4.2 Update- MAJOR Gaming Performance Increase - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After updating to 4.2 via using the toolkit to download and flash google 4.1.1 factory image, then updating to 4.1.2 via OTA, then flashing the 4.2 update via recovery, I have noticed something very special...
Gaming. Oh my god. Gaming. What happened? What the hell happened? I mean- one minute I was happily running 4.1.2, the latest Smooth Rom, coupled with Motley a11, with the GPU clocked at 520Mhz, and the CPU at 1.6Ghz. And playing games.such as NFS Most Wanted and NOVA 3 was... Acceptable. Just about smooth enough to enjoy (20-25 FPS). And the next minute, I'm running 4.2 stock, with 100% stock frequencies for every aspect of the tablet, and gaming is soooooo darn smooth!!! (30-40 FPS). I mean- what the actual hell have Google pulled here??
Before its mentioned- I've checked. Both of the games mentioned still have the full Tegra Effects enabled, just as they were when they were running under 4.1.2.
My verdict is that when the games were running under 4.1.2, they weren't running on all cores available. Maybe just two, or perhaps even just one! Is it possible that Google have now enabled all the cores available to applications? If so- why wasn't it like this before?
What are your thoughts people?

Overclocking GPUS and CPUs doesn't always mean you're getting the best performance out of your device.. In a lot of cases it can actually cause no performance increase or worse performance.
Especially at a OC of 1.6 and a GPU at 520.. I can almost guarantee your device was getting throttled down for thermal protection while gaming..

I hope you are right. But i don't see why it would not have used all cores before, it depends more on the application using threads properly.
Will definitely try some games when i get home, wish we had a Nexus 7 at work but they preferred an iPad mini for 7-8 inches app testing

lol edit srry

Yeah you're probably right. But even on stock kernel, I wasn't getting the smoothness I am now

Glad you said it, peeps still think an overclock = performance when in most cases a max overclock will hurt more than it helps, well unless you break out the liquid nitrogen.. happy days.

Nvidia recently made some improvements to their Linux driver, claiming "double the performance."
Maybe some of those improvements made it into the Tegra 3 driver for Android?
I have not tried any games on 4.2 yet, can anyone confirm what the OP said?

Yeah I am aware that over-clocking rarely means performance increase. Its just fun to experiment sometimes and see for yourself

It's slightly faster with some games, but I wouldn't call it major or anything.

I got no performance improvement on Antutu, Egypt HD or Classic.

Neither did I. But I imagine those apps will soon receive an update to take advantage of 4.2?

Oh dear, if you call 30-40 FPS a major increase then i worry about android gaming. Its 2012. 60 FPS should be the standard frame rate by now. games should be as smooth as project butter. This is why i jumped ship from windows phone to the galaxy s3. i wanted more power to run these games properly. sadly, a lot of them dont. I bought need for speed most wanted and hope it would run at 60 fps. it dosnt unless there is something wrong with my S3. Why do android owners think that 30 fps is acceptable in this day and age of dual and quad core processors?

I can't tell you how many fps Need For Speed has on the S3 but I'd say it runs damn fast. A lot faster than on my N7 (still 4.1.2).
60 fps or 30 fps boils down to less detailed graphics or more detailed graphics on the same hardware. If you ask me, I take more details @30 fps then cheesy graphics @60 fps.

each to their own, perhaps your attitude is why developers cant be bothered to make or optimise android games to their full potential. should my quad core S3 be running games as smoothly as the same game on the dual core iphone 5? yep. do they? nope. im pretty sure that the S3 is capable. poor optimization i suspect. as an example, i bet need for speed most wanted is smoother on iphone5 than the S3 version? likely running at 60 fps but with the same graphics, same with Nova 3? FIFA 12? list goes on.
.

i wish i had 4.2...
and here i thought people could only notice about 24fps... everything is smooth for me (except for spiderman) and im still on 4.1.2...
p.s can you tell me why my n7 wont update to 4.2? it notifies me theres an update and i click reboot&install, and it, i think, starts installing but something happens, and it just reboots with 4.1... thanks in advance

thats what people keep saying but .if you have two copies of the same game one running at 24fps and the other running at 60fps and have them side by side. then you can easily tell the difference. Also JB, project Butter allows the UI to Run at 60fps, as they say, buttery smooth. if a person could not have be able to tell the difference between 24fps and 60 fps then why did they bother with project butter? there is a huge difference between the smothness of jelly bean compared to Gingerbread, or even ICS on some of the phones which cant quite handle ICS. thats why I want the games to run at 60fps...we have the technology and power with android now......

Making my Evo any faster?

So I've been messing around with different roms and kernels for the past few weeks and finally settled on CM6 6.1.1, and the snap 7.6 bfs kernel, for stability and speed. I turned on the turbo mode with snap, OC'd to 1152mhz (freezes at 1192), killed all apps, and ran quadrant.
[Picture of a 2330 benchmark screencap was supposed to go here, but I don't have eight post haha]
I know thats pretty good, my scores average from 2100-2350, but I'm looking to make it even quicker. What can I do?
Thanks!

Don't use Snap 7.6 on CM6.1.1, just use the stock kernel. The new kernel built in with CM6.1.1 is much better, Snap 7.6 is pretty old.

Benchmark scores don't matter. I don't even check them anymore. Wether I get a 1400 or 2200 its still gonna dial a number at the same speed. Im not playing call of duty on my phone or anything. I want efficiency.
A benchmark does not actually show how fast your phone is....
Cyanogen himself stated this.
quadrant scores =/= to your phone being 'fast'.
But if you care about synthetic benchmarks then you could trick your file system into giving you quadrant scores in the 3000+ range.
by the way thanks for posting this in the relevant subsection of the evo forum dedicated to development this will absolutely further the development of android.
Yeah man, don't worry about benches. If you want to brag about how high it is just PhotoShop it. It's all about smoothness and real world performance/battery life for me. Just find what setup works best on your phone
Edit: and this goes in the q and a section

I couldn't agree more, how instant can a phone get? Theres a point where speed wont be relevant anymore and its pretty damn close to it already. In my eyes efficiency is the future, doing more with less is something im looking forward to.

Also keep in mind that the EVO's Snapdragon CPU was never a problem, it's still competitive even with the newer CPUs (with the exception of the upcoming A9's both single and especially dual core). Most of the "hacks" that raise the Quandrant score over 2000 are just that, hacks. They manipulate the other tests (non-CPU specific ones) to raise the score and make you think that you've just achieved some kind of new level of performance when in fact you'll see pretty much no difference.
Over clocking will help a little but like I said the problem isn't the CPU; a lot of the lag you may see on the EVO is because of the GPU. Nobody has figured out out how to overclock the GPU so over clocking the CPU will make no difference with the GPU. There have been some improvements in the drivers and if you're running CM or MIUI, you already have them. Gingerbread slightly improves some of the core graphics in Android so you'll see a boost over pre-Gingerbread Android but I think what we should all be waiting on is for the new Adreno 200 GPU drivers that Google will release when the OTA 2.3 update for the N1 drops. It wont magically make our EVO's into Nexus S' or anything but I wouldn't be surprised to see a noticeable boost in performance.
Oddly enough, I'd rather have the transition animations that come with some of the custom ROMs, even if they take longer. They provide a much more "fluid" experience. I don't like the jarring, speed-driven, animation-free transitions that come with stock ROMs, because they lack polish. As soon as I saw videos of those animations, I was in love. LOL. Seriously though, lag and lack of animations (which consequently actually help hide lag and load times) are the two things I see holding back the polish of Android. Just as an example (not trying start a flame war here, people), look at the animation when going from portrait to landscape in iOS. Then look at Android's lack thereof. THAT is what Android needs-to actually FEEL faster, not necessarily BE faster. So try something like that if you want the phone to feel more fluid instead of just achieving raw benchmark speed. Again, just my opinion (kind of sad that I feel the need to put that disclaimer in every post lately).

Grand theft auto 3 on desire

Hi folks,
i just downloaded the version from android market, but it hangs up on loading screen.
I wondered if anyone got it to work?

Hi mate I unlocked the market place with chainfire and downloaded it and it hangs After the video is played but on YouTube there's a lad who had it working on stock 2.3.5 htcs latest update for our phone I've tried it got stuck with hboot finally got back to 98 and I can't still get it work

Got it running but removed it again. It just runs to slow on a Desire(on my Desire).
It's like driving cars in slow motion with 1 fps.
So I guess there's no point in trying this!
Thanks to all of you!
It's laggy as hell... Some shaman dances and magic spells seemed to increase fps from 1 to 5-6, yet still impossible to play)) Well, maybe Rockstar will concider optimizing GTA3 for single-core devices...
Sadly Desire can't play this game, its hardware just isn't powerful enough. Also installed it on GF Samsung Galaxy S2 and it works super smooth.
I download it now, it has 430mb, almost certainly it will be very laggy, same like Gameloft HD games.
yep did 2 missions but it ****es me up.. like the pre poster said 1fps its laggy and makes no fun to play it on the desire..
waiting for my new sgs2
My Desire S runs it fine!
Wow, I guess the 2nd gen CPU and GPU must make a heck of a difference!

Just use this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305060 and set it for hard gaming, and use chainfire and set it like the picture, and overclock ur device to the max.
It works for me. Sometimes it's a bit laggy but it's very playable.
P.S. the chainfire setup is only for desire, might want to select "reduce textures" instead of "unroll". But on the desire it works great.

Yeah, i take back what i said before
It was smooth and all, for a bit, but after playing 15mins or so, the game begins to lag...
I tried OC to 1.5Ghz, but it doesnt make much of a difference
I'm on 1.0. I loaded 1.1, it works, but crashes after 5 minutes gameplay. I have to reboot my phone.
I don't see a performance inprovement in 1.1 tbh.
Watch a video of it on the Samsung galaxy tab 8.9 or ipad2 and you can see how liquid smooth it is!
There are higher graphics! You can see the headlights of cars, refelctions etc, seems much better and smooth!
Wonder how it holds up on the ipod touch4, it has 1ghz cpu and only 256mb RAM, less than your Desires. I saw on my Desire S, it takes up a hefty 153mb RAM when running!

Yep its time like these where I want October 2012 to come. Thats when I can get new phone lol But in saying that apart from gaming Desire still holds its own with even the big new phones. Who would of fort we can run sense 3.5 and now getting worked on ICS sense 3.5 time are still great, just not when playing some games lol.
I had less than 5 fps -.-'
It run smooth in the begining...
after entering the game.......
Everything change..........
slow...............
Desire is not suitable to play this...
Although there is some way to play it smooth (OC and chanfire), keep your desire to be long lasting
It lags very much. Desire's hardware is not enough for this game.

Opinions about nexus 10

Is the nexus 10 truly a good tablet? I was looking on you tube and the benchmarks are really low for the 1.7 ghz processor.
So that is why I'm asking if it's fast when you use it? Is it efficient? Does it multi task well? Is the screen resolution as good as they claim? Numbers don't mean a thing that's why I'm asking you the users. Thanks to anyone who has any input. If I haven't ask something and someone has done input I'll take that too. The benchmarks just confused me as I know they aren't everything. But my stock HTC evo 4g lte scores1 third higher at 1.5 ghz. Again, thanks

Well i can tell you the screen is amazing. Probably the best out there. Ive only had mine for about a week now but so far everything works great. Multitasking is fine and its really smooth. Games work great for me like gta vice city with no lag at all. Im using stock rom and stock kernel. Its been great so im not even going to unlock it. You also get the new updates right when theyre out and you dont have to wait. Ive seen lots of other threads like this and i can say most users will agree with this.

Look at some benchmarks in the KTManta and Trinity kernel threads. Custom kernels are the way to true performance on this tablet as it lets us modify the very conservative thermal throttling settings that come stock, as well as give undervolting capability to help save battery and be less hot, and allow for overclocking too if you want even more performance on top. I actually underclocked my CPU to 1GHz just now and did an overclocking on the GPU and still scored higher than anyone else's 3DMark scores using stock speed of 1.7GHz and 533MHz GPU. The Nexus 10 is among the top devices in any benhcmark there is right now when you start using a custom kernel. So ya, its very fast. I love this tablet.
I can break 20,000 point in AnTuTu now
And someone else broke the 10,000 point mark in 3DMark. And I get a 58.3 frame per second AVERAGE in the high quality test of Epic Citadel. The only reason citadel benchmark is at that (which is basically perfect anyway) is because vsync caps the FPS to 60, so the score would be much higher but it just isnt possible get any higher. lol
It's awesome...

Bought Asphalt 8 - Heavy Lag on GS4-i9500

Just bought Asphalt 8, honestly expected it to run flawlessly on my Black GS4-i9500 but that was not the case. Installation was fine, but game is really laggy and the graphic is kind of messed up and unstable. It's like the graphic card is not powerful enough to run it at full speed. I'm playing on default settings and I made sure there is no other application running besides Airborne. My phone is a genuine one and have not rooted it. It's the same for Minion Rush and Asphalt 7.
What might be causing this problem according to you guys and is there any way to fix this?
Many thanks.

Had no lags like this on stock. Everything ran flawlessly.
but smearing issue bothered me so I rooted it and installed perseus kernel. Everything is fast as hell. And using wanam rom.
try a factory reset. Then update to latest ota. And test again.
There is no such thing called "lag" on my I9500, on GE Port or stock Touchwiz.
But yes, my phone is rooted and got swapped external to internal.
Probably there's something wrong in your beloved storage.

It is the way it is.
Forget these guys who says Asphalt 8 run flawlessly on I9500/I9505, it doesn't. Flawlessly is 60fps all the time. S4 can't deliver that.
It doesn't matter which ROM you are using, they do little to no help on GPU performance, unless when you are OCing the GPU.
Just make sure you don't have background apps running.
For Asphalt 8 on I9500 expect a frame rate on High Quality averaging on 30fps, with peaks on 40fps and dips on 15fps.
I9505 is a few frames worse.
If you really want have a gain on FPS, you should have root, be on Android 4.2 and change the resolution to let's say 720x1280.
got ard 30fps, can't say perfect but good enough to play. Anyway racing game don't require very high fps.
If you experience HEAVY LAG then something must be wrong.

Sorry I'm a little bit out of the main subject.
Is there any way to show FPS when gaming on android devices ? I looked in playstore and there's none.
To get back to the subject, you should see what's wrong with your phone .. Asphalt runs well on S4 as it's running on IPAD 4 (but the bigger screen makes it better experience really) .. S2 also runs it well with medium graphics.
I thought the 3d titles were a bit laggy or jerky but played on iPhone 5 and we're the same smaller screen was rubbish.

It is paid though... It used to be cheaper, I paid U$ 1.00 (maybe I bought it on specials days, don't know...) but now it is around U$ 4.00.
It shows fps on screen. It affects the performance a little bit when active, something around 5%-10%.

I had the same problem with my S4, I noticed that it only happened when playing using the Bumper Cam view.
Since switching to the hood view its never frozen or stopped once.
been playing asphalt 8 for 2 weeks now, never had a problem.

Wow. All this time, I've been thinking that it is running at 1080. Are you sure its at 720? I mean have you tried to run the game at 720p and noticed any difference?

Works fine for me. Never had a problem

i have no problem in my i9500 and i9505 i am using wanam rom in both
Somethings weird on your phone... To everyone, the Adreno 320 and PowerVR SGX544 are pretty much the same in performance. On that note, I'm playing Asphalt 8 at around 40-50 FPS. No frame drops at all. Using a Canadian SGS4 so its a S600. Running Broodplanks Pure AOSP. Its most likely the best ROM for gaming. Gets 29000 in Antutu without any over clock.

here asphalt 8 is just fine..
around 40-55 fps. No overclock.

I just bought my new Nexus 4 and i tested it and it has really low score in 3dmark! what is the problem...?

I just did that. I bought it, turned it on, updated it to Android 4.3 rebooted it, and ran 3Dmark and this is the score! It was cool and no bacground apps were running. Is it slow because of android 4.3 maybe?

Solution: stop running benchmarks.

The problem isnt the benchmark, it has almost the same gaming performance as my Sony ericsson Live With walkman overclocked to 1.6Ghz!
I played ExtremeG 2 on N64 emulator and game is almost choppy as on my LWW :/ Also i played Danmaku death, and sometimes Fps is better than my old LWW but sometimes its worse >__>
P.S. It looks like it throttled so the score was that low... But still for 10 mins of testing some games that run good on my 1Ghz phone to be able to make the Nexus go to throttle mode and it was baerly warm to the touch...And people say you need around 30mins of heavy gaming to make it throttle... I expected much more from this device. It looks like its custom kernel time.
Wow, now it scored in ice storm extreme almost the same as in ordinary ice storm test while throttling... Didn't know it was going to affect the performance so much...
All these benchmark tests are shiat!
Samsung know how to fake scores, LG and HTC also, the nexus and motorola are clean:

Anyway, try to play FIFA 14 on your Sony Ericsson Live....[dead], I don't think you could run this game and if so it never be smooth and fast as its on Nexus4.
