Thanks for the tip

Am not 100% sure but I will assume its 256kbps. I never bother to check these things, as long as you have a good quality headphones or speakers, you wont have to worry about it.

Google has a ton of free music. Check out this link. I try to purchase all the free stuff I can get (over 800 songs at this point)

I can't download for some reason.

Nonsense, higher grade equipment is way more sensitive to low quality music.

Volume Increase

I always thought the max volume lever was to low on the dinc. Just got the OTA to 2.2 and still the same. Took a flight Sat. and brought some .avi movies to watch. The volume is so low, even at max, that I cannot hear a lot of it. Frustrating.
Myphone is rooted. Is there anyway to increase or boost the volume?
Thanks.................MM

Be Careful
Blown speakers is a fairly common thing at this point. Be very very very very careful if you want to push the speakers further than they are meant.
Use a headset, then you get the hear it much better and not disturb passengers around you on the flight.
In-ear plug type or over-the-ear full coverage cans are the best for flights. I fly a lot and use in-ears all the time. Keeps the noisy airplane and babies out, and keeps the overly talkative neighbor at bay as well.
Maybe get some quality in earbuds that block out more external sound. I find the Dinc to be loud enough. I have tinnitus from playing in bars with my stack turned up too high. You do not want louder, it absolutely sucks hearing a ringing in your ears 24/7 for the rest of your life.

I was using in the ear sound isolating monitors. They seal well and block a lot of ambient sound. I tried 3 different movies in .avi format. Sound was way too low and I could not make out a lot of dialogue. I use Rock player. Would be nice if I had a player with an equalizer or gain boost.

What headphones exactly are you using? If they are a high impedance or have a low sensivity they wont get loud. I have the Skullcandy Titans and they get plenty loud.

no, 16 ohms is great, but 95db for the sensitivity is definitely not.
my headphones are 16ohm as well but have a 115db sensitivity. when listening to music i am usually about 3 or 4 notches from full volume, and that's about as much as i can take.

Is the Galaxy S line the best when it comes to music player?

So of all the android phones, is there any phones out there that has a better sound quality than the SGS line?
I know it's better than the evo 3d a far as playing movies I put on our from the computer. Anything over 1.5gb and this thing won't play it. Never had that problem with my vibrant.

No.. all android phones have ****ty sound quality and samsung is the only android maker that specializrs in sound entertainment and has been for years..
If I were Motorola or HTC or Apple even for that matter I would start buying the samsung speakers and putting them in my phone. I swear i've never heard such a tiny little friggen thing get so loud. If I play pandora for background music and turn it up, it's impossible to hear anything else lol. It's like a mini boombox.
And for the giant apple is, and how they are all about "music" and that jazz you think they would have a free mp3 downloader somewhere?? or that there speaker on their phone would actually put out some sound. I know quiet a few people with Iphones, if I ever don't like what their playing I just turn on mine.

Yeah, the speaker is great on my Vibrant.
But to the bs you sprouted about Apple having a free mp3 downloader...please say you were trolling.
Owning a vibrant I would have to say it has a decent sound quality.. I am using the trial version of Poweramp right now and it gives you advanced options to adjust the sound of your music.

i've always found that sony ericsson devices have great speaker clarity and volume levels. Nokia tends to be adaquate, but not ideal for walking down a busy street.
the htc evo 3d sounds better than my vibrant when played through headphones.
Am I the only one with a ****ty speaker then? Seriously, mine is horrible. I don't recall ever actually 'hearing' my phone ring, the fact that they called it vibrant was self explanatory to me then lol

Voodoo sound makes this thing sound better than anything else I've even listened HQ M4As on. It kicks the ass of even the best batch of iPod you can find.

even without Voodoo sound....
About the sound quality, the SGS comes very close to Ipods...the soundchip they use is good (read many reviews) but the sound from the SGSII is bad compared to other phones (also read many reviews about it).
I feel Vibrant is better.

the only problems i have with the music player on this phone has to do with a stock ROM issue causing the sound drivers to not work properly after leaving the phone on for 12+ hrs. a reboot fixes but pain in the ass
Speakers do blow also... Your speaker could be blown. Mine was, it didn't crackle or anything but it only worked at half the volume it should have... It just randomly happened.
Best music player, eh? If you're talking about playing music through the speaker on the player, then absolutely not. It's just good enough to use as a speaker phone, but sound quality through the Galaxy S's speaker is about as weak as you'd expect, meaning no bass to speak of and very little in the way of clarity.
Now if you're talking about as a music player more as an iPod replacement AKA using it with headphones, then I'd say the Galaxy S has the best sound of any system I've used as long as you use decent headphones or IEMs. For instance, if you go the Skullcandy or Jbuds route, the Galaxy S performs about as well as any other music player.
However, if you do some research and pick out a nice set of sub-$100 IEMs, like the MEElectronics M9 series ($13 to $20), MEElectronics M6 ($20 to $30), Brainwavz M1 ($35 to $46), NuForce NE-700X ($60 to $75), or my personal favorite MEElectronics A151 ($50 to $75)? Well, then the Galaxy S will send out clear, unadultered sound that a quality pair of IEMs can turn into jaw-droppingly beautiful music.
Of course, you'll need to do your research, test out different IEMs, and most importantly, find a perfect set of tips that give you the best seal (poor seal = tiny sound and weak bass). You'll also want the latest Voodoo, but use as little processing as possible. No more than the Voodoo AMP if possible.
No, I'm not an audiophile. I just play one on the internetz.

I'm debating weather to get the 8 or 16 gig. I'm meaning toward the 8 because I'm on a budget. But I was wondering how you guys/gals that's have the 8 are doing on space. How much space is actually available on the phone?

As for running out, it depends on YOU . Will you stream music, or keep it on your device? Will you keep movies on it (this I personally think is stupid because I can never enjoy a movie on a less than 60" of screen)? Will you play heavy 3D games, or just the light casual games like Subway Surfer or Bike Race? Even Dead Trigger is only 130MB of space, some games like Asphalt 7 take a whopping 2GB.
Also, if you plan on taking full advantage of the camera's 1080p video recording and like to take lots of 8mp stills, or photospheres, then you'd need to transfer all those to your computer rather requently to save space.

I have all my apps on the phone including some games, titanium backup, a few roms , 4/5 pinned albums in google music (rest i stream) , i have aokp build nov 26th installed (which is a bit smaller i believe) and I have 4.12 gb remaining.
More than enough for my personal needs. Guess it depends on the person.
One thing differently is I no longer save my nandroids on my device. I use tool kit to save to PC (which saves about 3.6 gigs) Pointless to save on the phone either way.

I stream music all the time with spotify any Google music. Never keep movies on my phone since I also can't enjoy movies on a small screen, plus I have Netflix. Don't really record a whole lot either, but I do take lots of pictures and they'll all be at 8mp. I can sacrifice game downloads as i find myself not really playing any. The one thing I do a lot is download Roms. But I dont think paranoid android is out in the N4 so I won't be doing that soon. Hmmm, so should I just get the 8gb ?

Agreed yes I use a toolkit and don't save a bunch of nandroid backups. I still have over 3.5gb left. I'm amazaid everything is the same as my skyrocket and I had over 10gb of space used up. Its just much cleaner and I'm making the effort to keep it clean. Now if I could go back I would still buy a 16gb. It just didn't end up that way even though I tried at the time and rushed into a buy. But now that I have an 8gb. I'm not worried at all just having to learn to use box.com for pictures and such. Its just up to the person I guess.

Not regretting it one bit. I stream all of my music and very rarely play games. All my photos are uploaded to Google plus so I can delete them if needed.
I have 4.6 GB free and the majority of space taken up is from Google music cache.

I am going with the 8GB, $50 is a pretty big premium for only a little more space. Basically my thinking is that if I wanted to keep a lot of stuff (movies and music) on my device then 16GB wouldn't come close to enough. This will be my 4th android phone and I have never installed more than a 1-2GB of apps. I have almost a 30GB dropbox accounts where my pics and home movies get uploaded automatically, a 50GB box account for any additional storage (ROMs, backups, etc), about 5GB of music on Google Music (I have an Ipod that is part of my car stereo anyway where I listen to most of my music) and then I have Netflix if I ever get bored with movies. Once I decide on a solution to stream my 1TB of HD movies from my home HTPC I can't imagine myself ever needing more than 1-2GB of phone storage, that still leaves me a 3-4GB buffer which should be enough if I ever want some local storage for movies/music when I'm somewhere without a signal.

Looks like the 8 GB is enough for your needs.
Just remember to save all your pictures somewhere besides the phone (should be a habit on any device anyways) periodically.
From my experience, GB ROMs are less than 100 MB but from my understanding ICS ROMs are at 150 MB, or less...? Either way you have plenty of breathing room after what your media uses up so you can hold plenty of ROMs. Other users above said they put backups on PC and had a lot of space freed up, so friendly suggestion to do that.
And me, I just ordered the 16 GB version. Just because I'm one of those people who just want extra space for the sake of being there. I'm probably going to have 8 GB or so of extra space.
The USB OTG thing was something I did HEAVY research on, because I assumed if older versions of Android supported it, then a newer one would too. Almost jumped for an S3 because Touchwiz adds complete native no root support for all things USB OTG. I guess I'll live without it until some dev gets a software mod working.

I'm doing fine with the 8GB. All my pics are automatically uploaded online and I delete them right away from my phone. Don't have many apps installed on my phone. As for Nandroid backups, I copy them to my computer for safe keeping and to save up space. Can always move it to the phone if need be.
As for music and videos - don't transfer much. Just stream mostly.
Just fine, I have a dozen video podcasts, a dozen audio podcasts, ~100 songs, a couple large games (RPGs) and some pics/vids...still have 2.22gb of free space.
Just go with the 16GB. It's better to have more storage, than to have not enough.

You forget that they're having major manufacturing problems: they simply can't make enough handsets, so the ones they do make have to be in the most commonly-ordered configuration.

What, twenty full-resolution 4MP photos and three and a half seconds of 1080p video take up just 4MB in total? I don't think so.
And if you decide to make one of those Event videos, they take up half a gigabyte each, according to TechRadar.

I have to disagree, I have a HTC evo 4g lte with 16gb internal and a 16gb external sdcard and I don't even have half of either of them filled up. I have 9gb free on the internal and a little bit over 8 on the external. And I have enough music on it to play music constantly over a month and not listen to the same song twice. Punny mp3? Man your talking to someone who lives and breathes the music industry. Quality of sound on headphones is limited so why would you want best quality on your phone. I have over 500 gb of high quality music on my desktop. That doesn't mean I want it all on my phone. I've done professional recording, I'm in and out of recording studios and I can tell you that there is a limit to what the best headphones can reproduce. Now if you are listening to your music via a high quality sound system all the time or most of the time then I understand why you would want wav files but other than that high quality encoded mp3 is the best you can get from headphones. And if you think in full of bs, you are completely wrong. I have a bachelor's in music education, a masters in music percmformance, a certified srt (sound recording thechnician) and am currently working on my PhD in musicology. So I know a thing or two about music quality.

The earphones I use do - I can tell a difference.
Above 256-320 kbps no human can tell the difference in sounds on earphones with pmp or mobiles..You need professional grade equipment or at least great DAC and music systems with a pair of high impedance high quality headphones [>300$] to hear that difference..not to mention really sensitive ears coz most people are not able to tell the diff even then...so please

I haven't found any control button headsets that work. Only the answer/end button works. I haven't tried on the N7 but I assume it would most likely be the same.
As for over the ear headphones, 70-80 Euros, try:
Audio-Technica ATH-M50-Old reliable...
V-Moda Crossfade LPs, which I have and are awesome, but it's a personal preference thing lol, since upgraded to the V-Moda M-100s, which I adore, but are expensive.
There are a few Sony's that are good, but I haven't tried them at all.
I've seen the Audio Technica, but they're double the price in Amazon plus local stores(around 150 euros), are the m40 and m35 any good??
I'll look into the v-moda too, didn't know them so well..Thanks for the help!!

I only have 1 pair of over-ear headphones (Beyerdynamic DT880 - 600OHm) but they're not portable. More of a hifi/home audio choice and they're in the $350 range. I would look up some pro audio shops around your area and see what brands/lineup they have and test headphones out in store. A lot of them have variance in how they sound and also how comfortable they are on your ears.
Also, the amp/dac in Nexus 4 is quite weak so you may want to go for something low impedance so that they can be driven easily without the use of a portable amp/dac.
Personally, I prefer smaller in-ear monitors for on the go and over ears for home. The author of that thread at head-fi also has a review done of in-ear monitors which you can check out if you decide to change your mind. Some of them in the lineup are also offered with an in-line mic/button setup so they can be used as headsets, or they have replaceable cables that can be switched out to one with a mic/button.

Thanks for all the info evonc, you've been of great help!! I have some in-ear monitors,a pair of Sony in particular..Their bass is great but lacking in mid and high, thankfully viper 4 android kind of rectified the situation..I'm leaning towards the AKG 518Dj, as they're the best value for money I can find in my area..Apart from my nexus devices they'll be used with my olde iPod classic and my PC.

Welcome. And yeah if you have the cash I'd suggest the Audio Technica M50's. Probably the best priced for performance over ears. I didn't enjoy their signature when I tried them as they're closed so I opted for the dt880's. You can try to find the Audio Technica AD700's which I believe are open ear and go for much less as well.

Damm...So many great choices,so little budget ..Thanks all for your interest and feedback but sadly I had to lower my budget once more and I'm lucky I found a great deal for the akg 518Dj for around 30euros. I'm enjoying their sound for the money spent so far.Once I get a job again I know where I'll be spending a part of my first paycheck..

Philips citiscape uptown. They used to cost €150 but can now be bought for around €60. Reviews are good, especially if you appreciate a more real sound instead of the bass heavy garbage beats produces. They say those Philips are even better (or the same) as the ath-m50. Just look for some reviews . They have a mic as well
