Factory reset / root and backup questions? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my nexus is acting really weird, apps closing, everything is slow.
So I'm going to factory restore and had a few questions:
1) I'm rooted - Does root remain after a factory reset?
2) FPSE - I have some save states in FPSE that I'd like to keep - Where are these stores?
3) Titanium backup - I've run the backup, but should I move the files from sdcard?
Anything else I should know before hitting the reset button?

Also, once the factory reset is done, will I need to do anything to "re-root"?

One more question - I just ran Titanium Backup and the files were backed up to /sdcard/Titanium Backup.
However, when I connect the NExus to my Mac, in the android file transfer program I only see 2 files in that directory, while in ES File Explorer I see all of them.
Will the /sdcard get erased during a factory reset?

Backup/Restore

Anyone else have issues with the OE backup not restoring? Been trying to restore a few different backups over the last few days with no success. Have been running one over two hours now. Oy! Does the OE file just not work?
you should try super manager, do a All to smbk file ..and restore that and see what result you get..
Is there any way to restore from the OE folder? How do you access it?
I've have Dex's mod1.41, cannot access market after having done the 2-24 Elocity FW update, tried a data wipe and cache clear after doing a backup, and cannot restore that backup. Help!!!
Do not use the software from elocity site, go to link and download all four files from Dexter...
I never use that OE to do any backup..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890042
Thanks Tumpy, much appreciated.
Just a quick update for any newbies that come across this. Do NOT (I repeat) do NOT, use the factory backup/restore functions in settings menu. Get an outside file manager (I used Appkik, Super Manager works great, File Manager is good) to handle backup and restore. If you use the factory backup in the settings menu, and do a reset, wipe or cache clear, you lose that backup. Gone. I learned the hard way.

[Q] How to save before factory reset

Hi,
I don't know where I could ask this so I did it there... move the topic if it's not the good place, thanks.
I want to know on a STOCK (no root, no custom firmware) before a factory reset how to keep all savegame and datas from GAMES somewhere (like a SDCard or else)
because last time I did a factory reset I had to restart all from the start...
- Download all data for games (couples of megabytes)
- Restart all from level 1
Is there any application can help, or method ?
-----------------------------
seems possible to save with ADB
-----------------------------
DunDef :
Backup: adb pull /sdcard/DunDef/ sdcard/DunDef/
Restore: adb push sdcard/DunDef/ /sdcard/DunDef/
*************
but... I think need to be rooted to see all files for others and can push and pull all.
Note:
All method are welcome but I do prefer the genuine one.
Thanks by advance.

Titanium Backup can backup all apps+data and restore back to new ROM even freeze bloatware without delete it
But you will need to be root
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&feature=search_result
I just want backup the "save and data" from game, nothing else...
what folder have to be saved, how to get them back.
let say I want get my tablet like first day, then just reinstall freshly games, and play back right where I was before reset.
Not restore applications, datas, etc...
But I will check about this application anyway.
Thanks.
You don't have access to those files w/o root.
titanium backup do it best.. of course with root, but u can use mybackup pro.. i think it dont require root...
There is a free in the market called "favorite games backup." Not sure what games you're playing but that's what I use for Angry Birds...FYI it backs up to your SD card so it will survive a factory reset. Hope this helps.
Actually I find where was the saves...
they are hidden in data/data/... need to be root for read this directory.
do you have a direct link to the market of the favorite games backup application
I just searched in market for it and can't find it. Might not be compatable with honeycomb or might have been pulled. Can someone confirm...is it ok for me to post .apk if its a free app? I would be happy to do so.

Preferred backup/restore method?

Hello Everyone,
I fully expect to blow up my phone again tonight screwing around with the bands.
Before I do a full reset, can anyone recommend how to easily backup/restore the Note:
My restore process last time was:
<After factory reset>
1) Root the phone:
Turn on Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging
Turn on Settings -> Applications -> unknown sources
Run the Zergrush script to root
< This assumes you have done it before and have everything set up already - see other threads for setting up zergrush if you haven't rooted your phone before.>
2) Install Titanium backup root
Restore all apps+System Data
3) Delete and re-place all widgets <---This sucks! How can I avoid this?!!?
4) Run Apps that load their own data when you first run them.
(I suspect this can be avoided if you backup/restore the /sdcard directory)
Other side notes:
I could swear Titanium backup did not correctly restore the s-memo data.
I see the correct 'number' of s-memos, but 90% of them were blank.
I had to do more junk, but I suspect I just hadn't done a titanium backup
Anyway, if anyone can give me any suggestions regarding #3 or #4 that would be appreciated.
- Frank
I've personally never used it, but doesn't nandroid just make an entire backup of the internal flash chip? Kind of like ghost imaging a computer hard drive?
Don't restore all apps+System Data. Only do restore all apps.

+1, otherwise you will copy system data of your old phone in the Note. This will result with many bugs n lags...

Restore missing app + data is gud option
b'coz ne preinstalled app may not overwrite with this
flash a ROM with CWM then use it to make a nandroid backup.

Just found out that if you open and edit a note the content re-appears - so it is saved and restored with Titanium, but has to be recreated from the dataset. I have so many memos that I wish there was a quicker way to restore them than to open each one.

How to back-up unrooted device?

Hey guys, I'm trying to root my Desire HD with AAHK.
The problem is, it says that I'll need to downgrade and downgrading will wipe my data.
Now I don't have a problem with downgrading, but I'd like to keep my data.
So I was wondering WHAT data will it wipe and how do I back-up?
I have titanium back-up installed but it needs root access, so that won't work.
I've copied all the files on my SD card to my laptop, to keep my images and stuff...
Is there a way to back-up other important files (if there are any?) before rooting?
Thanks in advance!

Consider purchasing Titanium Backup. It just started letting you backup app data WITHOUT root using ADB. See: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...-adb-backups-without-root-other-improvements/. It will also very much come in handy once you are rooted.

Ooh, good to know. I hadn't tried it; I just saw the bit about ADB backup.
Files and documents are stored on your SD, just copy that out.
What you do lose are all your apps, app data, accounts, desktop layout, etc. If you use a custom launcher (go, adw), then chances are the app supports backup. It's like having a factory reset, or like when you first got your phone. Nothing on it. the SD card isn't effected though. There's a small chance rooting will corrupt your SD card. You can always format it to make it working again, but you loose all your data.
I use a program called Android Commander. Allowing inter alia copies of APK's. So, I have created a folder on my SD with programs and then use a clean reinstall of the rom, added applications. So just lose data and accounts.
App manager pro, download it from play store, and backup all your app's

Try to use MyBackup Pro or Safe Backup. But anyway, you should know, data loss while rooting is inevitably. For example, your settings for email accounts, desktop layout and other data, stored inside system memory will be lost. Using semi-backup application (without root) will save for you all important information (SMS, Calls log, Contacts and Applications). I think there's no problem with downgrading and losing system data. After rooting process and installing a custom rom you will be able to restore your settings by manual assignment - this is very easy

Backup game data before factory reset

My battery died whilst some apps were updating and ever since I have been getting a lot of crashes and various other problems.
So I'm thinking of doing a factory reset but I have a couple of questions:
I have used the nexus root toolkit to make backups before but can anyone tell me if this backs up game data such as progress and in particular, in-app purchases?
Does restoring from this backup restore app settings or just put the apps back on?

Although it back ups the apps etc I had a few issues using the backup tool it was telling me to install apps and that info was missing etc. So the best thing to do is plug your unit into an PC and drag the file data (Android/data) onto your desktop, this way once you have factory reset and done your back up you can drag that file back onto your device and you will have all game progress saved. If you have an emulator installed some of the Memory cards are hidden in the file system meaning you will have to find them in FPse or whatever you use and back them up as well, to be honest I just use root browser and email them to myself :good:
Ugh! Pretty gutted now.
Decided to cover all bases. Did a regular backup using the toolkit. Did another backup with all the shared data using the toolkit and manually copied the data to my computer as suggested above.
After the factory reset I restored the full backup with shared data. Although some games have retained settings, some haven't and NONE have any of the in-app purchase stuff.
So copied back all the data I copied to PC and still nothing.
As an example, Bad Piggies HD. My son bought a load of in-app stuff after the PIN was reset (without my knowledge) and none of the stuff is there and all levels are locked again.
<EDIT>
Tsk! I've now discovered that the restore has only restored about half my apps, let alone settings!
