So basically I installed cm10 on my Nexus 7 and I am very dissapointed from the Rom's Performance.. I would rather go back to Stock. However I have a few questions.
- How can I attain similar functionality to the On Demand CPU governor?
- Will CWM work fine using a rooted stock ROM?
- How do I apply the OTA updates on a Rooted device with CWM installed? Last time I tried, I went to the CWM boot screen and the update didn't happen.
- Will I lose flash/stock browser functionality after applying the Update and will I have to repeat the same process each time?
Thanks!

Before you go back to stock, I recommend trying Paranoid Android. It's very smooth on my Nexus 7 and the performance is great. Plus Paranoid gives you the option of hybrid, tablet, or phone mode for every app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800268
I haven't used the On Demand CPU governor, but I know kernels like Franco or Motley come with clockspeed and volt controls for your device.
CWM worked fine for me on stock ROM while rooted.
Use RootKeeper to apply OTA updates while rooted. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&hl=en

Yeah, i'm stock rom fans too, performance are always better in stock. Flash back Stock and install the mothley kernel, this will allow you to overclock up to 1600Mhz. And to manage cpu frequency and all that stuff, get SetCPU on the market

So how do I get back? Can I just use the nexus toolkit? I dont have the stock image anymore
I'd just suggest getting setcpu from the market. If the toolkit doesn't have the stock ROM, I'm sure some thread around here will
you can go back to stop with the root tool kit
CWM and google updates.. YOU will not be able to install the official updates thru cwm.. You could flash back to stock recovery do the update and then flash cwm back. i do this on my Huawei cell phone..
But with this being a nexus device.. Soon after google sends a update . Someone will port it to be install-able thru cwm .You may have to wait a few days or week..
This is the best bet... just wait and install the cwm version of the update.
Being a unlocked nexus device gives you options not found on most other devices with much less Dev. support.. I have been very lucky with both my tablets .. The Acer a500 is still rocking with DEV.. With its new non acer dual boot boot loader to all the roms. Even a cm 10 beta..
Its kinda a given with this device to have such support . but did not expect it with the acer...

This doesn't even matter, all the devs have the official ota update before it comes out due to Google dropping the source before they actually push it out.
Way better to root, you'll have the updates faster that way.

IF you do only one thing, unlock the bootloader before getting lived in on the device. I am rocking stock rooted myself. I am just watching till after cm10.1 hits stable then Ill try some roms out
While I personally prefer stock (with modifications of course) on my N7, it is trivial to revert these devices back to stock, or any other ROM, if you want to. You don't even need to revert and upgrade - you could just download the latest FULL image and flash your device that way, skipping the update step altogether.
But if updates are your only concern, I imagine most of the ROM developers would incorporate the new version into their ROMs very soon after the OTA drops.

This.
Even if you don't run a custom rom initially, if the bootloader is unlocked, you can easily flash a custom recovery and rom later. The problem is that if you unlock all the internal storage gets wiped which is not the end of the world if you backup first but it's still a minor inconvenience.

paranoid is great, but depends what you like. I love it fit the tablet interface and customization options. stock 4.2 had a lot of the same customization built in, so it's awesome as well.

To me, its custom ROM or bust.
-Sent from Marino's Nexus 7-
Multi ROM
you may want to use Multi ROM.
Root your stock ROM.
Install Custom Recovery to install Multi ROM.
After installing Multi ROM, you may now install other or more ROMs inside.
Also, you have the option to auto-boot from stock ROM or from other ROM.
With that, you may access your stock ROM without removing your custom ROMs and vice versa.
Goodluck!
I unlocked and rooted my nexus 7 so that I could use otg cable---> a flash drive … I have extra storage now. Just download an app called stick mount an your all set...
Rooting should be the first thing you should do. As others said you can keep it stock if you want. Only difference is you get to install apps like titanium backup and file managers like root explorer. You also will have a custom recovery so you can backup your latest STABLE and smooth ROM so you can revert back if you ever run into trouble like the 4.2 OTA debacle.
As far as any maintenance and fixing issues... having root makes it a breeze as factory resets just mean in 10 minutes you are back in businesses, you just need redo your screens.
I took the plunge and after rooting I installed this: [EXPERIMENTAL] MultiROM v3
Now I'm running stock along with a few other ROMS, including Ubuntu.
Hi,
I know there is a lot of comments about why root nexus 4. The reason for me is that I know there is a lot of small fixes which i can install (battery kernel... I think i can install just to rooted phpne) but for me the main thing is that I know in time I will get very lazy about installing new roms. I have htc desire and last time i installed new rom year ago. The same with my xoom.
So my question is, if i root my phone, will i be abble to update original rom just by going to settings-about-update? It doesnt work on my desire and xoom. But i installed unoficial roms there. But if i just want to unlock the phone for little fixes and still be able to get updates from google... Is that possible?
Sorry if it is stupud question,...
Thx

I believe that OTA updates just flash the stock kernel again, so you could unlock, root and flash a different kernel without fear of losing OTA updates. However, OTA updates will force you to lose root and you will have to flash the custom kernel again. You will continue to get notifications that say that there is a new update as long as you aren't also on a custom ROM
If you are running the stock ROM you will still get and ota notification. However if you've made any modifications such as a custom kernel, build.prop edit, system.ui edit, etc. The ota will fail upon installation.
If all you do is get root access it will install fine. You'll just have to flash the su binaries again.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Actually, SU has a survival mode that will preserve root even after OTA. CWM will also protect ropt so you don't have to reroot it. My Nexus 7 has been stock rooted and went thru 2 OTAs without losing root.

Sorry to hijack,
My question is, I am rooted with stock rom but have CWR and a different kernel.
When the next OTA comes, I would need to download the whole rom because of CWR and kernel.
Question I have is that if I want to flash the OTA, would I need to wipe my device or can I just flash the ROM ontop. I know my old device (DHD) I had to wipe everything before I install the ROM. The reason why I am asking is because can I get away with just flashing on top therefore keeping all my data on my device so I no need to restore it via titanium backup (I am lazy)
Hey there, I have been flashing my HTC Desire HD for a long time with different ROMs. I found it kinda annoying to always check certain websites for new updates, manually download and flash them just to find out that half of the stuff was buggy.
Now I got the Nexus 4. I loved the idea of having fast OTA updates. But now I want to flash a new kernel.. which means I got to install a custom recovery. But then OTA will not work anymore.
So I wonder:
Should I stay with
CWM + Stock ROM + Custom Kernel (no OTA update but no problem with buggy custom ROMs)
CWM + Custom ROM + Custom Kernel
Everything stock
Cyanogenmod is nice but for me it doesn't have any big advantages over stock 4.2 ? So I really wonder what you guys would recommend? What are your reasons to do a "certain setup" ?
Thanks
You don't need a custom recovery to flash a kernel.
It can be flashed with fastboot leaving everything else stock.
You still wouldn't be able to install the OTA without flashing the stock kernel again though.
Oh crap.. so as soon as I change ANYTHING... no OTA updates anymore
Hmm... I guess I will stay with custom kernel + flashing stock ROM then :/ Is there any way to automatically check for updates tho?
Thanks

Yeah you will get the notification and it will try to install but it will fail and reboot if you aren't 100% stock.

+1, TWRP is great :highfive:
TWRP is the way to go!
But then I have another problem (well I already have it but..):
I would like to use ROMmanager.. after all it might be able to check for rom updates & flash them "automatically" (stock + custom?). I am not sure if it could also check for kernel updates?
Anyway, it seems to work only with CWM ? Altough it doesn't seem the already installed CWM on my Nexus 4 :S
Anyone?
I would never use ROM manager. Not a good program. Use a custom recovery, and if you want lots of customisation then I would recommend AOKP Rom as it is just as fast and stable as the stock ROM but with a whole host of customisation options.
Beauty of this phone is that you can go back to complete bone stock with no issues, I did, but missed all the customisation and put AOKP back on lol.
alright I uninstalled it. I just hoped for some "app" which could look for all kind of "custom" updates and install them automatically (kernerl,rom,...)
If you're interested in CM, I think delta CM will allow you download only the changes made to the project.
Also, why do people say to use TWRP instead of the more tried and true CWM? It seems to have a lot of sex appeal to some recently, and there doesn't seem to be a clear cut answer. Is there added functionality?
Just for curiosity, I have a stock nexus and my lasts phones I usually rooted to actualize with new rom, because always them was behind. Our phone is been actualized stock software until now, and I want to know from who rooted their nexus which benefits can u see of root our nexus 4?
P.s: if moderators not see that is a relevant post , can delete, just let know me first.
Thanx

Benefits are the same. After rooting you can install cutom roms. You get better battery life, USB fast charger, App opps, UI customization etc. But you will not get direct updates from Google.
So I just flashed stock image 5.1.1 and my battery life really took a hit. What custom rom has the best battery life these days? I am definitely not a power user, I just want long battery life.

Almost agree except for "After rooting you can install cutom roms". Rooting has nothing to do with custom roms. In order to flash a custom rom you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader
Back to topic, I root my device to get my freedom. There are noumerous apps (wich I use) that require a rooted device. So, for me no root, no joy.
cheers

You can try SimpleAOSP Rom by snakeater. Install Hellscore Kernel or modified Semaphore kernel by Snakeater. Use conservative governer with touch boost to get better battery life.
i am looking for a rom for my nexus 7 2012 which i can overclock and root please help.
You can root any firmware, all you need for that is a custom recovery like TWRP to insert the super-user utility into the system partition.
Many firmware images have SU built-in, you just need to enable it somewhere in the system configuration. In CyanogenMod's case, enabling SU for ADB-only, apps-only, neither or both is an option under the Developers menu.
Not sure for overclocking. Cyanogen used to have some overclocking controls but they did not seem to work right and appear to have been removed in the more recent builds - at least I cannot find the options anywhere on my N7. With SU installed though, there should be a few ways to circumvent the lack of a GUI to mess with clock settings.

Get CM13 and install Daniel_hk's kernel for OC
If you want a custom ROM that is super smooth and simple then you should definitely give Slimkat 4.4.4 a try.Ever since i upgraded to Lolipop my Nexus 7 had become slow and laggy but Slimkat has brought the fast and slick experience back to my tablet.
