Hello all:
I recently rooted my nexus 7 so that I could OTG a thumb drive for movie/big file viewing, but battery power is quickly consumed.
Is there a way to access a thumb drive and charge the tablet at the same time?
I was looking at this thread for inspiration,http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625291 but I got a couple of problems with it.
Any ideas/ help is something,
TIA

No idea here, but what someone needs to do is make a case with usb passthrough and adds storage to the device...GENIUS!

Ok I dug around looking for a way to enable usb charging on the tab 2 the "force usb charging" option is not in the stock file structure, was a custom kernel used in the first version of the tab to acheive this .... was going to post the url but because im new i cant, on a side rant i find this feature very annoying, how can you as a person ask good questions and give valid examples without being able to link and show my point, anyway aside from that is their a way to modify the kernel ICS 4.0.3 in the tab 2 to enable the charging via usb
Additionally i user a terminial emulator and actually looked before i asked about this no joy, looks like Samsung once again got wise to this and took away the option

As far as I know, no stock device enables you to charge at the full AC rate via a computer USB port. The "charge only" options are usually just to prevent the device from mounting in any way on the computer (disk, modem, media device, etc.). Also, I'm assuming that you want a "fast charge" mod. As for USB charging, even on the stock firmware (and CM9), the tablet doesn't show that it is charging when plugged in to my computer, but it does charge, albeit very, very slowly.
As for not being able to post links, that is to prevent link spam. Ever see forum bots that just join, make spam posts and link to phishing, scam, and other not so great sites? There is no way to guarantee that you're a genuine user, so there are no links allowed until you reach a certain post quantity to verify you're a legit user. Odds are, spam accounts will be caught before they reach this preset limit to post links.
I have the P5113 usa model and stock firm, and i think that when it plug to PC the tablet don't charge, but it use the power of usb instead discharge the battery because the % of the battery don't change when i use it.
i've got a 10.1 P5113 and the only way I've been able to charge via USB is being on CM9. the tab says it is charging when i plug it in to my computer.

Ok thx for the quick replies, i assumed a custom ROM was needed ...
Hello, I'm new to the Nexus 7 and I recently bought an OTG cable for connecting an external hard drive, particularly because I'm travelling in a few more days.
I've tried every HDD I have and none work, there is always a clicking sound for most of them and only my USB flash drive has worked thus far. The guy at the store said to change my HDDs to FAT 32, which didn't work but then I tried it on a 1 TB external HDD that I bought at the store, and after finding out that the HDD was too big for conversion to FAT 32 after like 7 hours, I tested it anyway and the HDD seems like it wants to work. The Nexus Media Importer pops up instantly like on the USB flash drive, however it takes an unusually long period of time to connect (waited for roughly 5 minutes before giving up) , and I have yet to be able to access the external hard drive. It seems like it is compatible with the Nexus 7 as there is no spinning and clicking sound so there seems to be enough power going through it, but for some odd reason I just can't access the files on the HDD.
Is it because I formatted it? Wiping out everything on the HDD?
Is there a power issue? Even though it seems like it doesn't?
Can someone please help? I might have possibly lost $140
No replies? *bump*
I use this app on my N7 and have varying luck with HDDs and it appears that the issue is sufficient power, which varies by device. I can access both FAT and NFS drives in cases where the drive ahs external power available so formatting is most likely not your issue.

Yeah I think it's a power issue, even though it seems like it isn't. Funnily enough my dad's 1 TB external HDD seems to work so I'm swapping with his.
yeah some HDD's need external power. or simply cannot pull enough power from the nexy, ive heard some people have success with a powered usb hub

Hello, I'm a newbie and currently struggling with my new device.
I'm not too clued up, but here goes..
I've been playing Vice City on the N10, with a Sixaxis pad connected via OTG USB.
The problem is the huge battery drain when doing so. It appears the controller is taking charge from the tablet whilst connected.
Is there anyway of stopping the controller from charging when connected to N10? There are no lights on the controller when connected, but I'm pretty sure it is charging.
Can it be connected via Bluetooth if the N10 is not rooted?
Any hhelp would be appreciated.
Thanks.

To be able to connect it via bluetooth, you should download the sixaxis app from the market (buy it or download from where you want...) and then follow the steps on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-he-0nMB14
Remember that you must be rooted (you can root without loosing any data via superboot, put superboot nexus 10 on the search and do it).
Thanks for that.
I was hoping for a way of using it via usb, but without the controller taking charge from the N10. I guess this isnt an option?
I'm a bit apprehensive of rooting the device too.

I don't think there's a way to do what you say, the only way it'd be if the controller didn't have a battery, so it is plug and play and it doesn't get charged.
You don't have to worry about root, with the method I told you, all you have to do is install a driver and then double click on a file.
Ok, thanks a lot for the help.
I don't think I will root my N10, so I guess gaming on it will have to stop.
Grrrrr

Do you really fear rooting that much? It's just a simple driver on your pc and a simple click on a file. You won't have problems.
Rooting is not as difficult as it sounds and is not dangerous either, its really quick and simple to do and if you have any issues then unroot it!
Locking and relocking the bootloader is quick and simple to and if you ever have any issues just do unroot and relock!
It's really simple and a guy on here has made simple free or donate app that makes it even easier, search for Nexus 10 toolkit.
I am rooted on stock, it really nothing to worry about!

I guess he feels when we did it for the first time on our device. It's understandable.
Yeah, still not sure about rooting, and if I'm honest I know very little about it (I.e what it actually does etc)
I'll have a read up on it, and also consider a wired controller without a battery (although the tablet will still use battery powering that).
Cheers for the help.

You might want to take a look at this: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...top-5-benefits-of-rooting-your-android-phone/
Thought I'd resurrect this thread...
I'm using the OTG port on the Dell Venue 8 Pro with a PS3 controller. As the OP indicated, the controller is constantly drawing charge from the tablet to replenish it's power. Unfortunately, this cause the DV8P to go into deep discharge (as I forgot to unhook the controller) and now it won't boot up.
The reason I don't use BT is that the Siraxis drivers don't play nice with Windows 8 and won't connect via BT. I don't want the PS3 controller to continually draw power from the DV8P for two reasons:
1. Shortens the tablet's battery life so therefore I can only play games for a certain amount of time before the tablet's battery needs to recharge
2. Increased possibility of accidental deep discharge on the DV8P causing it to brick
Any thoughts on this?

I am in desperate need of some help!!
I have an unrooted Nexus 7. I received my OTG cable today and I plugged in a USB stick and tried using a Nexus Media Importer with a Kingston USB drive. It came up with a "Connecting" box so I walked off to grab a drink. I got sidetracked and ended upo coming back an hour later. Now.. It won't turn on!!
I pressed the lock button and nothing, tried to turn it back on and nothing. I've plugged it into the computer and nothing!
HOW can this have bricked my Nexus 7!?
Can anyone suggest what to try next? I have no idea how this has happened.
Have you tried charging it (wall charger)?

Hold down power for 20 seconds?

Yes, It had over 90% battery too! I just left it alone whilst Nexus Media Importer was trying to open the USB Drive and an hour later it's completely dead.. There was one video file on the USB stick that had been freshly formatted, nothing was opened manually since leaving the tablet.
It won't boot into recovery mode and I don't really want to get it repaired without first wiping the memory as I have lots of relatively private work documents and family photos on it!
Can anyone suggest how I could wipe the memory and/or fix this?

I got the google logo for about a second then nothing, and now it won't display the google logo. Does holding the power button down for 20 seconds do something different then?
i would let the power run down then give it a full charge. then hold power button with one of the volume buttons. if not then try downloading a tool kit for the nexus 7 on your pc and connect it.

It's a soft reset I think...
Keep trying. She'll come back. Hold that power button.

That's the plan. It had a full charge though, why would the battery be entirely drained?
Before I left waiting for it to connect I tried a few USB devices with the OTG cable and Nexus Media Importer and I got this window:
"Connecting
USB Device
dev/bus/usb/001/002"
I couldn't get it to work so I thought I'd give it a while but obviously it didn't do much good!
Do you think the cable is faulty? I can't see why it couldn't read the Memory stick?
Nexus Media Importer is still buggy and may not work for everyone. Stickmount didn´t work for me either, I had to use this nice app to get a stable connection through OTG to a random USB Stick: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=de

I'm hoping not too root this device if I can help it! But I've read nothing but good things on Nexus Media Importer I just assumed it would work the OTG cable I bought. Is it common for the app to not "Connect" with a USB stick?
I have no idea what caused my N7 to die but fingers crossed it'll boot back up in a few hours!
Rooting is not a bad thing at all. You can use eg. apps like Titanium Backup, Adaway ( to disable Ads in Apps ) or clean your System by removing some Apps you may not need at all
Nexus Media Importer still needs some updates since it has some bugs when used with Android 4.3

I know the the benefits of rooting butat the moment I don't have enough confidence that the tablet won't die on me and render my warranty useless! Haha
As I'm running everything stock I can't see why some N7's are working fine with nexus media importer and mine falls to connect to any external storage?
Is there anything I can use/try without rooting to use external storage?
Install OTG Troubleshooter. It'll at least let you know if your OTG cable and device is detected.

UPDATE: my nexus is now working again, I charged it for 5 hours then held the power button in for about 30 seconds.. I got the Google screen for.a while but eventually it booted up as normal.
I used the OTG troubleshooter within nexus media importer and it locked up the OTG cannot and mass storage device fine...
However regardless of what usb stick I try and use it still hands inn the "connecting" box I mentioned previously..
Any idea how to get my nexus To connect to a usb flash drive?
try the otg troubleshooter only without the nexus media importer. Sorry couldn't be of more help to you.

For otg to work in 4.3, you have to boot your nexus 7 with English US language activated.
Once your nexus 7 is booted, you can revert back to your preferred language.
This bug is explained in nexus media importer app.

When you say booted, do you mean a factory reset? then using English (US) as the startup language?
Or simply change it to English (US) now then reset the N7? It's already in English US for some reason anyways.. but I think I set it up to be English UK originally out of the box?
Simply change the language in settings to English (US), switch off, switch on. You can change your language back at this point if you wish and OTG should work.
Hope that helps.

Hello all,I've got my 6P for about a year and a half, from the get go, my battery wasn't anything to write home about. But lately my battery life became a real pain in the as*...
I have to charge it twice a day, and that's after sending it twice for a battery replacement.
and to top it all, I've just purchased an OTG disk on key, and the 6P only wants to play nice, if the file system is FAT32 (which is a real kicker as the files I want to use the damn thing for, are bigger than 4GB).
I know there's a way to access NTFS files on an OTG drive, but it requires a ROOT which I'm not really keen on doing, as I have another 6 months or so under warranty...
so right now I have a packed 6P with lousy battery life, and no option to use the thumb drive that I've purchased...
any ideas as to what to do (before I smash it to bits on the nearest wall)?
P.S. lately it started to stater and sometimes being unresponsive.
