So I have been using GB for a long time, only DAILY use, it means no hardcore games, no incredible features etc. Recently I got bored n decided to set my s2 to only 1 core, and to my surprise, it's got A LOT smoother, also more BATTERY FRIENDLY. I'm sure about that!
I guess this happens only when you're a casual user. But I think you should try, as the benefit is too much

I just have mine set 100Mhz-800Mhz with both cores enabled. Obviously it won't play advanced games well but most 3D games work perfectly fine. Also, there's no lag in the UI, even though the CPU clock is reduced. Additionally, the back of the phone (near the camera) doesn't heat up anymore and the battery life is extended. Honestly, it's worth a shot.

simple becoze samsung didnt do there job right
the way the 2 core work now is 1 core dose it job and the second waits for the first to finish
once the first core finished its job the second core goes into play and the first one wait for the second core to finish befor it start to work again
its the same story in ICS
hope it be fixed in JB
so basicly u have a delay on work
that why 1 core is more effective cuz it dosnt pass jobs to other cores and waist for them to finish
I'm using it now and there is a marked, difference in the, speed and smoothness .I have not notice any slowness in opening apps our browsing I don't do intense 3d gaming so I can't make a comment on that side of usage ....well see how battery usage goes...

Setting one core is very easy on a rooted phone, I guess there's a app to exclusively do that, but I'm using Extweaks here, just set the threshold to enable the 2nd core to 100%, it means the 2nd core wont be actuvated.
It's true that it's much smoother, people, I mean real smoother, I'm not biased or imaginative. For e.g when I open 9gag, a long page and swipe my finger up for e.g. it used to be laggy when the page slows down itself, now that's completely gone! And a lot more. But Im sure this happens only for normal user like me, don't expect u play Asphalt HD and it's smoother!
About the battery, it's just A BIT better, just a bit, maybe about 20' of screen on. I'm really sorry to buy a 2 core phone just to use 1 core now, but see, if it serves your demand better, then why not use it .

I have been messing with my phone a lot, and it's like this: based on what u set, if the cpu threshold is over a number, it will ignite the 2nd core, I think the problem is here, there's something wrong or delay or anything that will cause a lag when the 2nd core join/retreats, although after that with 2 cores it is smooth

Holy sheet, if this is true then it explains all my wonder why it has a lag when I suddenly give the phone a heavy task and vice versa, but this is a stupid way to work, how can't they know that? ??

Just set my CPU hotplug to "second core always off" and what do you know, indeed it did feel smoother.
I'm gonna roll with this for a while and see how it goes.
And that will really stick it to the iSheep that says Android needs fast hardware to run smooth.
Does feel smoother, but the touch responsiveness isn't as good.

As I understand, the operation works like a dual core pc. When the 1st core is loaded say 85% the 2nd core kick in. In this process there should be no lag. 2 cores can handle more information compared to 1 core. This is basic. I maybe wrong but think of it 1 against 2.
Disabling hot plug is a good idea if you're a basic user. For people like me, who uses their phone for playing games, watching "hd" movies, listening music, browsing internet etc. and multi taking all those, the phone becomes unusable. So this guide doesn't apply to all, but it's got a point.

Ok I aint joking but seriously what is the point of overclocking a Desire z/G2. Unless I am running on a slow phone I don't see the point. Stock speed never lags and i haven't seen any difference between 1.5 ghz vs 800mhz.
The only time when 1.5ghz clock speed is useful is when i running quadrant and rubbing its scores infront of my friends face.
There is any areas where you can actually see the performance difference?
bluntly, if you dont see the point of it then you don't need it.
For others, sometimes you run alot of stuff in the background and still want to be able to have your main app perform at its best level.
There is also the minute tweaking of speed and snappiness of the interface. The idea of instant reaction when you open your message app, or your email, or anything.

Ya i know what overclocking is but I haven't found one instances where I needed it to run an app. G2 is already damn fast and it runs android with no lag but I really see no point until more demanding ver. of android come out.
I just wanted to see who overclocks their G2 everyday and for what purpose.

Fair question IMHO.
I don't see the difference when overclocking, or rather I don't feel it. Software does make a difference, but not the extra 200-500Mhz. I do feel however the battery drain
It always makes me laugh when somebody asks a legitimate question and you get silly responses like the above 2. It's as if these people feel threatened and have to justify that they are more knowledgeable than the op. The facts of the matter are most of the tweaks, mods and alterations are wholly unnecessary in the real world.
If you don't feel like it makes it better then you don't have to use it. I use it because I feel it makes everything just a little snappier and more instant. If you don't notice a difference that's fine. It's probably trivial for me to notice the little hang ups but I can't help it.

For me there's several reasons. For the most part, the reason for oc is because you can. But there are practical reasons as well. For example, with the stock ROM running at 800MHz, you're stuck with that. With an oc kernel and using SetCPU or built in clock settings in CM, you can adjust it as needed. Gonna play a game? Bump it up to 1GHz or so. Done with said game? Take it back down to 800MHz. But it's not all about oc. Sometimes there's a need to underclock. Getting low on battery and don't have a charger near by and need to squeeze another hour or two out of it? Maybe take it down to 768MHz or 600MHz (if you're running Pershoot's kernel).
Dungeon Defender:
800 mHz : not fun, laggy
1.5 gHz : fun, graphic are more smooth

Because I can
Because sometimes I do notice the difference in performance of the UI and some applications (wait for Sense 3.0 etc...)
Because I also use it to underclock.
Like everything else, a lot of it is perception. My wife cannot see any difference between our normal cable channels and the HD ones. I can (or am I just trying to convince myself that I can?). Oh well.
Finally some practical and helpful responses, showing an understanding of the need for information from some people.
here's my experience when it comes to overclocking. keep in mind that, like with your computer, it does vary from user to user... so I'm making these statements from MY experience, not making blanket statements regarding all of our devices:
- if you run multiple homescreens with multiple widgets and ui "smoothness," not just aesthetically, but performance-wise as well, is of concern, mild overclocking becomes necessary.
- if you have several apps running at any given time (in background or foreground) and ui smoothness, same definition as above, is of concern, mild overclocking becomes necessary.
- if you run any iteration of a sense rom in any configuration and ui smoothness is of concern, mild overclocking becomes necessary.
- if you run PSX/N64 emulators and you don't want audio distortion or general lagginess, more aggressive (in my case, 1209 is a safe speed for maximizing performance without having a drastic effect on battery life) overclocking becomes necessary.
on AOSP builds, especially gingerbread-based, I don't think there is a necessity for more processing power than what we get from the factory if you're running a relatively slim setup and aren't using something like a PSX/N64 emulator regularly.
I run mine at 1ghz, but I did use 1.2ghz before. I do notice a slight performance difference. Overall tho I don't notice it much. I notice it more when I'm doing multiple things.

I run 1.1 because it is noticably faster. Everything opens faster and works smoother. My wife has a stock G2 and when I grab it to look something up on the web or to use maps when we're out, I instantly notice how mucher slower hers is.
Works for me so I use it.
I notice a definite performance boost on mine, but it also depends on which kernel/ROM you use. I was running meXroid for a few days and found that it got extremely laggy even overclocked with Flippy's kernel built in (1.9Ghz), plus my battery was dying faster than a Chuck Norris joke. PyroMod has always been reliable for me and I flashed back to 2.0 earlier and it's just as reliable and power-saving as ever.

Today i noticed an owner of SGS2 mentioning an app called "2nd core" that works with the SGS2s that have a Tegra 2 processor.
Here's the description of what the app does:
[ Features ]
*Set on boot
Change mode what you selected automatically on boot time.
Menu > Settings
[ Modes ]
*Dynamic Hotplug Mode
Default. Recently, mobile multicore CPUs turn off extra core(s) to save battery life when system is not busy and only use 1 core.
They turn on extra core(s) when system is busy. so system use all cores again.
*Single Core Mode
Use 1 core always. A extra core is shut down. It makes battery life longer but performance is decreased.
*Dual Core Mode
Use 2 cores always. Performance is increased but battery life is shorter than others.
*Available kernels
Lulz Kernel Build 15 and over.
Unfortunately, it's only compatible with the SGS2 with the appropriate kernels but i was wondering if it's possible to get this ported for our phones?

Why buy a dual core phone if you wanna tweak it to using only one? That's plain stupid.
Not to mention how the Atrix got a bigger improved battery than that of the sgs2, 300mah to be exact. This phone is built for bith performace and efficiency thecway it is and cm7 improves that even more. No need for such an app IMO.

I always thought dual core phones were more battery efficient vs single core phones. When handling tasks, two "brains" are better than one "brain". The workload is divided in half thus meaning less power used, no?

Sounds great and dude don't flame on him that's a great idea why have the the phone working so much when you're not using it.Most apps aren't even optimized for the two cores except for a very small amount and some games.I would like to be able to have one core running until I decide to watch some HD video or play some graphic intensive games and then disable the app for that period of time.This would extend battery life and you can still get performance when you need it why have it running full blast all day if you're at work and can't be playing with your phone???? makes no sense...just saying,especially with people who Overclock and stuff like that more battery efficiency is always a +

2. SGS2 have SLCD+ (more energy efficient) compared to Atrix's Pentile Matrix, which consumes way more battery.
3. Plain stupid? Developers who have had an ingenious way to massively improve battery life by suppressing one core WHEN THE CORE IS NOT IN USE/ WHEN NOT NEEDED are plain stupid? God knows how you got 111 thanks!
4. With CM7 and without MotoBlur, the battery life has improved but not by much and battery life is 8-16 hours on CM7 depending on how much i use it. If this is what you call energy efficient, may God save the queen!
5. If you have nothing to contribute in terms of an intellectual debate, don't bother posting.

So either I agree with you in this or I simply shouldn't post? Thank God you're not a mod or anything for that matter.
Second off, again I'll say it. Disabling a core in a two core phone is in fact a stupid idea. I recognize how much work such an app would take but its plain stupid. Why? Because as it is, genius, the phone only uses the two cores on high frequencies e.g:800, 1000...etc. And those CANT be reached unless the phone is being played with, other than that you've got one hell of a problem that no app, rom or kernel would fix I'm afraid.
As for the thanks no, I've got them for helping out and lending a hand in this great community. Which is something I'm sure you'll never do/understand.
And as far as cm7 goes, it gives me and many others a full day 24-28 hours on a single charge. So I'd look more into what eating my battery than into disabling my phone if I were you. (Thank God I'm not)

Yea man it would be cool although we gotta take into consideration thetime it would take to develop an app like this for the atrix.....I doubt it would be easy and I'm sure it would take time for a Dev to put it together mayb if people are down to donate a little it might be an incentive....we'll see

That's correct, the atrix is doing this already thanks to faux's custom kernel. (All though I thought this was a function of the tegra2 chip, but maybe it had to be enabled which has been done through the kernel?)
Either way this app is not needed unless you want to micro manage what the kernel is already doing.

It does without the custom kernal download cpu gauge nd ull see its offline sometimes but jus touching the screen turns both cores to max.

I would love to know how many people have hardware bricked their xplay through extreme Overclocking. You will hear many warnings about bricking your phone through OCing on the forums but I don't know of one person who has actually done it. I always feel a little uncomfortable when I OC my devicedue to the fear of hardware failure.
Ive been running mine overclocked to 1.5Ghz for about 24hrs now with no issue
Between 1.2 and 1.5 are the safe operating parameters for the Xperia Play. It differs from handset to handset though. Yours might be unstable at a lower overclock than mine for example.
Best thing to do if you plan on OCing is to try it in increments to find the limit for your Play. If it starts acting unstable at say, 1.5Ghz, then set it to the setting below that (1.4)
1,6 is save for me at 2,0 GhZ it stocked and i have to restart my phone^^

It's like PC CPU overclocking. When you give it too high frequency, it may reboot. Here is potential hazard. If the phone don't turn off, it can burn your phone CPU. But there also (like on PC) many things, that may prevent crash.
You can always use the app Stability Test from Android Market to see which OC speed is best for your phone.

1.9ghz with all governors and I/O settings work for me.
Once I select 2.0ghz the phone shuts off. I never changed voltage values. Perhaps a bump in voltage would get me to 2.0ghz?
I'm not so keen on taking such a risk anyway.
I do think not all Xperia Plays are created equally and consider myself lucky to reach 1.9ghz. The only time I overclock it that high is when I'm using N64oid or GTA3 to prevent occasional lag.
I think 1.6ghz is the sweetspot for most phones.

One time that I overclocked mine at 1.9 GHz and let it run a stress test it froze after a while and didn't reboot until I removed the battery, but it didn't get damaged even though it got pretty hot. Weird...

No, I put OC in the kernels as I understand people use over locking. However, I don't offer any higher that 1.6GHz as higher than that dramatically reduces the lifespan of the device.

I have cooked a few graphics cards in my time so never push my play more than 1.6 ghz I dont want this badboy to break in any way
I have to use 1.6 using doomkernal with smartass. If I go any higher then that, Dolphin Mini won't load properly :/
So who has run their phone at 1.4ghz or above for say a year or more?
My PC has been running an OC of about 30% for about 2 years. I know it will shorten the lifespan of my hardware, but who will keep a PC for 10 years anyway. It will be a dinosaur by then.

I don't see the point of overclocking all the time... for battery saving if nothing else...(?) Maybe the preinstalled R800i UK stock ROM is better and less bloated than what some people get, but 1GHz with the Snapdragon is fine for general use... web browsing, Shadowgun, Asphalt 6, FIFA, Riptide ... all ran well when I wasn't even rooted. Those games are sold for our phones anyway...
But 1.7GHz is definitely over the limit for me as well. Freeze / reboot after a few minutes.

I mean- one minute I was happily running 4.1.2, the latest Smooth Rom, coupled with Motley a11, with the GPU clocked at 520Mhz, and the CPU at 1.6Ghz. And playing games.such as NFS Most Wanted and NOVA 3 was... Acceptable. Just about smooth enough to enjoy (20-25 FPS). And the next minute, I'm running 4.2 stock, with 100% stock frequencies for every aspect of the tablet, and gaming is soooooo darn smooth!!! (30-40 FPS). I mean- what the actual hell have Google pulled here??

Overclocking GPUS and CPUs doesn't always mean you're getting the best performance out of your device.. In a lot of cases it can actually cause no performance increase or worse performance.
Especially at a OC of 1.6 and a GPU at 520.. I can almost guarantee your device was getting throttled down for thermal protection while gaming..
I hope you are right. But i don't see why it would not have used all cores before, it depends more on the application using threads properly.
Will definitely try some games when i get home, wish we had a Nexus 7 at work but they preferred an iPad mini for 7-8 inches app testing

Glad you said it, peeps still think an overclock = performance when in most cases a max overclock will hurt more than it helps, well unless you break out the liquid nitrogen.. happy days.

off topic but how you getting on with the ipad mini? Is the screen as bad as they say? not that im saying the N7 screen is good or anything its passable at best.

Nvidia recently made some improvements to their Linux driver, claiming "double the performance."
Maybe some of those improvements made it into the Tegra 3 driver for Android?
I have not tried any games on 4.2 yet, can anyone confirm what the OP said?
Yeah I am aware that over-clocking rarely means performance increase. Its just fun to experiment sometimes and see for yourself

It's slightly faster with some games, but I wouldn't call it major or anything.

I got no performance improvement on Antutu, Egypt HD or Classic.
Neither did I. But I imagine those apps will soon receive an update to take advantage of 4.2?

Oh dear, if you call 30-40 FPS a major increase then i worry about android gaming. Its 2012. 60 FPS should be the standard frame rate by now. games should be as smooth as project butter. This is why i jumped ship from windows phone to the galaxy s3. i wanted more power to run these games properly. sadly, a lot of them dont. I bought need for speed most wanted and hope it would run at 60 fps. it dosnt unless there is something wrong with my S3. Why do android owners think that 30 fps is acceptable in this day and age of dual and quad core processors?

I can't tell you how many fps Need For Speed has on the S3 but I'd say it runs damn fast. A lot faster than on my N7 (still 4.1.2).
60 fps or 30 fps boils down to less detailed graphics or more detailed graphics on the same hardware. If you ask me, I take more details @30 fps then cheesy graphics @60 fps.

each to their own, perhaps your attitude is why developers cant be bothered to make or optimise android games to their full potential. should my quad core S3 be running games as smoothly as the same game on the dual core iphone 5? yep. do they? nope. im pretty sure that the S3 is capable. poor optimization i suspect. as an example, i bet need for speed most wanted is smoother on iphone5 than the S3 version? likely running at 60 fps but with the same graphics, same with Nova 3? FIFA 12? list goes on.

and here i thought people could only notice about 24fps... everything is smooth for me (except for spiderman) and im still on 4.1.2...
p.s can you tell me why my n7 wont update to 4.2? it notifies me theres an update and i click reboot&install, and it, i think, starts installing but something happens, and it just reboots with 4.1... thanks in advance

thats what people keep saying but .if you have two copies of the same game one running at 24fps and the other running at 60fps and have them side by side. then you can easily tell the difference. Also JB, project Butter allows the UI to Run at 60fps, as they say, buttery smooth. if a person could not have be able to tell the difference between 24fps and 60 fps then why did they bother with project butter? there is a huge difference between the smothness of jelly bean compared to Gingerbread, or even ICS on some of the phones which cant quite handle ICS. thats why I want the games to run at 60fps...we have the technology and power with android now......
It has been more than 2 years since the launch of the S2. And more and more people are moving onto newer phones everyday.
So a thought came to my mind. What can we do with our old S2?
Then I thought, How about a "Media Player Custom ROM"? A custom ROM that focuses/optimises on media playing capabilities. Any developer that comes up with this I think would be a massive hit.
I would definitely carry a dedicated music/video playing Galaxy S2 along with my primary phone, just to save juice on my primary.

I would think of using (this is just a idea)
Stock ROM (4.1.2) debloated, odexed.
Get a stock ROM debloat the whole thing rip even the dailer and messaging off the device. Find a way to disable all radios even Wifi (cus who needs that to listen to music) create some custom launcher that would take over the whole UI. Tied into the launcher perhaps MX Player (it can play everything) for videos movies, Google Play Music for music (duh) and something like Media Rescan to enable media scanner after transfering media to the device. Well thats at the system level. At the kernel level perhaps we can seriously underclock the CPU and GPU. My device can run snoothly on 800MHz dual core so maybe we can use something like 500MHz single core while it turns on the other core when needed(hot plugging) GPU can also underclock a lot. Not sure how mich though 267MHz (stock) seems too much... We all know that stock ROM has he best screen on time and also give the best deep sleep drain so withe device only left with some media apps and so seriously underclocked we must get some beastly battery life xD
