Thank you to the devs and community - Epic 4G General

So last night I flashed CM9 on my mom's Epic 4g after she had complained about repeated problems with FC09. This isn't a "thank you" to the devs of CM9 in particular, although you certainly deserve it.
It might help if you know my history. I was a 0-day adopter of the Epic 4g. I had been on a local carrier with a crap dumb phone for quite a while. My family made the choice to move to Sprint and on August 31st I picked up the Epic 4g. First impressions were ok... it had power (at the time), but the OS was fairly buggy. I think it shipped with DG27... Anyway, it was a great phone, with a few flaws. I saw the initial development, I saw ACS form, Bonsai, Frankenstein, Quantum, and Midnight. I spent a considerable amount of time on the Eclair version of Syndicate Rom (I forget the name now), and moved on to the DK28 Midnight ROM until finally the ACS version of Froyo came out. Between a gingerbread theme, Launcher Pro, and ACS I was able to get a phone finally in March of 2011 that performed well, was stable and looked clean.
I really started to get sick of the hardware at this point, the screen on my Epic was horribly loose. It made the phone feel cheap and flimsy. I was waiting for something, May 8th I found out what exactly... I ended up picking up a Nexus S 4g a day later on the 9th off-contract (because I hated the epic that much by then). I sold off the epic, my game-gripper, and my spare battery... It was a pretty big decision and a pretty significant financial loss... Probably a mistake after enjoying using one again so much last night.
Anyway, I've had my Nexus S 4g and helped my family learn to live with their Epics. I've kept up slightly with the Epic community and have seen the kinds of changes that have gone on. It's incredible how much things have changed. It's incredibly to think that when I sold my Epic we hardly had CM6 rom that'd boot. CM7 was a dream and no one even knew what ICS would bring (or whether it'd be 2.4 or 4.0 or 3.3).
So like I said, last night I pulled out an out-dated version of Odin, flashed my mom's phone back to EB13 and ran one of the first "one-click" root exploits available. With ClockWork 2.5 installed I flashed the 5.0.2.7 CWM over it, and then started flashing CM9 finally. It was absolutely incredible seeing an Epic finally boot with CM9.
Seriously, this isn't for the CM9 team, it's not for anyone in particular, it's for the community... really, thank you. You've breathed life into a phone I had given up on a year ago, and my family had recently given up on... that is until they tried it with a new fresh perspective that is touchwiz-free.

Full agree with OP. CM9 is the best thing to happen to my Epic 4G.

Epic & iPhone get Froyo!

Pretty sad that we finally got Froyo (albeit unofficial) the same week that iPhone did.

Yep, i did. Kinda interesting that iPhone got froyo before we did.
Thought there'd be a few opinions on it. If not, no big deal, that's the way forums work. You post, if people want to talk about it, they do, if not it goes away (or people who dont want to talk about it can be a smartass and keep it at the top). Not like i posted in the dev section.
wowwww iphone has froyo and my epic 4g still doesn't officially have it. (havnt made the jump into rooting yet)

I was pretty ambivalent about froyo until I learned that it was on freakin' iphones already.
Oh well.. "end of the month" they say..

i am running the leaked 2.2.1, it works good , just a little laggy, on the home screen,
i installed this on epic 4 g
the down load speed is just a little better
the battery life is a lot better
every thing seems to work
it is very sable
i would say it is a good flash

[Q] ICS update for R800x, wonder if it will be sooner then other X-PLAYS

I was thinking since Verizons Xperia PLAY does not use the TimeScape and uses Vanilla Gingerbread ROM. I'm wondering if Verizons ICS update (if it does come out) would be released much sooner then the rest of the Xplays as SE would not have to mash their custom overlay to it. I wold imagine that with the some time and the bug testing and whatnot you wold think that the update should be pretty pain free. Just my thoughts.
Doubt it, they already stated that the Xperia Play models will get the update between April and May. They wouldn't push it out twice for the same device in my opinion.
the problem with the r800x is that verizon is in control of the updates, and so far they have done a bad job of it...we still don't have 2.3.4...
it makes sense due to no custom overlay, but we are talking about verizon...
i hope (i know its not true) but hope that they stopped doing 2.3.4 so they can push 4.0 out faster....haha i know
Keep dreaming...
If you look at the history of going from 2.3.2 - 2.3.3 - 2.3.4 your model has always been last to get the update even though it is bare bones android.
At best you should wait for ICX to release a CDMA version.
Or wait for CM9
It would be waaaayyy faster than waiting for Verizon.
Btw CM9 will be here by the end of next month
cm9 would be sweet, but just like verizon, cdma seems to be the big sucking point and we probably won't get cm9 for a long time either...

FXP has been pretty good on release schedules for CM7 updates, and is planning on releasing for the Play. It may be another 2-3 weeks after the GSM release, but CDMA will follow up.

Even my boyfriend who works for Verizon says they don't give a crap about supporting their customers. I'd be surprised if you guys ever saw an official ICS update.
No worries though, we have awesome devs =D
Who cares anyway? Verizon doesn't owe us anything, they never promised upgrades for the rest of your phone's life.
And like anything else in life, if you really want something, do it yourself, instead of relying on some government or corporation to do it for you.
Isn't that what xda is all about? Getting what we want, regardless of what the phone companies say?

To ALL developer's,

I wanted to tell you guys, that you guys are pure awesomeness. I bailed on the Epic 4g a while ago when the development was at a standstill, so I went and got a HTC Evo 3D. I kept my Epic 4g, and bought the evo 3d, and I thought I was on to better, and newer things. I didn't think the Epic 4g's development was going to go anywhere, BUT BOY, did you developers prove me wrong, and I'm sure, many others too. The Epic 4g's development community is pure awesome, to say the least!
Now that I've made the switch to the MTD filesystem, my phone feels like a whole new phone, and I'm sure once all the wrinkles get worked out, it's just gonna blow everyone away.
I know all the tireless hours that go into development, and believe me, literally weeks, and sometimes months or longer, of all day sitting in front of a computer.
I just want to say to all the developers for our Epic 4g, thank you, for all the sacrifices you've made for your love of technology, and it's advancement!
And to all the trolls, who appreciate nothing, and all they do to contribute to our community is ***** and complain, you people, can go kick rocks!
Sorry for the waste of bandwidth fella's...

I've seen that. Always makes me smile.

Spoiled by x10. Now what?

Got my x10 in February of 2011. First smartphone. Started messing with custom ROMs as soon as I brought it home since it came with 1.6. I went through a period where I was flashing a new ROM every few days or at least a few times a month. Settled on the Prime X ROM from Oodie a while back. I hate stock firmware. This is what I have now.

My problem is that I get an upgrade in October, and I was very excited about it until I actually looked into the phones that are available through AT&T. I don't want to pay $200 for an upgrade so the S3 is out. I am trying to decide between Moto Atrix HD, HTC One X, Samsung GS2 Skyrocket, and Xperia Ion. My wife has the Ion already and I like the phone, but not really sure when there will be any custom roms for it. Atrix HD is looking pretty well locked down and same with the One X unless I can get an older one. Very frustrated right now and I guess I am just complaining so feel free to ignore me if you wish.
At this point I feel like just hanging onto my x10 for a while and seeing what develops. I will also be interested to see how my wife's Ion handles when it gets ICS.
Also thinking of just doing the upgrade, selling whatever phone I get, and buying a Samsung Galaxy Nexus from Google. Only problem with that phone I can see is the camera, but 5MP isn't really that bad and I can just get the wife to take all the pics when I am with her anyway.
Oh yeah, I also hate not having a removable battery.
nice story, well from the rom your running I'd say your better off with the htc one x(just what i think)
If you shop around you can find the Galaxy S3 for $99. Radio shack, Wire fly, Best buy etc. You can have them price match the other.

Hey man i reccomend just sticking with your x10 maybe try a little ice crema sandwhic goodness? id wait for the xperia s if i were you lots of developing for the ss,u and sola and acro s i tinkk!!
All good advice. Thanks for that.
I think part of it may be that when i got my x10, there was already a ton of development on this board. 2.1 was out already, then there was the excitement of waiting for the Gingerbread release and the ROMs that came after that. These are all new phones except for the Skyrocket. Maybe it will pick up once they are out longer.
I do like the One X. The board for that phone is weird though, in that there is all of this development, and then you have people with newer devices or who did the upgrade, whose phones have been locked down again. Only things I don't like about that phone are the lack of an SD card slot and non removable battery. Although when I think about it, I have 1GB (465MB usable) internal memory and an 8GB flash drive in my current phone and i don't feel like I have a lack of space now.
Anyway, i still have a month and a half before I can make a decision so who knows? I have been trying out some of the ICS ROMs on my wife's old x10 and if I find one I like I might flash it on my phone.

Happy with AOKP 4.2.2 on SCH-I500

A friend retired her Fassy, indicating that it was dog slow, wouldn't hold a charge, and took foreva to take a charge. She asked me if I wanted to play with it for a bit.
I got it, and kept it off to charge it up - seemed to top off in a reasonable amount to time - not too quick, not too slow. Once charged, I hopped on it and, woah, she definitely had something corrupted.
I went into eff it mode, pulled down all of her pics/vids/audio/dls/snaps/etc. and proceeded to root it and install a recovery. Having only owned my GS3, I have only ever been exposed to 4.x versions of android. With this device having a 2.x flavor onboard, I felt the rush of discovering something old and admiring changes for the better and observing trusted old ways of the wise.
I actually struggled a bit finding a good way to root it and get a recovery installed. I ended up following Section 4 herein and got CWM installed. From there, it was gravy getting AOKP 4.2.2 installed.
I ran some testing over the last few days, just to see how the battery survived this current generation version of Android on some older chassis' hardware. Frankly, I am really surprised that it lasted as long as it did. I kept WiFi on and have a reasonable amount of apps installed (the norm social media, gapps, etc.). I think it is safe to say that her battery and hardware are very likely fine.
Of course, real-world use will predicate a much shorter battery life. But, I think it will work fine for her, for now. And, yes, she wants it back... :crying: I was hoping she would say 'just keep it' as I was looking forward to having another droid to play with, besides my main phone (GS3) that I can't afford to be playing with too much, as it is my link to work here at the home office.
Anyways, wanted to drop a note confirming a positive experience with the Fassy and Android 4.x. Peace. Out.

i was running 4.22 based Jellybro version 7-17(the last one before they stopped developing for it) for a while. Without the devil Kernel, I got battery life of about a day and 8 hours. With 7-19 Devil Kenel I was getting around 2-3 days total. Granted I ran without mobile data turned on but I did use it with Talk and Text plus wifi so without the 3G radio to sap the battery, my results might be a little biased. Also I use 3500 mah batteries.
I am playing with Paranoid Android(4.4 based ROM) on that Fassy and battery life is even better. It;s got some glitches in it though but I like where it;s heading.
Back from the dead
Hi.
I'm trying to resurrect my old samsung fascinate from verizon. It's rooted with EH09 but it won't charge my new battery. Can you post the link for the AOKP 4.2.2 rom you installed?
Thanks,
Devan
this might be what you are looking for.

stay with the 4.22 versions, the 4.3 and 4.4 versions are more experimental and mobile data might not be working correctly or a littlle flaky.
I've been having an extended text issue with Geewiz 4.2.2 so I might give this a look. Thanks.
