Few questions relating to rooting - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

firstly, i know that when i root my nexus 7 it will be like a factory restore/wipe.
when that happens any personal stuff like pictures disappears. will i lose the transformers film and books that came with it in the library or will it pick that back up when i sign back in to play store? i downloaded the transformers film for more stable playback rather than streaming, i guess i will have to re-download it wont i?
will rooting it cause the device to not receive any future updates over the air?
lastly, any recommendations for the best, 1-click, method as i have found a few when i googled it so not sure which is the best and/or easiest method.
thanks guys, marc

Post in Q&A if you want a reasonable response.

Hi mate,
I rooted within half an hour of having my nexus, and have been able to download the film again and all of the books that came with it.
To the rooting question. Yes, you can do over the air updates, however they will cause you to loose root. Your could simply use the program in the link below again to root. Or you could download OTA root keeper from the Play Store. This disables root and then you can enable it after the update has finished.
edit: I almost forgot, if you delete any files from the system part, you will not likely be able to use OTA to update. It needs all of the original files to proceed.
This is the program that I used below. It is very simple to use and walks you through every step. It also has a ton of options. I'd recommend using this one. I know its a big program, but it's worth it.

web install question
I've tried searching but I guess my queries haven't been good ones. So, a quick noob question...
One of my favorite features of the Nexus 7 is browsing the Play store on my laptop and being able to just click install from there and the app 'magically' appearing on my tablet. If I root, will that ability go away?

I don't even have my n7 yet, and you helped me!

Nope. The magic still works the same way.

I'm also thinking about rooting my Nexus 7 Once I get it. I ordered it on Saturday and I'm still waiting

Why wouldn't you root it?

I rooted mine after unpacking it, wouldn't have it any other way now.
Everything you purchase (or google gives you, which is seen as a purchase) will stay purchased foreveryoi just download it again.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions from someone who lives and breathes nexus 7s.

Kindle Fire UK Root & Update?

Hi
I have been reading this forum today and haven't managed to find an answer that is 100% confirmed.
I am close to buying a Kindle Fire and live in the UK.
If I buy it can I unlock it with the Boritto unlock if it is version 6.2.2 or does it only work if I was in the US? I read something that suggests I need to be in the US to do this.
Also, is there a proven way for me to block Amazon from forcing an update to the device?
Many thanks

Assuming there is nothing stopping you from downloading burrito root I can't imagine what location would have to do with rooting it. I believe there are a few different methods that people have tried though I cannot speak to how well they work. Easiest way to guarantee amazon doesn't update it is to flash a non-amazon rom lol, but as I said others may know more regarding killing OTA
Really? So you think its as simple as putting a ROM on i.e. CM7, something that isn't stock and the update won't get through?
If so that sounds pretty simple...

Let's put it this way, I bought my kindle in late december; amazon pushed an update, I've never once seen
Flash cm9/cm7/miui once rooted. and you wont see updates from amazon.
Thanks guys that's really good news. It would be pointless for me to keep standard as I wouldn't get any amazon services being in the UK.
Next question, how are you finding the tablet with a flashed ROM, is it smooth running with no issues?

i bought my kindle preordered last november. in a couple of weeks (no custom rom atm) i just use stock rom with minimum tweak. as expected amazon market is useless even if we using us ID. apart of that, all went well until i installed custom rom; cm7. so far so good. i can run most of my fav apps, listening to music, hd video and other simple browsing and reading.
stock adw launcher is a tittle bit sluggish so i just use launcherpro which performing as it should without any hiccup.

Hi, I don't know if its me but that sounded a bit contradictory.
You're on stock ROM, all went well until you installed CM7 and so far so good?
Just so I am clear, you are not running CM7 you are standard with a launcher?

I lived in Saudi Arabia and I bought mine in December last year 2011. I rooted it and install CM7 just after I received it. Currently I am using CM9 (ics) in daily bases with no problem. For sure, I do have a complete backup of the original stock ROM, if I need to go back.

Even though you live outside U.S you can still enjoy the different amazon services like videos & app market search for "World Wide Kindle Fire" in the android market.
Those services are the added value of this device, don't give up on it .

Thanks I had never heard of that. So the unroot and root, how long would that take?
Also the reviews seem a bit mixed, lots saying or doesn't work. It must be problems with the server...

The unroot, root process takes less then a second...
The app use several different servers, so if one server doesn't work you can always switch to the next one... also you can enter your own proxy server manually.

Want to buy Nexus 7 but have some questions

Hi,
I'm quite eager to get the nexus 7. I do have a few questions though. Firstly, I'm planning to use it to word processing and some reports on the way home. The issue I have is that the nexus 7 doesn't have Polaris Office which is what I really want to use. Is there any way to get it and how do the alternativies stack up? Its essentials that I'm able to make and edit word 2007 documents. Secondly, is the screen big enough to do so? It seemed ok to me but just want people's opinions. Thirdly, I've heard its very rooter friendly but lets say I root.. Is it possible to get Polaris Office.. Also, any idea about when the free google play credit offer is till? This is something I really want. Lastly, I've heard there are going to be some keyboard cases for the nexus 7 but is there one already?
Thanks
Sean
Personally I wouldn't dream of using this thing for work. If you want a tab for working too you can't beat the Asus Transformer range in my opinion. This thing is clearly aimed at media consumption and does not lend itself to productivity.
But! That's just my opinion. Yours might differ. My advice is try one out for a couple of hours first. You might hate it, or love it.
You can buy Polaris office can't you? You also could use Google drive

You can't get it on the play store.. Also google drive is for storing stuff.. I need to use my tablet to edit stuff.. I have an S3 which has Polaris office but can't find it anywhere for the gaalxy nexus.. I seriously want it since its a bloody good software and the best out there..
Just look online for the APK or use your Google play store credit when you buy the tablet.

Google docs is built into drive now actually, so yeah you can create stuff and store stuff, as well as edit word documents from your pc

I haven't tried any office suites to edit things on the run, but I do use it regularly through the Citrix Receiver connection to our work servers, and that works well, so, unless you need larger DPIs or anything like that, it will be fine for business stuff.
Unfortunately, it seems that Polaris Office is licensed as OEM only on certain devices. So we cant provide any links to apks or anything, as it would be classed as warez.
Check out this thread h t t p://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085173 (Sorry, still cant post links), it compares the different Android office apps.

With a BT keyboard the Nexus 7 would work fine for editing documents. I'd suggest checking out Google Drive before purchasing a suite of office software, though. Give it a go on your PC and phone, see how it works for you and make a decision from there.

What's that suppose to mean? Why don't you use google play store? There's lots of free apps on there. The play store is the best feature of android. Also asking for pirated sites are against forum rules.

Just pull the apk from your S3 and move it to other devices. Profit.
I'm pretty sure I have polaris office backed up in titanium backup from my flyer, as I backed up everything, copied it to my PC, then wiped so I could send it off to the eBay buyer. Dunno how well it would work though as the flyer was honeycomb

How exactly would I do that? Sorry but I've only had android for 2 weeks lol.
Thanks
Sean
Well you'll need root access on your s3 to do it. Obtaining root is different on every device so you'll have to check the s3 forums for info on how to do that and then you'll need a file explorer such as root explorer to access the files. You'll need to navigate to system/apps and the apk file will be in there. Talk the mount button on top of the screen to mount the folder and read / write, then copy it, paste it in your sd folder, and then plug the s3 in the PC, pull the file off, and then copy it on to your sd card on your nexus 7. Disconnect, make sure "install from unknown sources" is checked in settings, and navigate to the file using a file explorer, tap on it and it should install it like any other app

ok...I'm officially bored. What tricks can I teach my N7?

So far I basically use this thing as a web browser, twitter reader and forum crawler.
Of course I rooted, themed, installed new kernels, bricked it, brought it back to life, and now I'm back to stock rooted.
So what else can this thing do? I bought a USB dongle thinger but I don't like watching movies on the small screen (I get headaches easy). Give me some ideas?

Have you tried alternate ROMs? If not, I'd recommend Paranoid Android. It's smooth, fast, stable, and it allows you to choose between phone, phablet, and tablet mode for every app.

If PA isn't your style, try Slimbean or Cyanogenmod 10.
There are a lot of ROMs out there to mess around with.

How about getting tablet mode by installing ROM Toolbox Lite and changing the DPI from 213dpi to 160dpi?

Games, news, geocaching (tether it to your phone via bluetooth), use it as a GPS on your bike/car if you have one (I use my phone for now, and you can cache the maps before hand too, so no data connection needed), control your DSLR camera if you have one, setup an andruino system/project and use the N7 as a remote, use it as universal remote in your home (friend is doing that w his Galaxy Tab 2 7"), etc.

to root or not to root

GF bought me a N7 for xmas (love abbreviations) and it was to upgrade from a kindle fire from previous.
I of course rooted the KF in about 5 minutes and its been running full android since first boot but with my N7 I almost feel I dont have to root for some reason. My NS phone is of course rooted but after setting up the N7 its almost so functional after that it seems to much work since rooting will wipe the device.
Anyway if you guys were in my position would you root or no?
If you need/use apps, that need root, yes you should ^^ if not, IMHO you don't need to, for me and my use (gaming, chatting, browsing, celebrating, xdaing) stock is very comfortable and nice.
It really depends on how you want to use it ^^ test stock for a few days and decide after testing

I didn't due to not having my laptop at time of purchase. While all is well and I don't need root for anything I have been thinking about rooting just because its a nexus and knowing I haven't modded it in the least is starting to semi bother me. However now I only have 8GB free on a 32GB version and really don't want to lose all my data. So I'd recommend it so you don't regret not doing it down the road.

Rooted can not play Movies :(

I think I am stuck but I wanted to make sure. I have done searching but all I can find is older posts. I just got my Nexus 7 and I installed CM10 last night. In searchig on other places then XDA I found this on Droid Forum. Might give this a try.
OTA Rootkeeper. Use this app to "hide" root from other apps. Then unhide root after watching movies so you have the advantages of being rooted. Might try this first.
I tried root apps and they failed. I use sky to stream tv and whatever method I tried to hide root the app always came back with your device is rooted. flixster may work with root hiders. Good luck!
