help ? W8 slow and fast - Windows 8 General

Hi,
I have had a problem with my laptop for a couple of weeks but it used to be like this when i was on windows 7. I have a compaq presario CQ60 214-em it is a 1.70GHZ intel celeron dual core and 3gb ram and also running consumer preview windows 8 . My problem is from time to time my computer gets very slow and sometimes very fast (like now) sometime when i click on the metro apps for example the email app it hangs on the it boot screen and then goes back to the start same with other apps. i had a look in the task manager when my laptop gets slow and the processor is running at a speed of 0.20 ghz?? and the cpu usage is mostly in the 90's % but when it is running fast it is usually using the full 1.70Ghz .
I was also thinking about going to Windows 8 RTM and do a fresh install but I am looking on torrent sites and it looks like people are having trouble activating. I have included a screenshot for your attention
If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Can anyone help please?

Suggest getting the Enterprise Trial version and try that. It's good for 90 days. You're running an old beta, so the first step is to get the latest code. After that, you're on your own.
BTW, it's dumb to talk of torrenting the RTM on a public forum. The only thing worse than cocktail pirates are ones who can't troubleshoot their own PCs.

[Q] HTC HD2 getting hot running on Android 2.3.4

I have newly purchased an HTC HD2 and switched OS from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Android 2.3.4. I switched OS to experience Android and I really like it. I purchased this phone directly from HTC in UK. Now I have this problem that my phone is getting really hot while using it (whenever I browse my phone, talk over phone, play games or do anything, phone gets hot within 3 mins max). Android is running perfectly well on my phone except the lower back part of the phone is getting really hot (i believe the processor is there). I checked the task manager and found CPU usage minimal. Now what should I do? Can anyone help me on this issue?? I really need help!!
Please download battery booster from the market and activate it Please reply with the temperature!

I solved this myself!
If you wan't links i can't post them so pm me for them!
the answer for everyone else is yes and yes and for the most part drivers from windows 7 also work.
EDIT: apps will be lost but settings and files will be kept.
Some stuff you need to right click and choose compatiblity mode.
FYI the windows phone emulator does some freaky **** to win8 so don't try running it, you've been warned.
Ok thanks!
My installation is stuck on 33%
What should i do?

But windows 8 is not out yet?
You can download a developers preview. Looks quite nice.
Still stuck on 33%...

Would you recommend trying Windows 8 developers preview or should I wait until the official release.
I think it is awesome try it!

what could prevent you from trying?
Install it in a virtual machine for easy installing and easy deleting
OR
create an extra partition and install it there for a realistic performance impression.
win8 is nice but feels more like a mobile phone os than one geared for computers. tied too closely to the ms live services as well, did not like that it would change my live messenger picture when i changed my login image on win8.
if you have a touch screen pc (like the aio's) then this might be more practical, but it doesn't seem to be intended for mouse and keyboard use.
Windows 8 is for the most part, pretty similar to Windows 7.
Most applications and drivers will work.
But so far here's a mini list of applications that aren't working for anyone:
- AIM
- Combat Arms
- Maple Story
(yeah it's a really bad list but hey XD)
How did you manage to upgrade from Windows 7? I don't have the option on Windows 7 Professional.
first. there are some apps which from win7 can not run in win 8.
second. you cant upgrade to win 8 from win 7.
finally. win 8 is great. but it is not stable with some kind of hardware. you should install both win 7 and win 8 to have the best in working and getting exp

I tried out Windows 8 about a month ago and felt that it was a decent experience. Unfortunately for me though it wouldnt find the driver for my wireless card (WRT54GS) so I ended up uninstalling it.
Maybe its me but I don't see the big deal about it. I didnt really use the metro UI and the new changes to explorer didnt make or break the experience, it was just meh.
I'm tempted to try it but having issues with drivers and stuff is too annoying lol.
Hi all!
Well I'm running W8 dev installed in host (not virual) and it works great on my 6 years old computer.
I think it's awesome, it takes lots of memory but it wors so fast.
I was running w7 x86 before trying this and it was quite slow for my comp also for playing (league of legends around 25-30fps). Now I'm running w8 64 and it has been improved from 30-40fps (my graphic card is quite old). Maybe cause it's 64 instead of 32 bits?
My comp is an AMD athlon 64 3800 x2, 2GB DDR, 320GB SATA and nVidia 7800 GT CO
Anyway I recommend for everyone to try it, I've been using it a week from now and I think it's awesome but there're some apps that doesn't works at all of the Metro UI such as Socialité and the Weather app

i installed win8 on my laptop. It is using similar resources to win7.
Win8 is great, but its still very buggy (pretty good for a pre beta)
I am sure it change a lot from now till the release date, but at least we get a picture of what to expect.

Many games not running on Windows 8. Temporary or permanent?

I've spent some time re-installing a lot of games to find quite a few won't work now under Windows 8. Some will just crash on start up and won't boot or give various errors. I've confirmed online others that are experiencing similar issues. I've also noticed that installing framework .net during some game installations fail (not sure if is related or not).
A few examples of games are:
- Super Streetfighter IV Arcade Edition
- Streetfighter X Tekken
- Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
- The Darkness 2
- Rayman Origins (boots but no black screen and audio only)
- Flatout Ultimate Carnage
- Bastion (boots but no black screen and audio only)
- Dead Space 2 (boots but no black screen and audio only)
Does anyone know if these issues will be resolved closer to release through graphics card driver updates or other windows updates? Or will these have to be fixed by individual patches from the game manufacturers themselves? I would hate to think Windows 8 will break many of my games from running.
I've been considering installing Windows 7 on a separate partition just so I can play some of these games that won't run under Windows 8. However I read that you must install the older operating system first, and then install the more recent operating system. If you don't (for example, if you install Windows 7 on a computer already running Windows 8), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them.
Anyone know if that will be an issue?

Not sure I need that. I'm running the latest Windows 8 x64 drivers already right from the Nvidia website. Unless there's a new one that just came out in the last week I missed.

The wddm 1.2 drivers are still a bit too fresh. The wrinkles should sort themselves out after a few more driver releases. Some reports say that the WDDM 1.1 drivers have fewer issues, though you won't get access to any of the new features.
Add Hitman Sniper Challenge to the list.
With previous Windows versions it was possible to e.g. install Windows XP after Windows Vista onto a separate partition (making Windows XP the only bootable system as the Bootloader was overwritten) and then do a Bootloader-Repair from the Vista installation medium which would find both XP and Vista and create a dual boot configuration.
This theoretically should still be possible with Windows 8 although I only tried dual booting with it when installing Windows 8 after Windows 7 so I can't guarantee that it works that way. In the worst case you should be able to get Windows 8 working again by doing a repair installation but when doing such things it's always a good idea to backup important data first.
As for the games: some will have driver issues, some will have issues with version numbers Windows 8 reports which they don't recognize or other Windows 8 behaviors they don't expect (which would make a game patch necessary) and some would likely work when launched in compatibility mode (right click on the Shortcut and navigate to Compatibility and select an older version of Windows).
Also add sleeping dogs to it.
Doesn't work in compatibility mode too. :'(

I know for a fact Dead Space 2 works perfectly. In fact every game I have thrown at it works save for a few games from the Win98 era.
There has got to be something going wrong in a different area on your system.

Nah.... I am one hell of a gamer, and yes 90% games work totally fine on windows 8. But some damn games, such as hp deathly hallows, and a 2012 game, sleeping dogs do not work whatsoever though m using the latest GPU drivers etc.

that might well be your problem then. Some people have reported having to roll back 1 driver version to get some software running.
I have tried certain games on Windows 8 including new and old and all of them worked fine for me. I must say, if a game runs on 7, it should work fine on 8 as well. But if it does not, .exe file that runs game requires some tweaking. But it is ''illegal'' to mess with such files in one sense.

Lags in chome

Hello every1 i installed win 8 about 2 weeks ago and i noticed something really annoying.when i play videos on 720p in chrome (desktop) they lag.Dont dont lag like all the time but they lag for like 1 2 secs and then they start running smooth again.I already check for drivers and i got the newest one.I tried in IE and i dont have this problem but EI sucks big time.I know that my video card is kinda old but with windows 7 i didnt had any problems with videos on youtube even on 1080p.So is there something i can do about those lags?Does any1 else have the same problem as me?
Flash videos or HTML5 (or both)? Can you provide an example link?
All videos lag.Idn if they are html5 or flash. They lag in general at 720p and chrome lags compared to win7 and it consumes more processor power compared to win7 idn why is that..

Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. And like the above poster said, give us a link to a video that lags for you.
BFvsGF chanell all the the videos lag at 720p and with win7 they didnt i gues its from the chrome because a fr of mine got the same problem
I don't know actually, but Chrome on my computer lag like hell since Windows 7. I use IE10 even it lacks a few features (and I really hate that most web pages don't have favicon) Maybe Chrome conflict with my hardware idk, maybe you have conflicting problem like me.

Its probably a chrome thing
My internet is pretty fast downloading with 8mb/sec i got the lattest drivers of my videocard and flash player
Try to reinstall chrome using one of the dev versions. Not as unstable as you would think. Practically as stable as the stable version itself.

Chrome is a memory hog comparte to others like internet explorer.First make sure there arent too many background proccesses and apps on gchrome. Unless your system specs are good enough videos wont run smooth, especially not at 720p.You can do it via task manager and post a screenshot. In the meantime, while we figure out the problem use another browser easy on resources.

Nexus 9 first day- firefox bug

Could not resist buying 32 Gb Nexus 9 at Best Buy today.
Setup went easily. It first downloaded a 300 Mb system upgrade, installed it, then it installed all of the apps currently running on my Nexus 7.
So far, the screen is impressive and the performance seems brisk and quick. This is not going to be, as I first intended, a replacement for the Nexus 7, it is just a different (much bigger) animal.
The new version of Android seems fine, of course I had to mess around to get some normal things done (I did not know where the widgets had gone for one thing), but it seems like it will be good.
It is a bit disconcerting how hot this is running. Battery temp shows over 40 degrees, and the back is warm to the touch. I wonder what that means.
The first real bug/incompatibility is firefox. This was my primary browser on the Nexus 7, as it seemed to be a bit crisper and quicker than Chrome. Well on the Nexus 9, it is unusable. It keeps crashing. I reinstalled it,
but it is still unusable. The good news is that the performance problems with Chrome do not seem to exist on this faster device, so I will use Chrome unless Firefox does whatever needs to be done.
The first Temple Run also crashed and I uninstalled it. I tried Temple Run 2 and that runs fine and looks great on this nice screen.
If anyone else has gotten Firefox working, I'd be interested in that. It did seem to work for a short time, but after I set up gmail, it has been crashing as soon as I tried to enter a few characters into the address bar.
So I have no clue what might be happening.
I am also concerned with the temp because it's basically got the same chipset as the nvidia shield. The nvidia shield gets so hot that it is within a few degrees of melting the circuitry.
Very quick update. Words with friends was also crashing. So i did the normal pc thing and powered off and rebooted. Now firefox is working. Do not know what this means. When this is working though it is pretty awesome.
Bad

Quick, we need a some sort of custom kernel to control cpu voltages/clock speeds
Or an update ..
Have you tried using the Firefox beta?
