and if i wanna reinstall some appz like (Market , Youtube and nook basic browser) ..... do u have any idea
also i wanna add Arabic keyboard to my nook .... if u know method or how develop it , i will appreciate it , cuz i downloaded many keyboards but didnt detect from nook sys
thx any way Renate for ur great support and contribution
I'm not sure about the longevity of the eInk Pearl display.
The manufacturer bandies about a figure of 50,000 hours.
That would be 25 years of 9 to 5 office use.
50,000 hour MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) is a standard value for a reliable product.
I think that they just pulled that figure out of the air.
I don't think that the eInk display "wears out" in any particular fashion.
I've never been a big fan of all those "no-refresh" apps.
I just don't think tinkering outside of an application is the best way to attack.
Three of my applications use direct control of the EpdController internally.
I'm sure that there has to be an Arabic keyboard out there.
Is the problem that they use too high a version of Android?
Renate , i have good news about add Arabic keyboard to nook
ok .... first u must have Arabic keyboard apk and paste them in /system/app and then fo to ur nook color tools and choose ur key board and offcurse install Arabic support for browser then try to type something in ur browser (it wont define as a language) then hit search ....and it will appear and viewed in ur search results , i know it's a partially solution but it works for me
i will take print screen and post it in original thread
Keyboards don't have to be installed in /system/app, a regular install is fine.
Yes you do have to enabled it as a keyboard using Tools or configure it in
settings.db, secure, enabled_input_methods.

Control the speed of your CPU
Pocket Hack Master allows you to change the default speed at which your Pocket PC's processor runs. Make the processor run faster to speed up the operation of your device, or turn it down to increase battery life (the faster a processor runs, the more battery power it uses).
When you first run Pocket Hack Master, you run a series of tests on the device to work out which speeds your processor will support. Once this has been done, pick which speeds are your favorites, and they will be available at the touch of a button to change at will.
Use the CPU load screen to find how much processor speed your favorite applications are using, to work out what processor speed you want to use as your favorite.
Use the process viewer to find out which programs are running in the background on your Pocket PC.
Pocket Hack Master runs in the background, so you can quickly change the speed of the processor from the today screen with just a tap!
WARNING: Overclocking (increasing your processor speeds) can make some devices unstable and can lead to loss of data on the device. Always backup your data before using an untested speed. Some devices overclock better than others and therefore support different highest speeds.

It supports Smart Dial?
Thanks Navjot for such a quick response.
However, before installing this cab, I want to confirm whether this skin supports Smart Dial feature. I am asking this because in many threads I read, it was mention that certain skins do not support Smart Dial or that one has to disable Smart Dial before installing that skin.
Once again thanks a lot for your support.

basically you have to customise the whole thing to your needs , The resouces are plenty in the forum .. Start searching .
Hello dear friends! I am new to this forum.
...Well not entirely new as i was reading up things here already...
1. Is there a way to change the font color of the home screen? (Some backgrounds are too bright)
2. Why is the wallpaper quality (home screen) worse compared to the quality when you open directly?
3. Is it possible to use the small qwerty layout when using GSen, so that you can write with both hands? It would surely speed up writing.
4. Is it possible to update things such as wheather info and the rss hub as soon as the device is connected to the internet via activesync? Both things need the user to start the update...
5. btw: Is there a better rss program avaiable?
6. Is there a way to write sms with outlook?
7. Is there a free dictionary avaiable on the internet (englisch<->german et vice versa)?
8. Is there a calculator which a) looks better b) the ability to plot / solve equations? (i already know "realcalculator")
9. Is there a program that is better than the explorer from microsoft? (I hate that there is no "back button"!)
10. Is there an snes emulator? (I have a snes and 40+ games. I just want to play some mario kart... )
Best regards
p.s. As a little gift because I am new here, I'll provide some of my self-made wallpapers. I hope you like them.
hi and welcome
and thanks
ehm, i can't answer all your questiosn since i only got my Diamond yesterday, but, i'll answer what i can.
4. the weather issue seems to want to connect off a data connection from the phone... so i don't know if theres a fix, but i have not seen one.
5. try spb insight
8. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411561 has a much better looking calculator imo
9. try installing SPB pocket plus to boost your default xplorer's capabilites. otherwise, try resco explorer (pay for it) or Total commander (free)
10. Pocket SNES is the one... Look for the TNT 19209 rom's Vanilla fun package in the Wizard Rom forum, or google for it.
where can i get SNES Roms from? if it isnt allowed to speak of them then im sorry in advance
Thanks

Hello there, first good job for what you've done with this rom, you're a crack
I've got some question, if someone can asnwer at least one of them it would make me happy
General :
* Is there any way to make or include some g_ether (or anything like this) module in it ? I would prefer to get networking instead of adb/storage.
* Is it possible also to disable the "wifi-firewall" ? I mean, I installed a debian in my SD card, so that I can have a real linu dsitro and tools and also an SSH and Samba server. But I could only connect to it locally or by opening ports with adb forward... it's kinda lame isn't it... just because wifi won't even answers to pings... where is it supposed to be stored ?
* I would like to know also where is the startup script file, because I would only want to auto-initialize the debian install, and why not auto-start some applications that I would build for myself and want to run at phone start.
4.1.999 specific :
* The parameters for the camera aren't working. If I start the camera, press menu and select the Settings item, the app crashes and is launch again (I use french locale if that changes anything).
* The "rotation" animation is not available anymore... perhaps because the rotation time is very fast now too. I prefered the "old-grandma-clock-like" rotation animation, and not he blur one.
* The small Google search widget is nice, but as long as it still takes one row, it's kind of ugly in fact... it makes a huge space under it and you cannot put anything in that space, that's a bit frustrating. Is there a way to get back to the old big widget ?
* I tested 4.1.999 on a second HTC Magic and it seems to be nice and all that, despite I didn't tested all things but, when I'll choose to update my actual stable 4.0.4, and if I don't want to lose my SMS for example, how can I do ? Is there any way to export/import them ?
Thanks in advance for the answers.
this isn't Q&A. Post in right forum
Reported
Answering to myself for one of my questions : seems to exist some programs on Market to backup/restore some user data, including SMS/MMS etc. I'll try these. If you've got some good examples of these programs, I would be glad to know about it.
Edit: One good program (not free) is : MyBackup Pro. Did the job just nicely. The only drawback is that the archive format is proprietary so you cannot use it in other software (not XML for example).

WHAT TO DO WITH
___My Nook Simple Touch
I would like to create a thread to help people to make their choice about what to do with their nooks.
What mod should I choose ? why ? can i do this ? to avoid the "if only i've had installed this mod
instead of this one at the time".
Should I update my firmware (now 1.0.1) and to which version ? is there any disadvantage ?
Update to 1.2.1 , you will get a good dictionnary and there is no real reason to stay on earlier versions.
Which Mod should I get and install ? Advantages and disavantage ?
NookManager seems to be the latest and best firmware for now. (30/01/2014)
Can I update android ?
You can't, you will stay Android 2.1 forever
What app should i install ? Compatible with nook ?
Best apps for Nook simple touch (@mantion thread)

Others ?...
Should I install a norefresh tweak, which one is the best ?
Tweaks :
AZERTY Keyboard and Language + general settingsMust have
Nook Color Tools (working on Nook Simple Touch) You can choose your keyboards settings, and under "Settings/Developpment" you can choose your language for the whole system. It also changes your keyboard to your region's one (azerty for me)
to install Nook Color Tools, use a file manager to move the .apk to system/app, then install it
Keyboards
Download the keyboard you're willing to use, with file manager move the file to system/app then install it. Then use Nook Color Tools to choose the Third Party Keyboard you wanna use. (Also possible with the twitter app from whati saw : Long press on text field/choose input method)
I wan't to get a keyboard. Which ones will work, which one are you using ?
( I'm personnaly looking for something like this but this one is bluetooth only

My opinion may be different than others because I am not a big fan of multi-use devices. I only use my Nook for reading. If you want to do something that needs "norefresh" "fast refresh" or whatever, go buy a tablet.
I have rooted my 1.2.1 Glowlight with NookManager. I have installed YouVersion Bible 2.4.1 and Orion PDF viewer. NookManager installs Button Savior. These are the only apps I really use besides the stock reader.

I agree with you my nook is to be for a restricted use. However this thread is created for any user willing to know what are their options.
In my personnal use. I'm willing to use it for reading : blogs, books, PDF, wikipedia. And maybe for writing (if i find the right keyboard and app)
So its my "knowledge device" output (reading) and input (writing)
If norefresh tweaks have no downsides, It could be better for writing (see the letters showing as fast as they are typed)
That's how i see it.

I use the free Aard Dictionary (aarddict.android.apk). See http://aarddict.org/index.html and http://f-droid.org/wiki/page/aarddict.android.
I use the NST for reading novels with CoolReader, and read bridge (card game) on pdf files with APV PDF Viewer, and Word documents with Mantano Reader. All work very well, but APV has no book-marking, and choosing the best fonts settings for the NST on CoolReader is decidedly tricky. For occasional web browsing, Opera Mobile is fine. For quick notes, I use Color Note Notepad . I also use Dropbox, Titanium Backup and Adfree.
Rooting the NST far exceeded my expectations. I uses it twice as often as I did before rooting, mainly because the stock NST will only read epubs properly.
post updated with overall language tweak for android/keyboard/nookapps (with Nook Color Tools)
Hiya Everyone,
I've just rooted my Nook Simple Touch and have it all working from a USB keyboard which is great!
I really need the Nook as my unit has no mains electricity and I use solar panels instead which can be difficult at times as they are mounted in the window and are facing the wrong way really but it is what it is. I know everyone is alarmed at the amount of power it uses when in USB mode but it's nothing compared to the 5 watts my DAB radio pulls! To be honest it's even at lot less than the 1.5watts of the LED light!
Anyway it's basically great but I want to get it working as well as I can for my application.
I'm using a new text editor from F-Droid called Text Warrior:
https://f-droid.org/repository/brow...com.myopicmobile.textwarrior.android&fdpage=4
It's the best text editor I've found for the Nook so far and it's also a GNU application with source code!
If you havn't already checked out the F-Droid stuff I really recommend it as a lot of the apps there work on the Nook and it can be hard to find stuff for the earlier versions of Android.
Anyway that's my setup. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to assign keys on my USB keyboard to do different things and how I would go about doing that? For instance it might be cool if I could use the Esc key as a back button or the extended win keys menu key as an android menu button and things like page up and page down etc. How could I go about setting the keys up for different functions? Anyone have any idea?

You can easily change what your keyboard keys do in the file /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl. I personally use a very good modified one by Renate with a few of my own modifications.
Thanks so much Nookie! That looks great! I will try and install it today.
I'm also running the Nookie terminal emulator BTW which I think must be something to do with you?
Right off to give it a go!

It might. I did make a few modifications to the original Terminal Emulator and probably put it up for download somewhere here on the forums. What's the package name (/data/app)?
How'd the .kl installation go for you?
I discovered Noogie and after a lot of messing about I managed to get the qwerty.kl installed and working quite well.
Sadly it seems it's not going to be easy to reprogram for a UK keyboard though as you can only reprogram entire keys and not their shifted states.
In the UK the @ and " symbols are swapped with one another but on the upside the # key now does a # so that's nice.
I'm going to get used to the USA keyboard layout and be driven nuts when I switch back to a UK keyboard again!
I'm sure the terminal emulator must be your version as it has nookie in the filename.

Thanks Renate,
I ended up sitting in a hotel room with a hex editor but I got it to work and have since spent quite some time on Solar with the Nook.
Thanks again for your help with that!
Now I'm back to civilisation for a while and I'm wondering if it is possible to get the cursor keys to work properly too.
They don't seem to move up and down and side to side in the text in the way I would expect!
Is it possible to fix that as well or is that just an android feature!

Is it possible to fix that as well or is that just an android feature!

Does this happen when your Nook is in portrait mode, landscape mode, or both?
If they work correctly in portrait but don't work right in landscape, there is a fix that I applied several months ago that resolves the issue.

OUCH! Yes you are totally right.
I'm using an ipad stand from a pound shop to hold the Nook in place and it fits quite nicely in Landscape.
Also I just find it's a bit more like a normal laptop setup when in Landscape mode too.
I didn't click what was happening. Doh!
So how do I go about fixing that?
I guess I have to swap the cusor keys around?
Freya
@FreyaBlack,
Kind of, yeah. Follow the instructions at this post by Renate to apply a patch to /system/framework/services.jar that will prevent your arrow keys from rotating when in landscape mode.
Good to go!
I'm back to civilisation for a while but sadly I havn't been able to get this to work. I don't quite understand what you are supposed to do and I usually use ssh or similar rather than adb.
What does this mean?
Then you edit in the replacement in smali/com/android/server/KeyInputQueue.smali

I assume I need to change services.jar in some way.
Do I use the attached file?
Freya
@FreyaBlack,
After you acquire services.jar on your PC, the next step is to decompile it using this command:
Code:
apktool d services.jar
Then, go into the root folder of where you decompiled that file, and navigate to the .\smali\com\android\server\ directory. In that folder, locate the file KeyInputQueue.smali. Open that file with a good text editor (like Notepad++ on Windows), delete the entire contents and copy/paste in the entire contents of the partf.txt file attached to Renate's post I linked two posts above. Save that file.
Now, all you have to do is recompile the edited services.jar file using this command:
Code:
apktool b [the directory where you extracted the file originally] services.jar
Only thing left after that is to replace the existing services.jar on your Nook (located in /system/framework) with the one you just created, reboot your Nook, and you're good to go.
You can also use my mergesmali utility to merge correctly formatted patches.
nook121patch.zip has patches for various things that can be selectively supplied.
They are both found in the signature under "mergesmali".
Hiya Renate,
So you mean I can find a patch for the file or something and use mergesmali to apply it?
I assume Nookie is saying I need the Android SDK or the java sdk to make the changes but by doing this patch thing I can sort this without having to do that?
I have my hex editor to hand but a whole SDK is more than my 3G connection can handle right now!
