Hi fellows xda, i'm an international student here in the States and I just came 3 days ago. Now after purchasing a T-mobile SIM Card I realize that, T-mobile 3G network does NOT work with my device, which is an iPhone 3Gs unlocked. I do not know its origin because a friend give it away to me, but I can use it normally in Asia so I assume that it uses 900/2100 UMTS band for 3G/HSDPA.
After a while of searching now I know that none of T-mobile nor AT&T support this baseband, so my question is, are there any other U.S service provider that support this band so I can get 3G/HSDPA working on my phone ? I desperately need this feature because I need to skype with my family back home. So please, any suggestion would be helpful. I don't want my phone will be a brick here because it doesn't have internet on it.
Thank so much guys for any help or suggestion. I'm waiting for all your replies.
I think the 3gs has 1900.

T-mobile uses both 1700mHz/2100mHz bands. 1700 for the downlink. 2100 for the uplink. It won't work only on 2100.

yes i do know that basically my phone will not have any 3G on T-mobile.
so is there any other network provider that will work with my phone ?

i don't really know. maybe. i just know for sure that it has 2100 because my country's where i use it with 3g is 2100.
i'll give it a shot this weekend anyway. thanks for the tip.
EDIT: yes, i've search. it does operate on 1900. so i'll be changing to at&t next month then. because i've already payed for the 1-month prepaid t-mobile plan though.
thank you so much
EDIT: but it seems at&t plans are a little bit expensive for a student like me. and i do see complains about the service. so if possible. are there any other network that work with 850/1900/2100 3G baseband ? just curious. so i will be like having a choice. if not, it is att for sure.

yeah it is a little too much. like double what i have to pay for my T-mobile. just 30 bucks for the whole package including the SIM already, 100min talk, unlimited sms and data. so it just as good. because i don't call that much though. just data. thanks for the detail anyway. appreciate it. so i'll be heading over att next month.

I'm just making this thread for the future. If its possible if people can tell us if they have gotten their atrix working on t mobile and how they did it and if hspa works because it does have the bands for it according to the Motorola website. Thanks for any info.
Yo I got it to work with simple mobile with their 4g. Just go to gsmhosting forums and buy a code from their advertised sites. They email it to you in 5 minutes, just input imei and that it.
So this phone would or wouldn't work on t mobile? I know in the past I haven't bothered with ATT phones on TMO because the 3g is at different frequencies...but if the phone is 3rd party and supports all the frequencies then theoretically this phone should work on TMO, as any other phone would.... Anyone know for sure though..?
Thanks for the info. Now just for t mobile to make sure. I know simple and t mobile almost the same but I don't just wanna go and spend 550 and be stuck.
Simple mobile uses the t-mobile towers so lol yeah ! As I said I got it working with simple mobile and they have 4g too.
Can you do a speed test for me? And where and how much was the unlock code? Thanks.

Well he may just be confused a bit. After it's unlocked it will work on T-Mobile, but not the 3G/4G due to the band differences. So it won't be worth the $599 if you don't get to use the fast speeds.
Of course not.

Hello,
Maybe you guys can help me clarify something for me. I want to buy this phone and get the unlocked version. Only problem is no matter which seller I'm looking at on Ebay they're all saying "3G Not compatible in the U.S" which means I'll be running at 2G and I actually considered this ok because i really want to this phone. But I want to know why it won't work? If it's a GSM phone and it would work with AT&T & T-Mobile my local carriers why wouldn't it give me 3G speeds?
I really want this phone because I wanted something different, something you won't see out here much. Plus I wanted to get back to Sony phones after playing with other manufactors. Can anyone help clear this is up for me?

For the same reason that a T-Mobile US GSM handset won't give you 3G on AT&T - it's the wrong frequency.
Most of the world uses the 2100MHz band for UMTS/HSDPA but AT&T are awkward and use 1900MHz and 850MHz and T-Mobile are even more awkward and use the extremely unusual 1700MHz band.

No they don't.
T-Mobile's 3G uses a ~1700MHz frequency to upload and a ~2100MHz frequency to download, this is the '1700MHz band', also referred to as 'AWS' or 'UMTS band IV'.
Compare this to the '2100MHz band' ( or 'UMTS band I') which uses a frequency of ~1900MHz to upload and a frequency of ~2100MHz to download. The two are not cross-compatible.
The LT15i supports the 2100MHz band but not the 1700MHz band, so no 3G on T-Mobile.
If you don't believe me, feel free to read this thread on T-Mobile US's own site.
People with handsets that only support the 2100MHz band don't get 3G service.

You obviously know more about this than I do.
I do believe your first two statements are contradictory.

All other SE "I" version phones work with T-Mobile 3G, correct?

They never make anything the same. They may work or they may not. You should pay attention to every details of any product you are buying, no general rules existing with any product specially gadgets which they get a new technology everyday.

I can see why you might think that but it's not contradictory because band and frequency are not the same.
If we look at the specs for the Arc, it says says '3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100' (that's the LT15i, the line below is the frequencies supported by the LT15a).
Those numbers refer to UMTS bands I and VIII as listed here.
As you can see from the page on Wikipedia, every band operates on two different frequencies, one for uploading and one for downloading. This is to avoid interference.
So even though the download frequencies of the 1700 band and the 2100 band are the same, the two bands are not compatible as the upload frequencies are different (sorry for all the underlining, it just makes it easier to explain...).
It would be a lot simpler if each band's upload and download frequencies were distinct, it would be far less confusing but I guess there's some sort of reason why things are the way they are...

I don't think so, not unless they say they support the 1700/AWS band.
Basically, unless a phone's specs say it supports 1700MHz for 3G (or mentions AWS support, which means the same thing), it should be assumed that it won't give you 3G on T-Mobile US.
Though this all starts to become even more confusing when local roaming agreements are factored in but I don't really know anything about that to be honest.

They're not.
The merger hasn't even been approved yet, let alone any sort of migration of customers.
If the merger is approved, you're talking anywhere from 1 year to 3 before you see any real-world differences like the ones you're suggesting.
...um...I am doom-ed then..
I read their press and their said the deal wont close until the end of the year
Assuming the regulators allow it to go ahead at all.
There are, rightly so, concerns about a single national GSM-based network and the knock-on effect that would have on competition.

I would check what you have it set to under phone options, dail *#*#4636#*#*, and check what band you have selected, as well as correct APN settings.

AT&T is using 1900 MHz (850 MHz in some markets) for 3G. T-Mobile will use 1700 MHz for download and 2100 MHz for upload or pretend I didn't say anything and keep trying something that isn't doable. that's your call
like jay says it doesn't have the correct network band antennas,
just sell it, new smartphones are coming out weekly.

I hate to burst your bubble but there is no way you are going to get the AT&T device to work on T-Mobile's 3G, nevermind "4G"/HSPA. Sorry.
right... It has to do with the phone and the hardware... aka - the stuff they build the phone with. Its like if you try to use a phone to receive xm radio frequencies... it's not going to work... If you have a phone with the ATT bands they will NEVER work the same on Tmobile. But you can get Edge on any GSM network. Hope this helps. Search for att cellular bands on Google and compare them with Tmobile cellular bands.
Sorry to say it but the guys are correct! ALL of the AT&T 4G phone are quad band GSM phones! They work on the 850/1900 frequencies for all data and communication purposes in the USA! T-Mobile uses 1700! So basically you should have done a little more homework before you ran out and spent all that money!

They use 1700 and 2100 (both are required by the phone).
http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/...dts-seven-year-umts-roaming-agreement-gets-d/
What that basically does is TMO and ATT will SHARE the spectrum, meaning their phones have to have the same bands, and you guys know that ATT gets most of the cool phones and TMO usually gets nothing but Galaxy S series as its top of the line phone.
That's really good news, i actually like it.

I honestly can't answer that, but just opinion wise, i think thats a no. International phones have different bands than that of ATT or TMO, but if ATT gets a phone that we don't (iphone) we SHOULD be able to use it.
They aren't sharing spectrum, they have a roaming deal. Which is totally different.
T-Mobile has had some nice phone though, didn't we have the first dual core? The Sensation, Amaze, G2X, and SGS2 are all top of the line.
Just curious though, wouldn't this mean that At&t's already terrible data speeds will become worse, since more people will be using the same spectrum?

Most of the current international phones are compatible with ATTs 2100 mhz HSPA+ network. Not LTE though. But i think what this new arrangement is to use ATT towers only for roaming where tmobile towers are not available. All t mobile phones do support the 2100 band, so that makes sense. But Att phones cannot work on tmobile 3G/HSPA+ 850 mhz band.

Yep. I wouldn't go buying an AT&T device just yet. They're not merging their networks. They're just letting TMo customers use their network in some areas. This isn't a full frequency overlap of the companies' networks as the OP is implying.

That's their own spectrum and has nothing to do with AT&T.
Just got out of chat with Tmo online chat with rep. I was told that the Pittsburgh area is online with the 1900 mhz spectrum and that all gsm phones with the bands should work regular. I have also checked the Fcc maps and another map I found in another forum which i will post soon as i find the link again. Anyways, here is a copy of the chat with the rep:
Thank you for choosing T-Mobile. A representative will be with you shortly.
Welcome to T-Mobile online sales support, how may I help you with your purchase today?
Jillian: I'm more than happy to assist you. Can I ask for your name please?
You: Yes, I have a few questions regarding your network in my home region of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Jillian: Can I know your zip code?
You: 15140
You: I am a current Sprint customer and I plan on porting over two lines
You: I am trying to find out if my area has hspa working on the 1900 mhz spectrum yet?
Jillian: We have an excellent network at Your home region.
You: I have done a little research and it appears that T-mobile owns some of this spectrum licensed here throughout Pittsburgh.
Jillian: For which phone are you asking that?
You: I am interested in buying an unlocked Samsung Note from manafacturer and would like to add to value plan when we start service.
You: However it does not have the 1700 mhz band
Jillian: Let me check it for you, please allow me a minute.
You: but apparently you guys have been refarming 3g over to 1900 mhz in order for Lte deployment.
You: Thank you.
You: That way I can purchase my perfect phone with no worry about 4g
Jillian: Please hold for a minute.
You: sorry
Jillian: Thank you for waiting. As I've checked that we have the 1900 spectrum band for hspa in Pittsburgh and the Samsung Galaxy Note works on the 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 spectrum bands.
You: Yes, Thank you so much as this was the hardest to find. Thank you so much!
Jillian: Would you like to go with your purchase of the value plans now online and want to port your number as well?
You: Not yet, waiting on paycheck today and will be going to store to port numbers. This is due to the fact that I would need to get the phone before porting so we are not without service. But thank you as you were a huge help.
Jillian: It's okay. I hope, I have answered all your questions?
You: Yes, and this is a for sure thing though. Not to second guess you. I just would hate to pay so much for the device and not get the good speeds. But with that being said, you guys just got two guaranteed longterm customers. Keep up the good work! Thanks
Jillian: Thank you for choosing T-Mobile. Have a great day. We value your feedback, please click on the "End Chat" button to provide us your views on your chat experience today.
Now this is from tmobile themselves. Are there anyone out there that can confirm this? It covers the whole western and most of the east part of Pennsylvania.
Goodbye Sprint and your Sh*tty switch and baits! Tmo here I come.

Cause they're let is slower than Tmobile here and a lot cheaper. Plus my note get hSpa+ with t-mobile anyway. Cheaper. Wif calling at home, work, and school means clearer less dropped calls. Plus, i got option of 49 dollar plan. On top of that within phone I can go to any gsm carrier in Us post or prepaid and get full functionality. I have more control now!

Who uses enough data to be throttled? I have 5 GBs of 4g data, and never use more than 3. Unless you want to replace your ISP with your wireless carrier, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

You also have to worry about the fact T-mobile has limited 1900mhz spectrum around the USA, so if you travel you will be stuck on EDGE service, what sucks about this, is that you won't be able to roam on AT&T's 3G/HSPA+ until you are out of T-mobile's EDGE coverage.
Just my $0.02

But there's lots of 1700/2100 spectrum, 1900 is just so we can get 3G/4G from AT&T where we only have EDGE.

I just got back from visiting Pittsburgh, and unfortunately I have to report I was not able to receive any 3G spectrum from tmobile on my unlocked iPhone 4. Hopefully it's just a matter of time before t-mobile brings out the 1900mhz 3G frequency. So save your money for now and hold off on buying phone that doesn't support tmobiles 1700/2100 frequencies. EDGE isn't all that bad for web/email and I can even manage to watch low quality YouTube videos on my iPhone 4 (as YouTube videos are turned down to low quality automatically on the iPhones built in YouTube app while streaming over EDGE/3G), but for tethering, Netflix, downloading apps/music, it will feel terribly SLOW IMO. Please tmobile bring out the 1900mhz frequencies!!!!
Matt
