Galaxy 10.1...What the...!? - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Saw one for the first time at a local shop.
Screen is AWFUL...might as well buy a ipad2 for that diluted contrast. How can Samsung, the king of displays, come out with such crapiness...Wow!
(My precious, precious 7.7...)
XK

why is this here?

Because I can not understand the HUGE difference between the 7.7 and 10.1 displays quality and would like it commented by fellow 7.7 users.
Is it OK with you?
XK

Probably a pentile display, right?
Samsung really needs to get their act together on this, is absurd that they put a pentile display in their flagship phone.

SAMOLED+ vs LCD. Big SAMOLEDs are expensive, which explains most of the price of the 7.7 compared to the 7+. A SAMOLED 10.1 is not feasible today.

Samsung hasn't really got a 'good' 10.1 tab, as the Galaxy note 10.1 is as bad it seems.

I understand that...but the TFT on my original Galaxy was quite good...and so was the one in the 8.9, which I passed only because of that "lack of SD slot" stunt.
Seeing that 10.1, it's like they're moving backwards...

I am sorry. I should have made clear I was writing about the version 2.
...not only does Samsung load-up their "tab cannon" and sprinkle tabs all around but they also make sure the naming is as confusing as it could be...Together with screens that actual get WORSE, no wonder Mr. Hankil Yoon finds they are not doing very well

Yeah, the Tab 2 isn't the successor to the regular Tab. It's more of a low cost alternative, while the new "high end" 10.1 tablet, which you're supposed to compare to the original Tab 10.1, is the Note 10.1. AFAIK, the Note 10.1 compares well with the original Tab 10.1 in every aspect.
Yesh, confusing as hell.Samsung should have made their names more straightforward.

Quit all your damn griping and enjoy your stupid consumer electronics. Get some bleedin' perspective on life.

8.9 / 10.1 Shared forums?

Seeing as it's likely both 8.9 and 10.1 inch Galaxy Tabs will share specs and Honeycomb, could we either give 8.9 it's own sub-forum or merge to have the forum as Galaxy Tab 2 or Galaxy Tab 8.9/10.1? Or perhaps an 8.9 forum on it's own?
Thanks
It somewhat saddens me they went with 8.9'', I wanted something comparable to the iPad's size but not smaller. Irrelevant to this thread I know...
Thanks for the idea, Bandage.
We'll wait to see if they're basically the same internally. If they are, then I'll bring up the matter with the admin team and we'll decide what will be done. Generally the deciding factor for matters like these is whether the two devices can share ROMs with little or no modification. For that, only time can tell.

I wonder if they are going to "do an apple" and, on the 22nd, announce the 8.9" version, and release both of them soon after?
For me, I think 8.9 would probably be the ideal tablet size as you can use it one handed in portrait mode.
I think I am going to be between the Samsung 8.9 and the LG Optimus Pad (which there is no forum for) for my tablet purchase! I have no need for the 3D capability of the LG, so if the specs are similar, it will probably come down to price.
Sent from my Amiga 500 using Workbench
I disagree
For me, 8.9" is the perfect size.
7" is too small for tablet, 9.7" (iPad) and 10.1" is too big.
8.9" would have better battery life compared to the same 10.1" because the screen is smaller. Hey, additional 15 to 30 minutes because of this is nice!
And of course, it should be lighter as well
The only thing I hope is ... better screen ... like SUPER AMOLED. I know, this not gonna happen, but ... hope is hope ... dream

xoom or(vs) new galaxy tab

the new designed tab (8.9 n 10.1) has been announced. i like the new look very much, n sdcard is now available, but sadly the camera has been downgraded to 3mp =( n it looks a bit lag in the video by androidcentral in youtube..
n, is 8.9 using tegra cpu?
anyone think i shud jump to xoom iinstead?
I think I'm firmly on the new 10.1 Tab right now. 3 MP camera is something I can live with, in exchange for the slimness and weight. I think they displayed an older build (10.6 mm) thickness, with TouchWiz on it on the AC video. So, I don't want to jump to conclusions on the lag

But why in the world would you ever need a 8MP camera on your 10" tablet??? Is there ever a time when you have your tablet with you and not your phone or other digital camera/DSLR and you just need to take a hi-res photo?

I agree. I only use my phone camera for an "Oh Crap" spontaneous photo, not a thought out photograph where high res makes a difference. Not to mention that the quality of the lens really determines the end quality of the image. You can find shots taken on a 3MP camera with a great lens that will blow you away.

I haven't see the Androidcentral video. But apparently there were no functioning new Galaxy Tab 10.1. The old 10.1 was used to demonstrate Honeycomb and TouchWiz. So I probably wouldn't worry too much about that, since that isn't the tablet we are getting anyway.
I'm not concerned about the camera. I'd like to have a camera, but I don't require it to be uber. I think having a good camera on my smart phone is far more important, because it's easier to hold and click pictures with a 4 inch phone than a 10 inch tablet.
Xoom disappointed me, I returned mine after a few days. It was too heavy, didn't feel comfortable to hold long, and the screen was good, but not great.
Galaxy Tab is much lighter and appears to be more comfortable to hold. Comfort is huge, I want to be able to hold this thing in my hands without fatigue or sharp corners digging into my fingers.
And the PLS screen, no doubt will blow away whatever type of panel the Xoom is using.

I just got back from the Verizon store and spent a good 20 minutes with the Xoom, and honestly my arm got tired. That thing is HEAVY. Its the first thing you notice when you pick it up. It is obviously solidly built which is what the weight offers, but man I couldn't see myself using that thing with one hand for very long.
1.6lbs is heavy. If these things come out and are solidly built for 1lb I'll be sold on it.
Should also note that using the Xoom makes me realize I probably won't want anything smaller than a 10.1" tablet. The Xoom has a much smaller footprint than the iPad because it is 16:9 and not 4:3. I think the 8.9" might be a little too small. I like the 10.1" ability to be able to view full web pages without pinching/zooming to read them properly.
Yep, I'm sold on the 10.1 even though i swore to never purchase a Samsung device. I'm putting my Xoom up for sale as of today

Nvidia's tegra site has the galaxy tab 10.1 listed as having the tegra 2
I will probably look to buy the 10.1v (or whatever they end up calling the original). I want to buy in the next month or so, so if it's not available it will be the iPad 2 until June.
Have you seen the needle like charger tip for the xoom? Bad things will happen to something so flimsy... That's half the reason I took mine back. Other half is the new Tab 10.1.

another xoom or tab 10.1?

I need another tablet for the wife. Was thinking about giving her my current xoom and getting the samsung 10.1 when it comes out.
Is there any reason why I would regret that decision? It seems like the samsung is just as open as the xoom. I have nothing against the xoom, but since I just bought a samsung galaxy sII i thought it would be nice to match it with the new tablet.
I just want to know if I am overlooking something, and there is a reason I should stick with the xoom.

Now, we aren't certain about anything yet.
I hate TW (Vibrant owner) as much as the next guy, but I've heard conflicting reports (too lazy to properly cite right now) on whether the new incarnation of TW will simply be a UI overlay, or a fully integrated modification to the OS.
I'm certainly keeping my ear to the ground re: the new line of Galaxy tablets.
That said, if the tablet need is now, the Xoom is the best bet IMO.

Please put a disclaimer when you post this. There is no confirmation whether or not these devices will have touch wiz. Many reports even say that if it does come with TouchWiz, it will be able to be turned off.
I actually plan on selling my Xoom once a tablet with the new Qualcomm chipset comes out. I didn't realize the media limitations of the Tegra 2 until after I bought it and am having a bit of buyers remorse now. The new Qualcomms can decode 1080p like the TI used in the Playbook. I'm not sure if this is something that can be addressed by nvidia via drivers. For the record I'm able to play high profile (4500kbps) 720p encoded with DVD Catalyst on my Xoom.

The Samsung 10.1 tab have about same weight as the ipad2, so will be a bit lighter than the Xoom, not sure if this will affect battery life.
The biggest advantage of the 10.1 tab I think will be a better screen than the Xoom. I’m happy with the quality and viewing angle of my Xoom. However, when compared to my 7” Galaxy tab and friend's ipad, the Xoom’s screen looks dull and not as bright.
All depend on how long you want to wait for the 10.1 Galaxy tab.
Also the Galaxy tab 8.9 (470g) is almost light as the 7" Galaxy tab (380g), that might be a good 2nd tablet.

From the specs we saw on the GT 10.1v (the older model) the battery size will be the same or slightly bigger than the Xoom.
FWIW. I'm growing a bit tired of the size/weight of the Xoom. The 8.9 (or other similar sized/weighted tablets) might be up my alley. The Xoom is just too clumsy and heavy for extended 1 handed use (not to mention that the UI is not very landscape 1-hand friendly). I'll take a device that is made out of plastic as long as its light and well built for the components.
I think they mentioned that the touch wiz ux is just a set of widgets and not fully integrated into the system

That Tab 10.1 is a sexy looking device. Tough decision. It might be worth going with the 10.1 just to get the better screen, though IIRC, it doesn't have a SDcard slot (not that it's doing us Xoom owners much good right now).
That said, I think physical storage capacity is almost irrelevant anymore. I have both Amazon cloud for my music and Google cloud for pictures and docs. The only storage I actually need is for apps, and they're generally small.

I think you're right. Can't remember, but I feel like the 8.9 didn't have a SDcard slot though. Could be wrong.
The new samsung galaxy 10.1 should be a nice tablet and should not come with anything but pure honeycomb with some added apps/Widgets.
Other tablets to consider, besides the ipad2 or new Samsung 10.1:
Asus transformer, which will be short on stock and hard to come by for the next few months or so. It has a nice pricepoint and some nice accessories.
Nook color, just updated to basically be a pseudo tablet but has alot of Dev/rom support so is pretty much full blow android experience.
HTC flyer, will have some very awesome features especially very accurate integration with stylus, not using honeycomb experience but should be upgraded to honeycomb soon after release.
Playbook, nice tablet but is kind of hampered at the moment and is meant more for business user in my opinion.
Toshiba 10.1 inch tablet rumored to be Google's baby and if true should get great honeycomb support. This will be THE tablet if all the rumors are true (do a Google search for nexus tablet or nexus t). We should find out at Google I/o on may 10th or 11th.
Honestly I would go with the xoom or the Toshiba tablet. I would certainly wait till Google I/o to make a decision since the xoom should have some updates coming down the pipe as well.
I for one will keep my Xoom and upgrade a year or 2 down the road (I'll give it to my wife or something) to the latest octuple core processor 1mm thick 10" tablet capable of playing 4K video flawlessly. Then I will laugh at all of you with your old samsung 10.1's! bwahahaha
I'd wait to see if it has a working fastboot first, and can flash unsigned images.

[Q] Wich one should I buy?

Hi, I am actualy an owner of first galaxy tab 7 version and I am considering the change to a newer one. I have in mind 2 or 3 options and I guess someone helps me with my decision. I dont want a 10" one because is too big for me. I am considering the 7.7 the p6210 and the 8.9" one. I dont care much for 3g as I can tether from my phone. I see the 8.9 comes with a tegra 2, is the procesor better than the 7.7? what about the p6210?
As I have been reading, the 7.7 is the only one that uses super amoled and I guess is better than normal tft...
Any help?
I would like to have a thin and light tablet, dont care too much of watching movies, and if possible officially upgradable to ICS, not SOD too.
Thabks in advance.
The best thing to do is to go try them out in a shop. Having said that, I'm guessing that if you liked the old tab and found the 10.1 too big, you will probably prefer the 7.7 over the 8.9. The 8.9, as far as I can recall, has the same internals as the 10.1. The 7.7 is only marginally larger than the old 7, has a faster processor than all of the other galaxy tabs, and is the lightest too. And has the best screen.

Depending on your needs, the chipset on the 7.7 might prove to be faster but the tegra 2 is no slouch either.
The screen on the 7.7 is a bit of a lottery as with all SAMOLED based screens produced after the Galaxy S. If you compare both side by side, depending on your preferences you might find the 8.9 to show a more natural color tone, better white brightness and an over all uniform screen color, the PLS screen is very decent. The SAMOLED plus gets better black levels though and more saturated colors.. still all in all a preference thing.
If they had a Tab 7.7 with the very same form factor and weight but with PLS screen id get that one instead.
and what about the p6200? looks like a little brother of the p6810 and bigger than p1000... is dual core too, and a little bit resolution, any one know something about this one? Nobody in spain knows anything about this!
The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Its been out for a while in my place and its also a good choice if you dont want SAMOLED.. its a tad bit heavier than the 7.7 but noticeably thicker. It also has the Mali-400 GPU and Exynos chipset at 1.2Ghz.
I kinda dislike text quality on it as I kinda see something that looks like interlacing going on with the text.
i am serioulsy the p6200/p6210 but I have been reading the xda forum and have seen that almost everyboy has the SOD problem and Samsung has said nothing yet...
As I can see, the more stable one right now is the 8.9" one... Despite of the weight and not as thin as the others... Not amoled too.
7.7 is my choice of tab, superior screen to my 7+ I wouldn't go any bigger than the 7.7 as it would be too uncomfortable to hold in my opinion. 7.7 screen is so much clearer and better in the sun. I find my 7+ a bit hard to see sometimes.
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda premium
I dont know how wide spread the random SOD is but it happens to my note and as well as others using full stock.
Despite the screen possible screen issues, im still getting the 7.7 though.. since you came from the original P1000 I think the P6800 is a better upgrade.. just make sure you buy locally incase you need to return/exchange it.
ouch! this.does not sound good. Anyone knows if its hardware or software? Hope Samsung will.fix it...

I'm very happy with mine so far.
To add a bit to my earlier post. I think a really important factor is how you intend to use the device.
The old 7, 7.0+ and the 7.7 can be comfortably used with one hand for a somewhat extended period of time. (I do that with my 7.7 on the commute, often *standing* in public transit.) The fact that the 7.7 is the lightest device (335g) in this group is a very big plus for me.
From what I can see, the 10.1 (as with the iPads) is more comfortably used with both hands, or in a lap. While the 8.9 might be smaller and lighter, it is still closer to the 10.1 in this respect than the various 7s.
More than anything else, it was my expected usage pattern that determined that I would get the 7.7. Conversely, my current satisfaction or happiness with the device has a lot to do with this usage pattern.

I've had the GTab 7+ since November nad have never experienced SOD. Rooted an CWM. Fine tab and price has dropped to about $350US. No issues reading but as with all 7" webpages can be a chore...depending on the site really and not the tablet. Very smooth tab. The Xynos (spelling?) processor is MUCH better than the Tegra2 IMO. Great battery life, excellent screen (for not being SMOLED). On track for ICS according to Samsung. The fact the 8.9 doesn't have uSD broke that deal for me where the GTab 7+ does have uSD and IR for TV's, stereos, etc.
That said, I am lusting after the 7.7! Or waiting to see if the GTab 8.3 specs out well.

I still can't believe they re-released the 7" and 10.1" without much improvement
Any word on when the 11.6" is rolling out?
Unfortunately, none of their larger offerings seem to stand up well against the new iPad. iOS limitations aside, that thing looks pretty nice.

It's always amazed me that Samsung in particular, with their display panel manufacturing capability, has never bothered to put out a tab with a decent resolution. I understand that there are manufacturing issues with current AMOLED technology, but there is no good reason that Apple doesn't even have WUXGA or even 1080p LCD competition in the 10" bracket. It's things like this that make me wish iOS and Apple in general weren't so awful.
Ohh please the new ipad is just a glorified updaded ipad 2, nothing really new came out. Its like the new 10.1 is an updated original 10.1. Samsung all the way

Well, Apple vs Android battles are perhaps the dumbest thing going on the internet, but that new iPad screen knocks the 10.1's **** in the dirt.

Except there is literally 0 improvements made on the second version other than external sd card reader
Also every dimension/weight went up
It looks like apple addressed my main two gripes with their tablet. Ram and screen
Well, maybe Samsung will be neck and neck. The new 11.2 is supposedly going to have a 2560x1600 screen. So, the density will be close to the new iPad's 9.7 2048x1536 display. 11.2 is getting on the big side for portability, although that does look like a nice device. Although, no word on release timeframe.

Update: Whoops, looks like Samsung probably won't announce that device anyway, but instead some kind of Angry Birds crap.

Does anyone still play Angry Birds?
