Hi,
I'm quite eager to get the nexus 7. I do have a few questions though. Firstly, I'm planning to use it to word processing and some reports on the way home. The issue I have is that the nexus 7 doesn't have Polaris Office which is what I really want to use. Is there any way to get it and how do the alternativies stack up? Its essentials that I'm able to make and edit word 2007 documents. Secondly, is the screen big enough to do so? It seemed ok to me but just want people's opinions. Thirdly, I've heard its very rooter friendly but lets say I root.. Is it possible to get Polaris Office.. Also, any idea about when the free google play credit offer is till? This is something I really want. Lastly, I've heard there are going to be some keyboard cases for the nexus 7 but is there one already?
Thanks
Sean
Personally I wouldn't dream of using this thing for work. If you want a tab for working too you can't beat the Asus Transformer range in my opinion. This thing is clearly aimed at media consumption and does not lend itself to productivity.
But! That's just my opinion. Yours might differ. My advice is try one out for a couple of hours first. You might hate it, or love it.
You can buy Polaris office can't you? You also could use Google drive

You can't get it on the play store.. Also google drive is for storing stuff.. I need to use my tablet to edit stuff.. I have an S3 which has Polaris office but can't find it anywhere for the gaalxy nexus.. I seriously want it since its a bloody good software and the best out there..
Just look online for the APK or use your Google play store credit when you buy the tablet.

Google docs is built into drive now actually, so yeah you can create stuff and store stuff, as well as edit word documents from your pc

I haven't tried any office suites to edit things on the run, but I do use it regularly through the Citrix Receiver connection to our work servers, and that works well, so, unless you need larger DPIs or anything like that, it will be fine for business stuff.
Unfortunately, it seems that Polaris Office is licensed as OEM only on certain devices. So we cant provide any links to apks or anything, as it would be classed as warez.
Check out this thread h t t p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085173 (Sorry, still cant post links), it compares the different Android office apps.

With a BT keyboard the Nexus 7 would work fine for editing documents. I'd suggest checking out Google Drive before purchasing a suite of office software, though. Give it a go on your PC and phone, see how it works for you and make a decision from there.

What's that suppose to mean? Why don't you use google play store? There's lots of free apps on there. The play store is the best feature of android. Also asking for pirated sites are against forum rules.

Just pull the apk from your S3 and move it to other devices. Profit.
I'm pretty sure I have polaris office backed up in titanium backup from my flyer, as I backed up everything, copied it to my PC, then wiped so I could send it off to the eBay buyer. Dunno how well it would work though as the flyer was honeycomb

How exactly would I do that? Sorry but I've only had android for 2 weeks lol.
Thanks
Sean
Well you'll need root access on your s3 to do it. Obtaining root is different on every device so you'll have to check the s3 forums for info on how to do that and then you'll need a file explorer such as root explorer to access the files. You'll need to navigate to system/apps and the apk file will be in there. Talk the mount button on top of the screen to mount the folder and read / write, then copy it, paste it in your sd folder, and then plug the s3 in the PC, pull the file off, and then copy it on to your sd card on your nexus 7. Disconnect, make sure "install from unknown sources" is checked in settings, and navigate to the file using a file explorer, tap on it and it should install it like any other app

So, this tablet is a great purchase don't get me wrong but the more I play with it the more I see force closing, freezing, and lag. Just not as snappy as my phone. My question is, is it the tablet or is it jellybean? I know jellybean is brand spankin new, so could this be the reason why these apps are force closing? Facebook and ALL browsers I've tried are the worst. And also for some reason it freezes a lot just when I go to my settings. Very annoying waiting for the simple stuff. Let me know if I'm the only one please. Thanks

Im the opposite way. all my apps run smoothly. I may get a bit of lag once in a blue moon but it doesnt bother me. Chrome is also very quick too.
Well if you ask Rovio, it's jelly beans fault. I asked them about Amazing Alex not being available and got:
"Unfortunately Nexus 7 can not be added to the compatible devices due to its non standard way of reading the game's manifest file. This is something we can not change, it's up to the device manufacturer and Operation System manufacturer."
Amazing Alex is running beautifully on my N7. Available from Amazon App Store, so that pretty much makes that last post a complete fabrication of fact.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I also thought that Amazing Alex being incompatible seemed weird given that it works on Tegra phones...
A load of applications just don't seem to be ready for high resolutions, and don't look right. Given that this device has truly taken off I imagine everyone will start to include 1280 layouts.
I'm grabbing stuff through the Play Store onto my Tab 2 7.0 and the using ROM Toolbox to make a backup, then sideloading the backup .apks on the N7. So far everything has worked just peachy. Probably my number one annoyance at this point with the device. (Previous number one annoyances were "Why is this thing so hard to root after the last OTA or is it my Tab 2 drivers getting in the way?", and after that it was "How in the world do I get Flash to work, why is Dolphin HD not working with Flash?")

You guys should email Rovio.
Amazon Appstore doesn't have strict device policies for apps, so that's why you were able to install it and find out it works fine.
The Play Store, developers have tons of settings for device policies on apps, so they can exclude some devices, or can automatically exclude some devices (and they don't even know that it did).

Rovio is the developer that created Angry Birds. Amazing Alex is from the developer Rovio.
Why is there yet another thread about app compatibility? Are these people all fresh and new to Android or something? Relax, the OS just launched, give it a few weeks - this is ridiculous now!
Even though YouTube app runs, it is indeed incompatible. Go to Play Store, you won't see it under your "Installed" list. You can't search it in Play store either (because it's incompatible with JB).
Is spotify supposed to be working? I ask as I cannot get the search feature to work at all and so am limited to playing my playlists only.
Amazing Alex HD plays fine here. The only game I found to run like crap is the Not-So-Amazing-Spider-Man.
-Its probably Tegra drivers and not Jelly Bean's fault.

I've purchased a fair number of applications I'd like to use on my N7 that are listed by the Play Store as incompatible, particularly Machinarium (which I'd really hoped to get into).
Of course a simple Google search of [application name] + apk + [rar/zip/mediafire/other obvious piracy related search terms] will likely get me what I want, but I'd really prefer not to go that route due to providence and, frankly, the fact that I paid for this, I'll figure out if it work or not.
Definitely have the SDK installed, definitely not very great at using it. Any help is well appreciated by my rain drenched weknd.
Are you rooted on your other Android device? You can use root explorer to pull the apks, then just dropbox/email them to the Nexus.
So... Download the app to a compatible device, go into the folder where they keep the app data, copy the apk go your sd card, and then email it or upload to dropbox.

Nice. I most definitely am. Cheers.

No problem! You should find most apks in the/data/app folder.
Some are hidden other places, so you may need to "search" the file name.

You don't even need to be rooted. You can backup apps with astro file manager and then find the apps in the backups folder and send them to dropbox or however else you wand to send them

firstly, i know that when i root my nexus 7 it will be like a factory restore/wipe.
when that happens any personal stuff like pictures disappears. will i lose the transformers film and books that came with it in the library or will it pick that back up when i sign back in to play store? i downloaded the transformers film for more stable playback rather than streaming, i guess i will have to re-download it wont i?
will rooting it cause the device to not receive any future updates over the air?
lastly, any recommendations for the best, 1-click, method as i have found a few when i googled it so not sure which is the best and/or easiest method.
thanks guys, marc

Hi mate,
I rooted within half an hour of having my nexus, and have been able to download the film again and all of the books that came with it.
To the rooting question. Yes, you can do over the air updates, however they will cause you to loose root. Your could simply use the program in the link below again to root. Or you could download OTA root keeper from the Play Store. This disables root and then you can enable it after the update has finished.
edit: I almost forgot, if you delete any files from the system part, you will not likely be able to use OTA to update. It needs all of the original files to proceed.
This is the program that I used below. It is very simple to use and walks you through every step. It also has a ton of options. I'd recommend using this one. I know its a big program, but it's worth it.

Have you tried alternate ROMs? If not, I'd recommend Paranoid Android. It's smooth, fast, stable, and it allows you to choose between phone, phablet, and tablet mode for every app.

I would argue that if you want to create directories and move files around, a file manager is the tool of choice, just as it is on a pc. Putting that functionality into every app that accesses files is redundant and unnecessary.
Yea that's always been kind of weird that you can't do that. I recently started using Dropbox to save all my photos which is nice. You can create folders on there to keep them organized! Also, you'll get extra space (500Mb) to store photos once you activate the auto-upload thing.
The WORST thing is picture messages from iPhone users. They all come to me in the STUPID slideshow format that sucks. You can't even zoom in on the pictures and I've noticed in particular with the Moto X that the play/pause buttons disappear. So now I have to wait the 15-20 seconds for the next slide to look at the pic. Does anyone know how to get rid of this? Other than the obvious of installing a different SMS/MMS app or using Hangouts? I prefer the stock application and this is the only gripe I have with it.

I am thinking like a computer user, who has used Finder (Mac), Explorer (Win), and File Browser (Linux) to manipulate files, and prefer one interface for it.
For me, the most compelling reason for Android IS user access to the file system. If you want all file management from within the apps that access those files, you're a prime candidate for iOS.
Not trying to be snarky about this, I simply prefer to use file management tools for file management, rather than seeing numerous interfaces from numerous apps, and the additional overhead they require.
This app helps, still not as elegant as the touchwiz version but it's OK

It may be built into Android in the future if users want it, but for the most part, core Android apps provide basic functionality. Manufacturers build on AOSP with their own software tweaks or go closed source with a specific software suite (most of Samsung's S-apps are redundant when Google offers the same apps).
This is kind of analogous to editing with MS Paint or Adobe Photoshop. You can do it in both, but one obviously has more features.
