I plan on getting a Nexus 7 in a few days, and I am wondering if rooting the Nexus 7 is possible and if it would not void my warranty. I'm not bad with Android though, because I rooted my Galaxy Exhibit and installed CM9 By Jocala on it. Any reply would be appreciated.
A simple Google search should answer your question.
Yes it's possible.
Yes it will void your warranty but it's easy to get back to stock if you need to return it.

Hey guys any advice on what to do first?
Root or not root? Custom ROM or stock?
or just any suggestions in general?
Ballistics case should be here next week too.
Thnx

Immediately unlock bootloader so you don't have to wipe all your stuff when you finally decide to root, or flash a custom ROM. At least I wish I did.

I was a little unsure at first whether out not I would miss my s3. Six weeks later I don't.

Stock. Unless you are a flash junkie, stock is amazing. CM10 is nice I'm sure, but stock just plain works and is fast as hell. I'm still stock on n7 even. Google knows what they are doing (for the most part)

Thanks guys, I'm really loving phone.
I was thinking of keeping it stock, just like my N7, but definitely I'm going to follow your advice and unlock bootloader, I know I'm not gonna stay too long without root for sure.
Thnx again!
What is google's stance on rooting the nexus family? Will they take a nexus 7 back that is bricked by rooting?
Google itself doesn't do the repairs, I think Asus does. There's no such thing as "bricked" by simply rooting. Besides, if a device is actually bricked with no signs of life, they won't be able to identify what caused it.
If you tell them that you've modified it in some way, they may try to deny you service. That's why you don't tell them.

It hard to say what their stance is on rooting the Nexus family. They make it so easy to root it's like they want us to do it or know that developers will do it. It's so easy to root that you don't even need a toolkit to do it.
Chances of bricking? If you follow all the instructions carefully, you won't run into a brick...wall. (Get it? Lol)

Hi everyone, I've searched all over the forums for this and can't find anything that relates to this, so I'm really really sorry if this ends up as a double post!
I'm wanting to root my Nexus 4, but I have no idea if it voids the warranty? I bought it Sim Free in the UK from the Google Play Store itself. Sorry for the noob question!
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

If you turn in the phone for repair and they discover it is rooted and they can relate the damage to custom software they can/will deny warranty.
It should be okay as long as you send the phone back unrooted and bootloader re-locked for warranties repairs. There aren't any way they can check if you have unlocked and rooted the phone or not.

So yesterday evening I sent in my Nexus 4 to get a replacement due to my battery dying on me out of no where. The phone was rooted with aokp installed. I tried everything to try and boot it up and get it into fast boot to unroot but there was no luck there. So my question is have any nexus 4 owners that have had to get an RMA send there's in rooted? If so was Google able to get your phone up therefore causing you to pay for the replacement?

every device that ive ever sent back to google to get rma'd has been bootloader unlocked, root, custom rom/kernel. never a problem. last one was my nexus 7, stopped charging. generally, if its hardware related, theyll take care of it.

It's a Nexus..
I highly doubt Google will notice or care.. :good:
I don't see you having an issue it's a hardware fault.

At least 1 person has already been denied RMA because they unlocked the bootloader, so they care.

I find that rather odd... I wonder if there was more to the story..
In the past I have sent Google unlocked, rooted, and custom ROM'd Nexus 7, a Galaxy Nexus, and a Nexus 10...
Never heard a peep from them..

I can't find the thread (guy probably deleted it) but basically the guy told the rep he unlocked the phone and he was then referred to some other department that then denied his RMA.

Say that I got approved for a RMA and when they receive my phone they don't spot any problem? Will I need to pay the full price of the new phone they send to me?

I am not one to root my phone so and tinker with warranty for the first year. However, having these two buttons as seen on the S5 will be a huge annoyance but one I may have to live with. Does anyone know if the Rogers S5 or Note 4 have this right out of the box, no settings to disable/hide it? TIA!

LOL anyone paranoid to root their phones shouldn't be posting on XDA. Root and your problems are solved. I root first day and never have any problems.

Does rooting your phone not void your warranty where you are?
I can root a device before I even get it thanks to this forum, losing warranty to root is what keeps me paranoid.

I rooted a note 3, broke the screen and took it into Samsung, they asked if I rooted it and I acted dumb, they fixed screen for free here in Mississauga. Root, you're golden.
