See en.wikipedia.org[/slash]wiki[/slash]Froyo_(operating_system)#Android_2.2.x_Froyo
Froyo is based on Linux kernel 2.6.32

[Q] [HOW-TO] CM7 by Epsylon -> CM7 by Quarx

Hi to All!
My device is Defy with red lenses.
Currently I have cm7.2 by epsylon which is actually for Defy+ (13 dec release).
I want to move back on Quarx CM releases. But they have old kernel. So when I install Quarx releases my phone is getting stuck on moto logo
How can I normally move back on Quarx releases without data lost and flashing full sbf?
Thanks for any advice!
Wich version use your phone : Froyo, GB 2.3.4, GB 2.3.6... Because if your phone is on GB Version you can't use Quarks CM7 and all the other roms with Froyo kernel.

You have to flash the CM7 kernel from here and then you'll have to wipe data and/or cache before installing the Quarx's build. I think it's the only way without SBF :/

[Q] CM9 kernal question

I'm still relatively new to all the custom flashing etc., but had a question about cm9 and the multiple versions for the froyo and gingerbread kernels.
Does that mean if you have a green lens defy, you should use a certain kernel? ideally wouldn't you want the newest kernel?
does cm7use froyo or gingerbread kernel?
why wouldn't cm9 use an ics kernel? is there an ics kernel?
I hope this isn't too silly a question.
thanks
it's complex but perhaps not complicated ;P

I quote from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353003 "Builds from the 7.Dec and after are made for gingerbread kernel (2.3.4 betas for defy and/or for 2.3.6 recent defy+)"
You should read that first post carefully because it has info about what the kernel-differences are between builds.
Also study the first 3 posts in this thread about CM9/ICS instructions and bugreports, has links to different kernels and info on kernel choice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20097916#post20097916

Green-lens (SOC) camera has problem with some Kernels !!!
Some new Defy+ phones can not downgrade to 2.3.4 kernel so development of CM9/ICS nightlies is in separate branches.
To understand better read this:

CM7 is now "old" and made for FROYO kernel DEFY.
CM7.2 Nightlies are NEW and use both froyo and gingerbread kernel, so you must install a nightly build compatible with the kernel AND hardware you have. Variants are many, Defy greenlens, Defy redlens, Defy+ (redlens+bigger battery, no froyo-downgrade possibility etc because of locked moto-bootloader and Efuses )

For older defy phones cm9 builds after 7dec2011 uses 2.3.4 kernel
For new defy+ phones cm9 builds use 2.3.6 kernel
Kernels are NOT INCLUDED in (most?) CM9 Nightlies !

not silly ! it's all very confusing in the begining, and my answers are not 100% truth, because there are so many versions of defy/defy+ firm/soft/hard-ware etc so it's impossible to generalize, so for better understanding you have to study the forum and the guides more.
Have fun

[Q] How to know what kernel i have

I'd like to know how to check what kernel i have installed (GB or froyo kernel), independently from the ROM i have installed, is there any way?
may it help you.

So, if i didn't get it wrong... the regular defy only support the froyo kernel and the defy+ only the GB one??
or, i can flash a GB kernel on my defy (MB525)??

You can flash a GB kernel on Ur MB525 .. but GB kernel has some hardware constraints like in green lens MB525 camera doesn't work.. etc ..
So if ur's is a green lens MB525 don't flash GB kernel ..if not u can flash it..
as of now all stable ROMs like CM7 , Miui , CM9 Beta (Quarx builds) are froyo kernel based..

[Q] What Kernel...

for an error i flash the GB kernel (only for red lens users) but my phone was a Defy+...what kernel should i install now for flash the last cm10 from Quarkx?
please help me :|

[Q] flashed gb kernel on defy, still says 2.6.32?

I used the gingerbread kernel from the link below but my kernel still says 2.6.32. Shouldn't it start with 2.6.35? Did I do something wrong?
