Post your battery life results & which Governor/Scheduler combo you recommend - Galaxy S II General

Happy New Year first to all.
Now what i would like to do with this thread is create a place were people can discuss about battery life and post screenshots of their battery life. Also talk about what settings you are using and what is your overall experience and what is the best screen on time you had so far.
What i like people to talk about is what kernel they use, what governor, if you are using a scheduler and if you are using any scripts to improve performance or smoothness when scrolling through screens. Also if people can provide there tricks and tips on how they get the best out of their battery might be beneficial for new users who just got their handset and looking for ways on how to get that extra juice from their battery
Over the last week i have been using Siyah kernel and i have to admit in the beginning i thought not much of the kernel. But after reading and learning regarding the Thunderbolt scripts (by Pikachu) and also that i could use the lulzactive app(by Tegrak) i was blown away by the smoothness and performance. Now if you are using scripts the app is not needed as far as i know(please someone correct me if i am wrong) but either how being able to use different apps or scripts to improve my phone even more it has left me speechless.
My average screen on time is about 4hrs and 30 minutes. That is over the duration of one day and a half. Before i used to use Savaged Zen governor and use to UnderVolt quite alot. But now after turning to Siyah kernel and trying out the lulzactive governor i am also again amazed by the battery performance.
Now different governors and different schedulers are dependent on what use you need them for. That i will not go into as there are other threads that explain all that in more detail. Please see here for more information:[REF][&Tweaks] Kernel Governors, Modules, I/O Schedulers & CPU Tweaks: Siyah & Others
My idea behind this thread is to keep in one place everything. Regarding settings, what scripts you use, what app you guys prefer either if it is Voltage Control, No Frills or SetCpu or if you recommend any other ones and what scripts are best to use if you do not like to use an app to control all your frequencies. What kernel you guys prefer and which one gives you best performance, or best battery life or even which one you guys has the best of both worlds. That is my aim for this thread..
Not to have wars in which one is best or not. Just a discussion on how people can improve or learn even on how to use scripts or how to get the most out of their battery and improve performance as well. Yes again i will say there are loads of threads but if you have one were each member can provide their experience someone might benefit from all this.
And as a pointer yes i know let's say my settings that i use might not work for someone else. But if we can give pointers and examples to others on how to start and they can use my one as a template say on how to improve their ones then why not i say.
Anyway guys i know for some they might not like this thread and for some they might say it is not worth the hassle. But if you can give ideas on how to improve the thread and please first see my idea and logic were i want to go with this then please feel free to input and give me your opinions in improving it.
Thank you to all and have a very Happy New Year.
Credits to all the devs and specially the creators of all the kernels out there who make my phone into the beast it is now. Respect to all XDA members and this is one community worth being a member off.

Above you have screenshots of my battery life using Siyah kernel 2.6.3 and Thunderbolt Scripts 2.3.2
As you can see for me it is pretty amazing and the results are brilliant. Now on Siyah 2.6.4 and Thunderbolt scripts 2.3.3.
Also using Voltage Control and undervolting and using scheduler SIO and governor Lulzactive for now. Testing the new kernel and same governor with updated scripts to see how battery goes. I shall post different screenshots for different governors in due course.
Cheers

I will be keeping a close eye on this thread thanks!

install BBS and find out what keeps your phone awake and causes the battery drain and then try and unistall it.

Tried and failed. No luck.... Can't find the culprit. Keeping wifi on did drain more battery but it was not the only culprit.

Can not help you then buddy. The only thing i would suggest is try and make wifi to go off when screen is off. You can set that up when you go into settings - wifi and network and then wifi settings press menu button click on advanced and there you will find sleep policy and try switching it to when screen is off for wifi to sleep come out and reboot

Believe me I've tried everything I've tested every ROM and kernel combo and I even purchased juice defender ULTIMATE (all radio off when screen is off) but couldn't get rid of the Android bug. Hope ics built will fix it. I have learnt to live with poorer battery life.

You do realize that generally this will use more battery than staying constantly connected to wifi.
3G uses more battery than wifi.
If you think about it, the cell tower is pretty far away compared to your router.

Steve. Why would it eat more battery? I mean screen is off but having wifi on will keep your phone awake. A thing that is not really needed and would eat more battery.

Having wifi on will not keep your phone awake
Because if you have a constant connection to your router that is 5 foot away your using less battery than it constantly polling to the data tower which is prob a few miles away.
If your out and about turn wifi off as the constant searching will decrease battery.
There is a fair bit of info on the web about this, i'm afraid i haven't the time to find it out now, have a search tho.
there one example

exactly so maybe sometimes instead of having 3g best turn it to 2G or Edge to save up bit battery...

[TUT/GUIDE] How to get better battery life

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to help out those people out there who are getting terrible battery life with their G2's. I made this thread because all of the other threads that have a screenshot of someone getting about 14 hours of battery life have just the screenshot and no explanation of how they got this great battery life.
This is after quite a bit of usage (probably about 3 hours of internet browsing and about 1/2 hour of angry birds
Obviously this will only apply to you if you are rooted.
Step 1: Download and flash this kernel.
Step 2: Set SetCPU to this:
NOTE: If you go any farther than 960mhz then the cpu voltage will be raised, causing lower battery life. Everything below and including 960Mhz is the exact same voltage with this kernel so you won't get any improvement by lowing the cpu freq.
Step 3: Disable profiles. ALL profiles.
^_^
Other Tips and Tricks
DON'T USE TASK KILLERS. THEY DON'T WORK.
Hello? Did this help anyone?

Thanks for this link! I'm trying this out as we speak. I was previously running the GODspeed 1.4 Overclock with ok battery life..so i'm curious to see how this works. I'll definately keep you updated!
I always have a "screen off" profile with the frequencies set to 245/500, and I get insane battery life. Went over 14 hours yesterday, and I still have 55% remaining when I plugged in. That was also on the stock CM kernel. I'm trying out the UV kernel right now.

It's only been a few hours that this has been posted (and at least in the States, a Sat. morning). Just give it some time. Also, I think quite a few people are running this kind of set up already (based on the numerous discussions seen in the various rom and and kernel threads anyway), so they probably aren't inclined to reply/vote. Even if they weren't doing this, you probably can't expect any results from people for at least a day or two (unless their battery usage was really bad to begin with, they aren't going to know how much this helps until after the change has been in place for a while).
Just a heads up, Pershoot updated his kernel so that the voltages from 768-960 are now the same as at 979, so you might want to update the guide. Also, just wondering why you recommend the performance governor over on demand if you are looking to improve battery life? Won't the performance governor stay at the higher clock speeds for longer periods of time than on demand? Or did you think this was an acceptable tradeoff (as in things don't run as smoothly for you on on demand and you felt the extra power usage was negligible). Just curious. I had always run on demand or conservative for battery life, but conservative is no longer supported in the Pershoot kernel (and some times led to slight lag in my display turning on).
Also, I'm not positive on this since I don't use Sense roms, but I heard that because Pershoot's kernel was designed to run specifically on AOSP-based roms, it may cause problems with Sense ones. Might want to either put a warning in your guide or verify that this isn't the case.
Ok, I'm following this guide, just flashed the kernel, it took more to backup than to actually install the kernel, on CM6.1.1, will check in tomorrow if I see any improvement, because I used to get only about 6hrs of battery life as I was before.
I always have wifi all day at home since my carrier (Movistar Venezuela) does not have 1900/2100 frequencies.
Thanks for the information. Although it is common.

I'm just reporting what I found. Perhaps the ondemand governer is using more power because its constantly checking the cpu utilization?

Here's some:
Use the stock charger. I believe the stock charger provides power at 5.5V (I'd have to check to know for sure), because that is the voltage the battery was designed for. A lower voltage could mean that your phone *thinks* it's charging at 5.5V and will stop charging when it *thinks* it's at 100%, while in reality it might only be at 80% or less. Higher voltages could wear out the battery faster but provide faster charging times.
Calibrate your battery. Roughly once a month, let your battery completely runs out (after it shuts down again, turn it on again until it's fully out), let it charge while off, and repeat at least once again. This may have a significant effect depending on how you use your phone
Turn off unneeded services while not in use. Having WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, autosync, facebook sync, widgets, etc can harm battery. It is super simple to put toggles in your notification bar with either CM, MIUI, or Enom's roms that it is pretty much a painless way to dramatically improve your battery life. Facebook sync can be a huge waste too if you have it updating automatically, try instead refreshing it manually. Get rid of widgets that "seem" useful, but in reality just take up ram, download useless data, and take up space. I mean, I like to be able to know the temperature or whether I should bring a jacket, but do I really need the news to be right there in my face 24/7? Widgets like that would have to be constantly downloading data to be even be relevant, and IMO it is easier to just open an app. You can leave GPS on though, as the phone only activates it when necessary.
Update your radio to the latest available. This one is just common sense. The radio is basically the driver which your phone uses to connect to the cell tower, so wouldn't it make sense to have the newest, most efficient radio? I use the .02.17 radio and it is definitely better than the radio that came with the phone originally. Use Gfree before you switch because getting s-off with .02.17 is a pain in the butt.
Those are just some of the things I've realized with both my G2 and my G1 before it.

No, task killers don't work at all on Android. Especially so after 2.2.

I'll get out my multimeter later to test this.
However, I don't think that's true. It probably just figures out whether it's on a usb port or ac charger by seeing if there's power on the DATA lines inside the usb cable. iPod Touches and iPhones REQUIRE this power so they recognize it as a usb port, otherwise they WILL NOT charge. This explains why, if I plug in my G2 into a charger designed for an iPhone (same specs, 5V out at 1.0A) it will register as USB to the phone and will charge quite slowly.
Again, this is all going off assumptions. I'll put my thoughts up against my multimeter readings later. ^_^

So yesterday morning I woke up at 9 am and went to ihop, I disconnected my phone from the charger at around 920 at 100% by the time it was 1040 ish I randomly looked at my phone and noticed my battery was at 33%?!?!?!? And I went crazy:O yet when I got home I charged it to around 83% disconnected at 730..then at 12 am when I got home I was barely at 61%?!?! Whatsoever the reason for this?!?!?!

I had this very problem with my G2... it fixed itself like yours did. I think it was probably either skype or qik, as the problem went away after I uninstalled them. You might have had a hung up application running in the background.

I suppose I'm one of those people who had no issues with their battery, but I recommend using a screen off profile for SetCPU. In doing so, I can effectively go almost a full two days on a single charge, but this is with minimal usage. Such as texting and browsing the web for only a few minutes.

Hi understand should post in dev section unfortunately haven't got enough posts.
Hi all. Just wonder why my battery life is not that great as a lot of ppl claiming. I m using latest codename with latest matr1x cna kernel cpu is set min 100 max 1200 and ondemand governor. Yesterday my battery only last me about 10hrs where i had made about 10 phonecalls send/read 5-10 emails browse xda forum and read bit if news.any ideas?

Well even with your slight over click that is contributing to lower battery life, get rid of some used apps. Check sync settings so all social media apps. Even if to don't use Google Walker go in and set it up, I read that it does eat up battery. Or if you don't plan on using Google wallet just remove it

My battery didn't really start improving until I started thinking about data and syncing. I am using AOKP ROM and its power save option. When my screen turns off, my data turns off. I have not had any issues or delays and my battery has been fantastic. If you don't want to change ROMS (I am fiercely loyal to mine) then the Green Power app will do the same thing. I also have changed all widgets and gmail to update every 4 hours. SG-NS4G kernel has been great for battery. Hope this gives you a starting point. Having to worry about your battery sux.

Numerous kernel and rom developers state the opposite - overclocking can conserve battery by the race to idle theory. Check the kernel benchmark thread for data.
I myself used to underclock and undervolt, but I've experienced fantastic results running Steve Garon's 1.14 kernel at 100/1100mhz with the interactive governor and standard voltage (although this kernel is pre-configured with a 900mV floor).
AOKP Milestone 2, Steve Garon 1.14 kernel at the settings described above resulted in a best of 50hrs with nearly 4hrs of screen on time.
My average is 25-30hrs with 4-5hrs of screen time, with the stock 1440mah battery.

Is this just strickly developer of the social networking app's issue?
Thanks guys i think my problem was that my battery hasn't been calibrated after flashing new ROM . Once calibrated and fully discharged then fully charged seems to be alright. I left my phone all night unplugged with wifi on screen turned off and only lost about 2% .

Are you using any power saving apps or settings or no? I think that my biggest problem may be that I have weak signal and weak Wifi signal at home. At work, both are strong so my phone does better at work. And at night my phone is in my bedroom which is the worst place for bother 2G/3G signal and Wifi.
All that said though I think that I will give this ROM/kernel combination a try later today. Does codename have gapps built in or not?

I'm running the same combo he is, except I am using smartassV2. I would highly recommend this rom/kernel.
And no, in 1.4 gapps aren't included

Are you using any power saving apps or settings or no? I think that my biggest problem may be that I have weak signal and weak Wifi signal at home. At work, both are strong so my phone does better at work. And at night my phone is in my bedroom which is the worst place for bother 2G/3G signal and Wifi.
I dont use any power saving apps matr1x kernel has deep idle I think this saves lot of battery. If doesn't help u might have turn 3g off for the night.

Best Battery Life Build for Sense

Well, i personally love sense. But i hate the battery life. If i tune down the CPU, it gets a little choppy with every ROM no matter what its at for sense. But i was wondering, what kernel or tweaks can i do to fix my battery life issue? I run screen brightness at 1/5.
Ive been around here for awhile and usualy just get "lower your cpu" or "change kernels" but no specific life amounts or which ones.. Aparently all the good ones wont work with sense =/

You gunna have to search the forums a little cause I'm on my phone, but if you know how to insert init.d scripts look up kernal tweaks, umm smurf script by its self also works well, I use cfq I/o, I have my CPU freq maxed out on more lionfish, running smart ass v2 peformance tweaks, that gives you amazing peformance when you need it, and dosent take away much battery, and saves battery like crazy, when screen is off, tomorrow ill go on my comp and send you script or link if you'd like

Ok thanks. would love to have better battery life. And im still somewhat new to this. I only know the basics of wiping and flashing and using setcpu and installing kernels =/ so i barely know what alot of these things are like smartass v2 eventhough ive heard it.
Smartass is a governor option when tuning your CPU. It runs the frequency speed in between the two choices you choose 998/384 or whatever your preference may be.
I would suggest flashing the classic rom by tommytomatoe. It gave me the best battery life on a sense ROM. NRGZ sense 3.5 ROM also lasted me awhile. Nothin will compare to Aosp tho since sense is a battery hog. Good luck

Look for Calne's underworld kernel in the same section as your question. It's sbc and overall excellent kernel.

There's a lot of stuff to try for battery life. If you're looking for a miracle answer, you'll not find it. You need to try different kernels, read up on governors and what they do and so on. The link is to a script that has really sped up my EVO and I believe it has helped with battery life.
I was noticing the shots in this thread showing other's battery life but just remember, it's also what you use your phone for. High data games, surfing, Facebook, using GPS type apps will suck any battery dry. I use my phone a lot and am very happy to make it home in the evening to plug it in. Typically it can last 10 - 12 hours with about 5 - 6 hours of use. And I have tryed almost everything out there. Good luck and have a good time reading up on this stuff and trying different things. It's part of the fun of having a phone that allows you to tweak it. (Suck it, iPhone!)

you make very good points. for instance, i generally keep mobile data off because that is a killer. I also rush like crazy when i turn the screen on to get it off as quickly as possible. UV scripts do help
i get max 13 hours on the mikey rom for my evo 4g i guess its ok just has an overall horrible battery life.!
Maybe this is cheating for the purposes of this thread, BUT this guy ripped out all the Sense stuff he could and put in Go Launcher Ex, which would use less battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550526
It would look much like an AOSP ROM, so I dunno if you'd like that or not, but it has the sense stuff behind the scenes (e.g. kernel).
I got good battery life with it, but i didn't benchmark it or anything.

13 hours of screen time?
Could you specified more before after difference of your battery life and usage? I really like to try these steps, thx.
Single biggest improvement in battery life is turning my mobile data off when I won't be using my phone, such as when I'm at work. I used to finish work at lunchtime with 50% battery left, now it's more like 70-80%.
Maybe I'm missing something with Android, but I can't see why there isn't a setting in mobile data to only have it activated when screen is on, just like wifi. This is essentially what juice defender does (I know it has plenty more options), but it should be built in already, imho.

Well actually the best setting is to keep data on always otherwise it will defeat the purpose of having a smartphone.
But keep wifi off when screen is off.
If you turn off wifi and data when screen off then why do you even need to keep data on in the first place. Because when you turn on your screen wifi will be on and available and so don't need data.

I then uninstalled it and tried to compare the difference and I concluded it wasn't saving much battery.

I agree the mobile data eats battery.
Try go into setting > more settings > mobile networks > network mode - try using only GSM when you dont need fast internet (for me this allows EDGE data connectivity) instead of auto because I think the phone will automatically try find 3G connectivity. When you need faster internet (for youtube) then you go to auto mode or WCDMA only.
This itself has proven to save a bit of battery.

[Q] Kernel for battery life.

Hello.
I'm using PA 4.4.4 Final on my Nexus 4 and I need a kernel that has good battery life (3Hrs SOT will be great).
I'm a medium user, not gaming so much, etc.
I just need the kernel to have 3 things:
1.Good battery life.
2.Gamma Control.
3.Sound Control.
Thanks!

first off, these threads are not allowed on xda, period.
secondly, theres is no such thing as a magic pill for you to take for battery life for your phones. kernels do not increase battery life. battery life is determined by how you personally use your device, how you personally set it up, which apps you use, and very much the quality of your data/phone connection. thats it. everything else plays such a minor role in battery that it doesnt matter.

it is like that on every kernel, not just because its my device. again, battery life has everything to do with how you personally use your device, how you personally set it up, what you install into your device, and what apps you use. also, very much so, the signal quality that you receive plays a huge role in battery life as well. this fantasizing that you will install a magic pill(kernel) that will magically make you have amazing battery life, is just that, a fantasy. if it was true, you would have this magic pill ready for every single device. but its not real, so people waste their time constantly looking for it.
Just one link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/kernels-battery-benchmarks-t2449982
I think this is the evidence that different kernels can affect battery life.
For example not every kernel uses mpdecision hotplug driver. For example faux kernel uses Intelliplug and this lets the cores act much different than with mpdecision.
For example when I'm on Intelliplug and drag my statusbar down, only one core goes online at 1512Mhz.
And if I'm on mpdecision and drag my statusbar down, 3 or 4(!!!) cores go online! So this affects the battery.
Even if this is a stupid example

i use trinity kernel, which keeps all 4 cores on at all times. yet i see from 4.5-5.5h sot without ever doing anything to try to get better battery. so that info you wrote means nothing actually(as how many cores are running does not affect battery). you are just caught up in good salemanship by the developer selling you his kernel. and no mpdecision runs on any of my phones, ever.

I don't run into "good salemanship" I chose this kernel because it brings the capability to optimize the color settings and even undervolting and the most important thing is the "Eco-Mode" which completly disables 2 Cores.
So my Nexus 4 is running as a dual-core phone and as you can see on the screenshot on my first post in this thread,I get 8 hours of screen on time! So please, please don't say it doesn't matter how many cores are online.
If would enable all cores, I defenatly won't get 8 hours of screen on time.

so where is the page that shows what apps you used and at what percentage? seems like youre posting fake/artificial battery stats. othewise you would actually show your usage(which you show none). we are not children here, ok some are, but us adults know whats going on in reality, there is no fooling us.

How to hell I should fake the batterystats? and please fuc**** tell me why I should do that?
This day I almost was connected to my wifi (see screenshot) and this is the fact why my batteryusage isn't that high.
Today I was at school and because of that I wasn't connected to WiFi the hole day.
Actually I've 4h 38m SOT and 13% left.
Please don't accuse me to fake something! I forgot the screenshot of the apps-list but if you want, I can try this weekend to get the same SOT!
Best regarts mate
BTW: I'm still teenager but faking such thigs isn't brave and might brings dissapointments to some which would try this IF I WOULD FAKE WHAT I'VE NOT!!!
I'll try to get the same SOT this saturday because I'm at home the hole day and you'll see guys, nothing's faked!
