Ok.... Two questions about the new Razr M just announced:
1) Do you have to get the developer edition to use rooting, advanced features, etc.? Or will there be an XDA way?
2) Does VZW usually ship phones that are pre-ordered the day they are announced, or beforehand?
Someone will have the standard version rooted.
Developer Edition will allow full customization though which would be nice.

Can you elaborate on full customization? Do you mean without the developer edition, no custom roms?
Developer edition will have unlockable bootloader which would allow for more customization than what you could do with the standard edition. What we can do on our Razrs (standard) will probably be the same as what we'll be able to do on the Razr M. Dev edition would allow for more customization I think better kernel customizations, more custom roms, downgrading versions (which from what i understand is not possible now due to lack of unlockable bootloader)

So the current razr bootloader can't be unlocked? And no ROMs are available?
Interresting thread, I am looking to replace my HTC Desire S and this Razr M looks like the perfect upgrade.
All I need is official MIUI JB support
I guess this should be done by itself if the phone is easly unlockable.
The specs are just so nice, small design, big screen, no cheap plastic, dual core...
Moto Razer the new dev editions well be fully capable of every little thing from voodo and dual dualig with source and full unlock boot loader I mean look at samsungs phones the international ones way to big ..posted and regular development like crazy.. look at the moto every hates them so bad cause they lock down like fort Knox but now its shock and awe ... the xiaomi m2 is still better

Looking at the security on the Atrix HD and the HTC One X that is a rather bold claim that it will 100% be rooted. I would not say to expect root on any device from now on unless the bootloader is unlockable.
What is the point of Moto having a bootloader unlock tool if it only works on dev editions?

It doesn't only work on them. Photon Q example 1.
Verizon is the reason you need a "Dev" Edition of a device on their network.

I think saying that it WILL be rooting is being highly optimistic. They should not buy a retail and expect root. Why bother developing a root exploit anyway, when people who want it could have gotten the Developer Edition instead

Because they are discriminating against the technical community and you can't get the developer edition on contract.

If you are on contract you can definitely buy one, however it is full retail price. It certainly could be rooted, but I think not to hold your breath.

Most will have to start doing this anyway on Verizon to keep their Unlimited data. If they can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen
Does dev edition being unlocked means that if I put a tele2 sicard in it it would work? (assuming tele2 and VZW use the same bands)

After 2400 + posts, I think you should be able to answer some of these questions on your own. But seeing that I am bored, I pre-ordered and received the phone by the 13th (the released date.)
Seeing that the phone has only been released for two days, I would not expect the normal edition to be hacked yet. There aren't even any custom ROM for the dev edition either.
"What WILL be available on the RAZR mod wise?" Blender, coffee maker, Pez dispenser, and transformation abilities into the iPhone pending Apple litigation.

Unlockable bootloader does not mean unlockable for carrier.

hope its true, fingers crossed... i am so excited
I hope you guys get it.
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
It would be about damn time!
wha..........................
I just heard about this on another forum i'm on.
The only bad thing about the atrix is blur. Its about time they ditch it.
Don't bet on it. The leaked RC does not have an unlocked bootloader.
We will know when the soak test starts what we are actually getting.
Motorola has not said nothing about release dates. It does appear it will be this month though by activities on the Moto forums.
Also, the unlock being shown appears to be Pudding given the timeframe, which as we all know is not from AT&T or Motorola.
This link is a month old, and speculation at best, and also it appears misinterpretation of Briefmobile.
Not yet
They won't...yet
so did this happen? What else is new for GB? I hope internet speed is improved.

i dont see how ATT has anything to do with it when motorola is selling atrix phones all over the world with locked boot loaders. is ATT able to dictate to carriers in europe to not have an open BL? point is, its motorola's own doing and nobody else's.

Just because it didn't happen doesn't mean it won't. Moto publicly said they would be unlocking bootloaders at the end of this year, PENDING CARRIER APPROVAL.
There are always alternatives available now
We need your help to unlock all Motorola bootloaders.
Help us by signing the petition to achieve 7500 signatures.

Regards.
Well, asking that in a Xoom forum is kinda pointless, since the Xoom's bootloader can be unlocked in under a minute using standard SDK tools (ADB & Fastboot).
Neverthless, Motorola has been kinda of a pain in the butt by making it really hard to unlock BL in other devices (like the Razr - XT910).

Agreed,
Pretty redundant to me to post something like this here when we all can unlock our bootloaders using the tools this great website given us.

There's a reason the Xoom is the only Moto device I own...
But is there a corporation that does this across the board? Aside from promises, of course.

To be perfectly honest, I'll be surprised if these petitions amount to anything beyond making the people who signed them feel good about doing so. "Last purchase of Motorola phones if they don't unlock the bootloaders?" Let's be honest: the number of people who care about locked bootloaders is merely a fraction of their overall user base, which doesn't give a damn about rooting or unlocked bootloaders or custom ROMs. All of us combined could refuse to buy Motorola phones tomorrow, and it wouldn't affect their bottom line in the slightest. It's just not a threat to their business. Now, maybe these petitions will make some sort of difference, I don't know, but please don't labor under the illusion that we're any threat to their bottom line, because such a concept is laughable at best.

I find it humourous that people think that partitions can FORCE big corporations to do something. I doubt you can force a singly person to do anything. Love the "force" word.. maybe you can use some Jedi Mind tricks on the Motorola CEO?
Is there any developer working to unlock the bootloader or root the CDMA Verizon moto g (XT1028).?
Not sure, but there is a bounty of ~$200 waiting for someone to come along and unlock the bootloader.

This is my first post on the forums. I know this is probably a very noob question. I'm pretty positive my S5 is not a dev edition because I bought it from the Verizon website but...I read on another thread about the hardware version on some of the dev phones sayin it was version G900V.05. When I look at my hardware version it says that also. Does this mean my phone is a dev edition? Please excuse my noobness. lol

That's what my understanding was as well. I saw the .05 version mentioned in another thread so I was just entertaining that tiniest bit of hope that it was true even though I figured it wasn't. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the software and not the hardware be the difference in the two versions?

A sure fire way to tell whether it is a Dev Edition or not is to look underneath the battery. It will say "Developer Device" in black lettering embossed in the plastic framework.
