Backlight bug and/or light sensor problem - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a Nexus 7 in the Play store.
At first run there is a problem: androidcentral.com/nexus-7-display-goes-dark-boot-check-auto-brightness
To solve it, I lightened on sensor, screen went on and I turned autobrightness off.
However, this method doesn't work in recovery and I can't see anything.Flashed CMW, CMW Touch, TWRP - still no backlight. The display is working, because in bright sunlight you can see the interface.

UP!
I'm really need help.

Got my new N7 Monday and I had the same problem. Called Google, they said it's either a software issue (where a factory reset could help) or a hardware issue (the likely problem). As expected the reset did nothing. I have a replacement on the way, but I'm a little worried since the device was otherwise flawless.

No screen Backlight

OK i'm playing with a G1 and the screen backlight seems to have went out on it. Initially i thought it was a bad flash because i was able to boot but it had some problems. oh yeah to see the screen i use a mag light aimed at it to navigate etc.... anyway i finally was able to get it to reset so i reset it. still no backlight. finally i unrooted/reset to factory default via these instructions at google and still no backlight. any suggestions as to what to test next it almost seems like it is either a flexcable which i do not think it is because if it were i don't believe any of the screen would work. or a bad lcd that needs replaced.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
I had this happen for a few days intermittantly, i just joceled the phone a bit and it got working
tried messing with it and such, no luck really. any other ideas?
thanks
You could get a really bright flashlight I bet that would work.

Need Advice N7 Screen issue.

Hello-
I usually do not open threads but I need advice on this recent touch responsiveness issue that has been happening. My Nexus 7 8 GIG was running great I had not had one issue with it, until one day I opened the case "Poetic leather case with magnet locks" and the screen came on notifications were on and animated everything looked fine. I went to unlock it and the touch screen did not respond to anything, now the screen rotates fine and all but it would not respond to touch. So I reset it with the power button, the touch screen then works until it times out and turns off, I wake it up and the screen does not respond again. I took it out of the case and have manually turned it on/off and it still does not respond to touch, but it will work every time I reset it. This problem has came out of nowhere it was running great.
I was originally on AOKP Milestone 1 with Franko's Kernel r25 so I thought maybe that was it so I re flashed Milestone 1 and kept the stock kernel and the problem persists. So I wiped everything and put BAMF Paradigm on it and it still does this, but the touch screen responds every time it is manually reset so I am trying to figure out if this is hardware or software related I am led to believe it is software considering the touch screen works flawlessly upon reboot but again I am not sure.
I have not added any new apps or anything like that to cause a memory leak or such. This problem started when I left the N7 for two days without touching it, then the problem happened after I tried to use it after the two days of inactivity.
Update: I turned the N7 off for about a day booted it back up now the touch screen is working every time I am confused.
So I still have 7 months on my ASUS manufactures warranty should I send this unit back? I just do not want to think its software related and it will get fixed through updates and then find out it is hardware related and be out of the warranty period.
I am on 4.1.2 with the last boot loader "not the new one"
latest version of TWRP
Thanks everyone in advance for your time.
It seems like a magnet bad effect to me! not sure though cuz the nexus 7 suppose to work fine with magnetic cases but it could be a Magnetic field effect. In my opinion as long as it works don't send it cuz you don't know what happens there in the service center, I mean once the device is opened it would never get the same as before.

[Q] Broken display

Hello all,
(First of all, if you watch the video you will understand what I'm trying to explain here, but I wasn't able to make myself very clear, secondly I don't have support from asus/google in my country)
I've been using my nexus 7 for almost 4 months and haven't had any problems with it until now. When I upgraded to 4.2 I noticed that the speakers sound was strange sometimes, but most of the time it worked just fine. But today something very sad happened
When I unlocked the tablet I realized it was in my sister's user (I was already at launcher's "home"), so I locked it in order to switch to my user, but when I pressed the unlock button, the screen wasn't normal, it went crazy. I couldn't see anything, just shades of black and white (see video above for details). After that I tried anything but the the screen was the same. Something important to mention is that the screen responds normal to touch input, so I can unlock, open menu, recent apps, etc only by knowing where to touch. I'm even able to turn it off by holding power button and then choosing "yes, reboot tablet" without being able to see anything on the screen.
It worth mention that after several reboots, screen locks/unlocks I manege to get the screen to work perfectly for a couple of minutes, but when I locked the tabled the screen stopped working again.
My question is: DO you guys think that this is a screen problem, some wires that aren't well connected or even maybe Android OS problem? And would it worth it to buy a new screen and try to find someone to change it for me or I should just throw it in the trash?
PS: The tablet is completely stock now, just rooted and with busybox, no OC, no GPU OC, etc...

Try flashing a factory image. If that doesn't work, it's most likely a hardware issue. You should be able to get warranty service if that's the case.

Edit: Missed the part about no support from Google/Asus. Disregard the warranty statement.

Problem kind of solved

Thanks for the answer. I decided to do that (even though I didn't think it would solve the issue).
I turned off the tablet and booted into recovery by holding vol up and down + power and guess what??? when it booted into recovery the screen was perfect again, I could see all information about the tablet, lock state, etc. I decide to reboot it and it has been working normally for a couple of hours from now, I have even made some benchmarks and everything was ok.
Now I'm more confused than before: Hardware or OS problem? The tablet is working now, so I'll just backup all my titanium backup data to my pc and leave USB debugging on, so if the problem returns I'll just flash stock again.
EDIT: After some hours the screen problem returned. I flashed 4.2.1 and the problem was still there. I guess I'll just have to find someone who will open my tablet and see if the wires are properly connected.

but also u need to install app on device :|
VNC if i remember correctly
But u connect device to pc and with flash tool, flash another firmware so no need to see screen of device
unlocked bootloader and then flashed stock 4.2.2 nakasi-jdq39-factory-c317339e.tar with google nexus 7 v5 toolkit, still no backlight.. it must be a hardware problem.. anyone how if it's expensive to replace the backlights? or whatever is called the lights that light up the screen..
From what I know, the backlight is bundled with the screen as one unit. Most likely need a new screen assembly.

yes, i asked some services, they said the same thing, too bad, because the screen is expensive... anyway, thanks for all the answers..
i have the same issue on 4.2.2
OP, with your nexus 7 do you have the issue when auto brightness is switched off and the brightness level maxed
mine seems to be related to auto brightness and brightness control whereby moving the slider below 50% switches backlight off completely.
here a video i made

i the meantime i'm gonna try and see if 4.3 resolves or try asus for RMA

Phone works but backlight of the screen doesn't

Hello,
As you can see my issue is related to the screen... backlight always worked until some days ago where it failed somehow.
It started to fail when I flashed Stock Kitkat with the recovery but I don't think that it could be related...
My question is simple, did anyone faced this issue and resolved it?
My guess is that it has to be repaired but if there is a small chance it can be repaired from my side without opening it I'm willing to try it, otherwise it goes to reparation
[EDIT]
Apart from this issue the phone is working just fine, I mean it boots correctly, can enter in download/factory reset mode if I want too.
The only thing is if I adjust the brightness on the phone from Android nothing change, the phone is still dark and can hardly see what's in the screen.
[/EDIT]
Thanks in advance!
