I am in desperate need of some help!!
I have an unrooted Nexus 7. I received my OTG cable today and I plugged in a USB stick and tried using a Nexus Media Importer with a Kingston USB drive. It came up with a "Connecting" box so I walked off to grab a drink. I got sidetracked and ended upo coming back an hour later. Now.. It won't turn on!!
I pressed the lock button and nothing, tried to turn it back on and nothing. I've plugged it into the computer and nothing!
HOW can this have bricked my Nexus 7!?
Can anyone suggest what to try next? I have no idea how this has happened.
Have you tried charging it (wall charger)?

Yes, It had over 90% battery too! I just left it alone whilst Nexus Media Importer was trying to open the USB Drive and an hour later it's completely dead.. There was one video file on the USB stick that had been freshly formatted, nothing was opened manually since leaving the tablet.
It won't boot into recovery mode and I don't really want to get it repaired without first wiping the memory as I have lots of relatively private work documents and family photos on it!
Can anyone suggest how I could wipe the memory and/or fix this?

I got the google logo for about a second then nothing, and now it won't display the google logo. Does holding the power button down for 20 seconds do something different then?
i would let the power run down then give it a full charge. then hold power button with one of the volume buttons. if not then try downloading a tool kit for the nexus 7 on your pc and connect it.

It's a soft reset I think...
Keep trying. She'll come back. Hold that power button.

That's the plan. It had a full charge though, why would the battery be entirely drained?
Before I left waiting for it to connect I tried a few USB devices with the OTG cable and Nexus Media Importer and I got this window:
"Connecting
USB Device
dev/bus/usb/001/002"
I couldn't get it to work so I thought I'd give it a while but obviously it didn't do much good!
Do you think the cable is faulty? I can't see why it couldn't read the Memory stick?
Nexus Media Importer is still buggy and may not work for everyone. Stickmount didn´t work for me either, I had to use this nice app to get a stable connection through OTG to a random USB Stick: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=de

I'm hoping not too root this device if I can help it! But I've read nothing but good things on Nexus Media Importer I just assumed it would work the OTG cable I bought. Is it common for the app to not "Connect" with a USB stick?
I have no idea what caused my N7 to die but fingers crossed it'll boot back up in a few hours!
Rooting is not a bad thing at all. You can use eg. apps like Titanium Backup, Adaway ( to disable Ads in Apps ) or clean your System by removing some Apps you may not need at all
Nexus Media Importer still needs some updates since it has some bugs when used with Android 4.3

I know the the benefits of rooting butat the moment I don't have enough confidence that the tablet won't die on me and render my warranty useless! Haha
As I'm running everything stock I can't see why some N7's are working fine with nexus media importer and mine falls to connect to any external storage?
Is there anything I can use/try without rooting to use external storage?
Install OTG Troubleshooter. It'll at least let you know if your OTG cable and device is detected.

UPDATE: my nexus is now working again, I charged it for 5 hours then held the power button in for about 30 seconds.. I got the Google screen for.a while but eventually it booted up as normal.
I used the OTG troubleshooter within nexus media importer and it locked up the OTG cannot and mass storage device fine...
However regardless of what usb stick I try and use it still hands inn the "connecting" box I mentioned previously..
Any idea how to get my nexus To connect to a usb flash drive?
try the otg troubleshooter only without the nexus media importer. Sorry couldn't be of more help to you.

For otg to work in 4.3, you have to boot your nexus 7 with English US language activated.
Once your nexus 7 is booted, you can revert back to your preferred language.
This bug is explained in nexus media importer app.

When you say booted, do you mean a factory reset? then using English (US) as the startup language?
Or simply change it to English (US) now then reset the N7? It's already in English US for some reason anyways.. but I think I set it up to be English UK originally out of the box?
Simply change the language in settings to English (US), switch off, switch on. You can change your language back at this point if you wish and OTG should work.
Hope that helps.

After months of no problems yesterday I plugged my phone in for its nightly charge and noticed that it did not trigger the usual USB mount prompt.
I assumed it was Windows, but I have a bunch of machines and operating systems so I checked and they all has the same result. I switched out cords and did a complete power reset (taking battery out) no change.. The Phone charges through the USB but the computers say "unrecognized usb device" and cannot mount the phone as a drive and the phone does not offer the option as it used to???
I don't recall getting any sort of update that might have related to this?
This is the original T-mobile version

How do you do that without USB connectivity?
It is very frustrating, maybe a hardware fail? I see just enough post relating to the issue that makes me know it is real but not sure how to resolve,, Do we have to go to Best Buy? or is there a direct Samsung route?
This too happens to me. Whenever I plug it into my laptop on the top USB slot, it doesn't recognize it. If I plug it in on the bottom USB slot, it does. Not sure why. This, however, is only the case if I'm using a different USB cable than the one that came with the phone itself. Once again, not sure why.
Perhaps you are using an alternative USB? Or plugging in on the top? Not sure how I can help you more than that, sorry. Hope you find a fix!

Using official OEM cable that came with the phone. And, again, USB worked fine until I manually installed 2.3.4.
Well It is off to Samsung for repair
After time on phone with them and a factory reset belief is that the usb connector is defective. BTW Best Buy just hands off to Samsung 1-800 #
So Back to a barely functional G-1 for a while, glad I could find it!

Recently started happening to me, needed to transfer some files off, had to resort to dropbox etc.. rebooted phone+computer ,still not working.
Came good a few days later using same equipment, same cable,
Mysteriously fixed itself ?
Last week when I plugged my USB cable into my phone, it acted normal. The screen where it asks me if I want to connect USB came up, and I said yes. Everything was normal. It was baller.
Today, that doesn't happen. The screen doesn't come up and all the USB cable does is charge my phone, much like the wall plug does.
I've tried to install USB drivers, but they always require me to find "Android" in Device Manager, and it's never in there. The USB cable is doing nothing but charging my phone.
I managed to add a few mp3s over wifi, just to make sure that was actually working.
The phone is not rooted, (I was actually just going to try to do that) and everything is stock aside from a few apps.
I would really like some insight on this, please.
Do I need to get the phone replaced? Am I doing something wrong?
OK, I new to this, but thought I'd comment. If USB debugging is turned on, my seems to do that.

mine does exactly the same, but all i've done is manually update to 2.3.4 and my usb hasn't worked since, like you i've tried installing the drivers and that's done nothing and its also in usb debugging.
i don't know what to do or how to get it to work again, all my searching on here and via Google don't bring up much

Wow, you're right. My HTC cord worked. Thanks a lot.
I have had this happen on to me and have determined that a) the long cable that came with the NS4G is unreliable when used for USB connectivity with my PC. Shorter cables (even the shorter Samsung cable that came with my Epic) work consistently. I am guessing that this is a USB Bus power issue and some people will have better mileage than others using the stock cable, depending on their PC.
b) on a few occasions, it seems I've somehow borked the PC's USB controller and the PC wouldn't recongnize anything until I rebooted it.

I would like to flash my phone to factory using Samsung Simple downloader for NS4G.
Background, installed Ice Cream but didn't have radio.img so used an SU to downgrade back to 2.3, did that but no mobile network. Then the phone updated to 2.3.6 and now getting that error. Any help will be appreciated.
I searched a few times on this forum and on google.com no luck. tried to adding a recovery file manually and zip it as update.zip and install from bootloader no luck. (use file explorer and dropbox to get files on to phone).
Thanks

Was your phone rooted at any point before the issue? Not sure if they would fix it under warranty for me. I will call Samsung and see.
Thanks, I tried that but no luck. Still need to tried other cords. Also.
My phone developed this problem a couple days ago. I haven't done much to troubleshoot it...figured the port must be damaged.
(Not using the Samsung cable, btw)

It might be the port. I will have to get a samsung cable and try it, but i doubt it will help. Plus i can tell Samsung I tried everything. (I looked a ticket, but they said get a samsung cord, they don't trust the Palm Pre cord i am using).
I had to downgrade to the HTC Hero until i get the phone fixed.
So, yeah, just like what the title says. My NC's touchscreen goes mad when I connect it to my PC (Haven't tried on laptops cuz I don't have one). Well, it doesn't happen to all of my PC's (I've got 3), only the one with 64-bit Win7. And I've tried changing the cable with LG's (forgot the device but whatever) but it's still the same. I've searched on google and most people asked for a replace to fix it (My NC's warranty is over). Is there any other way to fix it? This problem is not a big deal to me (since it didn't occur with my other PC) but it's pretty annoying.
Thanks
EDIT : I'm using CM7 dual boot with PA both in emmc, if this helps

Mine does that when connected to my charger block. Don't know if there is a repair. I think it is a ground loop. You might try the Nook Screen Recalibrate app from the Play Store. That should not help, but may.
Edit: You can also use a standard micro USB cable and see if that helps. Standard micro USB cables can be used for computer connections but do not work well for charging.

imho this maybe power supply quality problem.
I've starting having an issue with my Nexus 7 where it wont charge anymore when it's running, even with the supplied USB charger and cable. If I turn it off it charges fine.
It's got CW recovery and it's rooted, so I thought that it may have developed a software issue and I would just wipe it with the stock rom and recovery and see how it goes.
However I selected debug and plugged it into the PC and the PC doesn't see the device and the device itself doesn't even detect its connected and show the notification. I've also tried on a macbook with no joy.
Using rom manager and CWM I have wiped the device and installed a different ROM (CM 10.1) and still no luck. Also, if it helps, the OTG cable with stick mont works fine.
Any ideas and thanks in advance.

I have tried a few cables now, and it's still that same.
Try a completely different computer other than the 2 you have issues with. You can also try wiping your driver's out and reinstalling them. If all else fails, pup the back off and check the solder joints and the flex cable of the USB.

I've just tried it on a different machine running Ubuntu this time and still nothing.
I'm going to guess that because of the unlocked boot and CWM recovery the warranty wouldn't be covered? If that's the case, how hard is it to pop open the back?
Thanks
No warranty till it is completely stock and locked. It's not hard at all. There are many tutorials you can find.

Thanks graydiggy. I'll see what tutorials I can dig up...
One thing that's strange is that it does charge when off, so you would assume the power joints are ok, and the OTG cable works so you would assume the data joints are fine.
Opened it up, everything seems fine, nice and tight inside.

I have a quick question. It seems that my tablet has lost its ability to connect through USB recently. I was unable to send pictures to the pc one day and have bought numerous cables to no avail. Looks as if, somehow, it just wont connect through usb. The original cable was acting up during charging anyway. My main question is, how do I root without the ability to connect to a pc? Is this at all possible? I was rooted before but since installing the newest update, 10.6.1.27.5-20130902, i noticed it wasn't rooted anymore.Am I pretty much SOL? BTW, nowadays the tablet wakes up and beeps like every other minute while charging. Dont know if its related. I wish I didnt do the update altogether.
Updating to the latest firmware (at last check) hides the developer options from the settings. Your problem might be that USB debugging was disabled or never was enabled.
To add developer settings back into the settings, you need to go into the "about tablet" in settings and tap the build number 5 or so times and then developer options should show up.

If its a cable problem, the cable only costs 5$ on amazon.
I'm on my third replacement cable already. Also, developer options are turned on. USB debugging is on as well. They charge fine but connecting them directly to any computer i have does nothing, almost like not plugging it in at all. Have tried on three different setups that worked before, Win 7 X64, Win 8 X64, Win XP X86.
