Rooted can not play Movies :( - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I am stuck but I wanted to make sure. I have done searching but all I can find is older posts. I just got my Nexus 7 and I installed CM10 last night. I just got the movie Ted and I got the digital version but it can only be played through Flixster / Ulterviolet. When I try to open their apps it see's my phone is rooted and will not allow me to play a video.
Is there any way around this? Would like to play Movies on my Nexus 7 but trying to figure out how to do it.
Thanks for any help.

thats their security, so no one will steal their movies. you can use google play movies. root, no problem

Well That stinks. Wish the was a way to use the OTG cable and not have to be rooted. I just do not want to have to pay for the movie again in the play store.

You can attempt a temp unroot, or see if somebody has released patches for those apps.

I had exactly the same issue as you did and I solved it using multirom. My internal Rom is rooted and one of my additional roms is stock google unrooted. When I want to watch movies i boot to the stock rom and I can watch films from flixster and guess what I also have Ted! Multirom is awesome.

In searchig on other places then XDA I found this on Droid Forum. Might give this a try.
OTA Rootkeeper. Use this app to "hide" root from other apps. Then unhide root after watching movies so you have the advantages of being rooted. Might try this first.

I tried root apps and they failed. I use sky to stream tv and whatever method I tried to hide root the app always came back with your device is rooted. flixster may work with root hiders. Good luck!

Ok just did this on my Infuse phone to give it a try. Both my Nexus 7 and Infuse are running CM10 roms. Flixster did not work with it rooted in my phone. I used OTA Rootkeeper and did the temp root on it and it worked on my phone!!!! Hope this will work on my Nexus 7 tonight. I do not see why it should not. This is perfect!

Yes I think it worked for me on flixster but some other streaming apps will still state root. Enjoy Ted!

Live TV Timewarner Cable ICS only

Credit for the APK goes to B00sted
In the android market (google play) there is a timewarner cable app that lets you watch live tv on your android device, but only if you have an ICS device and you are not rooted. YOU ALSO HAVE TO BE A TIMEWARNER CABLE INTERNET AND TELEVISION SUBSCRIBER. Well i found in the galaxy nexus forums someone changed the APK around to allow rooted devices. So now on my kindle fire I am watching live tv. FYI I am usuing GedeRom 3/15.
Link for the APK
http://www.mediafire.com/?pbtif3rpyuxpzyz
Also just to note, the original APK is free.
Credit for the APK and following info goes to B00sted and others on the thread.

I tested my AT&T Uverse app earlier today and it works as well on my KF as it does on my GNex. Pretty cool.
I don't know how lucky, it seems like half the time it's kinda laggy, could be a bandwidth problem on my part
When trying to launch I keep getting:
"We aplogize we're unable to fulfill your request at this time. Please try again later if the problem persists... etc"
Anyone else getting this right now?
Just tested mine and it worked fine. What steps did you use to set it up and sign in

Yea and from the other thread. very strange. I'M wondering if it's because the apartment I'm in doesn't currently have a cable package.

Yes I believe you have to have both a timewarner cable and internet subscription

It works but I noticed that you are using the phone .apk. I tried the tablet version on the original OP but it wouldn't work. Any idea why?
Oh and thanks for this, I've been waiting a long time for this feature.
Yeah I tried the tablet one too and I couldn't get it to work, not really sure why it didn't

OOh will try this later.

Few questions relating to rooting

firstly, i know that when i root my nexus 7 it will be like a factory restore/wipe.
when that happens any personal stuff like pictures disappears. will i lose the transformers film and books that came with it in the library or will it pick that back up when i sign back in to play store? i downloaded the transformers film for more stable playback rather than streaming, i guess i will have to re-download it wont i?
will rooting it cause the device to not receive any future updates over the air?
lastly, any recommendations for the best, 1-click, method as i have found a few when i googled it so not sure which is the best and/or easiest method.
thanks guys, marc
Post in Q&A if you want a reasonable response.

Hi mate,
I rooted within half an hour of having my nexus, and have been able to download the film again and all of the books that came with it.
To the rooting question. Yes, you can do over the air updates, however they will cause you to loose root. Your could simply use the program in the link below again to root. Or you could download OTA root keeper from the Play Store. This disables root and then you can enable it after the update has finished.
edit: I almost forgot, if you delete any files from the system part, you will not likely be able to use OTA to update. It needs all of the original files to proceed.
This is the program that I used below. It is very simple to use and walks you through every step. It also has a ton of options. I'd recommend using this one. I know its a big program, but it's worth it.

web install question
I've tried searching but I guess my queries haven't been good ones. So, a quick noob question...
One of my favorite features of the Nexus 7 is browsing the Play store on my laptop and being able to just click install from there and the app 'magically' appearing on my tablet. If I root, will that ability go away?
I don't even have my n7 yet, and you helped me!

Nope. The magic still works the same way.
I'm also thinking about rooting my Nexus 7 Once I get it. I ordered it on Saturday and I'm still waiting
Why wouldn't you root it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I rooted mine after unpacking it, wouldn't have it any other way now.
Everything you purchase (or google gives you, which is seen as a purchase) will stay purchased foreveryoi just download it again.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions from someone who lives and breathes nexus 7s.

What is this file being created?

Hey guys been looking for an answer but only found a thread on evo 3d forums that doesn't have much activity, anyways I keep getting this file created every hour or so and its really starting to scare me maybe spyware or something. Trying to figure out why and where its coming from. Also attached inside contents.

I would download Avast from Google Play and scan sdcard and apps. Not sure what it is. Looks like spam-ware.

I found that in my phone the other day too. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't really do anything.
Could be a log file. I'm not sure what it is. I would scan again once it appears. Not sure if it is I needed file or not. I don't have a nex 4 but was looking into getting one that's why I'm at the forum.
You can try sd maid which has a system cleaner. Or change the files permissions if you are worried about it transmitting data. But I wouldn't mess with it too much until you figure out what it is.

You guys could wipe your sdcard with twrp if you are worried, but back up all your wanted sdcard data to a computer first. And then put it back on right after. I do that with my Nexus 7 sometime. Not sure if it is the same process on Nex4. It may not be necessary, not sure.

When an app acts funky I always temporarily un-root, but I always re-root before I reboot. It's a pain, but about the only way some apps will run. Do the following to temporarily un-root.
Try an app called "hide my root" you must hide your "SU binary" and uninstall the super user app. Then run HBO GO/ whatever app is not working. After using the app go back to "hide my root" and restore SU binary and reinstall super user app.
I do not have HBO GO, but I have to do this procedure to play my ultraviolet movies and play some EA games.
I am currently running the rooted stock OTA rom. Good luck.
