I have owned several android tablets. I received my xoom from an eBay auction on Saturday...a 4g model. I spent about two hours getting the unlocked boot loader route and CWM. I then installed the EOS ROM.
I have spent the last couple hours customizing the device getting this software that I wanted on it.
Based on the four hours I have spent with the device all I can say is......WOW.
I purchased on of the first Android tablets...the white pos from China. In fact, i may have had one of the first android tablet specific groups....Slatedroid was spawned from a google group I started.
I say this to say....I've been in this space from the beginning....I know a good tablet when I see one. I boughT and rooted a nook color. Solid but slow I bought the woot gtab...surprisingly slow. They've always been nice...kind of fun....but never really a mainstay for me. I have a convertible tablet PC and I always went back to that, even for basic consumption. I researched tablets for about 4 months this time before i finally pulled the trigger on the xoom. it seems like this Xoom might actually work.
The browsing performance of chrome is fantastic...not much latency at all.
The responsiveness of the Xoom overall is great.
The price put it at a solid value...and I have the option of 4g when I want. It didn't break the bank, so when the next gen stuff comes out I can give this to my wife.
So far...I love this thing. I'm on it all the time...and that's the true test isn't it.
I really don't know how it could be improved...ics is solid...
I'm pumped !
Cheers!
Matt
Damn right! Dude try cornerstone....this thing is like a really sexy PC with it.....such a great value!

You are so right...Xoom is still the best overall tablet. With EOS and ICS 4.0.4 there is none better. I have been using mine constantly for a year and I have no immediate plans to replace it. It just keeps getting better, with the best developers around.
to bad chrome does not support flash otherwise it would be an awesome browser
So what are ya'lls opinions on new units coming down the pipe with higher resolution and better processors.
Personally after looking at the new retina display of an ipad 3rd gen all day, I find it difficult to go back to my Xoom.

Yes...I'm waiting for the hi-res....uber-core...units to come out. But Apple will never get my money. I don't want to discuss that here.
That's why I bought this Xoom used...to save some scratch, and cred with the wife, so I can get the latest and greatest in the fall.
My wife is getting tired of my hand-me-downs. She swears she's taking the next upgrade.

Ugh. There's always gotta be one in the crowd . Yes, Motorola could have invested more in our displays. And I would have paid more for some IPS love. It is what it is...
That white pos from China wouldn't happen to be the Huawei s7 would it? Lol, that was my first tablet back in '10.

My Samsung E4GT has a"dynamic" screen setting that literally burns my retinas...I have to leave it on standard, lol. I love my Xoom screen...seems more natural, not so aggressive. And I'm a painter so I love me some colors! Go figure.

I still use my Xoom, it's on my night stand as an alarm clock

I think it's pretty decent. Should improve after a few cycles.
Looks good! What was your screen on time?
my battery doing great so far. my battery is at 50% right now. over 12hrs. total time so far. check this though, a lil over 6hrs. of screen on time and I still have 50% battery left. wifi left on always. screenshots attached.

OMG! I'm shocked the seas haven't parted or that we haven't found alien life on another planet. Demandarin owning a Samsung tablet is a day I thought I'd never see. I really like it.
H/w: I like the feel of it. it feels solid. it may be made of plastic but doesn't feel cheap. it looks and feels high quality. I have the 16gb. White one. got it from best buy. it was all they had. I might return it and get the 32gb version. its worth the extra 50. we will see as I have 30 days to test it out and decide if I need higher storage one. I'm loving the True stereo speakers. easily the best sound of any tablet or phone. big speakers also. they increased the size of them from galaxy tab 2(saw in a video comparison). Build quality overall very good. the exynos quad core is fast also. I can't do a fair comparison to prime tegra3 because its software wasn't at 100%. but compared to jb on my nexus7(tegra3), this is just as fast if not faster. battery life is great, so far. look at my previous post with screen shots attached. it was on over 12hrs. A LiL over 6hrs. On screen time. I still had 50% battery life yet. IM guessing that 32nm Soc process really helps to keep temps low & stretch battery life out. seems very efficient. wifi performance is stellar. no issues with it at all. plus this supports 5ghz. Band & has channel bonding. impressive
S/w: j/b out the box wouldve been perfect. T/w not as bad as I thought. I got rid of those stock widget boxes like media hub, music hub, etc.. Everything runs very smooth. Ics performs great on this tablet. no anr at all so far. I will go into dev. Options and cut off animations. the ui will be even faster afterwards. I love the s pen integration. IM still learning how to use it to full capacity. amazed how well & precise it is. plus I have sketchbook mobile. stock browser is very fast. I sideloaded flash so everything is good. IM also impressed w/ the Ir remote control app. works very well. tested it out on my dads plasma. he was stoked at how I could do that. plus it shows TV programming on it on what's on or coming on. Then you press one and it'll switch channels to selected show. overall s/w is good. can't wait to see how this is once jb arrives. this tablet really will fly then.
IM still putting tablet through the paces. slot to learn w/ t/w & s pen.
P.s. Samsung released official Note 10.1 guide/manual app in the playstore. I recommend getting it. very detailed and will help to make most of the S pen.
I will likely keep it. still have 30 days to test out. my only question is do I want to keep 16gb one or return it for 32 gb one once best buy gets them in. I like the white colored one. unless they make a blue, ill stick with white.

I actually got the manual from playstore. just type Samsung galaxy note 10.1 guide in search box. its a free app/guide.
You can find it here now:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kr.co.samsung.galaxy.note10_1
Thanks. I found it online at Sammy, couldn't find it at the Play Store. Probably just being dense.
Had to stop mid-post - my GNote just arrived. Plugged in and charging as I type.
Hey guys...
So I want to love the note and think the spen with a tablet is just awesome. So I went to best buy today to play around. Have any of you played with the note in best buy? I ask because wow it was laggy. Noticeable shutters While swiping home screens; delays after trying to close out multi screen display, etc. Yet everyone on here says its super fast... I even disabled home screen widgets. On the flip side I'm considering a used iPad retina. I'm kinda tired of android. Currently have a nexus 7 which is fantastic but I need more functionality. The iPad just seems so polished from the gorgeous retina display to the more polished apps. I know multitude of people sold their iPad after using the note so I'd love to hear those opinions. Thanks for the help guys... Fwiw I'm an android guy at heart but the fragmentation of android makes me really appreciate apple lately... Their stuff is just smooth.

Don't base off your decision on BB's display model. I tried the same and it was super leggy.. I found gazillion things running and weird stuff people had tried on it or it could be anything but it was just unusable on the other hand iPad was normal (is it deliberate ?!?!) Anyhow, try buying one and play with it for about 2 weeks and then make a decision (you can always return it if you don't enjoy it - within X days policy)

Don't you think there would be a 100 page thread on the front page of the forum if that was true? There's a couple of user-made videos showing transitions, multiview in action, and multiple apps running that are floating around. Check those out. Below is a comparison review to the TF700 made by Lisa at MobileTechReview who's considered pretty thorough and unbiased. Personally I have over 100 apps loaded and have 30 widgets on my home pages and I don't have any lag. I will say when using S-Note in multiview there's a bit of lag when moving from the other open app to it but it's only noticeable because everything else is so fast comparatively. JB should fly on Exynos Quad with 2GB of RAM. Until the Nexus 10 comes out the Note is the fastest Android tablet on the market bar none.
On the flip side I'm considering a used iPad retina. I'm kinda tired of android.

Apples and oranges (no pun intended). If you're only interested in consumption, browsing, and gaming the Note's features probably aren't a big deal for you. An iPad or Nexus 10 would serve you better because of their displays. If all I cared about was consumption I'd probably get the Nexus 10. I'm not a big fan of walled gardens so nothing Apple makes is on my shopping list.
Op answered his own question really. New Ipad is the opposite of more functionality..lmfao you will get way less as IOS isn't as versatile as android. Apple is cool and alot of good apps bit Android is superior by far,IMO. My first tablet was an ipad1. Used it over 2 yrs. Back then Ipad was only real good device out. Android tabs were lacking. Now, Android tablets are tons more capable of various tasks than a mere Ipad. I gave my Ipad to my 2yr. Old daughter. I now have 2 Nexus 7's, Note 10.1, and ipad1. I use to have a transformer prime also. Once i went android, tablet wise, there was no looking back.

Well I love iPads, have had every one usually on release day, same with iPhones, but I can also appreciate Android tablets, and while most Android tablets I've used to date have been disappointing (most recently the Asus Infinity), I have to say the Note 10.1 is a remarkable product. I haven't used the S pen much yet, but it does seem very capable. I'm running straight stock and don't notice much, if any, lag. The browsers could be a little faster at page rendering, but all in all from an overall perspective it's plenty fast.
I have to agree with you about iOS apps being more polished, they truly are, but android apps keep getting better and better. The nice thing I like about android is that it's a lot more flexible and I'm a geek at heart, so all the widgets and stuff are really cool. The Note takes that to a whole new level with the pop up apps, side by side windows and s pen functionality.
I also love the display, I think it's awesome, the front facing speakers are also a very unique feature. It's hard to compete with the audio quality out of an iPhone / iPad, but this Note's speakers are stellar.
My Note is a little on the creaky side, but I'll leave that for nit-pickers So far I love mine and the pro's far outweigh the con's.

Really appreciate the thoughtful replies and not flaming me - started the thread while in the theater waiting for Argo to start (excellent movie by the way), realized I rambled a little bit.
Anyways, Demandarin - I never thought about that but it's really true, the ipad is a media consumption device for the most part while the note's hardware (and software) enable functional tasks to be performed.... So if I want functionality beyond really smart/polished apps (which iOs does have), note is the correct choice.
I had the first ipad, sold it cuase I didn't use it much. Had an OG transformer with dock, sold that cause I didn't use it much. I don't use my nexus 7 much but because it was so cheap I don't feel as bad. The problem is that my laptop is slim and portable so its always on the couch with me and I end up not using a tablet. The note though is advanced enough to where I think I would use it alot - in fact I want to get rid of my laptop (and have a mac mini as the "computer" in the house).
It was interesting as I was in best buy this older guy who had no idea about tablets was looking at the note vs the ipad. I'm thinking man there is no way that guy should get the note, there's just too much going on for the average user compared to the simplicity of the ipad . It's also interesting how the ipad runs in full demo mode practically, everything is locked down and apps are demo's - because of this its smooth and perfect. I figured the note was overloaded with crap as you guys said... its really a shame because if I was a general consumer like that guy, I would've been like man this note is a piece of CRAP (due to lag and the downright CLUSTER of widgets on the homescreens).
I'm gonna go ahead and try the note - the s-pen and split screen is so useful to me (I can see me doing both all the time).

I dunno. For you to decide.
It's just that you have tried tablets three times, and three times you end up not using them.
Aa for the original question: I can confirm there is no lag on a non-abused note. I used apex launcher for two days but switched back to stock touchwiz cause for me apex was laggy

I don't know why some people are having touch response issues when their devices are plugged in. Mine doesn't act any differently one way or the other and it probably spends have the time I use it plugged in via the universal dock. A couple of people on the One X forum where having the same issue but they are way in the minority. It doesn't seem like something with the device itself; if it were I'd imagine we'd be seeing a lot more comments from owners.
I never realized it until it was mentioned here. I thought it was bc i have a screen protector.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
As long as I have unit plugged into a surge protector...no problems. Without surge, it acts differently. Not sure if this would make a difference but maybe try this and see if it helps those who are having issues.
It's really risky to try stuff at stores. Chances are that the device has been used by hundreds of people without a reboot, so RAM may be completely depleted and so much in the cache partition that would confuse the device. Apps in the background can for sure make it laggy. My advice is go back and ask them clear the RAM and reboot if possible. If the iPad ran perfectly, maybe it was because nobody was playing with it and and the most popular device was just exhausted
I've used iPads before and up to a month or so ago I had my iPad2. It's a very entertaining OS, but you get tired of it very quickly; I only had it for 5 months. I bought with the excuse that the apps on iOS have more development that its counterpart in Android. And to a point it is true, but the hype gets dull very quickly.
I will confess that I'm a sort of compulsive buyer and buy things without really needing them. Just this year I've had and sold about 3 tablets beside the 3 I currently possess. If you buy the Note 10.1, I don't think you will regret it. For the first time this year I see myself keeping this one for a long time. You will not miss the iOS exclusive like Infinity Blade and tweetbot, and better facebook and twitter apps. I will not lie to you, the iOS is butter smooth, Android doesn't feel like that yet; but that should not be enough reason for not getting all the other perks...
I'm gonna try to scoop one up on craigslist... however I'm VERY intrigued to see what the nexus 10 pricing will be.
My SGN10.1 was initially full of lag as well.
What I found works is this. If you snap off the back plate you will see what looks like a screw cap. Carefully unscrew that and pour the lag into an empty jar. There is a lot of lag in there so the jar may be about half full before you are done. Once you have poured out all the lag screw the lid back on the jar and dispose of it in a hazmat safe landfill. Lag is carcinogenic so please avoid touching it.
Many people do not realize this but SGN10.1 units which have been manufactured in colder climates actually add the lag as an antifreeze. It is supposed to evaporate once the tablet is exposed to a warmer climate but occasionally it does not and the owner must pour it out manually.
Hope that helps. Once the lag has been removed your SGN10.1 should perform much better.

Mine is a little too fast. Is it safe to pour some of the lag in?
Well, ive been using my nexus 9 now for a few days and i just feel a little bit let down knowing how much ive spent and the results ive got. This feeling is purely regarding the hardware as i love lollipop and all the benefits that brings.
I thought i was happy with my nexus 9, well i was until i picked up my nexus 7 2013 and wow.. So light and it felt really nice! No sharp corners and the screen is loads better than the 9. This got me thinking, ive paid double for the 9.
What i would of loved is the 7 just resizing to the 9, using the same style and design (with wireless charging) im not over bothered about the new cpu if im honest, the one in the 7 is fast enough. Plus lollipop feels really slick anyway when i tried the preview version. They would of sold bucket loads, ok a few people would of wanted more but its better that than have loads of dissapointed customers.
Ive owned the Nexus 4 / 5 and both 7's and i even sold my 5 hoping to buy a 6.. Well until they released the price, so im back using the 4 again and very happy with it.
Also to top it all off and rub salt in the wounds HTC in the USA did a 50% off sale on the N9...ok it was only for a day but surely they wouldnt do that if they were losing money on each device would they?
Needless to say my N9 will be going back as faulty for a full refund due to its screen flicker. I love the 4:3 screen ratio so im looking for a alternative.. Any ideas?
Steve
Screen is "loads better" on the N7? I don't understand at all. I've had both side by side and can't see how you can come to that conclusion.
I believe the only alternative with a 4:3 aspect ratio would be an iPad.

Can you do a Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 side by side video review?
I'm curious how they compare performance wise, i.e. page loads, refresh rates, stuttering, what movies look like on the N9 in the horizontal orientation etc.

I'll see if I have time this weekend.
Don't have a tripod, would be tough to hold the camera and perform actions at the same time on both tablet, but I'll see what I can do.

Think its more your wallet that has hurt your view of it. (in my opinion) and I get that. That and lollipop is great its supposed to be faster and not just on new devices this was the goal starting from KK. So shelling out that much money when you have the N7 may hurt a bit. I like the portability of the N7 Spent most my time with the n10 though. I just prefer bigger for some tasks.
The 50% sale only lasted an hour or less and was more hype than anything. Still there is a large markup on these much like there is on every premium device.
The screen flicker i don't have but if I were you I would definitely do an exchange or just send it back.
Personally I have been enjoying it but haven't spent enough time with it yet ( one day)
I'm enjoying mine a lot. I've had both Nexus 7's and I liked the 2nd gen a lot. But it didn't feel like a tablet to much because it wasn't really much bigger than my phones (Nexus 5 and OnePlus) this is a good upgrade. I'm waiting for more performance tweaks in future updates or new Roms. It hiccups from time to time but not much to worry about.

death before apple!
Just imagine taking the iPad air 2 and putting lollipop on it, best tablet ftw
The N9 screen is a LOT better than the N7's (lightbleed aside). I would go as far as to say that it has the best overall screen of any Nexus device that came before it in terms of color accuracy, fidelity, and viewing angles.
I share the thoughts of the op. I have both the n7 FHD and n9 and ive only been using the n7 since every time I grab the n9 the light bleed, loose back and over heating bothers me so much. I'm returning it for sure. Maybe I'll give it another shot once they work out all these issues.
And also, just noticed today when turning the n9 on, that it has yellowish spots when the screen is black but backlight is on (as in when turning on).

Will they sort the QC issue out thou? Its put me off to be honest.... I'll probably wait for the next premium tablet...

Zero issues here with mine. Every product has their issues. There is always an "issues" and "disappointment" bandwagon for the first few weeks.

Exactly.
Some people think buying The Shield will make them happy. Sure, it's a great tablet, I had one before my N9 I know but check out their board on xda. It's just as littered with complains of this fault and that fault.
I've never heard of a device with ZERO complaints about something.
I am loving my N9. I have the Asus TF701T also and now that ive been using the N9 for a week the only time i pick up the Asus is when i want to play a game that is not compatible yet on my N9. I have none of the issues that others are complaining about. Feels great, looks great and works great.
That's all folks.
I am finding a LOT more reviews where they are saying the N9 was a missed chance... there is no excuse for the squidgy back and light bleed on a premium tablet...
I'm thinking Nokia N1 now... it has the laminated screen and the aluminum body the N9 should of had.
So, what tablets have similar specs to the N9, but without the issues, regardless of cost? I'm currently waiting for LTE version (though maybe I'll grab a sand one when it comes out if I decide I can live without LTE), but I'm definitely open to a better alternative. I know there aren't any that have 64 bit processors or Android 5.0 (yet). But beside those, is there any other Android tablet that's around 8-9 inches and has similar performance. I mostly will use it for web browsing, games, and testing apps that I've developed. Thanks!

That's the problem. It's a premium price sticker for a not-premium device.
I got my Nexus 6 yesterday and I just wanted to say I love this thing. It's so snappy and feels amazing in the hand. The screen is ultra crisp. The sound is also very good and the stereo sound sweet. The battery isn't the best I've had (though I've only had it one day) but it's not bad by any means. I'm glad I got it.
I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus so for me the initial battery impression was.... "Wait, i've been using the phone for 10 minutes how do i still have 98% battery and not 85%?"
I'm sure it will continue to amaze me. I had no problem activating on Verizon either. Unfortunately no speed tests yet as i'm 48 stories above manhattan and service up here is terrible on the best days. I'm hoping i can get XLTE speeds but I'm not crossing my fingers on VoLTE though.
Yeah, I just got mine earlier today. The tap setup from my N5 worked beautifully, although not EVERYTHING came over. I still had to setup my widgets, and a few apps, but it was no big deal. I think the only app I lost was Redbox, which is weird because it worked just fine on my N5 with lollipop, but it doesn't even show up in the Play Store on my N6.
Otherwise, I love everything about this phone. I haven't had it long enough to really say what works and what doesn't, but first impressions are fantastic. I'm really digging that the screen is now 5 icons wide. Enabled me to reorganize things a bit and drop down to 2 home screens (from 3). Nice surprise there.
At the moment, my only gripe is that it's a fingerprint magnet. I thought my N5 was bad, but the N6 (both front and back) makes the N5 look downright fingerprint-proof. I'm going to be wiping this thing down... a lot... I can already tell.
Does the phone feel premium? Does it feel solid in your hand? I feel the N4 was nice and solid vs the N5 being light. How is the weight in your hand?

Yeah it seems some apps haven't clicked whatever needs to be clicked to show up for Nexus 6. I was looking forward to trying out TiVo streaming on my 6 before rooting (since it doesn't work on my rooted 5), but there is no version that shows up for this device.

It feels premium to me. Very solid with appropriate weight for a device this size. It feels great in the hand, after initially being a bit shocked by its size after my second day with it, its pretty boss!!
Anyone notice that the power control widget is missing/gone? I use it all the the time like auto brightness and sync.
Haha the red box app wasn't available on my note 4 either ( I'm here because I'm still in my 14 day window) so i uses an apk. I played with it at the store today and was impressed.

I keep reading how people are saying its heavy. I actually love that about phones. Not saying I want to carry a brick around, but I want to know its there. I loved that about the OPO. Not neccesarily heavy but it had a weight to it that said, "HEY, I'm right here!!"

In my opinion it feels very premium. The curved back makes it very comfortable despite being so big. It feels very solid as well.
It really feels good in hand. It's big but not too big for a phablet. I can get my hands around it for use. As for any negatives. Coming from a LG G2, not having tap to wake is really killing me considering it has this feature and Google turned it off. I hope they can turn it on for a future update. Other than that it's fantastic!

in the past, custom kernels have added double tap to wake so i'm sure it'll be available.
Would be nice to have it natively but yeah.

I've seen similar reviews saying the phone was hevay. I wouldn't say it's heavy but that the weight is very centered. it feels really nice in the hand. The M dimple also helps with one handed use as I find myself using it to hold the phone in portrait.
