OK, lately I seem to get surrounded by iphone that seemed interested to my Nexus. I tried to explain what flashing custom ROMs. But they have absolutely no idea.
Just wondering what best to describe this to them. Perhaps drawing some parallels? I don't know. They just give me this funny look.
Easy. Explain that android is an operating system just like iOS and you are simply installing different versions of the android operating system.
Sent from my Nexus S
You can also say that Android is an open source operating system, and everyone can easily modify and tweak it, and as an user you have the ability to choose what you prefer and install it with few easy steps.
Yup
Android is Open source so building/flashing roms lets you have it your way
For the users preferences
Apple doesnt let you build off their sources. You gotta have it their way for the iphone user.
..oh wait you Can change your wallpaper with the iphone
Also you can "jailbreak" the iphone
Notice they call it Jailbreak .. ha

I would just tell them, "Oh, it's like installing Windows XP or 7, Vista, etc. Whichever I choose, on my phone."
If they're more Apple ish, replace Windows with "installing OS X, Leopard, Mountain Lion, etc"
"Anyone can modify Android as they like, so I have one of versions some guy made"
Just look at them smile and say.. oh you ain't up on that.. then walk away ..

The ability to do stuff you can't with your phone. Like uninstall crap on it, which would leave your phone as an expensive paperweight. Or the best way to avoid "fragmentation." Jk!
You can say something like having complete control of your phone from the ringtones and wallpapers to controlling the amount of power your phone uses etc etc. I always say something along those lines.

Ask them three question before starting any declaration:

All you would need is to draw a pic of a apple in jail and have a Android eating a apple on the outside of it :good:
You can just show them hour CWM app.. and say "oh you don't have an app for that ?" Then watch them go crazy looking through their app store for an app that does the same thing but better..
Don't waste ur time on idiots, but if u meet someone sincerely interested, then explain them using ur nexus (missed notification light, volume rocker wake etc) none of it couldn't be possible for our nexus without custom roms...
I'll just advice you to stay away on that topic. Its not Idiotic if someone loves one brand and others don't, so stay away on those post, its impolite. Also I've read other post explaining ticky tacky stuffs, what they told are just mere features not the whole meaning on to it. The correct explanation maybe is the ones who told you about installing Windows XP, 7 or 8 those are the closer ones, its like Eclair, GB, ICS and JB (not comparing them huh, just the closest thing there is).
If they are that interested maybe to purchase one Android Phone why not help them go through this changes but if the conversation go to flaming that is the sign for you to exit because no one wins anyway.
Personally I hate when they call my Nexus S an iPhone. I just kept telling what brand and model it really is, if they ask why not iPhone I just tell that its not really my style and 95% of the time they all nod no questions asked. I look at my phone anyway and it really looked like iPhone without the circle button. Anyway I got a White Nexus S with White Mercury Jelly Case, now you imagine that.
i had to explain that to a friend who uses an iphone.
i told him how great that is and that there are so many cool roms availabe. two weeks later he bought an htc hd2 and is happy

Why do you feel the need to post this here? Don't mean to come off as an a-hole, but no one cares if you've changed to the iphone, so you gave up a locked down phone for an even more locked down phone that isn't nearly as customizable or fun to use, over some rumors. So I assume this has something to do with P3Droids comments on Verizon "tracking" rooted phones right? (dude deleted the original post)
If your going to read into things like these, you have to keep up with them. If this guy would have, he would have known that Verizon currently can't actually see that your phone is rooted.
They HAVE implemented a way to see if your tethering in the new GB release. I think this is 100% acceptable for them to do. Period.
As for getting an iPhone. I'm not going to sit here and bash the phone. I may not like it as much as I do an Android phone, but everyone must admit the iPhone has some pros, like battery life. Everyone I know who has one has amazing battery life. This goes for Apple computers as well. Apple has it right with batteries.
Anywho, just thought I'd put my two cents in.

Swings and round abouts, it was actually the jailbreak community they stole everything from. Lots of pee'd of dev's now with redundant apps.
Hell they even employed a dev after already sticking his notification app into iOS 5 - way to avoid any legal issues.
on another note it actually looks more advanced that the android notification system.
without Apple and ios most phones would still be stuck on symbian with Nokia sitting in its hands milking the same crappy and outdated OS for years to come.
Let Apple copy and play catch-up , not a big deal imo.

I don't see the point of this thread. Oir the point of XDA keeping a separate domain for iPhone developers. Don't we all have smartphones in the end? Wouldn't it be better if we all had a common hub for developers to influence each other? I'd love a Blackberry section as well...

I agree, I think iPhones (and Blackberrys to some extent) are waaaaaaay over rated, they just have alot of hype.
Take BBM for example, it is almost exactly the same as WhatsApp, yet everyone is going nuts about it. The only feature it has over WhatsApp, is that is has a notification system where it tells you when the recipient has read the message. On the other hand, WhatsApp imo, is alot better because it supports Android, Nokia handsets, IPhone and I think, although not sure, BlackBerry too.
Besides, whats so much better about the iPhone/iPads? Except the fact that everyone glorifies them for no justified reason

whatsapp has nearly the same. 1 green mark next to a message says it's safely off your phone on the interwebs
2 green marks next to each other say it has landed on the device of the receiver.

There are apps that will flash your screen for various notifications. Try Missed Message Flasher.
Tablets are not designed to be your main interaction tool for notifications, that is your mobile phone. The tablet is really only there to do things when your actually using it
You could try the app NoLED https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.led.notify
It flashes up dots or custom icons on the screen when you get various types of notifications. It will also suck your battery a bit though.

It was meant if you want something simple and designed for a child, apple should be your choice. I'm tired of people complaining about the tiniest of details. Yes this tablet is small, but I'm not carrying it around as a phone. If i see my phones led light up and my tablet is closer I'll pick it up and check. I'm an avid Android fan, and apple irritates me. People have to realize this is a tablet, and not a phone. You can get it to act that way, but tweaking is involved. Android is for adults, and people with individuality. Apple is for confused close minded people. Sorry if my comment bothered you. I probably should have explained myself better lol

To know which batch your nexus 7 comes from, you need to look on the box it came in. That is where the serial and model numbers are. For example, mine is a C9O.

You just need to stop. Different revisions can have different issues. Maybe the guy wants to be proactive in knowing what to watch for. Maybe he wants to REGISTER it, which he would need the CXO number for. Maybe he wants to know if it is a model known for missing screen screws, or the one known for loose screen screws. Maybe a model that it helps to use screw washers with. There alot of things to be learmed from your batch number. If you would have taken the time to read and understand those particulars in varying batches, this could have been avoided. Therefore, your statement that nothing has changed except that there is no more 8gb, is wrong, and as a result, not helpful in the least.

Your incorrect info was saying nothing had changed, other than that the 8gb was no longer available. Fact is, things HAVE changed from batch to batch. Informed owners keep up with those things. I would recommend you google nexus 7 hardware revisions, so that next time you might be better equipped to understand the potential reasoning for the question, and not assume greed is at work. Anyone very familiar with the n7 would look at your respones of calling it a stupid question would immediately identify you as uninformed.

Honestly Dark Jedi, if you have no help to offer to the OP, kindly stop posting and keep your common sense. He has the right to ask. How is it any concern of ours why he wants to know ? If I offer you a cookie which smells funny, and should you ask me what the cookie is made of, should I answer your question or go, "Why do you want to know ? What ? If it's not the best ingredients, you want to throw it away ? In that case I'm not telling. Enjoy it". Honestly, don't understand what you have to gain from doing this to the OP.
@OP : Easiest way I could tell the difference between the old and new Nexus 7 was that the new one had 3G capabilites. So just take a look at your statusbar. If you're talking about the wifi only version, I guess the only difference I could think of is the new 32GB of memory storage.

I don't mean to Hijack OP's thread, but what SystemUI are you using for your phone?
Thanks!

It seems to be a trend I've noticed with the Moto X and now this phone. The devices and OS are getting so good, that very little is needed to "fix" them. I used to be a major flashaholic. I helped develop the method to convert an HTC One to GPE, I haven't run a custom ROM on a device for several months now. Stock Rooted with Xposed is all I need anymore.
Buy the phone for what it can do out of the box, not for what it MAY do in the future.
My 2 cents.
Once a flash whore always a flash whore. hehe Stock is great with the G2 but I just get bored of it rather quickly. I bounce around to whatever Rom is updated. As of now I like dr87's Roms because the echo is gone with the 801 builds. Some Flex Roms are nice too. Just make sure you back up your EFS. I'm thinking about trying the G Flex phone but not sure I want to do that because the G2 development is good. If the G Flex is to big then I would just wait for the S5 or G3 but if ya need a phone now the G2 is great. Might be able to get a discount for Valentine's day.

I took a loot at the Sprint section and the android develpment section was 2 pages long...
I plan on using this sucker for 2 whole years, I think I will wait until valentine's day like how sweets55 suggested.
Not really a flash-a-holic anymore. Just want to get rid of bloatware and add wifi tethering.
All signs point to yes on getting this phone

Look at the regular Android Development section or the Original Android Development section. They both have multi-variant support for tons of stuff including ROMs and general fixes/apps.
simple said it is NOT about third party soft .. it is about amount of end users .. yeah not many people in the world purchased G2 EVEN it is fastest android from all .. CURRENTLY .. it is just because it is not labeled samsung as more people know what that is .. plenty plenty people HAS NO IDEA what LG is ... they know what apple is and samsung .. even HTC or sony is more known .. that is the issue and u been leaded to here for answer for this question .. THAT is the WHY devs. focus more on samsung htc ,sony lg been crap in past .. LG became good in smartphones only in begining of 2013 .. that is just year only ..
