention it is that my previous phone (S1) did not do this. Also my S1 has a much better battery life, but it is running Jelly Bean, so that is probably a reason why.
How does everyone else find their S3 working on different networks etc? Has anyone from SA rooted their phone and/or installed new firmware? And if so, which modem did you use, and how is reception?
I'm in Ghana, on Airtel. The network is great for me. Loving everything about the phone aside the battery lol.
How about you make this a general African thread?

Alright, I assume there aren't enough south africans alone to keep the thread alive haha. I'll change it.
On MTN no issues at all, I got my white S3 a day before release and rooted and flashed a custom rom an hour after getting home, I'm now on Omega ver 25 and it's amazing,
I have disabled fast dormancy but still now sure if local service providers support it
Anyone know?

I bought my phone from a guy and I can't really tell if it is unlocked or it was done by the voodoo app. I did do a factory reset and it was still the same so am i safe to assume it's an unlocked phone?

I am also not sure what fast dormancy is?
My brother also has the White S3, and sometimes has charging issues where the phone simply doesn't charge (he is still on stock firmware). Have any of you experienced this issue? Is it software related?
Since you flashed a custom ROM without issue I think I will take the plunge too (after backing up as well as I can). I think I will go for one of the leaked JB ROMS though. Will report back later.
In short, fast dormancy is whereby the service provider (when your data connection is idle) tells your phone to disconnect from the network (on data), to save network bandwidth and also battery power. This can cause battery wastage when it is enabled on a phone and service provider does not support it, as the phone stays 'awake' waiting for the service provider to tell it to disconnect from network.
Sorry I dunno if MTN, Vodacom, Cell C or Telkom's network (8ta is it?) support Fast Dormancy. You can 'test' in a way byt using the information on this page http://www.androidnz.net/2012/06/at-your-own-risk-how-to-disable-fast.html. I think you will need root access to your phone for BetterBatteryStats. You definitely will to use the Fast Dormancy Toggle

I contacted Vodacom and they said that they do not support fast dormancy. TI'll be disabling mine too now, thanks for alerting me to the issue.
With the latest Omega Rom (26) and fast dormancy disabled I have so far been using my S3 today for 13 hours and I still have 50 percent battery left, truly amazing!

Impressive, I unfortunately do not have Wi-Fi to use, so I'm always on mobile data. Only use edge though never H/H+.
I'm running whatsapp, viber, and Facebook messenger. And I do tend to browse and use the xda app a lot.
I'm currently at 57% with 5:05 usage and 2:46 screen on. Is that good or bad?

Hey guys. I am from Zambia. Loving my S3 so far (I better be, I paid $1,200 US for it).
Like others have said, battery life is the only issue. On my way to work, I just check up on facebook, browse the engadget app, and sometimes check XDA. within 30-40 minutes, I am down to 85% battery life.
Curious if that is the norm in Southern Africa in general.
What firmware and modem you guys using and which have given you the best results.
Did disabling fast dormancy make a big differance?

Sometimes I wonder if the temperature here plays a big part in our battery drain.

I just disabled my exchange email syncing (it was on push) and that saves a lot of battery. I guess its because it doesn't have true push, so it keeps on connecting to the network to check for email. With push activated my battery drained at about 10-15% per hour without any use, now its down to about 1-2%, which is great news. Now all that is left is to root and disable fast dormancy.
I disabled fast dormancy last night and so far I think it has made a considerable differance, but I got to give it a few days to be sure.
My internet on 3G also seemed faster but that might have just been a good day for me.....over here half the time I get dropped down to edge. Wonder if fast dormancy had any effect on that
Howzit okes I had problems with the battery life when I got my phone but there was 98mb update that came out a few days later and that has solved all my battery issues. BTW do not drop this phone it will break!

Please disable Fast Dormancy as it is not supported by Vodacom.
Enabling it, might reduce your battery!!

Hi all. Just wonder why my battery life is not that great as a lot of ppl claiming. I m using latest codename with latest matr1x cna kernel cpu is set min 100 max 1200 and ondemand governor. Yesterday my battery only last me about 10hrs where i had made about 10 phonecalls send/read 5-10 emails browse xda forum and read bit if news.any ideas?

Well even with your slight over click that is contributing to lower battery life, get rid of some used apps. Check sync settings so all social media apps. Even if to don't use Google Walker go in and set it up, I read that it does eat up battery. Or if you don't plan on using Google wallet just remove it

My battery didn't really start improving until I started thinking about data and syncing. I am using AOKP ROM and its power save option. When my screen turns off, my data turns off. I have not had any issues or delays and my battery has been fantastic. If you don't want to change ROMS (I am fiercely loyal to mine) then the Green Power app will do the same thing. I also have changed all widgets and gmail to update every 4 hours. SG-NS4G kernel has been great for battery. Hope this gives you a starting point. Having to worry about your battery sux.

Also as previously stated change your CPU settings I am set to 100/800 but even 100/1000 would be easier on your power consumption. I have not suffered any significant performance losses with daily use.

Numerous kernel and rom developers state the opposite - overclocking can conserve battery by the race to idle theory. Check the kernel benchmark thread for data.
I myself used to underclock and undervolt, but I've experienced fantastic results running Steve Garon's 1.14 kernel at 100/1100mhz with the interactive governor and standard voltage (although this kernel is pre-configured with a 900mV floor).
AOKP Milestone 2, Steve Garon 1.14 kernel at the settings described above resulted in a best of 50hrs with nearly 4hrs of screen on time.
My average is 25-30hrs with 4-5hrs of screen time, with the stock 1440mah battery.

Facebook, Twitter, Path, Tumblr..(I had atleast 10 hours with heavy use) I'm trying to understand why as to all these social networking apps have a huge issue with Android.. Is this just strickly developer of the social networking app's issue?
Thanks guys i think my problem was that my battery hasn't been calibrated after flashing new ROM . Once calibrated and fully discharged then fully charged seems to be alright. I left my phone all night unplugged with wifi on screen turned off and only lost about 2% .

Are you using any power saving apps or settings or no? I think that my biggest problem may be that I have weak signal and weak Wifi signal at home. At work, both are strong so my phone does better at work. And at night my phone is in my bedroom which is the worst place for bother 2G/3G signal and Wifi.
All that said though I think that I will give this ROM/kernel combination a try later today. Does codename have gapps built in or not?

Im coming from a 14day trial period with the evo 4g lte to the S3 and love both phones. they are both great. I like the S3 as a phone just a little bit better but I miss my evo 4g lte purely because I got twice as good battery life then my s3. How is it the evo dominates the s3 in this regaurd. Both devices are/were rooted with good battery saving roms. I can get a full day of medium/light usage without charging the s3. But I could get 2 days easily with medium to light usage. What gives?

You are confused.
First of all, your screenshot is useless - you don't show the actual graph, screen on time, nor voice calls.
Second of all, I own both phones at the same time. SGS3 is somewhat better at battery life than evo lte. Either 1) your sgs3 battery is defective, or 2) you haven't used sgs3 enough to allow calibration of voltage to battery capacity, or 3) your signal strength is not the same as with evo lte - lower signal strength = more battery consumption.
With light usage I got over 14 hours of battery usage and 90% battery strength left. With the bad signal reception at times I get 14 hours and 65%, which tells me it also depends on reception. Now let me just say that bar fro bar -dbm for -dbm my SG III is on par with my Photon in weak signal and strong signal reception every where that I have been. I still have my Photon comparing signal strenth bars, and -dbm for signal reception, and hands down they are very close -dbm and signal wise. I usually dont see more than 2-3 difference in -dbm.
I returned the evo lte for the s3 days ago and I couldn't be happier. I was getting great battery life with the evo but then I realized that it was because I didn't like the phone and all I did was make phone calls and send texts. The S3 is doing great for me considering that I don't put it down for more than a few minutes

An airave will definately help. You'll have full bars in your place (only annoyance is it will drop your call if you leave the house when your phone drops off the airave). Might want to make sure you limit the connections if you live in an apartment though, otherwise everyone else with a sprint phone will connect to your airave.
I wonder if using wifi calling, which I believe shuts down the cell radio, would save power? Also, who is using power saving regularly?

Actually anyone can do wifi calling if they have a Google voice number. It's just that T-Mobile has it built in and doesn't require Google voice. An app named Groove IP is great for this. However I don't think it would make much of a difference in battery life over a regular call.
keep in mind guys, the forums are combined. GSM users are almost always going to have better battery life than their cdma counterparts.
Yeah but you cant swap in backup batteries on the eve lte . backup battery usage negates all battery usage issues.

Battery life is terrible.
I refuse to do what my friend does:
Turn vibrate off
Turn screen brightness to lowest
Phone is always connected to Edge - unless he's using the Internet - then he switches back to Edge
Syncs his email every 15 minutes (pull not push!!!)
Always 'freeing ram' and exiting apps
His life sucks.
I am the opposite. Full brightness, 4g , push mail for my 4 emails, exchange server (email and calendar) for work and so on.
I manage this by always having a spare battery that I charge with my battery charger dock lol.
Will be doing the same thing once I can get one for my S4
I know, so far it's been below expectations for me too - I ordered a portable energy bank from Amazon this morning, and I guess I'll just carry it around with me from now on.. What a shame - the phone is extremely powerful too..
Install gsam battery monitor and let it monitor your phone and see what is causing wake locks. Also let the battery go through 3-4 battery cycles before you start comparing battery life.
That'd weird. Isn't the 9500 or the 9505?
My battery exceeds my expectations by quite a lot. Best battery I've had on a smartphone so far, and I've had a few.

I get similar battery life as well. Sometimes 4 ton6 hours screen times
16 hour days
I found my battery life improved when I got rid of a poor quality 32gig media card and used another spare old16gig one.
I also dumped corrupted mp3 files and videos and got new ones.
I think poor sd card quality and bad mp3 files are partially responsible for lower battery life.

just got mine
first charge cycle
4 hours on screen
total 8 hours
15% left
not very good but i think it will get better

So far with battery saving on it seems that nothing changed... Will test it further with daily use. But battery life here, even before using the app was not bad by any means.

Yep. I'm really impressed with this phone s battery life, not too far from the note 2 battery life but not quite there.

I just updated my HTC One yesterday and the battery drain is ridiculous. I took my phone off the charger at 6am today and watched some of a film listened to a bit of music and sent texts as usual and phone went dead at 2pm !
Usually it would last till 6pm with heavy usage but since the update the battery life has deteriorated.
My phone is less than a week old and overall really impressed with it till now.
Anyone else having this issue and can suggest a fix?

You may need to give it a few days and a couple of battery cycles to settle itself down again. Try installing Greenify to 'hibernate' running services in the background and BetterBatteryStats to monitor kernel wakelocks and what's using your battery in general..

I am not rooted at present. I see no need with the new phones coming out.
Hopefully the next cycle will improve as at present I can see the battery percentage decrease far to quickly.

Have you turned auto-sync on and for all apps that are listed?
I noticed an extremely improvement in battery consumption when deactivating sync for few apps.

Dude, might as well switch it off...
Battery drain is definitely higher after the update. Frankly not a great update at all...

For me the 4.2.2 update has improved my battery life.
Everything completely stock, get about 35-40 hours battery life (100% to ~1%) with 2 to 4 hours on screen time. Obviously depending on what you do with that screen on, will dictate just how much battery life you use. But for me, usually browsing, reading, watching YouTube. Dont really game or do anything massively intensive.
Also everything on stock normal, (locations, gps, auto sync, blinkfeed, etc).
As I said depending on what you do with your phone, your battery life with on screen time will increase/decrease. Also whether you use it as a smartphone (all sync etc on) or reduce it to a phone (2g, power saver, screen dimmed, etc) makes a huge difference.

I'm working in dark rooms so why keeping display brightness not at minimum? And on most places I only got 2G network, so why not forcing the phone to only use this?
And sync... Yeah... I don't need the weather to be updated every hour... Or news... They're appearing on my BlinkFeed anyways...
And I'm using my phone as a smartphone as well Over 6 hours screen on time is mostly Facebook, WhatsApp and browsing.

I though we moved on from doing all this crap.
Why can't android manage battery like windows does or even better htc work with Google and sort the issue.
All I know is before this update I had ok battery life now I have extremely poor life. I would suggest it's the update.

100% agree with you..now the phone charges quicker but it discharges quicker too.. yes i did hard reset, autosync etc etc.. no change of my usage patterns, i now get half the usage..
dont know why htc just didnt go straight to 4.3 as this significantly improves battery life..4.2 acrosss the board was a bad update.
Anyone tried the Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru app?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xiam.snapdragon.app
Had the same issue after official ota. Tried a hard reset but didn't work. Then I unlocked bootliader and switched to maximus 10 Rom and I'm back in the game!

Hi everyone,
I have a Note 4 (SM-N910F) running android 5.1.1 (build LMY47X.N910FXXU1COH4) for about 1 year and a half now and i'm so surprised of how the performance have decreased, plus i have some weird things happening every now and then such as :

Having no internet connection, but i'm on wi-fi. This doesn't come from the network i'm using because it happens even when i'm connected to a different one.
My battery life is really ****ty... Plus when i'm around 30%, my phone shuts down and when i turn it back on again, i'm like at 1%.
I'm not root.
I really don't know what to do. Is there any information i can give you that will give you tips on things i'm maybe doing wrong causing my phone to have weird behavior ?
The thing i want to know is if flashing a new rom was a good idea, and maybe if you have advices to give me on roms.. I'd like to be as up to date as possible, and a light rom. Doesn't care about touchwiz feature. I just want my phone to be reactive, fast, and working normally.
Thanks for your answers.
Change your battery. Some posters claim to have lag when their battery are nearly dying as well.

Do you update regularly (Apps & OTA update)?
Try to turn off WiFi & then turn it on again.
As for battery....it's degraded to only 70% of its full capacity.
Usually when it reaches around 40% your phone will stutter + lagging heavily, so make sure to charge at around 50% if you are still considering to use that "broken" battery.
My Advice is to buy a new OEM battery or any good 3rd party battery.
It is a little similar with my 2014 Note 10.1. It also shuts down on its own at right arount 33%. But only sometimes. And yes, it also stutters. I can not vouch for other branded devices. But, I have heard similar stories from friends on their Samsung devices. Definitely get a new battery. Like another post staited. OEM is a great choice. Or, at least a very reputable 3rd party. I purchased a battery for my Note 10. And even though it was new, it was not the same. I found that the circuitry in the cheap aftermarket battery was sub par. The seller sent me a free replacement battery. And it also had issues. So, make sure you get a reputable battery.

Batteries aren't linear though. Its voltage drops off in a curve. (e.g. 4.2v = 100%, 4.1v = 90% and 3.7v = 20%)
Same problem on my 10 months old Note 4 N910C. And it was started about 2-3 months ago, so the battery lasted about 6 months!? Also, there's a burned-in damage on my screen (notification bar)! Yes, warranty is still valid, but anyway... NEVER AGAIN Samsung phone!

You also need to look at your signal - it is awful and you have some wicked wake lock issues that need to be addressed.

Hm... You right about signal. I never looked at this, because whenever I use the phone (at home) and I'm always on 4G internet (unlimited plan), signal meter is on 1-2 bars.I don't know why is signal so bad, when phone is off. Power saving is always ON. About wake locks... I believe that they are from my smart watch (bluetooth),but Bluetooth version on Note4 should be low-power (connection is lost when I'm 4 meters away (in my department)), so... This days I can't reach 2h of SOT (4h-5h when it was new).

Interesting. I'm curious about the power saving if that actually reduces your signal by keeping it in a lower power state. I have never used power saving mode and my rom doesn't recommend it. I wonder if running in normal mode would effect it.
Might look at what apps are using the bulk of your battery as well to see if something rogue is running.

Before Note my phone was Sony Xperia Z and power saving on that phone did a great job. That's why I still use this feature. I also put many apps into the "optimizing mode"... There's no any special app which uses battery. There was Facebook, but I uninstall it.Battery monitoring apps are useless for me because phone is not rooted (still under warranty). Maybe I should try hard reset.

I know it's old thread, but anyway... Last week I finally take my phone to the service, because it's still under warranty. They changed the screen because it was burned-in, they changed the battery (sudden power-offs) and strangely - they changed some faulty system connector. Phone worked and charge befor the repair. I always use only original charger, so how can be some system connector burned??? They changed it for free under warranty, so I assume that it must be some factory fault. I know few people with the same "sudden power-off" problem on different Samsung phones, so...
