Here's the deal...
In the UK the 64gb playbook is going for £129 and I can get a 16gb nexus 7 for around £165...
I'm not giving to be using the nexus as a gaming device as I will be getting a note 2... I will be using it for general browsing online and YouTube etc.. as well as putting photos on it. So what I'm asking is which has better build quality, and I've heard the screen quality is really good on the playbook. Also want about loading on Android.
Whats a blackberry?

I would go with the n7, but I am biased.
I just overclocked to 1.7 ghz and saw the benchmark.
My search for tablet superiority is over.
With cloud storage I do not need more than 16gb's

I just got the nexus today after ditching my playbook. Don't do it, playbook is a laggy, non functional mess without any apps to support it.

Exactly. No apps, no eco system, no developer support and an end of life OS. The Nexus 7 is a no brainer
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
The playbook has no apps to choose from, is an extremely sluggish device with absolutely no development. Plus RIM is a sinking ship, you would be shooting yourself in the foot to choose a Playbook over the Nexus 7.

It's a no brainer. The whole Blackberry ecosystem is almost as dead as Windows Phone.
It's really only a two horse race, iOS and Android. Anything else and you are flushing money down the pan.
This is quite an amusing thread for me.
Started with an ASUS Transformer Prime - buggy OS, kept crashing, very slow browsing with broken flash support. The device rebooted by itself.
Moved to an iPad 3. Worked perfectly, crashed once in 3 months, but I found it boring, overweight and uncomfortable to hold.
Moved to a Nexus 7. It died completely within 12 hours of purchase. On top of that, awful build quality - screen separation. Took me SIX WEEKS to finally get my refund from Google Play Store.
Noticed the Blackberry Playbook for 129 so gave it a go. Had it for a month now, and absolutely love it. My favorite tablet to date.
* Build quality is miles, miles better than Nexus 7. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional - the Nexus 7, in terms of materials, is CHEAP as it was built for an entirely different price point.
* Screen is lower resolution but the picture quality is far superior
* Blackberry OS has yet to crash once
* Flash support is best I've ever seen on a tablet. iPlayer works beautifully in HD from the BBC web site
* 64GB vs 8GB/16GB - no contest
* Sits on my Windows Workgroup wirelessly. I can drag and drop videos/anything else straight onto it from my Windows desktop and it doesn't need to be plugged in
* Good video codec support and great video player
* web browser is normally very fast
* Camera that records 1080p video and looks GREAT. Pictures are also very good - way, way better than Nexus 7's crappy little camera.
* Front facing stereo speakers that sound far better than Nexus 7's and aren't obstructed by hands.
The only cons to the Playbook, really, are the lack of apps. But to be perfectly honest, I found all the Android apps utter rubbish on a tablet. Most are designed for phones. Providing you primarily use it for what comes with it, it's a substantially better tablet than the Nexus 7 overall in my view.
My wife agrees and is about to buy one herself.

Was this a serious thread? I live in Canada and wouldn't give any stock in relying on RIM being around for the length of the warranty time frame. The few people I know who have a play book like it Ok because of the price and they sync their phone to it, that is the only way to have BBM(The only thing RIM has going for them still imo).

Of course I haven't had one for months - it broke within 1 day.

Considering the price, of course it's a serious thread. Why wouldn't it be?
As for the length of the warranty, this is of little importance to me since a tablet is the sort of thing you're likely to upgrade every year or so anyway.
I didn't buy it to be future-proof, as there's no point given the average upgrade cycle. I bought it because what it does now it does very well, and I suspect this is why your friends use it, too.
Look at my list of pros and tell me where I've gone wrong.
By all means, if the Nexus 7 is well built and reliable, that's fine. I would have stuck with mine had it been. But from day 1, it clearly was not and I think thousands of others have had a similar experience. My point is that the choice is not as clear-cut as some on here like to make out.

Interesting. Nexus 7 is my first tablet. Seems a little weak on build quality but I have had none of the serious problems others have (touch wood) to this point. I absolutely love it and I thought it was pretty reasonably priced for what it does. A colleague of mine got a Playbook a year or so ago and couldn't stop talking about how great it was. I actually got tired of hearing it. Sadly over the last year or so he has swung the other way and now seems to do a lot of moaning about lack of apps, support and upgrades, development community and so on. He will still defend its build quality but that's about it.
Do you really think most people will upgrade tablets yearly? I don't even get a new phone unless someone gives me a used one that's better than my current one. I guess I'm in the minority.

Perhaps you aren't in the minority - I'm something of a tech geek, so I like buying new gadgets and trying them out. With the Playbook, I'd JUST gotten my refund from Google and read somewhere about the huge discount on the 64GB Playbook (129 pounds UK, vs 170 inc. delivery for the Nexus 7). I just thought 'what the hell' at that price point, and went for it. Also, I knew I'd easily get a refund since I was buying direct from a high street store.
I use a tablet for:
* Checking email
* Browsing the web on the sofa
* Youtube/BBC iPlayer/other streaming video
* watching movies when travelling
* showing photos and videos to friends (yes, I'm one of those annoying people who enthusiastically shows photos of my baby to others)
* catching up on news via RSS feeds
I don't generally buy anything from app stores (be it Apple, Google Play or Blackberry's) since I never really see anything worthwhile. If I want to do serious work, or play a game, my desktop pc/media pc do these way better than any tablet. I also see no reason paying for lossy MP3 music when cds are cheaper and sound better, or paying for lossy, DRM/streamed movies on an app store where DVDs/Blu Rays are higher quality and can simply be ripped to my tablet.
Maybe I'm in the minority?
Either way, the Playbook does all of this stuff beautifully. I'd never, ever swap it for a Nexus 7.
Flexibility, power, freedom are few options I get from Android...so no way to any other OS...

This is a simple poll to see how XDA users are satisfied with their Google Nexus 7. Please select the answer that best describes your experience.
Lets not turn this into a defect / issue complaint thread but use it as a gauge at how users feel about their device.
:highfive:
Although I returned mine due to screen separation, I can recognize that even my slightly defective Nexus 7 was an extraordinarily good value. Unprecedented.
But at the same time I'm crestfallen. I think that if Google can very nearly produce a tablet of the highest quality for $200, they should raise the price to $225. They shouldn't have done what they did -- cutting corners on the assembly and neglecting quality control in order to meet demand.
I don't mean to rant, or complain, but I answered your poll honestly and wanted to clarify. I got what I paid for.
For the price, I cannot believe how good value this product is. So glad they haven't put a rear camera on this, don't understand why other manufacturers do! Not worried about the lack of expandable storage, totally understand the way Google want to go towards the cloud.
Overall as this is my 3rd tablet, I'm going to say 3rd time lucky, my favourite so far
7/10: Wish I didn't have to take the back off to tighten the screws for the screen. Will raise to a 9/10 when I figure out how (and if?) Google Now works in the UK and when they release Play Music, Magazines and other missing content for here. Unfortunately will never be 10/10 due to the fact that I slightly scuffed the back fixing the screen problem
Very happy indeed, so much so I am selling my ipods, ipad and mac book pro.
While I do intend to replace the mac with a pc laptop at some stage, the nexus is more than enough for my needs in the interim.
On the face of it it could be misconstrued as something else this post, but if explanations are required as to my thinking just ask.
9 out of10. Extremely satisfied. The price is right, the product is solid. Enough said.

I give this nexus 7 a 10/10. An excellent device all the way around. Has more than exceeded my expectations. Plus this is my first 7in. Tablet. I love the form factor and size of it. I can type very fast on it using thumb keyboard.
It is amazing !!!
I'd still buy one knowing about all issues outlined in the past week.
I have a bit of backlight bleed, which seemed to reduce after i tightened the screen screws, other than that its good. However im not blown away. Screen is a little dim, its smooth but no more so than my galaxy S3, it doesnt do anything my Galaxy tab 8.9 doesnt, apart from Google now.
I was really nervous ordering a Nexus 7 after reading about people having so many different quality control issues but I am extremely happy and satisfied with this $199 tablet. The quality control on mine was good except for a low volume external speaker. The problem was solved with advice from a forum member to use the Volume+ app. I fiddled with the settings and now it is as loud and clear as I want it. I rate it a 9/10.

I obviously knew going into it that I was buying a $250 tablet, so obviously there were going to be some cutbacks. It was definitely worth $250, but I really wish they would have offered a more expensive 7" Nexus in addition. I understand that they just wanted to boost the market, so that's why they made it so cheap. But a $200/$250 Nexus 7, and a $300/$350 Nexus 7 Pro or something would have been ideal for me...
For the price this is the best device I have ever owned, period.

no bugs. none that i experience with stock (only spend 2 hours in stock, straight root after that), there are some bugs in certain custom rom but nothing dealbreaking or annoying. The UI is the smoothest ever from android and you will love it.
I am also thinking about buying it or the Asus tf300 or not.
Is there any problem while using the 7" tablet for the school? Or a 10" tablet us better?

Its a great all around device. Reviews have been mostly positive but you have to use it to see for yourself. As for me, I love the thing lol. Use it for notes and emails. For school it works great. Gaming is great when I get a chance do get my gaming fix! Media usage is superb and I can't complain one bit about it. I have had no issues with the screen defect that has been reported by some. Screen is a tad washed out when comparing it to my one x but the one x is the best screen in the market in my opinion at least. For what that is worth. (Nothing) lol. Size wise I find it perfect for school and everything else. I use the new iPad at work everyday because it was provided by the company( I have to, not that I want to lol) and I just prefer a 7 inch form factor. Overall I'm super pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone who asks. School, games, media and with it being an android device, there is not really anything you can't do on this tablet. (Within reason lol)

I also wanted to wait until they get the imperfections out of the way and it's a good solid device with no hardware defects. Anyone who bought the first wave, is there any hardware problems you notice? I heard alot about the screen popping out a little
Buy one ASAP! The best tablet on the market right now. Can't best the price point and the power you get(Tegra3). Plus its running jelllybean. Then if you into rooting, unlocking, flashing custom roms & kernels, then nexus 7 is where its at. Android tablet scene doesn't get any hotter/more popular than nexus7 right now. Battery life great also. IT has a great display and very light.
Stop the contimplating. GET IT NOW! lol

Nexus 7 better all around. Plus for the price, the 7.7 not worth it compared to what you getting with the nexus 7. Nexus 7 has a great display also. It may not be Amoled but its high quality ips with 720p resolution and the colors won't be oversaturated and cartoonish looking like on Amoled. Pound for pound, nothing beats the nexus 7. Especially another tablet in similar size range. Nothing comes close. Nexus7 leads all the benchmarks right now. Plus we have sick developement. All the best custom roms and kernels. All the hard hitting developers have one and developing for nexus 7. Or if not, they already said they planning on it.
well, when ipad2 and 3 came out, plenty of problems, battery, eat, screen ....
second batch is corrected.
so if you buy it now, i think u will get a second batch, people getting model in july, got less lucky, i think models coming in august and beyond will have a better rate of non defective units.
view the number of defectives units reported by asus, they have figured out what to look at before units go into their box.
stil li think there is less 1% chance that your item got some defects. view the millions already sold, and people telling to purchase it with blind eyes.
Well i was looking at getting one but wanted to sell my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 first. But after getting to see it today and mess with it some i came straight home and got on the play store and ordered one. Can't wait until it gets here, i guess in the mean time i will just have to try and sell my other tablet. Haha.
Very nice device. It makes an excellent e-reader which pretty much was the difference for me.
I will be getting a Nexus tablet this Xmas, it will either be 32gb N7 or 16gb N10.
I'm very torn to which I should go for.
I currently have an iPad and I'm happy to be leaving IOS but I'm not sure how I'd 7" display on the N7.
My gut feeling is N7 due to the size but I'm not sure due to the size!!!
I know indecisive but that why I'm asking for your opinions.

I also have a iPad and going to transfer over to the N10.. I believe you have to think about what you going to do with the device the N7 is more portable to take on the road with you .
One thing I've in the past is that once you have a large screen and you've gotten used to it if you go to a smaller screen it will feel inadequate and "too small".
I owned a Nexus One before buying the Galaxy Nexus and when I went to use my N1 again just to factory reset it, it felt like a toy.
I would say get the Nexus 10 since you were on the iPad. You'll be very much satisfied I hope! I know I'm getting the N10!

I think you are right on with the size of the N7 being one of its biggest advantages and also one its biggest disadvantages.
The cost is also something to consider, as N10 is twice as expensive as the N7.
My gf and I have a N7, also a (1G) ipad. For home use, I find the size of the ipad better. Even on the go, the screen size on the N7 is a nice step up from a phone. However, if you are like me and will always have a phone on you, the N7 for what I need to do isn't worth hauling around. The N7 is "more portable" then the N10 or iPad, but both devices can often be a pain to haul around anyway. The iPad's screen size however makes a big difference. I think I remember calculating that my GN had about half the screen area of the N7, and the N7 had about half the screen area of the iPad.
Also, the screen quality on the N7 is solid, but the screen on the N10 will obviously look much better, and will be twice as big.
In my opinion, I would go with the N10. Since you came from using the ipad, I think you would miss the size.

I'm having a similar decision problem. Being a college student I'm always on the go and thought that the nexus 7 is for me. My problem is the size of my phone. The HTC EVO 4g LTE is pretty mondo sized (4.7in) and I'm trying to decide if I should just skip the 7 completely. Another problem is the price difference and practicality.
I read a lot of PDFs (take notes from them as well), and watch a lot of YouTube lectures. I've been looking around for the 10 just so I can get a hands-on experience and comparison, but can never find a demo.
Thanks so much for the help so far on this thread! :good:

But in a one-size-fits-all showdown, I think you're going to find the N7 is too small to really deal well with most PDF files, you'll be spending a LOT of time zooming. 3 inches of extra screen real estate and twice the pixels makes the N10 great for PDF viewing (well, as great as a 10" device can be with the PDF format).
Thanks for that feedback! As for the portability of the N10 would you say it's practical to take the $400 plunge to lug around everywhere?

I'd say it's worth it to get the Nexus 10, the nexus 10 is surprisingly light for a 10.1 inch tablet while still being well built, it's also pretty thin so think of it as carrying around a small notebook (Paper notebook). In reality it's not going to be that much more tablet to lug around then the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10 would certainly be lighter and easier to carry around then even a comparable ultra-portable laptop of comparable size.
I was trying to decide between a Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 a short while ago... went as far as making cardboard cutouts of both just to see how they would fare with general usage. Ended up choosing the Nexus 10
I own a N7 & 10 and believe me you wanna go w the 10!!! I had probs w/ my "2" 16gb Nexus 7s.(so did tons of other ppl) Defective first and now speakers pop on mine and my sons. I take care of my devices.. Never turned volume up past 1/2. I still have 1 my son uses and if your in a room and its night time or very quiet , you can hear a pop coming from the speakers. Very annoying!! N10 has been flawless for me thus far. I have not seen any of the issues others have. No reboots...etc. I'm sure the devs will fix all that in time. Open source rules!!:

I'll dive for the 10

Well, maybe I'm too late but .. here are my thoughts:
Since you write that you're always on the go .. the N10 is not a tablet you quickly grab from you bag, use it, and put it back in a few seconds. It's made for the full couch experience. If you intend to mostly use it while you're sitting in the cafeteria or in a lecture etc. .. that would be not a problem at all. If you need more mobility the N7 would be the right choice, I think.
As an engineering student ill be doing a lot more sitting and reading, but I know what you mean it was a tough decision. But now I wait

Here are my thoughts as I am running both an N7 and a N10.
The 7 was my first tablet and though it was the first generation, I did get the one with the loose screen. As I'm a computer geek by trade and lifestyle, i had the tools to pop it open, tighten a few screws and put it back together. The N7 has never come loose since. I keep it in a case that I originally bought for my 1st gen B&N Nook and it actually fits perfectly.
As for it's use, i have used it for everything from playing Angry birds to using it as a map for getting around Europe. It tethered to my Galaxy S3 with 0 issues and works very well and the battery life is impressive. I can get 3 full movies back to back without charging and still have enough juice to read for a couple hours. I have to say i have been thoroughly impressed by it. The N10 would have been a huge pain to try and use as a map around Europe. and it would have been a large target for thieves and muggers as well. The 7" looks like it could be anything from a tablet to a little hand written notepad esp when you are trying to find your way around somewhere. I will agree with everyone that the PDF functionality does suck and as the only thing i keep in PDF are manuals, then yes having the N10 would be better and yes the 1st gen did come with a loose side but as i said i'm a computer geek and it was an easy fix for me. And i do still use it to read books lol. My gf also bought herself one and uses it daily for ready, games and internet, she loves it.
As far as an overall rating the only downs being the screen and the pdf issue. I give it a 9 out of 10 because i don't see these issues as major things. I also never had any speaker issues.
Now as to the N10 I only got it last night and so i haven't had time to do much more than root, unlock the device and add a few things too it. But this morning i was able to show it off the a MD of the company I work for and show him how well it works as well as buy an "office suite" for 99 cents and be able to build files that were already MS office 2010 compatible. The quality of the screen is beautiful and the ability to read comic books as well as pdf is nice. I also intend in time to use this to replace my 1.5 year old laptop. (though nothing wrong with it) i can run citrix through Android and all i really need is a working keyboard. (though I would like a usb to BT transmitter, never seen one though) because i love my ergo split keyboards, hate typing on regular ones.
As for the N10 functionality, so far it's used all the stuff i have on both my S3 and my N7 without question (minus stickmount). I'm going to see if my Sirius satellite radio app works and that way i can use the company wifi to list to my radio account like i do on my phone. So far it's pretty good but but i'll give you more thoughts when i have used it.
I really wanted to get the N10, I really did. But Google just had to **** it up with their terrible customer service and a ****ty checkout system that spews out errors every single time. I'm done waiting around, so now looking for an alternative, any suggestions/recommendations?
I'm more of an Android fan obv.
TIA.
UPDATE: I ordered mines after a few e-mails with Google. Got the beast. It's amazing!
Ordering from Google was a piece of cake for me. I ordered it on a Saturday, got it that Thursday (Lexington, KY to Los Angeles). But I've never had to deal with their Support, so I'll take your word on that.
Having said that, I honestly don't think you'll find another tab that compares with the N10, but I love mine so much I'm hardly objective. I believe if you persevere with Google you'll thank yourself down the road.

Their support is basically "read the online help sections!!!!".
Anyway, I got this email just now from Google:
"Hello,
During a recent review of your Google Checkout account, we were unable to
verify your information.
As a result, your account has been temporarily suspended and you will be
unable to place orders. In order to resolve this situation, please provide
us with the requested information of MR XXXX
within 3 business days by filling out this form"
Um, I have been buying apps with this account for a long time now. What gives?
You got me, bud. If it's a credit card issue, maybe your card company can help. Sometimes when your billing address isn't *exactly* as it's written on your statement it can cause problems. But if you've been been using the same card all along, that's probably not it. I know because of the expense of the tab, my card company called me to confirm I had placed the order before they would authorize it. Maybe that has something to do with it.
I would tell you to buy from Amazon, but the last I checked, their pricing was higher.

The best alternative right now is IMO is the Kindle HD 8.9, but it is much more difficult to root and all that. If you wait a few more months other companies will have powerful tablets out with new processors and probably high res screens.
You could buy the nexus at retail too? I almost got the Samsung note 10.1 myself. Its screen isn't as nice and I would miss a few other things like the front facing speakers. But the note has the stylus and doesn't have the habit of rebooting unexpectedly either.
Aren't you going to have to straighten out Google's credit card issue in order to buy apps in the future anyway?

The note also has front facing speakers. The shape is very similar to the n10. Major difference is the note has a plastic feel to it and in my opinion doesn't feel as solid as the n10.
Also the note does not suffer from light bleed bit you're right, the screen is not as nice!

I'm in UK, and I don't think any retails sell the N10. I would have bought from Amazon but they are £100 more dearer and eBay prices are just insane - in comparison to Google's price tag.
The main reason why I want the N10 is for the screen. I'm a picky prick when it comes to screen resolution. Is light bleed a huge deal on these devices?
I've sent Google the docs they asked for anyway.

Only alternative that ccould match up with the n10 is going to the the Sony Xperia Tablet Z but you will have to wait another month or two. It may actually be a little faster than the n10 as well.
There has been a lot of complaints regarding light bleed but personally it wasn't an issue. Sure I can see some slight paleness on 2 sides in the dark at max brightness but in regular light using auto-brightness I don't see it on a dark screen. And quite frankly I would never have even noticed if it hadn't been for the notorious thread here. LOL
Best alternative its to wait for a new product... Nexus 10 II ... Maybe these guys from google will solve issues with battery life and with charging time.. Its a shame that you have almost perfect configuration but unable to use because of not enough juice. Not a complete satisfaction and this make you angry and tired to be dissapointed. Good luck

I wasn't planning on taking the tablet outside much, Used for indoors mostly, so when not in use would be charging. How 'bad' is the battery life like?
Get the galaxy note 10.1. It's a beast at multitasking!

There are various experience with the battery... I dont know where its the problem. I tired all the variants. Kernels rom.. Brightness etc but i cant get more of 5 hours screen on ( normal use)
I realized the problem imediatly after ive got the tablet.. 3 hours at that time from 100 % to 0 %... After few cycles ive got 5 hours but after more cycles she remained at this average. I can not do a RMA anymore. Mine doesn't have screen bleeding. Maybe you will have luck to find one with battery and screen ok. By the way, the screen its nice but not so amasing . No deep Black make sometimes screen look cheap LCD. And so what its grate for some if they almost all keep it like 30% for keep the battery alive more. Sorry for my english
Anyway the main reason i like it its because it rolls android... And have a good cpu... Besides this horror customer care from google. No original accesorie yet after months from launch... That is not the way i hoped from a monster like google and Samsung.

Samsung note 10.1
I think this tablet is the best alternative right now, because color reproduction is more vibrant then the N10. Black is deep, other main color like red, blue, and green look much more attractive to the eyes beside from the true multitasking. ( That's why I return N10 for the note 10.1). The screen isn't that sharp compare to the N10 but it isn't that bad. (If you use the tab at a right distance, then you won't notice the pixels). Color and the true multi screens, and S-pen are a plus for the Note 10.1. In my opinion, It is the best tab since I already used the Asus transformer prime, Microsoft Surface, Nexus 10. Sorry about my English and I hope this help you.
Even my HTC desire 2.5 years old amoled display it has deeper black than n10. Don t be so overexcited. Let the big companies that already have the next 10 year tehnology deliver to us the goods faster instead of asking 500 dollars on a product that has so many anoing insuficiences.
We need a little small official pogo cable for 4 months guys... Wtf.. And Its not ready yet... This is a nice comedy with us playing in ...
I was having also Asus infinity - laggy as hell like an old 94 computer... I give it back în hope that master google give us something for 2013. Flowless device ... I was so wrong

An amoled will ALWAYS have better blacks then an LCD. Its the nature if the display. Blacks on an Amoled are pixels that are turned off, whereas an LCD panel reproduces blacks while lit. Produced blacks (amoled) > Reproduced blacks (LCD). The trade off is worse battery life, inaccurate (but over saturated, which people love) colors, and mostly god awful whites.
The Nexus 10 is a fabulous tablet. It has its issues, they all do. But for a power user like myself, there isn't even a competition. I cannot use a Touchwiz device, and ASUS burned their bridge with me over the Nexus 7. (EMMC issues, build quality nonexistent). Sony is a true competitor but I cannot stand around for months waiting for a company to issue an update. Developers are great, and porting AOSP and CM are good in general, but they have issues and most of the time the cons outweigh the pros and I have to fall back to a stock based system. To each their own though, there is not a "One tablet fits all", even the iPad isn't perfect. I couldn't get past the Apple wall, and 4:3 aspect ratio

Amoled screens have an infinite contrast ratio, your HTC Desire will have deeper blacks the an any single non amoled device out there, put it next to an iPhone, a Nexus 4, a Droid DNA and the result will be the same.
The black levels could be better here, I won't deny that.
Wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. It's rumored to have a high resolution screen like the Nexus 10. Hopefully one with deeper blacks and punchier colours though.
Hopefully it will be announced on the 14th of March with the SGS4.
Just curious...is the Nook HD+ with Cyanogen worth a look? It's a bit bare-bones compared to the N10 (no BT, no camera) but otherwise, it seemed like a good value @ $269. From what I can tell, you can even buy an N2A card to make the transition to CM painless.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
If you don't need Android... The iPad 4 is a decent enough alternative. Slightly heavier, thicker and lower resolution screen. They are on sometimes on sale too.
In android world... If not the nexus... Maybe the new Asus Memo. It's a 300 tegra 3 tablet... SD and it looks like Asus fixed the memory. If not the nexus, I'd honestly wait because a whole new generation of processors are coming.

Well, ive been using my nexus 9 now for a few days and i just feel a little bit let down knowing how much ive spent and the results ive got. This feeling is purely regarding the hardware as i love lollipop and all the benefits that brings.
I thought i was happy with my nexus 9, well i was until i picked up my nexus 7 2013 and wow.. So light and it felt really nice! No sharp corners and the screen is loads better than the 9. This got me thinking, ive paid double for the 9.
What i would of loved is the 7 just resizing to the 9, using the same style and design (with wireless charging) im not over bothered about the new cpu if im honest, the one in the 7 is fast enough. Plus lollipop feels really slick anyway when i tried the preview version. They would of sold bucket loads, ok a few people would of wanted more but its better that than have loads of dissapointed customers.
Ive owned the Nexus 4 / 5 and both 7's and i even sold my 5 hoping to buy a 6.. Well until they released the price, so im back using the 4 again and very happy with it.
Also to top it all off and rub salt in the wounds HTC in the USA did a 50% off sale on the N9...ok it was only for a day but surely they wouldnt do that if they were losing money on each device would they?
Needless to say my N9 will be going back as faulty for a full refund due to its screen flicker. I love the 4:3 screen ratio so im looking for a alternative.. Any ideas?
Steve
Screen is "loads better" on the N7? I don't understand at all. I've had both side by side and can't see how you can come to that conclusion.
I believe the only alternative with a 4:3 aspect ratio would be an iPad.

Can you do a Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 side by side video review?
I'm curious how they compare performance wise, i.e. page loads, refresh rates, stuttering, what movies look like on the N9 in the horizontal orientation etc.

I'll see if I have time this weekend.
Don't have a tripod, would be tough to hold the camera and perform actions at the same time on both tablet, but I'll see what I can do.

Think its more your wallet that has hurt your view of it. (in my opinion) and I get that. That and lollipop is great its supposed to be faster and not just on new devices this was the goal starting from KK. So shelling out that much money when you have the N7 may hurt a bit. I like the portability of the N7 Spent most my time with the n10 though. I just prefer bigger for some tasks.
The 50% sale only lasted an hour or less and was more hype than anything. Still there is a large markup on these much like there is on every premium device.
The screen flicker i don't have but if I were you I would definitely do an exchange or just send it back.
Personally I have been enjoying it but haven't spent enough time with it yet ( one day)
I'm enjoying mine a lot. I've had both Nexus 7's and I liked the 2nd gen a lot. But it didn't feel like a tablet to much because it wasn't really much bigger than my phones (Nexus 5 and OnePlus) this is a good upgrade. I'm waiting for more performance tweaks in future updates or new Roms. It hiccups from time to time but not much to worry about.

death before apple!
Just imagine taking the iPad air 2 and putting lollipop on it, best tablet ftw
The N9 screen is a LOT better than the N7's (lightbleed aside). I would go as far as to say that it has the best overall screen of any Nexus device that came before it in terms of color accuracy, fidelity, and viewing angles.
I share the thoughts of the op. I have both the n7 FHD and n9 and ive only been using the n7 since every time I grab the n9 the light bleed, loose back and over heating bothers me so much. I'm returning it for sure. Maybe I'll give it another shot once they work out all these issues.
And also, just noticed today when turning the n9 on, that it has yellowish spots when the screen is black but backlight is on (as in when turning on).

Zero issues here with mine. Every product has their issues. There is always an "issues" and "disappointment" bandwagon for the first few weeks.

Exactly.
Some people think buying The Shield will make them happy. Sure, it's a great tablet, I had one before my N9 I know but check out their board on xda. It's just as littered with complains of this fault and that fault.
I've never heard of a device with ZERO complaints about something.
I am loving my N9. I have the Asus TF701T also and now that ive been using the N9 for a week the only time i pick up the Asus is when i want to play a game that is not compatible yet on my N9. I have none of the issues that others are complaining about. Feels great, looks great and works great.
That's all folks.
I am finding a LOT more reviews where they are saying the N9 was a missed chance... there is no excuse for the squidgy back and light bleed on a premium tablet...
I'm thinking Nokia N1 now... it has the laminated screen and the aluminum body the N9 should of had.
So, what tablets have similar specs to the N9, but without the issues, regardless of cost? I'm currently waiting for LTE version (though maybe I'll grab a sand one when it comes out if I decide I can live without LTE), but I'm definitely open to a better alternative. I know there aren't any that have 64 bit processors or Android 5.0 (yet). But beside those, is there any other Android tablet that's around 8-9 inches and has similar performance. I mostly will use it for web browsing, games, and testing apps that I've developed. Thanks!
