Hi everyone.
There are currently three different versions of radios available for Nexus One Froyo roms.
I conducted a test on all these 3 versions: 4.06, 5.08 and 5.12, and I would like to share my test result.
Link to test result:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ah8PsMa_NqfedERnUmtBWWdJc19OR3lGcmhvR2psMHc&hl=en
(All using unit kBps, kilo-byte-per-second)
My test strategy:
Test both 2G and H data speed.
Phone is put very close to window, no finger is touching on it during each test.
Results provided by SpeedTest.net application.
Default DNS server is used.
Tests were conducted consecutively.
Very poor results (2 occurrences,once with 508 H, once with 512 2G) are dropped.
About Phone:
Nexus One, purchased on 2nd March
CM6 110022010-nightly
Kernel: 2.6.35-7 925mV CFS AVS AIX 720p-Monks-103010
Environmental information:
Cheltenham, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia,
Cloudy, light wind, no rain,
Full bars signal during testing,
Yes Optus mobile company, APN selected to Yes Internet.
Thank you. I was surprised by these results, but its good to finally se some sort of comparison between the radios...
great data!
thx for the data and now i'm kinda regret flashing 5.12 lol
Interesting....nice to see the comparison stats! thanks
Flashing 512 isn't all that bad it has much better ping results meaning it reaches the website first than all the other ones now the only down side is the marginal dl speed

That seems to confirm the results I got from switching the radios around.
I'm sticking with the latest though as it's not clear what other changes have been made, but I ten to believe that newer should be better
Base on the test i wonder if the newer radio only mean for the korean network.
Anyway any data for wifi connection?

I actually thought about testing wifi performance
but that probably won't reflex real radio performance since wifi performance is very constant for me no matter which version of radio i use.
also although 4.06 radio gives sometimes better performance, but I feel 5.12 has significant lower power consumption compare to 4.06
these radios show a difference under bad conditions.. OP if you could run an other test in a bad area or create a bad area ( putting the phone in a weak signal area 2-3 bars ) should show clearer results
Great Works, and now I know how to select radio.

In terms of the ping results you HAVE to omit those 999s, thats not an actual reading of 999, thats saying the reading was 999+ which is not a finite number, so you cant take an average of it.
You've also got such wild spikes of 80% on the H download speeds that, not to put a downer on things, but the results are statistically worthless. You'd have to do a way bigger sample than that.
Since flashing 5.12, I've hardly ever dropped below 3G. I don't really care if it's faster/slower than the others, what matters to me is consistency...
I guess the point I'm making is that you may also wish to look at large packets of data (say 100mb) over a longer duration, and see those kind of results, also?
Of course, network, network loading, location, weather, etc all throw in variables that you can't account for. Only many statistical samples over time can help smooth out the anomolies.
Perhaps my nuclear engineering side is showing?

Haha, well you ARE correct though, network is inconsistent, especially when there are lots of people using data on the same antenna as you...causes a saturation in the spectrum and slows down speeds...
But I second that...do another test with bigger files (if you ever do another test )
thanks everyone
next time when I get large amount of mobile data I'll test again.
I went ahead and did one today hope it provides enough information if you guys have any questions please ask i will try to provide an answer.
Nexus one 5.08 vs 5.12
Nice chart, decided to stick with 4.06_07
Very brave of you to try all the radios
4xx.x version have bad ping scores compared to the newer versions. So pages queue up faster and search and voice to text are analyzed faster. Also the newer radios are more stable with their speeds especially in the wifi and 3g.

Hey mate
thanks for your test result
but i was wondering, why do you have test result on 5.09 radio.. did it work on Nexus One? I thought 509 radio was for Desire
I think that was just a typo. Should be 5.08

4.04
Is that from the e27 update?
Also wondering why you say 4.04 is better...?
thanks
It depends on your location.
4.04 is the latest however I find 4.03 to be the best. Mileage will vary. Try them both out and see which one works for you
I had a bit of problems with the original, none with 4.03, and none with 4.04.
3G issues are highly overhyped.
Don't bother with the radio.
To the average user, there is absolutely ZERO noticeable difference between radio versions.
Anyone who says otherwise is just experiencing a nice little placebo effect

with my T-Mobile Nexus One, i had the best results with 4.03. with 4.04 i had signal drops more often. since switching to the at&t version i've tried all 3 radios and there's no notable difference. all 3 worked well: getting 4 signal bars and consistent internet speeds averaging 3.2 Mbps/downloads and 1.3 Mbps/uploads. fyi, the at&t version uses the 4.04 radio.

Unless Speed Test is totally bonkers I get 2X faster data connection with 4.03 than I do with 4.04. Reception-wise there is no difference between the two IMO.
Two times the speed suggests there is something is not playiing well with 404 on your installation. Never argue with what works though.
Another vote for 4.03.
Was getting CONSTANT drops after the upgrade
It's been a minute since I've used my dinc because I have been using my Thunderbolt almost exclusively.. soooo I was wondering what you guys are using or think is the best combo. Radio I'm the most curious about!
Love being back on the dinc due to its nice and small size!!

My general advice; go with older stuff. With the exception of a few ROMs, the current crop appears to be some seriously jury rigged work that just barely works. I've yet to install ANY AOSP ROM that didn't end up self-destructing or failing from the first boot. I think WildStang ROMs are probably the best pieces of work currently out if stability and functionality are features that impress you.

All the Sense 3.0 ROMs run like molasses in January; SLOW as hell! 3D sure as hell isn't doing it any favors.
I'm using CM7 latest nightly, radio 11.x and tiny's incredikernel (10/8)
CM7 = It's quick, easily customization with android kitchen and with LP+ and custom dock it looks pretty snazzy
radio 11x = After trying all the radio's I find this one the most battery efficient, the GPS locks quick and data rate is excellent
( Note that differences between radio's are typically very small, I do believe this one is big enough to have me keep using it. Decide for yourself, everyone seems to have their own opinion on which is best )
tiny's incredikenel (10/8) = I actually just downloaded this one so not much of a review, but the quick charge and also the quick charge USB are big helps, not to mention custom voltages if you want to save a little bit more battery

I have tried glazing new kernals, prl, radio, etc...what is the best combination to run cm7.1...any help with this would greatly. Be appreciated....thanks in advance....oh ya I was having problems with wireless tethering. Also but was able to fix that with placing a tether folder in root that was missing

The sense roms' signal bars are a little more generous than aosp. go to settings about phone and status and look at the dBm's for an accurate reading of signal strength.
On cm7 I usually stay between one and two bars, whereas on sense I would read up to four in the same areas, with the same dBm reading (no difference in actual signal strength).
I'm sitting at -94 to -97 dbm and 0asu....is that about normal?....I switched to a savage kernal the other day which seems to be helping other issues but radio is still an issue ...thanks for your help
sent from my Narly turbocharged EVO running CM7.1 with 22 lbs. of boost
what i'm trying to get across is that you don't have a radio issue. The same dBm will show more bars on a sense ROM than an aosp one.
If you'd like, flash a sense ROM and an aosp one. Then take an average in the same area over a period of time of what you're dBm's are. You shouldn't see much of a difference because roms have nothing to do with signal strength.
Edit: there us no 'normal' dBm number because there are so many variables to signal strength (distance from tower, humidity, elevation etc.). If you start to drop calls then you have a problem, if not, you're fine.
Gotcha....thanks for the insight!!!

Yeah you're not going to drop a call or get slow data from that, it is rather low though but nothing to worry about. Once it goes past 100 you should start to worry but again it'd still have to be significantly lower for all the bad stuff to start happening.
Besides all that, what makes you think this is a radio problem instead of just not-so-great coverage?
Just had some issues with wifi, calls, 3g/4g coverage , market connection( even on wifi)

FOR CM7 BASED ROMS
IMPORTANT UPDATE: I have done some research on flashing radio images and found some interesting information. Apparently there are 2 files that pertain to radios in the RUU releases, a radio.img and a rcdata.img. We all have been flashing only the radio.img file but the rcdata.img contains further carrier information that directly relates to information in the build.prop file. I have put together a new 26.13.04.19 radio zip file that contains both the radio.img and the rcdata.img. The .img files were taken directly from the latest T-Mobile RUU release. This new radio/rcdata zip needs to be flashed through bootloader just like you flashed a radio in the past. As usual, you''ll need to rename the zip file to PC10IMG.zip before you reboot into bootloader. Check the MD5 Sum after you download the file to your sdcard to make sure it matches the following:

With the release of the latest T-Mobile update a new radio was included with the promise of better battery life. The following is from the T-Mobile support website.
On October 17, T-Mobile G2 devices will begin to receive an Over-The-Air (OTA) update to Android 2.3.4 / Software Version 2.16.531.5. The update will roll out in waves over the coming weeks.
The update provides the following improvements.
Improvements:
Google Security Patch
Google Skymap improvements
Battery life improvements
Data connection while roaming domestically
After flashing the new radio taken from the OTA listed above I really didn't notice any real improvements in battery life. After about a week using the new radio I decided to try matching the lib-ril .so files that were included in the OTA with my current installation of CM7. Almost immediately I noticed an improvement in battery life, wifi and data switching and slightly better data speeds over 4G. I have been using the matching files now for about 10 days and can say that I am getting the best battery life from my G2 since I've had it. I've been flashing CM7 nightlies since just about day one along with flashing radios etc and this is a noticeable change. I asked 2 others here in the forums to give matching lib-rils a try to see if they could confirm. Ditamae and Sino8r, who are also running CM7, have reported back to me that they too have noticed performance improvements, most notably in battery life.
From Ditamae: "Things are still looking good over here. The improvements are slight, but noticeable."
From Sino8r: "Okay, seems all is well with new libs. They have shown some promise, imo. Better battery, signal handoffs, pretty much what all we hoped for."
ATTENTION: I am not responsible if you brick your phone or if it starts a fire in your apartment by using this workaround! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
Procedure:
If you are not running the .19 radio, you can get it from the links above. If you need further flashing instructions get them from this thread.
Once you are running the .19 radio, download the updater and flash through recovery. This will update your radio ril and gps .so files.

While you are in recovery, wipe your cache and dalvick cache and wipe the efs partitions by flashing the Vision EFS partion wipe tool.
Download EFS Partition Wipe Tool
Reboot your device and you're good to go.
NOTE: At first boot, it might take a little longer than usual for you to connect to your local towers since you've wiped your radio data and the efs partitions need to be re-populated with the new data. This also means you'll need to be outside and wait several minutes for a new gps lock as the new data is obtained from the satellites.
Don't forget to hit the thanks button if this works out for you!
Followed all your steps and will keep you posted.
Done as requested and will let you know my experience after a couple of days.
I wanna give this a try and will let you know how it goes. is the efs wipe tool different from the superwipe... i.e. it won't wipe all my data?

For those that have tried it: any improvements in GPS performance?

I didn't notice any change in GPS performance. I'm using your ROM with the updated GPS driver already included in that, which I believe is the same gps.vision.so that was included in the 2.16.531.5 OTA mentioned above.
I have to say I am VERY surprised by the results. I did 3 speedtests before matching rils and 3 after. Results are about 2.5 to 3 times faster in downloads, and about twice in upload. It should be on the same server (according to Speedtest.net app), which makes this great. I will definitely include it in the next release, which at this point might be later today.
edit: a couple more tests brought the download speeds down a little, so it might have been a fluke before, but I still see improvements, just not as big. I will still include it in the ROM, thank you for pointing it out.
edit2: did the new radio roll out with a new gps.vision.so file too? It'd be nice to see if using the new lib gives improvements on gps too.

I'll give it a shot as well. Oddly enough, my completely unscientific testing showed that my WiFi speeds seem to have improved with the new radio, but my "4G" speeds have actually suffered just a tiny bit. And they got *worse* after matching the RILs.
What I did was, with my existing radio (04.12), I ran the Speedtest.net app 3 times each for WiFi and "4G". Then, I installed the 04.19 radio, and did it again. Then once more after matching the RILs.
However, my data speeds have never been great here at the office, so I will do some more testing later, and see what I come up with.
Battery life is a little more subjective, depending on what I am doing with my phone, but I'll see what kind of "feel" I get after running it for a few days.

I'm happy word is getting out... I switched back to the .30 libs for a small stretch and then flashed tsubus' update tonight (along with matching rils for .19... as you know he's matching them for radio .19 by default now, based on your testing), and this time the benefits appear even more distinct. Definitely getting slightly better download speeds and signal alternates faster and more efficiently between Wifi and H/3G. I'm going to check GPS with navigation tomorrow on a long drive. I'll report back, but I'm fairly certain it'll work just fine. I'll wipe battery stats tomorrow and monitor battery... but I kinda already know it's gonna be good. Really glad you brought this to my attention, Ed. Thank you.

I agree... I never had any real gps issues with the exception of first lock in a few weeks without use. I ended up getting GPS Status (free app from market) and reseting gps data and redownloading it. Within 30 seconds, gps satellites are found and all is well. On rare occasions, I would get the notorious loss of signal and would have to toggle gps on or off and/or use good old GPS Status. Those were really minor compared to the horror stories I hear from some of our other HTC Vision users. I finally tried tsubus's idea of using the htc gps.so file and havent had any drop offs. There is still that first lock delay after a new flash or not using it for several weeks but thats normal and nothing GPS Status cant fix in mere seconds. I highly recommend using the gps lib file and gps status for those with gps issues. The radio lib files found here also help with battery life (not huge but a noticable difference) and call quality plus tower to cell handoffs. I was a cell tech (not the guy in the call center lol) for 5 years and am a pc tech and have been for 10 so I usually can tell when something works and is not a placebo effect
Also, Ed and Ditamae are two of the best guys we have here in the G2 section. Please, listen to them. You can trust about 99% of what they say... The other 1% is for their comedic effect

Yes, I followed your suggestions exactly. I haven't had any issues with the GPS (My sense of direction *sucks*, so my GPS gets used quite a bit... ), and I'm still testing the battery life. (Wiped battery stats yesterday and drained the battery to 0%, charged it overnight, and am testing it now.) We'll see how it turns out for me.
After doing these changes I was able to get almost 13 hours of battery life, which is about 5 more hours than I used to get. This is with medium to heavy usage, so I'm happy with this. I'll report back after this bakes for another week or so.
Using virtuous affinity at the moment and not liking the wifi speed at all (2 signals at a distance of 6 meters?)
I remember using one of the MIUI rom or sense rom which gave really good wifi connection, don't know what's the issue but my sister's I9001 is picking wifi at great distance and not mine + the speed is really slow...
DO you guys have a rom in mind which i can flash for better wifi connection?
EDIT: also some suggestions about runny vs bliss would be very appreciatd since i'm not a big sense user..
You can try RCMix3D, I'm always having 4 bars when near my router and a little less when moving away.
Maybe there is something wrong with the WiFi antenna.
The antenna is located in the cover of the battery.
Take out the cover and clean the metal contacts.
Put it back and see if it made a difference.
It's the 1st thing you should try.
If this doesn't help, check for a radio that matches your model, see also if a matching RIL is needed.
This most probably is a radio issue...flash the correct radio based on your current RIL..
Also think it's a radio problem. Flash the correct one and RILs and averything will be ok.
And for example, if you flash something like Virtuous Quattro or IceColdSandwitch, you may get low bars on the indicator, but it doesn't mean the signal is bad.
I'm running ARHD 6.3.2 with 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M Radio at the moment.I always have 3 to 4 bars wifi connection even when im in the room next to my office.
The Rom runs smooth and stable without having any problems at all.
Been using rcmix3d for the last couple of months and wifi reception has always been strong

Dont be fooled by the WIFI indicator bars, As i understand it AOSP based ROMs use a different algorithim to display the strength which results in an apparent lowering of the signal strength as long as it connects and works i play little or no attemtion to the bars.
Yes I would say it's a radio issue, unless it's posted as a bug in the ROM by other users. check the forums for the rom, otherwise, flash new radio WITH CORRESPONDING RIL!!
Rcmix 3d runny v4.0

I agree with @ghostofcain, if your wifi is working fine, don't bother too much about the numbers of bars.
I had my best wifi experience with the AndroidRevolution HD 7.0.0 Rom.
maybe you really should bother about your Radio..
using the 12.28b.60.140eP_26.02.03.15_M3 myself.

best way to see the signal strength is this:
*#*#4636#*#*
and then wifi information -> wifi status
there you've got the signal strength in dB wich is a bit more comparable than "i've got only two bars".
good tip using this test-number;
is the RSSI value the wifi signal strength ?
Yes. RSSI stands for Received Signal Strength Indication. Wikipedia has an article about it if you want more information.
Ok, not sure if my phone is faulty or if the mt4g's wifi tx power is too low as default, or if it's the rom or what. But, does anyone know if our wifi chips support tx power scaling at all, and how exactly to boost the power successfully? Not sure if this method changes between GB or ICS, but if anyone knows, please help a guy out? I've tried editing the iwconfig and twlan.ini to no avail. Am I missing something?

No the wifi on this phone just sucks.
So you know for a fact you can't adjust tx power, or are you just blindly saying it sucks like I am?

I would never take it for a fact but after what over 2 years with this phone I have never seen a way to boost it. Some sense ROMs feel like they have better wifi at the cost of battery life. But after two months of testing in my basement apartment I was never able to find a consistent setting/ROM that worked best. I have read a few post that say the very original stock ROM had the best wifi as well as working 5ghz but HTC messed that up with the gingerbread update.
That's pretty much what I'm learning as we speak. Oh well, its new phone time soon anyway.

Speaking totally anecdotally: I am finding that with most ICS/JB ROMs I've used (about six so far) the reported signal falls off a lot more drastically than with stock, Unity, and other GB ROMs--the difference (in my home) between being able to listen to music down a hallway and around a corner or not. This *seems* to indicate that it could be improved with configuration in the kernel or ROM to boost the allowed power. Some ROMs experience more instability in connection quality if you have custom firmware on your router or have early versions of the wi-fi calling fixes patched in, too.
