Battery lifr - Nexus S General

Hi understand should post in dev section unfortunately haven't got enough posts.
Hi all. Just wonder why my battery life is not that great as a lot of ppl claiming. I m using latest codename with latest matr1x cna kernel cpu is set min 100 max 1200 and ondemand governor. Yesterday my battery only last me about 10hrs where i had made about 10 phonecalls send/read 5-10 emails browse xda forum and read bit if news.any ideas?

Well even with your slight over click that is contributing to lower battery life, get rid of some used apps. Check sync settings so all social media apps. Even if to don't use Google Walker go in and set it up, I read that it does eat up battery. Or if you don't plan on using Google wallet just remove it

My battery didn't really start improving until I started thinking about data and syncing. I am using AOKP ROM and its power save option. When my screen turns off, my data turns off. I have not had any issues or delays and my battery has been fantastic. If you don't want to change ROMS (I am fiercely loyal to mine) then the Green Power app will do the same thing. I also have changed all widgets and gmail to update every 4 hours. SG-NS4G kernel has been great for battery. Hope this gives you a starting point. Having to worry about your battery sux.

Also as previously stated change your CPU settings I am set to 100/800 but even 100/1000 would be easier on your power consumption. I have not suffered any significant performance losses with daily use.

Numerous kernel and rom developers state the opposite - overclocking can conserve battery by the race to idle theory. Check the kernel benchmark thread for data.
I myself used to underclock and undervolt, but I've experienced fantastic results running Steve Garon's 1.14 kernel at 100/1100mhz with the interactive governor and standard voltage (although this kernel is pre-configured with a 900mV floor).
AOKP Milestone 2, Steve Garon 1.14 kernel at the settings described above resulted in a best of 50hrs with nearly 4hrs of screen on time.
My average is 25-30hrs with 4-5hrs of screen time, with the stock 1440mah battery.

When I had an iPhone 4, My battery life was amazing with all social networking apps.. Facebook, Twitter, Path, Tumblr..(I had atleast 10 hours with heavy use) I'm trying to understand why as to all these social networking apps have a huge issue with Android.. Is this just strickly developer of the social networking app's issue?

Thanks guys i think my problem was that my battery hasn't been calibrated after flashing new ROM . Once calibrated and fully discharged then fully charged seems to be alright. I left my phone all night unplugged with wifi on screen turned off and only lost about 2% .

Which combination of ROM/Kernel/settings are you using to get those results.

Hey, could I please get an answer to this question.

I am using cna 1.4.0 with matr1x cna kernel CPU overclooked min 100 Max 1200 and ondemand governor.very nice rom

Are you using any power saving apps or settings or no? I think that my biggest problem may be that I have weak signal and weak Wifi signal at home. At work, both are strong so my phone does better at work. And at night my phone is in my bedroom which is the worst place for bother 2G/3G signal and Wifi.
All that said though I think that I will give this ROM/kernel combination a try later today. Does codename have gapps built in or not?

I'm running the same combo he is, except I am using smartassV2. I would highly recommend this rom/kernel.
And no, in 1.4 gapps aren't included

I dont use any power saving apps matr1x kernel has deep idle I think this saves lot of battery. If doesn't help u might have turn 3g off for the night.

Well I've been using Juice Defender for half a year on two different phones. How much battery it can save you is debatable. So long as you don't have excessive SNS polling and partial wake data usage problems of some sort, it's not going to net you much of anything.
I was an ardent user of this app, but the last week running without it at all (running Bionix Final JI2 modem) compared to the first couple of days running this firmware I can say with confidence it's not needed for me any longer. I'd even go so far as to say I've been a victim of ye olde placebo effect.
If you don't have the pro version the automatic defaults are about as good as it gets. Best of luck.
Personally I had worse battery life with JD, I would stay away from it.
Sent from my Vibrant running Eugene's Froyo using XDA App
Get Tasker instead. It can do anything JD does and WAY more. JD worked for me, but it caused the stock ROM to run a but sluggish.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The main thing the JD does it seems, at least by default settings, are two things. First, by default it disables your APN connection (3G/2G) when battery falls below 15%. I've disabled this, I keep an eye on my battery anyway. The other thing by default is by far the better of the two. By default, it turns on your APN connection for 1 minute once every 15 minutes for a duration of 1 minute. By default, that's all this app really does, and it doesn't need to ping the CPU as it sits between 0.0% and 0.1% CPU utilization as reported by Watchdog.
I'm not advocating the use of this app nor am I claiming this will even save battery life, but given the knowledge of what its default settings do, I'm of the belief that having your APN turned off for a substantial part of the day will increase battery life between charges.
For completely non-technical users, JD is the way to go. However, with just a teeny more effort you can do WAY more than JD is capable of doing. Stock firmware with JD I could get up to about 14 hours of battery life. This is doing a bunch of texts, reading gmail, and getting Exchange mail via touchdown. With Bionix Fusion, J12 modem, not using JD, and keeping the phone in 2G and not 3G I can get significant battery life as the image below shows.
At the time this shot was taken, I was down to 15% battery and 4 hours according to Juice Plotter.

I been using with the Bionix 'core' kernal and it's giving me decent battery as opposed to no defender where battery life was not good at all. seems to work as advertised, i charged my phone 4 hours ago and it's at 100% (but didn't use for any calls yet) . Otherwise it would be at 92% or so without JD. Mileage will vary
Well, I think people are ascribing too much mysticism into what JD is really doing. With its default installation left intact, it simply shuts your 3G (APN) radio off when the phone becomes relocked (screen off), just as your wifi connection shuts down when the screen turns off. While the phone is locked, JD turns the 3G radio back on for a minute once every 15 minutes. That's it. There's really no magic. So, if you think having your 3G radio turned off automatically every time you shut the screen off sounds like it might save your battery, then it probably will.

I use JD and not noticed alot and an app that should be used is superdim to dim your screen backlight even more than settings let you and also found i had few apps that are using more power than my screen so its all about apps installed and way there all configured so Milage may vary by hours between phones so unless your phone is set up exact same way as another device thats the same dont expect all to be 1 day battery + is battery life really all that confusing

Show us your battery life!

It seems as though battery life is one of the most common topics among us vibrant owners. We are always looking to increase battery life, whether it be with a new rom, new kernels, or apps from the market. I wanted to start this thread for everyone to share their experiences, tricks of the trade, etc on getting the best battery life.
Post pictures, rom info, kernel info, app info, modem info, battery info etc! No pic, no proof!!!
This is the best I have been able to get with my phone with:
Bionix 1.3.1 - Stock kernel - KB1 modem - TW launcher - auto brightness off, set about 2 clicks from the left - battery calibration app used at 100% - Stock battery. Light / Light moderate usage, phone calls, texts, web searches. GPS on.

Well, this is great battery life you got there For me 24h is the most I can squeeze from my Vibrant with Project V/Bullet 1.42 kernel, auto brightness off, moderate usage. 16h with heavy usage... It's fully charged now so I don't have pics to show it
i used around 5% with in an hour with somewhat heavy usage this is cm7 nightly 71 bali with uv
srdjav - have you tried bali uv? I heard it works really well, especially with bi-winning, but I have heard great things about it on all different types of roms
gamikzone - impressive for cm7, I have read horror stories that the battery life on it wasn't all that great...but I guess with the kernel script and bali, it's way better!
@corpsetomb
Yes, I did tried Bali... But honestly, didn't see much difference in battery life. I have tried 4 different kernel on Project V and battery life was always 16-24h, depends of the usage. With extremely heavy usage 16h... So i decided to stay with Bullet 1.42.
But I didn't try Bi-Winning ROM yet... Maybe I will give it a try
But I had very bad experience with Super_DragonMODz 1.5 kernel... For a few hours everything was ok. But in one moment I picked up a phone after doing nothing for a half an hour and it was HOT! And I could smell "burning" inside Luckily when I took battery out and let the phone cool down, it was ok

haha what is this, a courtroom?
truly, none of this matters. one big factor in battery life is application use. in order to pinpoint someones battery usage, one would have to list, in detail, their application usage. which/how many apps poll for background data/how often? is the person using an autokiller/ram optimizer? which/how many apps stay open in the background, even when killed?
The bottom line is, battery life is ultimately determined by the user. there are only so many differences, in terms of battery, between these roms and kernels. none of them will give you a SIGNIFICANT difference. this is not the fault of the devs, they are not magicians.
This is why people do not get nice responses in rom/kernel threads when they ask "how is the battery life?". Then some clown who is a very light user will say "its great! i get 20hrs per cycle!!" and then you flash it expecting ground-shaking results...only you forgot that you have 317 apps on your phone (20 of which are constantly poll/checking for background data), and you use your phone/data like a whore who youll never see again. and unfortunately, there are horrible noobs out in there who, after doing this, will actually go back into the thread and say something like "DO NOT FLASH, MY BATTERY DOESNT EVEN LAST 8 HRS!!!!"
Theres only one true way to REALLY compare battery between ROMs/kernels (and it still isnt 100%trustworthy): download a ROM, try it out for a few days at moderate usage. Then flash the one you want to compare it to. Make sure you have the SAME exact setup as the ROM before (apps, brightness, GPS on/off, background data, etc.), and try to mimmick your usage with the other one. NOW you can effectively determine, relatively, which ROM may show better battery results for everybody. and then, when someone asks "does this have good battery?" you dont just say yes; you say "yes, i have seen noticeable improvement since coming from _______ rom, i about ___hrs more per full charge "
sorry for the rant

No worries, I welcome your input! I agree that a big factor in battery life is application use. You will see in the OP that I recommended people put in as much detail as possible along with their picture, such as what type of use, kernel, rom, etc. I would also like to hear and see comparisons between roms, that is part of what this thread is all about! To be able to compare different roms and see what helps based on usage.
Thank you for participating and your input!

You can manipulate the battery use stats pretty easily... at least on CM7. If I plug my phone in to charge for an hour, it doesn't reset my battery usage. Sometimes when I look at it it will say 24 hours+. Which I know is not at all accurate.

Post your battery life results & which Governor/Scheduler combo you recommend

Happy New Year first to all.
Now what i would like to do with this thread is create a place were people can discuss about battery life and post screenshots of their battery life. Also talk about what settings you are using and what is your overall experience and what is the best screen on time you had so far.
What i like people to talk about is what kernel they use, what governor, if you are using a scheduler and if you are using any scripts to improve performance or smoothness when scrolling through screens. Also if people can provide there tricks and tips on how they get the best out of their battery might be beneficial for new users who just got their handset and looking for ways on how to get that extra juice from their battery
Over the last week i have been using Siyah kernel and i have to admit in the beginning i thought not much of the kernel. But after reading and learning regarding the Thunderbolt scripts (by Pikachu) and also that i could use the lulzactive app(by Tegrak) i was blown away by the smoothness and performance. Now if you are using scripts the app is not needed as far as i know(please someone correct me if i am wrong) but either how being able to use different apps or scripts to improve my phone even more it has left me speechless.
My average screen on time is about 4hrs and 30 minutes. That is over the duration of one day and a half. Before i used to use Savaged Zen governor and use to UnderVolt quite alot. But now after turning to Siyah kernel and trying out the lulzactive governor i am also again amazed by the battery performance.
Now different governors and different schedulers are dependent on what use you need them for. That i will not go into as there are other threads that explain all that in more detail. Please see here for more information:[REF][&Tweaks] Kernel Governors, Modules, I/O Schedulers & CPU Tweaks: Siyah & Others
My idea behind this thread is to keep in one place everything. Regarding settings, what scripts you use, what app you guys prefer either if it is Voltage Control, No Frills or SetCpu or if you recommend any other ones and what scripts are best to use if you do not like to use an app to control all your frequencies. What kernel you guys prefer and which one gives you best performance, or best battery life or even which one you guys has the best of both worlds. That is my aim for this thread..
Not to have wars in which one is best or not. Just a discussion on how people can improve or learn even on how to use scripts or how to get the most out of their battery and improve performance as well. Yes again i will say there are loads of threads but if you have one were each member can provide their experience someone might benefit from all this.
And as a pointer yes i know let's say my settings that i use might not work for someone else. But if we can give pointers and examples to others on how to start and they can use my one as a template say on how to improve their ones then why not i say.
Anyway guys i know for some they might not like this thread and for some they might say it is not worth the hassle. But if you can give ideas on how to improve the thread and please first see my idea and logic were i want to go with this then please feel free to input and give me your opinions in improving it.
Thank you to all and have a very Happy New Year.
Credits to all the devs and specially the creators of all the kernels out there who make my phone into the beast it is now. Respect to all XDA members and this is one community worth being a member off.

As you can see for me it is pretty amazing and the results are brilliant. Now on Siyah 2.6.4 and Thunderbolt scripts 2.3.3.
Also using Voltage Control and undervolting and using scheduler SIO and governor Lulzactive for now. Testing the new kernel and same governor with updated scripts to see how battery goes. I shall post different screenshots for different governors in due course.
Cheers

You can set that up when you go into settings - wifi and network and then wifi settings press menu button click on advanced and there you will find sleep policy and try switching it to when screen is off for wifi to sleep come out and reboot

Give Siyah a go and use Voltage Control to control the cpu clock and try and undervolt a bit. Use Lulzactive governor and see how you go. Also try SIO scheduler...Let me know how you get on

I should also mention that I'm using the Samsung 2000mah extended battery. CPU has been oc'ed, uv'ed and set to 500Mhz-1600Mhz "On Demand"

Can not help you then buddy. The only thing i would suggest is try and make wifi to go off when screen is off. You can set that up when you go into settings - wifi and network and then wifi settings press menu button click on advanced and there you will find sleep policy and try switching it to when screen is off for wifi to sleep come out and reboot

You do realize that generally this will use more battery than staying constantly connected to wifi.
3G uses more battery than wifi.
If you think about it, the cell tower is pretty far away compared to your router.

Steve. Why would it eat more battery? I mean screen is off but having wifi on will keep your phone awake. A thing that is not really needed and would eat more battery.

Having wifi on will not keep your phone awake
Because if you have a constant connection to your router that is 5 foot away your using less battery than it constantly polling to the data tower which is prob a few miles away.
If your out and about turn wifi off as the constant searching will decrease battery.
There is a fair bit of info on the web about this, i'm afraid i haven't the time to find it out now, have a search tho.
there one example

[Q] 20+ hours of battery?

I'm a bit new to flashing roms and I'm still learning. I've searched about this a lot but I keep seeing different answers so I thought I would just ask for myself.
I see many people getting great battery life and here I'm stuck getting about 5 hours of use. My battery is new so I know that's not the problem.
The first thing that came to mind was battery calibration so I'm thinking I'm doing it wrong.
How are you guys calibrating you batteries?
Another thing I've been seeing is v6 supercharger. Does this improve battery or just speeds up your phone? How do I use it? Will it work with any room I flash?
Thanks in advance for the help

Battery calibration doesn't actually make a difference. I used to swear by it. The procedure is to charge to 100%, wipe battery stats, drain to shutdown, charge to 100% without interruption. All the battery stats file does is keep battery usage information between reboots for the battery usage chart.
When you flash a ROM, make sure you're at 100%, then use the hell out of your battery and you'll be fine.
Also, don't worry about how long the battery lasts off charger. Worry about screen on time. Anything over 4 hours is fine.
What is your current configuration?
V6 does work on any ROM, but it really doesn't seem necessary for this phone. We have so much RAM it's kind of silly. Many swear by it. As far as how to use it, go to the release thread on XDA and follow the instructions. Google is your friend.

I always keep my screen at 30% brightness sometimes 50. Wifi is always on when I can get it otherwise data which is about 25% of the time. sync is always on and I use weather bug which syncs every hour. as for v6, I like my phone current speed so I don't care to have it. I just thought it also helped with Batt.

Are you talking 5 hours of ACTIVE phone usage? That's not bad and I would say in line with what I get. If you're talking standby time, that's unusually awful. I usually make it 15+ hours on a single charge with low/moderate use during the day at work.
Any ICS ROM will instantly boost your battery.
Check out your battery usage stats for what is draining it. Mine typically is the screen.
Try something like Juice Defender, which turns off your radios when not in use.

I'm running the dark unicorn v.1 with frosted cherry. As for use, I would say moderate. Not always on standby though. I don't really know much about governor and all that so I don't mess with it. I just install whatever the default is on the ROM
now that you guys are telling me all this, it sound about normal. I guess when people talk about getting a day and a half of battery are those who hardly use it

Next time your battery is about to go kaput, check your battery usage and click on screen usage. It will show you how long your screen was on. If you're above 4 hours, you're golden. Best I've ever gotten was 5h and a few minutes.
If you can under volt, do that that's where I've gotten most of my battery life.

I don't notice any battery difference with v6, but I do notice apps opening/running faster than before it, and less random fc of apps. For dark unicorn ROM, to make it stick after a reboot, you'll need to set the script that is saved in data/ to run with super user permission (su) and at boot from script manager, a well as alter services.jar (see post from Coryyy) back in the dark unicorn thread.

[Improve Battery Performance] LATEST XXELLA SGS3 JB ROM STOCK. BBS Stats plzz

Hi all as we all know there has been plenty of discussion regarding SGS3 battery life. I class myself as a heavy user and was pulling my hair out with my battery needing to be charged by EARLY afternoion...
I tried reinstalling and doing full whipes did nt change my battery life so after extensive reading and tweaking this is what i have done and it has really improved my battery to the point that the afternoon charge is no longer and i can now get up to 13 hours without charge
Im rooted XXXKLC JB Sammy Rom 4.1.2
Now tested on XXELL4 Sammy 4.1.2 stock rooted and works great still
☆☆ Currently testing XXELLA ROM ☆☆
You may not need to use all these tips at once. You may find that one or two may give you the desired result it is really up to the individual.
***It is highly recommended that you read all instructions if using pimp my rom. Also prior to pimping flash the rescue package within the application. AND always do a nandroid back up just in case*******

13 hours of screen time?
Could you specified more before after difference of your battery life and usage? I really like to try these steps, thx.
Single biggest improvement in battery life is turning my mobile data off when I won't be using my phone, such as when I'm at work. I used to finish work at lunchtime with 50% battery left, now it's more like 70-80%.
Maybe I'm missing something with Android, but I can't see why there isn't a setting in mobile data to only have it activated when screen is on, just like wifi. This is essentially what juice defender does (I know it has plenty more options), but it should be built in already, imho.

Well actually the best setting is to keep data on always otherwise it will defeat the purpose of having a smartphone.
But keep wifi off when screen is off.
If you turn off wifi and data when screen off then why do you even need to keep data on in the first place. Because when you turn on your screen wifi will be on and available and so don't need data.

I tried the ultimate or pro version. It was good for a while but then I rooted and flashed a few roms.
I then uninstalled it and tried to compare the difference and I concluded it wasn't saving much battery.
To each his own.

I agree the mobile data eats battery.
Try go into setting > more settings > mobile networks > network mode - try using only GSM when you dont need fast internet (for me this allows EDGE data connectivity) instead of auto because I think the phone will automatically try find 3G connectivity. When you need faster internet (for youtube) then you go to auto mode or WCDMA only.
This itself has proven to save a bit of battery.
