Show us your battery life! - Vibrant General

It seems as though battery life is one of the most common topics among us vibrant owners. We are always looking to increase battery life, whether it be with a new rom, new kernels, or apps from the market. I wanted to start this thread for everyone to share their experiences, tricks of the trade, etc on getting the best battery life.
Post pictures, rom info, kernel info, app info, modem info, battery info etc! No pic, no proof!!!
This is the best I have been able to get with my phone with:
Bionix 1.3.1 - Stock kernel - KB1 modem - TW launcher - auto brightness off, set about 2 clicks from the left - battery calibration app used at 100% - Stock battery. Light / Light moderate usage, phone calls, texts, web searches. GPS on.

Well, this is great battery life you got there For me 24h is the most I can squeeze from my Vibrant with Project V/Bullet 1.42 kernel, auto brightness off, moderate usage. 16h with heavy usage... It's fully charged now so I don't have pics to show it

i used around 5% with in an hour with somewhat heavy usage this is cm7 nightly 71 bali with uv

srdjav - have you tried bali uv? I heard it works really well, especially with bi-winning, but I have heard great things about it on all different types of roms

gamikzone - impressive for cm7, I have read horror stories that the battery life on it wasn't all that great...but I guess with the kernel script and bali, it's way better!

@corpsetomb
Yes, I did tried Bali... But honestly, didn't see much difference in battery life. I have tried 4 different kernel on Project V and battery life was always 16-24h, depends of the usage. With extremely heavy usage 16h... So i decided to stay with Bullet 1.42.
But I didn't try Bi-Winning ROM yet... Maybe I will give it a try
But I had very bad experience with Super_DragonMODz 1.5 kernel... For a few hours everything was ok. But in one moment I picked up a phone after doing nothing for a half an hour and it was HOT! And I could smell "burning" inside Luckily when I took battery out and let the phone cool down, it was ok

Can we see pictures not words :/

haha what is this, a courtroom?
truly, none of this matters. one big factor in battery life is application use. in order to pinpoint someones battery usage, one would have to list, in detail, their application usage. which/how many apps poll for background data/how often? is the person using an autokiller/ram optimizer? which/how many apps stay open in the background, even when killed?
The bottom line is, battery life is ultimately determined by the user. there are only so many differences, in terms of battery, between these roms and kernels. none of them will give you a SIGNIFICANT difference. this is not the fault of the devs, they are not magicians.
This is why people do not get nice responses in rom/kernel threads when they ask "how is the battery life?". Then some clown who is a very light user will say "its great! i get 20hrs per cycle!!" and then you flash it expecting ground-shaking results...only you forgot that you have 317 apps on your phone (20 of which are constantly poll/checking for background data), and you use your phone/data like a whore who youll never see again. and unfortunately, there are horrible noobs out in there who, after doing this, will actually go back into the thread and say something like "DO NOT FLASH, MY BATTERY DOESNT EVEN LAST 8 HRS!!!!"
Theres only one true way to REALLY compare battery between ROMs/kernels (and it still isnt 100%trustworthy): download a ROM, try it out for a few days at moderate usage. Then flash the one you want to compare it to. Make sure you have the SAME exact setup as the ROM before (apps, brightness, GPS on/off, background data, etc.), and try to mimmick your usage with the other one. NOW you can effectively determine, relatively, which ROM may show better battery results for everybody. and then, when someone asks "does this have good battery?" you dont just say yes; you say "yes, i have seen noticeable improvement since coming from _______ rom, i about ___hrs more per full charge "
sorry for the rant

Come on man, how did you menage this? Do you have any apps install on your phone?

@TopShelf10
No worries, I welcome your input! I agree that a big factor in battery life is application use. You will see in the OP that I recommended people put in as much detail as possible along with their picture, such as what type of use, kernel, rom, etc. I would also like to hear and see comparisons between roms, that is part of what this thread is all about! To be able to compare different roms and see what helps based on usage.
Thank you for participating and your input!
Note: Do you guys think I should start a list of best battery life in the op?

I know this but anyone can say I got 24hrs show me me proof

You can manipulate the battery use stats pretty easily... at least on CM7. If I plug my phone in to charge for an hour, it doesn't reset my battery usage. Sometimes when I look at it it will say 24 hours+. Which I know is not at all accurate.

I thought i was getting good battery life with medium to heavy usage (27 hours) on Cognition 1.15 but that is exceptional, can you tell me your set up as to how you achieved this amount of battery life.
cheers
Tegrak's kernel and underclocked.
Frozen samsung apps. and brightness mostly 0% as i am fairly fine with the lowest brightness it doesn't hurt my eyes.
also one more thing, i am using overclocking upto 1300 as well and you will be surprised most people will tell you to go underclock to save battery but i didn't and i am just happy with 1.3 Ghz blazing speed.
Here's a shot of running.

Also i used camera for recording movie for about 50 minutes in 720P and 50+ photographs as well which is not mentioned in the above post. I will post once again when my battery will reach 1% because when its below 10% it drops really slow and allows me to use it more unlike when its full.
Sit it on a desk and stare at it. The average screen on time is 5 hrs. You can use that in a day or spread it across 3 days.

One more thing, i only recharge battery when its below 5% or mostly under 2% to full turning it off. And ofcourse this only first week of using the phone, hope it will increase a bit more by next week.
[Note: I personally believe plugging in and out of charger makes the phone battery drop faster]

I usually have brightness set to auto, same as you all Samsung apps frozen, am not using Tegrak i don't believe it's compatible with Cognition ROM, are you using Juice Defender Ultimate or other apps, etc, etc, im on setcpu im 200 min - 800 max - on demand and screen off profile - 200 min - 500 max - consertivave - priority 100.

That is the best battery life ive ever seen on XDA for any type of smartphone never mind one like the GS2, did you use the Internet/Wi-Fi/GPS/Bluetooth,etc, much,do you have any widgets on your screen, push e-mail,etc, im amazed your getting that amount of time without using Juice defender or some other similar app.

Bluetooth yes for 10 minutes transfering some files.
Gps yes for around 1 hour (you can see that in pics atleast it shows usage for ndrive there)
wifi yes around 1 hour but its always on mostly (mostly used for market to download and test applications, gmailing and also some browsing)
3g or edge no i didn't use it.
Games yes i played like drag race etc.
widget yes, battery widget and the running app widget and live wallpapers.
Mine, I think there's a little (big) problem :
Considering the first 8 hours were during the night so I didn't touch my phone :
Running on VR2.1, many things push or so (like 15/30mins refresh) [mails, fb, twitter, news, weather, etc], and good modem (KG2) and CF-Root 4.1.
Any idea/advice please ?
A better rom maybe ?
Thanks in avance

The real secret to great battery life is to disable all the data connections and not use the phone. Since most people are pretty active with their phones, threads about stand-by time are pretty meaningless. Actually, with over a dozen battery life threads already running, you could say new battery life thread are pretty meaningless too.

But can some one tell me where it is shown so I can block it if I ever post some screen shots?
I'm on stock K2-CL. I used 3G just a bit today while in a restaurant, wifi is always on, but I normally sit in front of the computer most of the day, or use my tablet at home, so I do very light surfing - mostly while on the can.
I've not installed "app freezers", nor underclocked the processor, nor rooted or removed anything that isn't stock android. Not stopping tasks in the task manager. In the screenshot below, I did play around a bit on Google Earth for 15 min or so, I'm surprised not to see the android market in there because I feel that's what I used most. I use a live wallpaper that's fairly bright (moving clouds).
Brightness on auto - automatic gmail notifications, contact syncs etc.
I'm going to go on a big trip next week, where electricity will sometimes be optional. I do have that Samsung battery case thinggie coming the mail next week - and already have an external battery as well for emergencies, because this phone will die in an hour or two using the gps, or playing games, or doing serious web surfing - or a combination of those things. It runs very hot too if you use it constantly several hours (drove 500 kilometers last week, the phone was very very hot - seemed unhealthy).
If you hold the power button along with the home button it takes a screen shot.
Thought id say to make it easier for ya in future!
thanks a millions
Don't mind the n00b Here.
Found the IMEI number in the status tab of about phone.
Goto remember to keep this out of public photos.

Best Battery Life Build for Sense

Well, i personally love sense. But i hate the battery life. If i tune down the CPU, it gets a little choppy with every ROM no matter what its at for sense. But i was wondering, what kernel or tweaks can i do to fix my battery life issue? I run screen brightness at 1/5.
Ive been around here for awhile and usualy just get "lower your cpu" or "change kernels" but no specific life amounts or which ones.. Aparently all the good ones wont work with sense =/

You gunna have to search the forums a little cause I'm on my phone, but if you know how to insert init.d scripts look up kernal tweaks, umm smurf script by its self also works well, I use cfq I/o, I have my CPU freq maxed out on more lionfish, running smart ass v2 peformance tweaks, that gives you amazing peformance when you need it, and dosent take away much battery, and saves battery like crazy, when screen is off, tomorrow ill go on my comp and send you script or link if you'd like

Ok thanks. would love to have better battery life. And im still somewhat new to this. I only know the basics of wiping and flashing and using setcpu and installing kernels =/ so i barely know what alot of these things are like smartass v2 eventhough ive heard it.
Smartass is a governor option when tuning your CPU. It runs the frequency speed in between the two choices you choose 998/384 or whatever your preference may be.
I would suggest flashing the classic rom by tommytomatoe. It gave me the best battery life on a sense ROM. NRGZ sense 3.5 ROM also lasted me awhile. Nothin will compare to Aosp tho since sense is a battery hog. Good luck

There's a lot of stuff to try for battery life. If you're looking for a miracle answer, you'll not find it. You need to try different kernels, read up on governors and what they do and so on. The link is to a script that has really sped up my EVO and I believe it has helped with battery life.
I was noticing the shots in this thread showing other's battery life but just remember, it's also what you use your phone for. High data games, surfing, Facebook, using GPS type apps will suck any battery dry. I use my phone a lot and am very happy to make it home in the evening to plug it in. Typically it can last 10 - 12 hours with about 5 - 6 hours of use. And I have tryed almost everything out there. Good luck and have a good time reading up on this stuff and trying different things. It's part of the fun of having a phone that allows you to tweak it. (Suck it, iPhone!)

you make very good points. for instance, i generally keep mobile data off because that is a killer. I also rush like crazy when i turn the screen on to get it off as quickly as possible. UV scripts do help
i get max 13 hours on the mikey rom for my evo 4g i guess its ok just has an overall horrible battery life.!
Maybe this is cheating for the purposes of this thread, BUT this guy ripped out all the Sense stuff he could and put in Go Launcher Ex, which would use less battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550526
It would look much like an AOSP ROM, so I dunno if you'd like that or not, but it has the sense stuff behind the scenes (e.g. kernel).
I got good battery life with it, but i didn't benchmark it or anything.

Android 4.1.1 Jellybean Battery Life Thread

Seeing how a new firmware came out on the Nexus S, I want to see what kind of battery life everyone is getting on Android 4.1.1 Jellybean. And since everyone cares about battery drain one way or the other, we can use this thread to post tips on getting more battery life and/or try to figure out what's causing battery drain.
---
Anyway, PLEASE include these when showing your battery usage:
What ROM/kernel/Governor you're using
A combination of the three can determine why/how you're getting the battery life you're getting. Also, post thread link for the ROM/Kernel if you can.
SCREEN ON TIME
Probably the most important thing to know when determining battery life. Since the screen uses the most juice and generally the amount of time we'd be looking at our screen, the screen on time is very important to show. You can get this by going to Battery > Screen
YOUR GENERAL USAGE
How you used your phone is another important determining factor of how your battery was used. If you took pictures or listened to music, that would explain why you got such low battery life. More information the better.
IMAGES
Images help as it gives information which would be probably be too difficult to describe. The Battery section in the Setting section would help as would Battery monitoring apps
A simple template would be the following:
Code:
[B]*IMAGES[/B]
[B]ROM[/B] -
[B]KERNEL[/B] -
[B]GOVERNOR[/B] -
[B]GENERAL USAGE[/B]
blahblahblah
[B]CONCLUSION[/B]
blahblahblah
----
ADDITIONAL TIPS
- Show images of CPUSpy. May help see if your CPU is running out of whack or if, for some reason, is running on 1000MHz too much.
- BetterBatteryStats app screenshots. It gives a much better detail on what's waking up your phone, what apps are using it, and so on. You can buy it HERE. It's a very good app to monitor battery usage.
- More images the better. So we know what's going on with your phone.
PLEASE DONT
- Embed too many images to your post. It'll be too difficult to look at this thread with hundreds of images being embedded at the same time. Plus, people looking on mobile phones would probably struggle opening the page. If you have a lot of images, please just post the link and not an image
Anyway, thanks! Hopefully we can get amazing battery life on Jellybean!

ROM - Jellbean 4.1.1 OTA from here: http://goo.gl/AXr2d
KERNEL - Default/Stock kernel
GOVERNOR - Default/Stock
GENERAL USAGE
Usage was, in my opinion, light and didn't really do much. Most of the time, I was on 3G only to go on WiFi when in a Starbucks. I turned off my phone when watching The Dark Knight Rises and trying to save the most battery but that didn't really seem to help. I used the camera once in a while but didn't listen to any music.
CONCLUSION
So far, this battery seems kind of... bad. Especially with my usage (which I thought was light), I thought I could get more screen on time than just 2h 14m. I'm a tad disappointed and might go back to ICS just for the better battery life.
ROM: Unofficial CM10 by Lego

The 2 hours of screen usage were from playing temple run, xda, and fb.

That's a good cycle IMO ^. Have you done a factory reset OP? Force of habit has me doing it anytime I do an update to avoid any issues. It also seems like you have a crappy signal at times. I haven't had a chance to actually judge battery life but mine seems to be on track to be about the same as it was as on ICS though.

Yeah. I'm gonna probably go back my KF1 radio once I update my ROM tonight.
IMO I always do a preliminary test the battery when the phone switch to airplane mode in a night, if the drain only 1% then the ROM is quite good.

Right? I miss the GB battery life, could leave GPS and 3g on all night, not touch it, and lose 2% in 10 hours. With ICS I was grateful if I could get it down to 1.5%-2% in an hour. And Google Now is too awesome to turn stuff off for, so JB is even worse

My battery life is absolutely horrible. I think my battery is bad though. I've had it since I got the phone. When the nexus came out.

Its one of those pay to play situations. My job has places for me to safely charge my phone so the battery isn't too big a deal for me. Best bet is to carry a spare charger. It is after all a pocket computer. Sucks, but until battery tech catches up, there isn't much us or many other smartphone users can do.
I think the background sync drains battery when idle. With sync on during idle, the batt drops ~3-6%/hr. If sync is turned off, it becomes ~1%/hr. (using 3G)
Exactly what Google things syncing would cause such a drain? I have this type of usage but all I have is Gmail syncing and I only get a few emails a day. I have obviously noticed increased life disabling Gmail, but how could it be using so much if it is push?
I'm getting, at least, the double than before...stock, unrooted
I don't understand this.....
The only thing using CPU is Android system at 5-15%... why is this happening? The screen was off for at least 8 minutes
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Since it just started up, and I'm guessing it is syncing like crazy. Calendar, instant upload if you have that in G+ or drop box chrome, contacts, drive, Gmail... Etc. Location is happening (maps, and latitude), checking for updates, weather. Check again in an hour and see if it has settled.

I havent noticed a problem with my battery. It's actually been pretty much the same. I go almost the entire day not charging it on normal use (almost 12 hrs). Heavy use with me is constantly playing games, I get maybe 3-5 hrs depending on screen brightness. It's pretty much the same as ICS for me

Best Battery ROM

OK so i installed almost every ROM on there and here is what i found.
TOP.
:good: CleanGB ---- Takes the crown, super fast battery charge in less then 45minutes the battery is full. Over a period of 8 hours in stand by(as i sleep) the battery did not drop at all.
CM9 ---- Took over 2.5 hours to charge the battery, in 8 hours it dropped 12% battery life.
CM7 --- Charged in 1.7 hours and dropped 17% battery in 8 hours.
The rest were terrible, I would not even bother.
All configuration were the same. Everything off (wifi, gps, etc)
After all i installed CleanGB again at the end. And guess what in the past 8 hours battery did not at all in standby. My phone last 3 days on the same battery charge again, with normal to moderate use.
This was the same battery same settings.
Let me know if you guys found something else.
GUI experience:
CleanGB is cool and simple, however i wish they would upgrade to Android 4
CM9 has an really cool interface but i can not tolerate the battery drain issue.
CM7 is the worst of the two, not so great GUI and bad battery life.
If you still think im crazy install CleanGB and see for yourself. CM9 just needs to focus on the battery drain.
CleanGB is more focused on the phone working as it should and they did that really well. :good:

CM10 isn't horrible, I think it's a step above CM9 honestly, Mine charges over night so i don't know how much it would drain. during a day of moderate use (texting, reading XDA and what not) I'm generally about 65% or so (If not higher)

I will try CM10, i didt think it was available for the epic. I do like the CM9 look but i hate the batter if CM10 is better then ill be happy.
Thank you. I will report findings.

The People's ROM. It's as good as CleanGB (ran that for several months) and is based off the latest official release (FC09).
My one personal cheat is to use the CleanGB kernel with TPR, so that may be why I get fantastic battery life.
CleanGB is cool and simple, however i wish they would upgrade to Android 4

Never going to happen. CleanGB (and TPR) are both stock TouchWiz based ROMs and it's not too likely that Sprint will offer an ICS update for the Epic.

ROFL!!! :good:
As to the topic, I have seen it posted by a massive number of users, that CM7 had much better battery life than CM9.
In fact, the number one reason I saw posted as to why people went back to CM7, after checking out CM9, was battery life.

This 100%
I' am on Cut & Paste Rom FC09 and this has given be best battery life as of today. I had clean GB earlier (sometime back) after which i tried all the other Roms (AOKP - ICS, MIUI - ICS, RandomRom 5.1) and then decided to try C&P and man this rocks !
I have got a battery life of 2 days with a talk time (voice call) of 4 hours and thats the best i have seen till now among all of the Roms on my phone
legendary.mtd + gps fix is just as good as cleanGB plus it has the 15 toggle mod
try AOKP, people says it has better bettery life than CM9, so you can keep the "cool interface" while saving battery lol. Me myself never bother with battery as long as it last more than 1 hours. Always carrying one of those portable charger, If the battery is low then charge it haha.

+1 for aokp...with the nexus modem. Typical 3 hours screen on time, over 18 hours on. Time with out signal under 4% every day. Used to be around 15% with epic modem under same conditions. Using 1800 touch battery.

The rest are horrible..? Thats not very nice, if your looking for a battery saving ROM, you should definitely try The Peoples Rom (TPR) and if your not satisfied with thatt, try Cut&Paste Rom. Those two ROM's are awesome.

On AOKP I enabled fast charge once, if you don't use it at all while it's on the charger I think it'll charge in 45 mins.
EDIT: here's a screenie from AOKP with fast charge enabled

Hmm perhaps I need to have didhiy do the kernel fix. There's a fix on the nexus s since people had the same problem. So far, I've only seen you and another person on the epic having that issue, which is odd. Talk to him though, since he fixed it somehow. His name is popssracer.

In my personal experiences, the newest Cut & Paste ROM has AMAZING battery life. I can get over a day easily at home all day with no charge, and maybe 15-24 hours out in the world (I'm a professional touring musician, so there's times where I have NO charging source at all).
What I noticed also has equal or better battery life to TouchWiz are MIUI ROMs. If you can manage your power usage and turn off data services when you aren't using them, I could EASILY get days out of battery on 2.1.6.

I would say if you know how to manager your data when you aren't using it EVERY rom can get great battery life... even cm10...

[Q] Disappointing Battery Life

I got a Nexus 4 yesterday, and so far it has been excellent. Really fast and has all the features I want. The battery life is pretty poor though. I am at 28% with a screen on time of only about 2 hours. The total time is about 8 hours. I haven't been using it a lot. The main thing consuming battery seems to be Nova Launcher for some reason. I have it on my Nexus 7 and it doesn't decrease battery life at all, but it seems to use a lot more on here. It was at 24% according to GSam Battery Monitor.
I just followed a bunch of instructions for increasing battery life from various websites so I will see how it goes. I now have all the Google syncing disabled, location services off and brightness on auto.
Is there anything I should be doing? Why is Nova Launcher's usage so high?
Thanks,
EDIT: Could it be the widgets I am using? I have two Gmail inbox widgets, the messaging widget and the circle battery widget.
Same here though I'm not sure its nova, my battery got as bad as yours when i rooted to stock.

it could, or any other apps you have working in the background. it can also be how you use the device. but before you assume anything about your battery life, give it 3-4 battery cycles before it normalizes.

Alright. I have minor OCD kind of thing so I always close the active apps through the task manager as soon as I exit them. I'll give it a few more days and then pursue the issue further.

im ocd about that too, lol. the back button to kill is one of my favorite custom rom features. also, autostarts and greenify are both great apps to make sure that you have mich less ctap opening in the background. anyways, im a heavy user normally, battery life on the nexus 4 id never call bad. usually i get 3.5-5.5 hours screen on time, depending on use. but then again, i use a custom kernel thats optimized for performance and battery. but, stock rom/kernel isnt bad on battery.
I too Force Close all the social networking apps before sleeping and turn wifi off. And i daily get around 4 hrs of OST. Will attach pics later to show. So to get 4 hrs OST you need really need to have a custom kernel. Just optimize your usage and you are fine with the stock kernel.
Phone is totally stock. Not rooted. And i got 6 pages on Apps installed.
I even used to clear RAM every now and then but I just stopped doing it as I couldn't find it doing anything better.
The battery life is much better now. Yesterday when I got back from school it was at 40% or so, and today it was at 68%.
Gets better after a few battery cycles. My battery life was average, so I rooted and with matr1x kernel it's snappier and better battery.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
i'm stock and my battery life was shockingly bad on the default settings until yesterday when i tried some fixes and they have made things much better.
looking at my N4 right now, i'm still on 58% after 22 hours. that's after several voice calls, some browsing & reading emails, GPS navigation using Maps, a couple of skype video calls, wake-up alarms etc.
basic fixes as follows:
- screen brightness right down to maybe 10-15%
- data off when not being used, ditto location services
- NFC and BT off.
- i've left wifi on as it doesn't seem to take much battery if it's not being used.
that's all! after charging last night, i woke after 6 hours or so and was amazed to see it had dropped only 1-2%, so apparently nothing is waking it from sleep.
One thing that really improved my battery life (when I had a Nexus 4) and something I tell to anybody with poor battery life, is to go into maps, go to settings, location settings, and uncheck "report from this device". If you've got the app "wakelock detector" just watch the wakelocks from maps almost entirely disappear. It nearly doubled my battery life at the time.

Hey thx man that didn't work but it did start me down the path to fix my problem.
I found out it had something to do with my GPS options its in settings and location access WiFi and GPS location options i checked it off and now i am getting 1 hour screen on time for every %10 if you do the math i have about 8hours of screen on time! I also have setcpu app which is giving me about 48hours of standby time, i will upload some screens after a bit more testing.

My battery life is brill and i never turn owt off or force anything to close, it is only bad when i play a 3d game or something but what do you expect. over night it only drops about 1% every 4 hours which is a bit bonkers.
(screen on auto, fully stock with Nova and not rooted)
root your ish bish and get dem kick ass kernel burnals and rom toms and you will nevers has to worry bouts turning ish off or freezing ice na saying homie foo schnickens 49 percent bombers up in this piece
still haven't charged my N4 since my last post on this thread.
now 1 day 15h and still 40% charge left

just do what people say, disable location useless stuff and monitor your wake locks.

If you would like to risk such things as unlocking bootloader, rooting, installing custom ROM and kernel, then it'd be easier for you.
Personally, I've found codefireX ROM and faux123 kernel to be battery friendly and very responsive, but of course you've got to be a bit fixed on such things as playing with your devices and getting fun from it to do that
another update:
after 20m browsing/ emails this morning and a couple of calls, i'm down to:
2d 9h 18m and 11%
disable auto brightness
