Nexus S 4G modems? - Epic 4G General

Hello everyone, I'm trying to see different opinions from people who have flashed the NS4G modems on their E4G's. All I want is to see the different results from different regions.
If you can please include:
Modem installed
ROM installed
Kernel installed &
Region you reside in.
Thank you.

Signal quality is SO much better. Data speeds: may Max on 3G so fat is 2.25 down and IIRC, it was 1.17 up...I could be mistaken on the exact numbers , but my speeds have doubled on the nexus modem. I tried all available modems and KL2 was the best for me. Good luck!

My signal has improved drastically. I am on an alternate carrier. Not sprint. Before the modem I was having a hard time trying to find signals so I would use Wifi. With the NS4G Modem its improved big time. I get full bars almost every where. And the internet is almost as fast as my Wifi

Everyone posting here really should use a static metric. Whether that is kilobytes (kB), kilobits (kb), megabytes (MB) or megabits (Mb).
This gives everyone a real idea of your before and after speeds.

I am getting about 6-7 MBPs down, 1-2 up (4G), 1.5 - 2 down, 0.5-0.7 up 3g. It is slightly better than with my previous Epic FC09 modem, but so far I haven't seen a drastic improvement in data speed.
However - and this is concerning - on KL2 I had three calls drop this morning. This _very rarely_ happened with FC09. I am on the latest Sprint PRL (XXX90), if it matters any. Anybody else notice an excessive amount of calls being dropped since switching from Epic radio to Crespo?

My setup is pretty much the same as everyone else. While I can say after pretty much driving all thru town today that, I get much faster speeds around town but at home it's still very slow. WiFi keeps me sane lol.

You can try other modems, I haven't had any dropped calls, and most of the things I've read regarding dropped calls in the nexus modem said that they don't happen as much.

Havent had any problems with dropped calls and I was on FC09 as well.
Try re-flashing the modem or what xboxfanj said about trying other modems.

KL2 Modem (I have tried them all, no real difference)

I am getting a humble 155kbps down and 243kbps up.
This is a poor reception area and I was only getting about a third of the download speed prior to flashing that modem, so that is progress, I gues.

Flashed the modem file twice, Seems to be sticking okay.
Either that or Speedtest is just not working right, but when I test WiFi my values seem consistent.

koop1955, If you want to get out of Sprint w/o an ETF, you could always do some excessive roaming in roam control or with a custom PRL.

Hi, Marcusant. I knew that you lived in the area. Go Blue or Green or whatever your affiliation may happen to be.
My reason for posting was not to garner sympathy for my poor reception. I get virtually no dropped calls, GPS works fine, etc. When I am home, I use WiFi or my PC for downloads.
I was trying to set people's expectations about the modem upgrade. If you live in a poor reception area, you shouldn't expect a miraculous change. I did make a reasonable improvement for me and I okay with the results. Not exactly satisfied, but okay.
BTW, I have also reset PRL since update, for what that might be worth.

I also added the build.prop tweaks
Seems to be a bit better, haven't had any dropped calls when I am out and about so far, then then I normally didnt get them before either.
I do have one spot that was almost guaranteed to drop a call when I went through it, gonna try and test out the modem the next time I drive through that area.

Damn on 3g I'm getting 120kbps down and 125kbps up on Fc09. Doesn't really change much when I change to KL2 or LC2 crespo radios. I've tried every rom and radio. odin, wipe, every which way.

My epic 4g:
CM9 stable
KL2 modem
Stock CM9 kernel (NS4G patch)
Sitting at home, I get consistent 1.4Mbps down and 500kbps up.
Wife's epic 4g:
Stock FC09
FC09 modem
Not even rooted!
Within inches of my phone, she gets consistent 1.9Mbps down and 500kbps up.
Now, I feel like I have better coverage than I used to have, but my limited testing has shown no appreciable difference between the two. During a couple of road trips we have taken, we both roam together and have similar service levels. Though since she is on stock, she always has 3g (yeah right...).
We are in the Birmingham, AL area.

That's pretty much as good as you're gonna get on Sprint's 3G network, so the Nexus modems probably won't be too beneficial for you.

Performance Test of Different Radio Versions[New Results by solidmac]

EDIT:
Huge thanks to solidmac for contributing his/her test result:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub...NHdWxMbWc&hl=en&single=true&gid=0&output=html
-------------
Hi everyone.
There are currently three different versions of radios available for Nexus One Froyo roms.
I conducted a test on all these 3 versions: 4.06, 5.08 and 5.12, and I would like to share my test result.
Link to test result:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ah8PsMa_NqfedERnUmtBWWdJc19OR3lGcmhvR2psMHc&hl=en
(All using unit kBps, kilo-byte-per-second)
My test strategy:
Test both 2G and H data speed.
Phone is put very close to window, no finger is touching on it during each test.
Results provided by SpeedTest.net application.
Default DNS server is used.
Tests were conducted consecutively.
Very poor results (2 occurrences,once with 508 H, once with 512 2G) are dropped.
About Phone:
Nexus One, purchased on 2nd March
CM6 110022010-nightly
Kernel: 2.6.35-7 925mV CFS AVS AIX 720p-Monks-103010
Environmental information:
Cheltenham, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia,
Cloudy, light wind, no rain,
Full bars signal during testing,
Yes Optus mobile company, APN selected to Yes Internet.
Thank you. I was surprised by these results, but its good to finally se some sort of comparison between the radios...
great data!
thx for the data and now i'm kinda regret flashing 5.12 lol
Interesting....nice to see the comparison stats! thanks
Flashing 512 isn't all that bad it has much better ping results meaning it reaches the website first than all the other ones now the only down side is the marginal dl speed
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
That seems to confirm the results I got from switching the radios around.
I'm sticking with the latest though as it's not clear what other changes have been made, but I ten to believe that newer should be better
Base on the test i wonder if the newer radio only mean for the korean network.
Anyway any data for wifi connection?

I actually thought about testing wifi performance
but that probably won't reflex real radio performance since wifi performance is very constant for me no matter which version of radio i use.
also although 4.06 radio gives sometimes better performance, but I feel 5.12 has significant lower power consumption compare to 4.06
these radios show a difference under bad conditions.. OP if you could run an other test in a bad area or create a bad area ( putting the phone in a weak signal area 2-3 bars ) should show clearer results
Great Works, and now I know how to select radio.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
In terms of the ping results you HAVE to omit those 999s, thats not an actual reading of 999, thats saying the reading was 999+ which is not a finite number, so you cant take an average of it.
You've also got such wild spikes of 80% on the H download speeds that, not to put a downer on things, but the results are statistically worthless. You'd have to do a way bigger sample than that.
Since flashing 5.12, I've hardly ever dropped below 3G. I don't really care if it's faster/slower than the others, what matters to me is consistency...
I guess the point I'm making is that you may also wish to look at large packets of data (say 100mb) over a longer duration, and see those kind of results, also?
Of course, network, network loading, location, weather, etc all throw in variables that you can't account for. Only many statistical samples over time can help smooth out the anomolies.
Perhaps my nuclear engineering side is showing?

Haha, well you ARE correct though, network is inconsistent, especially when there are lots of people using data on the same antenna as you...causes a saturation in the spectrum and slows down speeds...
But I second that...do another test with bigger files (if you ever do another test )
thanks everyone
next time when I get large amount of mobile data I'll test again.
I went ahead and did one today hope it provides enough information if you guys have any questions please ask i will try to provide an answer.
Nexus one 5.08 vs 5.12
Nice chart, decided to stick with 4.06_07
Very brave of you to try all the radios
4xx.x version have bad ping scores compared to the newer versions. So pages queue up faster and search and voice to text are analyzed faster. Also the newer radios are more stable with their speeds especially in the wifi and 3g.

[Modem] - Telus TLJL3 (Froyo) - 850 enabled, HSDPA/HSUPA, better battery and GPS (?)

This modem works great for most people, and we've found it to have a number of advantages over other modems available. A few people have had issues and/or not thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Anyone who isn't satisfied with this modem will get a full refund.
You might want to clear your GPS data after flashing - *#*#1472365#*#* --> Delete GPS data --> Get position test. Get out of your basement for best results. Lots of us get great GPS signal with this, if you didn't clear your data and you don't get a good signal, don't complain to us about it.
Unfortunately, the people who have had issues with it have provided us approximately ZERO useful information as to what kernel/ROM they are using, so I'm not sure what the incompatibilities are. "Voice doesn't work hurr durr...flashing back." Thanks! How very helpful.
I pulled this out of the leaked froyo update for the Telus Fascinate 3G+ (It IS as GSM phone, even though it's called a Fascinate. Trust me.) The Fascinate 3G+ is a T959 (ie Vibrant) model, but Telus uses the same 3G data bands that AT&T does. I thought I'd put it out there for others to use. So far seems like a decent modem, I had the highest speedtest I've ever had (~3MB/sec) and the lowest ping I've ever had (13ms) with any modem, although, admittedly, it hasn't been consistent. Anecodotally, (and admittedly with limited testing this afternoon) it seems to use less battery than other modems I've used recently.
For anyone interested, the full leak of TLJL3 is here but I flashed it and didn't notice anything spectacular about it. It was a 2.2 build and the stock quadrant was 950-1050.

So far, it appears to work with all ROMs using either an i9000 or Captivate based kernel. Which covers basically anything in this forum. (If you find this not to be accurate, please PM me so I can change this accordingly.) It may not work with stock or modified Captivate kernels. We haven't received any useful feedback from users about this, so it's hard to be definitive about it.
What are the advantages/disadvantages to this modem?

At this time, it's hard to say definitively. So much of our use varies from day to day, so it's hard to be completely certain without a very sensitive voltmeter. Anecdotally, battery consumption seems to be a much better for me with this modem on the CM6.1 Beta 3, others users have reported similar results. Several users have reported better connections, and better lock times for GPS. I have personally had the best d/l speeds I've had on any modem, and the best pings on any modem. YMMV.
After flashing this modem I'm now at 50% TWS, what should I do?

can we have some information about this modem?
HSPA?
gps?
Battery?
We Will need some information to show us that this is better than JK4.
I'm flashing it on my Captivate now. I will edit my post later with how it compares to JK4 on my phone
I am interested to know how it performs because I have never had a better signal at my house than with the captivate JI6. I am using JK4 now with quite good performance, however when ever using an HSUPA enabled modem I ALWAYS get much much slower data than with say JI6 or the old JF6 or even JJ4. not sure why, though up-link is much faster with an HSUPA enabled modem the down-loink sucks and downloads are really slow as is indicated with consistently slower down-link tests on speedtest.net app.

HSPA - See above.
gps - So far I can't say that either JK4 or JL3 have been consistent performers for me, which may be due to CM6.1 or not. But the best performance from both has been within 2m.
Battery - See op.
I'm not trying to convince anyone this is better than JK4, and I'm not sure that it is. Just putting it out there.
I am on cm 6.1 and I can say that jk4 is signifity better. I have no proof.
So far it's not bad, getting decent signal for an HSUPA enabled 850MHz modem. I wish I new why these modems drop my download speed so low... just so I wouldn't be puzzled and would at least know why.
I believe because it removes some of your download bandwidth to handle some of your upload bandwidth....thats obviously not the technical term for it...but you know what i mean...

So late Thursday night I flashed the jk4 modem because of call quality issues with jk3. my gps has not locked since. just flashed the new one and it locked in thirty seconds with nine sats inside in the pouring rain. Go figure...
No gps on jk4 either.

I have to say I have no clue whats up with all the different modem files but I installed this modem in my Captivate running Cog 2.3B6 and was able to lock onto about 8 sats in 30-40 seconds with a good amount of them 35dba and above.
Also running speed test on an out of state server netted the following.
4188kbps Down 1308kbps upload.
not too shabby.
Just got 4.8/1.3 mbps. Best speedtest ever.

Yeah, no problem man. I just stumbled upon this, and thought I'd check it out. I seem to be losing 1-2%/hr on standby with CM6.1 (undervolted), and it's really bringing the battery consumption down into perfectly usable levels (now if we could only figure out that goddamn full charge death bug )
I had a 13 and 56ms ping this morning! So that 73 from yesterday certainly wasn't a fluke. Normally, I'm around 200-300+.
So this modem seems to work fine with stock Captivate kernels from DG?

4G latency on EC05

I have run a few tests, and ever since installing EC05 I have noticed that my latency on 4G is way better. I used to see it around 250, and now it is in the 90 to 120 range. It also wakes up faster than it did before. I actually like using 4G now, lol. Anyone else notice that their latency and wake up is better?

That's due to the updated modem firmware mostly. They performed several fixes on that front and overall should be getting a lot better performance not just on 4G but 3G as well.

When ACS makes a ROM from EC05 then I'll update. Are you using stock or Bonsai?
The EC05 update and the modem overall fixed all the problems everyone was seeing. Check every problem people were complaining about and you will see that Sprint fixed all of the problems with the EC05 update. The Modem is nearly perfected in the EC05 update as well.
Even when acs does release the new version it may not include the modem just like bonsai. So just odin it now its worth it. 3g drain is really low now.

My general advice; go with older stuff. With the exception of a few ROMs, the current crop appears to be some seriously jury rigged work that just barely works. I've yet to install ANY AOSP ROM that didn't end up self-destructing or failing from the first boot. I think WildStang ROMs are probably the best pieces of work currently out if stability and functionality are features that impress you.
Dude try joelz runnymede 3D Rom with radio 08.08 and tinys gingersense kernel. I'm loving this and think u will too.

All the Sense 3.0 ROMs run like molasses in January; SLOW as hell! 3D sure as hell isn't doing it any favors.
I'm using CM7 latest nightly, radio 11.x and tiny's incredikernel (10/8)
CM7 = It's quick, easily customization with android kitchen and with LP+ and custom dock it looks pretty snazzy
radio 11x = After trying all the radio's I find this one the most battery efficient, the GPS locks quick and data rate is excellent
( Note that differences between radio's are typically very small, I do believe this one is big enough to have me keep using it. Decide for yourself, everyone seems to have their own opinion on which is best )
tiny's incredikenel (10/8) = I actually just downloaded this one so not much of a review, but the quick charge and also the quick charge USB are big helps, not to mention custom voltages if you want to save a little bit more battery

Yes, that is the specific radio.
I have installed cm7.1 update and have tried every fix/ patch I can find in these forums to correct this horrible radio problem...I can't seem to get over two bars at any given spot. I have tried glazing new kernals, prl, radio, etc...what is the best combination to run cm7.1...any help with this would greatly. Be appreciated....thanks in advance....oh ya I was having problems with wireless tethering. Also but was able to fix that with placing a tether folder in root that was missing

The sense roms' signal bars are a little more generous than aosp. go to settings about phone and status and look at the dBm's for an accurate reading of signal strength.
On cm7 I usually stay between one and two bars, whereas on sense I would read up to four in the same areas, with the same dBm reading (no difference in actual signal strength).
I'm sitting at -94 to -97 dbm and 0asu....is that about normal?....I switched to a savage kernal the other day which seems to be helping other issues but radio is still an issue ...thanks for your help

what i'm trying to get across is that you don't have a radio issue. The same dBm will show more bars on a sense ROM than an aosp one.
If you'd like, flash a sense ROM and an aosp one. Then take an average in the same area over a period of time of what you're dBm's are. You shouldn't see much of a difference because roms have nothing to do with signal strength.
Edit: there us no 'normal' dBm number because there are so many variables to signal strength (distance from tower, humidity, elevation etc.). If you start to drop calls then you have a problem, if not, you're fine.
Gotcha....thanks for the insight!!!

Yeah you're not going to drop a call or get slow data from that, it is rather low though but nothing to worry about. Once it goes past 100 you should start to worry but again it'd still have to be significantly lower for all the bad stuff to start happening.
Besides all that, what makes you think this is a radio problem instead of just not-so-great coverage?
Just had some issues with wifi, calls, 3g/4g coverage , market connection( even on wifi)

Wifi speeds top out around 6Mbps?

I have a fairly fast cable service (high 30's/low 40's Mbps) and a decent wireless-N router. My Evo seems to hit a wall around 6Mbps, never higher. However, I've seen those on the forum who seem to get faster speeds then that.
I understand this is a relative limitation to the hardware and I'm not going to see the speeds I see on my laptop.
It would be interesting to see what others are getting for wifi speeds.
With my current DSL internet, 2mbsps down, one up.
With Comcast at someone else's house. 8900 and 10,000 with adfree on. Didn't know made much of a difference.

Try disabling mobile networks before turning on wifi it seems to help with my wifi speed although I've never tested my wifi speeds thru my evo cuz I don't use it much
We are legion, for we are many.
My work wifi can get speeds up to 100mbps on computers, and I normally see about 15-20mbps on the evo.
I get average of 7megs

With my uncle wifi he has comcast, the highest on sense roms I have reached 21Mbps down and 6.12Mbps up. but on miui the highest I've ever got was 14Mbps and like 3-4Mbps up.

I've wondered if it had to do with the fact I run AOSP roms and not sense.
It would be great if a dev could chime in and explain why there's a difference.

Yes aosp (cm7 or deck) is the problem with slow wifi speed. sitting right next to the router with cm7/deck my evo top out at 7 or 8 Mbps while sense rom (fresh latest) I get an average of 11 Mbps, my DSL top out at 12 Mbps. Also aosp rom suffer more from not only low signal but slow wifi speed when you move further away from room to room, where as sense does slow down but not as much as aosp rom. I love aosp and currently continue to use aosp because of it speed over sense base rom. In my test sense rom stutter/choppy while watching flash video via browser (stock or opera or dolphin) but aosp (cm7 or deck) run a lot smoother.
Kinda what I expected. Thanks for the explanation.
Have you tried 3GTurboCharger script that is located in the V6 SuperCharger thread, it includes wifi xer... something to consider...

I am currently running an AOSP ROM ( Deck 1.3 ) and with my TWC 30m down, 2m up cable modem I am getting 13 - 15m down and 2m up no matter where in the house I am. Even when I am outside in the yard and only showing one bar on the WiFi Manager widget.
I ** DID ** get slower speeds on the CM7 ROM. Usually in the 7 - 8m range.
I haven't tried the CM7 ROM since I upgraded the radios though. It might have made a difference.
On a Sense ROM (JTG-ICS-4.0.3 b4) I can get 20+m. But I do agree that my video streaming on the Sense ROM has been anything but nice. And that is on ANY of the Sense ROMs I have tried.
