[Q] Nook Simple Touch On Solar Power - Nook Touch General

Hiya Everyone,
I've just rooted my Nook Simple Touch and have it all working from a USB keyboard which is great!
I really need the Nook as my unit has no mains electricity and I use solar panels instead which can be difficult at times as they are mounted in the window and are facing the wrong way really but it is what it is. I know everyone is alarmed at the amount of power it uses when in USB mode but it's nothing compared to the 5 watts my DAB radio pulls! To be honest it's even at lot less than the 1.5watts of the LED light!
Anyway it's basically great but I want to get it working as well as I can for my application.
I'm using a new text editor from F-Droid called Text Warrior:
https://f-droid.org/repository/brow...com.myopicmobile.textwarrior.android&fdpage=4
It's the best text editor I've found for the Nook so far and it's also a GNU application with source code!
If you havn't already checked out the F-Droid stuff I really recommend it as a lot of the apps there work on the Nook and it can be hard to find stuff for the earlier versions of Android.
Anyway that's my setup. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to assign keys on my USB keyboard to do different things and how I would go about doing that? For instance it might be cool if I could use the Esc key as a back button or the extended win keys menu key as an android menu button and things like page up and page down etc. How could I go about setting the keys up for different functions? Anyone have any idea?

You can easily change what your keyboard keys do in the file /system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl. I personally use a very good modified one by Renate with a few of my own modifications.

Thanks so much Nookie! That looks great! I will try and install it today.
I'm also running the Nookie terminal emulator BTW which I think must be something to do with you?
Right off to give it a go!

It might. I did make a few modifications to the original Terminal Emulator and probably put it up for download somewhere here on the forums. What's the package name (/data/app)?
How'd the .kl installation go for you?

I discovered Noogie and after a lot of messing about I managed to get the qwerty.kl installed and working quite well.
Sadly it seems it's not going to be easy to reprogram for a UK keyboard though as you can only reprogram entire keys and not their shifted states.
In the UK the @ and " symbols are swapped with one another but on the upside the # key now does a # so that's nice.
I'm going to get used to the USA keyboard layout and be driven nuts when I switch back to a UK keyboard again!
I'm sure the terminal emulator must be your version as it has nookie in the filename.

Thanks Renate,
I ended up sitting in a hotel room with a hex editor but I got it to work and have since spent quite some time on Solar with the Nook.
Thanks again for your help with that!
Now I'm back to civilisation for a while and I'm wondering if it is possible to get the cursor keys to work properly too.
They don't seem to move up and down and side to side in the text in the way I would expect!
Is it possible to fix that as well or is that just an android feature!

Does this happen when your Nook is in portrait mode, landscape mode, or both?
If they work correctly in portrait but don't work right in landscape, there is a fix that I applied several months ago that resolves the issue.

OUCH! Yes you are totally right.
I'm using an ipad stand from a pound shop to hold the Nook in place and it fits quite nicely in Landscape.
Also I just find it's a bit more like a normal laptop setup when in Landscape mode too.
I didn't click what was happening. Doh!
So how do I go about fixing that?
I guess I have to swap the cusor keys around?
Freya

@FreyaBlack,
Kind of, yeah. Follow the instructions at this post by Renate to apply a patch to /system/framework/services.jar that will prevent your arrow keys from rotating when in landscape mode.
Good to go!

I'm back to civilisation for a while but sadly I havn't been able to get this to work. I don't quite understand what you are supposed to do and I usually use ssh or similar rather than adb.
What does this mean?
Then you edit in the replacement in smali/com/android/server/KeyInputQueue.smali

I assume I need to change services.jar in some way.
Do I use the attached file?
Freya

@FreyaBlack,
After you acquire services.jar on your PC, the next step is to decompile it using this command:
Code:
apktool d services.jar
Then, go into the root folder of where you decompiled that file, and navigate to the .\smali\com\android\server\ directory. In that folder, locate the file KeyInputQueue.smali. Open that file with a good text editor (like Notepad++ on Windows), delete the entire contents and copy/paste in the entire contents of the partf.txt file attached to Renate's post I linked two posts above. Save that file.
Now, all you have to do is recompile the edited services.jar file using this command:
Code:
apktool b [the directory where you extracted the file originally] services.jar
Only thing left after that is to replace the existing services.jar on your Nook (located in /system/framework) with the one you just created, reboot your Nook, and you're good to go.

You can also use my mergesmali utility to merge correctly formatted patches.
nook121patch.zip has patches for various things that can be selectively supplied.
They are both found in the signature under "mergesmali".

Hiya Renate,
So you mean I can find a patch for the file or something and use mergesmali to apply it?
I assume Nookie is saying I need the Android SDK or the java sdk to make the changes but by doing this patch thing I can sort this without having to do that?
I have my hex editor to hand but a whole SDK is more than my 3G connection can handle right now!

Skins for signal, connection and speaker icons in taskbar

Hi
Does anybody know where the skins are for the signal strength button the connection state button and the volume button are.
As you can see in the image below im trying to set a green theme with the txt on my exec and these icons don't go as they are white.
Many thanks
Scott
There built into some of the ROM dlls I think. Most people skin the bar with WisBar or similar.
V
I Suspected as much that these were related to dll's
Does anybody know which dll's they are.
I did use to use wisbar but i found that there was just to much lag with it.
I would like to know this to as i also think that wisbar lags up the device to mutch
Anybody got any ideas.
I think if we can crack this 1 it may also helps us understand how to remove the dam battery icon in the new imate rom and let us put the clock back.
shellres.96.dll
V
Microsoft design guidelines demand that these symbols remain white... Not that this will stop you but I thought you should know.

Is there anything on this board that is within the Microsoft guidelines!?

This looks kick ass! When did you cook this one now???
San, that's a screenshot from VJSmallIcons II, which will turn your "programs" launcher fullscreen and permit changing the view style (look up VJSmallIcons to see what the original did). The new version, although looking simple, requires a lot of voodoo in the background, but it's a test platform for stuff I'm developing for VJToggleToday II.
VJSmallIcons II should be out quite soon, just one or two more tweaks to retain settings in the registry and it'll be out for test releases.
scotjen1: to come back On topic, I've never tried overriding that dll, but I presume you could try the same technique used by Azhad here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=34995&highlight=
to create a new resource dll to override the original icons etc. It'd be a nice hack to try.
V
V
Great work with VJsmallicons II looking good.
Now back to the skinning. I have managed to copy the shellres.96.dll (great work for that V would have never known that) to my desktop and have used resource hacker to extract the ico files from it.
I then found a program called easy icon maker (good program works well) and have managed to change the colour of these icons.
When i then replace the resource with resource hacker it show as if it has been replaced i then load the DLL back in to the windows dir and get an error saying this file is in use and can't be overwritten but i use resco and it gave me an option to continue which i presume forces it to be over written. I then soft reset and bang the icons are exactly the same. Any idea's ?
Also just 1 other thing when changing the icons they were set to 16 x 16 and 2 colours so i had to change this to 16 x 16 and 16 colours would this have made a difference also.
scotjen1: it's likely to be more involved then that (as if that wasn't enough!).
You will have to have a read through Azhad's thread above, and the VGA files thread. What you need to do on WM5 is, I believe, although I have no direct experience in this area, is to create a resource only dll containing the icons you want to replace. 16 colours should make no difference. But I believe the resource ids need to match the original.
That needs to be signed (check the first few VGA files posts for info of how this was done originally, and find the signer, called SignIt, posted by BeyondTheTech I believe), and then save the file as an .mui file so that it gets loaded over the top of the original shell file. That shell file is unlikely to be replaceable whatever Resco thinks.
Have a read through Azhad's thread, decompile his .mui files and that should point you in the right direction.
V
V
Wow that does sound quite a challenge still though im not going to let it beat me lol.
I have got Azhad's files at home (i presume you are talking about the power backlight and wifi files) i will have a go at trying to decompile them tonight see if it can shed some light on the situaion.
As for the signing wasn't there a cab flying around somewhere that disabled this or am i completly going off track here.
You still need to sign the dlls for WM5.
SignCode:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=191136#191136
I really can't say if any of this is correct, as I said, it's something I've thought about but never bothered with. I'm working on my own skinner for the bar, but this method should be effective + no overhead.
You don't need to decompile Azhad's stuff, just resource hack it to see what he's put in the dlls. In fact, use his dlls, empty it out, stuff it with your stuff and re-sign.
V
Nice that sounds a little bit easier lol.
Will give it a try when the work day ends will keep you posted on the progress.

registry findings ?

I want to find some things in the registry and perhaps run a clone of the device itself on the PC so that I can test some things out. I understand there is a way to emulate a device on the PC. Is that correct? How?
Also, I need a way to export the MDA registry so that it can be opened and searched within Windows XP. Is this possible?
Things I want to find initially in the MDA in the registry.
mapping for the green phone key among other keys
backlight for phone keys and keyboard keys.
Use a good registry editor or Visual Studio.
I use Kilmist. I understand Total Commander is good.
Export registry in standard PC format and then copy to pc, browse in notepad. Just DON'T import it by accident onto pc.
You can't just copy a registry into the emulator - they are based on different hardware designs. Most stuff will work, some is likely to screw up emulator. No permanent damage, but bare it in mind.
What device are you looking for these keys on?
I can tell you that the settings for backlight for green and red key and keyboard backlight aren't settled in the registry. Some settings there, but not all.. at least AFAIK.

IC... No wonder nobody had found a way to map them. However there is software that maps hardware keys for other devices. If not settled in the registry then where/what/how is the software changing them?
Hi all, where can I found a full descriptions of every single registry key & function/purpose of those key. Now I become interested to play with this setting. I know that are VERY DANGEROUS thing. Appreciate for help

And it's frowned upon by T-Mobile. Watch out for the phone police .
Now now, lets not scare any one.
Playing with registry on windows mobile device is only dangerous if you care about whats on that device and don't want to hard reset. Otherwise you can go ahead an experiment as hard reset will restore original reg settings.
Oh and as for the phone police, well they don't carry real guns do they?
But seriously there is no list of every reg key. Registry is a general settings database for the whole windows mobile OS and the apps on it. It was designed to replace a hoard of ini files.
Documentation of relevant settings is usually attached to documentation of what ever they control (if there is any such documentation) and since any app can write to the registry there may be settings no one ever documented (there certainly are undocumented settings for the system it self like NeverDorkMemory).
Guys, you should know what you're doing when playing with the registry. But it's always best to make a backup. You'll find it hard to irrepairably damage your phone (which is always fixable by a hardreset or rom flash) in the registy, but a backup is safer.
zaidam - seriously man, what do you think we do here? If microsoft gave us a list of every registy setting, a lot of guys would be out of a job, it'd be too easy! If you're brave enough, experiment with the registry and discover a new hack. If not, just browse around and see what's possible through the registry hacks.
trpenner - you answered your own question with a different answer. The keyboard can be remapped, quite easily. Some of it can be done though the registy, some requires apps like AE Button Plus. AEBP doesn't use the registy (I presume) because it requires a lower level of programming not exposed by the registry.
However, the red and green key are not mappable (AFAIK) through the registry alone.

It's the red/green keys I am after. Maybe one day we someone smarter than I will be willing to take up the challenge.
As I said, they can certainly be reassigned through code, fairly easily, but not through the registry alone I believe.

Hey guys,
I want to know what cool program, functionality, or software you would like to see created. I am a .net programmer (among others) and would like some ideas of projects you would like to see. I would like to stay away from a graphic intense program and involved games, so think functionality, usefulness, fun, etc. If I get some good ideas, I will then add a poll, vote on the best one, then build it. I will release it under my donationware license which means it will be free. Right now I am finishing up my Golf Gps program (and will continue to support), but will start this project once we get it deceided. So Shoot me your ideas!

Hi,
Maybe simple for .NET, but for me impossible to do (without performance/battery penaulty) with basic4ppc or mortscript. And thats all I can handle.
What I would like to have is a program that enables me to execute programs when specific events occur. I'd like to know when AC power gets connected/disconnected, when there is a change in screen orientation, and when a headset gets connected/disconnected and so on. Maybe even when an internet connection through WIFI is available/unavailable.
Also I'd like to know is a specific BT device is connectable/conneted. I'd like to know if a specific WIFI network is connectable/connected. I'd like to know if I'm at a specific location. All event driven, without a performance consuming programing loop or battery drain.
Yeah, all or even some of those options would make my digital mobile life so much easier
Good luck huntig for input, if you ever get bored contact me and make me happy
Cheers,

Doable, handy, not a massive undertaking, I like it! Not sure I would go the .net route on something like this, as really a GUI is not required (except for settings maybe) and the overhead is large with .net. Certainly will add it to the list. Keep them coming!!

This would be pretty difficult unless all of developers used the same programming langauge/technique. The only real feasable way I see this working would be developers using a common set of graphics. That would be more of a graphic undertaking instead of programming. I do like the idea, but pretty hard to impliment.
Thanks

I would love to see something like Launchy for launching apps and files etc. as well as quick search of various types online. I'm guessing the on the fly search would require too much processing power, but if it's doable it would be awesome.
http://www.launchy.net/
I'm interested in new ideas too. I also use B4PPC.
Here's a few ideas:
-A tamagotchi, really. I was about to try this out tonight but Paint hates me.
-An app launcher like PetitLaunch on PalmOS. It's something that can pop from any app (hardware button) and when you type in extra letters it filters which apps are shown. I got this started and I can give you the files if you want.
-Pursue the development for Tippy. The source is on Nicbou.com/downloads if you want it.
-A time clock. A friend of mine notes down how long he works to make sure he doesn't get screwed and it takes him several minutes every week. He doesn't have a Pocket PC but maybe someone would be interested in something that tracks the hours you work and calculate the salary. I almost did this too.
And don't forget to share the source! If you need any help with B4PPC I'm here

Sounds simular to the app launcher listed in the next post, seems like there is a theme going on here, you all need some sort of good app launcher.

I'd like the Launchy features for search-on-the-fly off on board apps and file launching, but ever more for different site searches (google, maps, wikipedia, live, youtube, Amazon, etc).

I had to look up tamagotchi, either I am too old, or just out of the loop to know that 10 million of these things were sold! Wow! That could be fun, but would take a pretty fancy AI type system to really be fun.
A form of Tippy is already out there, 1-calc has some of the features built in already.
A time clock could be cool, maybe a stop watch type thing perhaps?
Never used B4PPC, I mainly use C# and Visual Studio. It looks like the old Visual Basic for desktops. And last but not least, depending on the project, I more than likely will release the source.
Thanks!!! Keep'em comin!

File Explorer Needs Help
Has anyone wanted to see a preview image in explorer's folder??
I'm not talking about fexplorerext2. although it is a fantastic enhancement; it takes a long time to load the preview immages.
I have a better idea (well, actualy MS thought of it first)
THUMBS.DB
for every folder that has an image file, this dll is created to replace cache of images. this way ou do not have to load it everytime and scale them down for thumbnail view. it is already there specificaly for each folder.
This alows the explorer to show a preview of the first image in the folder (or last created/accessed)
This is whatt I think WinMo is lacking - windows. lol.
I do not care much for the tabbed browsing. it hurts my head. too much scroling and not enough info. Icons work better I think, and waste less space on an already small screen.
well, that's been on my wishlist for a very long time. a dll that ataches to the already existing explorer making it work better.
Thanks for workin g on something new
program that makes led lights flash when phone rings would be nice
Interesting...I will have to think about how to tackle that. It would basically take a new file explorer (like total commander). This might be a bit larger than I want to tackle, but will research it a bit before ruling it out.

This would be very difficult as not every device handles the leds the same. Also, not every device has the same leds (color, # of, etc). I think No2Chem has a int. driver, but think it is only for the titan. Would be cool though...

a system-wide launcher dock program like that on the velocity 103 PPC..
here's the URL for the review and video of the app (and the phone)
-------------------------------------------------------------
a new top bar replacemeent/notification system much like the "android Notification Drawer" it can replace the bubble (multiple) notifications icon when you got multiple and simultaneous notifications.. and also make it finger friendly (unlike M2D, no need to go back to homescreen to check email/sms previes and also calendar events, calls, etc.. also unlike big taskbar - from the touch phones, this'll have previews)

Fexplorer2 is basically a dll that works with the original file explorer context menu. there is a small exe that overwrites the original explorer to make it think that the explorer"s context menu has already been opened.
in a way it maybe possible to write a new dll and two exe
EXE 1 to replace the file explorer
EXE 2 to make thumbs db
DLL (conte4xt menu that alows to view as thumbnails/list etc ; as well as launching the second exe to make a thumbsdb)
maybe you can get some help from Hou Ming, the guy that made that program before.
it would be cool if you could get some of the old emus like pocket gba and pocket snes with window 6.1 I know i would be happy.

I have been looking for a program that would stop the music (S2P, Audio Manager, or WMP etc...) if during playback of the music the headset is removed. Or for instance, when the device is on vibrate and you connect headset, it automatically changes profile to normal or something.
Another one is when I dock my device (or connect AC basically), I'd like clock program (or home screen, or photo slideshow, etc...) to come up automatically.
A feature that I miss from my older phones is the ability to set them to beep every minute during a phone call.
Now these are very general and not specific features. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me!
Thank you,

a system-wide launcher dock program like that on the velocity 103 PPC..
here's the URL for the review and video of the app (and the phone)

a new top bar replacemeent/notification system much like the "android Notification Drawer" it can replace the bubble (multiple) notifications icon when you got multiple and simultaneous notifications.. and also make it finger friendly (unlike M2D, no need to go back to homescreen to check email/sms previes and also calendar events, calls, etc.. also unlike big taskbar - from the touch phones, this'll have previews)

The launcher on the 103 looks a lot like manilla, I know it is diff, but to me it seems mainly by presentation, not functionality. I do however like the notification top bar like that on android. Not sure how difficult taking over the top bar would be. I will do some digging.

Can you give me a link to this? The only thing I could find (quickly) was sketchy at best. Still seems a bit much, but would like to know more about this Fexplorer2 thing before nuking the idea.

aDosBox v0.2beta (with virtual keyboard) just released

Please help us test it out and report bugs/issues. Thanks
Just search "adosbox" in Google, I am not allowed to post external URL here.
Any kinds of help are welcome
Hi, i downloaded this last night for one reason and one reason only (for now anyway) - to play championship manager and i managed to get it start a new game it took over an hour to do it and then simple things like changing pages takes over a min so it esentially unplayable.
Other that great work and i wish i could be of more help but im afraid ive never done any software programming in my life
Wow, this is perfect so far. I just tried cyberdogs on it and it ran amazing. The program is really easy to get running. Is there a way to mount hard keyboards to the controls?
Just tried it. works like a charm.
Yep, works awesome.

I am really enjoying adosbox right now on my Transformer, but lack of 3.1 mouse support has saddened me to the point where I compiled from source myself. I have it working sort of (on the java end), but because the build screen size doesn't match with the actual screen size, I am having issues with the mouse not following perfectly. I would like to get mouse support working better for 3.1 devices (and probably better emulation going for pre 3.1 devices), but I need to edit some of the C files for that. Unfortunately I have not done much native code on Android, so I am running into problems compiling. The ndk-build script seems to fail on me with an error of "missing separator" in the SDL-1.2 make file. Sadly I have never used make so I don't know how to correct it.
Today I saw the build_instructions.txt in jni/application/dosbox/. Are you building through this instead of the ndk (do I need to get gcc ARM cross compiling installed on my linux box)? In either case where does the dosbox-0.74-cfg-pelyaSDL.tar.gz come from?
Any help you could give me in getting the native part to build would be appreciated. Then I can focus on getting some usability stuff working and throw patches your way.
P.S. The feedback page is broken.
Hi. That's great news.
I love dosbox an I appreciate your work.
If you don't mind I will post some issues here.
I've installed adosbox 0.2.5 on my Desire Z.
I've tried to run some apps and games.
Dos Navigaror: Usable.
1. Mouse trackpad emulation works quite well, however it only moves in x,y axis separately. No intermediate directions (I suppose the hardware does not allow it). Any possibilities to solve this?
2. Touch screen mouse movement works quite well - however with delay.
2a. Well, sometimes there is no mouse. I swing on the screen with no effect.
3. It does not respond to screen tap as a left mouse click. Well it works sometimes. I have no control on that.
3a It does not respond to double tap (double click) at all.
4. No possibility to bind/emulate arrow keys. I can't find such function in dosbox menus. ---edit --- I could bind some keys but... see the edit part down there.
5. On PC I've been using config to autostart Dos Navigator with dosbox start. How to do it on Android? I couldn't find .conf file on my device.
System shock: starts but unplayable.
1. I've got a slide show. I've increased the CPU cycle to 1000 even to 2500 with no satisfactory effect.
2. On screen mouse movement works but the cursor jumps into different position when tapping.
3. With no option for binding keys this game is 100% unplayable.
Hocus Pocus: works but no arrow keys.
1. It starts nicely.
2. It reacts on "FN" key - the hero is shooting.
3. However no hardware arrow keys makes the game unplayable. Moving with trackpad sucks so much that the game is unplayable.
Oxyd Magnum: Playable but not exciting.
1. It react on taping the screen.
2. On screen mouse works well but with some ugly delay. This takes out most of the fun.
So the main issues I see are the cpu speed, mouse delay and the hw keys binding.
You are making a great job.
However making dos games being fun on the phone needs good controls workaround. Without that - no fun.
Thank you.
Don't forget we appreciate your work.
-------------edit-----------
Keys binding:
The .dosbox\mapper-0.74.map file (the file for binding keys) can not be found from the phone level. It must be done from a PC level. It's not a big issue but what to hide the file for?
After rebinding left FN, left shift and tab keys Hocus Pocus is quite playable.
It would be nice if you provide us the list of numbers for HW keys on some devices.
I can't bind "menu" as right arrow. And I can't bind search, sym, and the two shortcut keys. They are left useles.
And binding some keys as arrows disables trackpad!
Sound:
No mater what number I set for cycles I can't make the sound to play smoothly.
Any suggestions?
Someone knowns the makefile system for adosbox "libapplication.so"?
Ive been trying for a long time to recompile adosbox for mips, and i still unable to compile that file, not even for arm.
Hello,
I am using aDOSBox to run QBASIC (yes I know there are "better" and "faster" interpreters/compliers, but some have bad issues, see one comment about writting files on X-11 BASIC, others have a max file size) with an external keyboard (so I can see the screen while typing - can you make the virtual keyboard transparent?).
I have found that some keys do not work nor processed correctly in this version (freshly gotten from Google Play), namely the "." when shifted (I get ":" every time, all other punction keys appear to be fine). At first I though this was a KCM problem (had problems with mismapped keys on a Droid X), but while I was briefly able to rooted my tablet (someone please read/question my post/question about the Azpen A701 rooting) I was able to view the generic.kcm and other kcm files (lost root right after this) and those files define the shift period combination correctly. Also I get a ">" when I hit that combination in the 920 Text Editor.
Function keys seem to send to Android key processes (opening/launching other apps) instead of work in the program. Insert, Delete, Home, and End do not seem to be working at all.

I can't use the letter "Q"

I have an Android box, well, I have about 5 but this one is the fastest and the rest are in storage, and all seems to be working pretty well except...I can't find any way to type the letter "Q." Not upper case, nor lower case. Not using the on-screen keyboard, nor my external mini keyboard. I can't use it in web browsers or search bars on system settings menus or file browsers or anywhere else I can think to try it.
All the other letters an numbers seem to work fine. The modifer keys seem to work as well, as far as I can tell (the mini keyboard has some shortcut keys I have no guide for so I can't be POSITIVE they are fine but there haven't been issues). The box is a media center, but I haven't really set that part up. I'm currently living in a motel and its the closest thing I have to a computer, so I've been using it for general purposes like browsing, YouTube, and unfortunately WRITING which my current job requires. Thankfully, I found a file with an uppercase and lowercase "Q" in the filename so I can cut and paste but that's really cumbersome.
The box has a root-switch in the settings that I haven't messed with. It also has an on-screen keyboard that won't go away when I use the external keyboard - but I can live with that. It doesn't seem to recognize the external keyboard as an actual keyboard and it might be because it uses an RF receiver instead of bluetooth.
I came here because my dad said it might be a problem with the motherboard and if that's the case I'm going to be cutting and pasting until I can find housing. But on the off chance that there's any way around it, you guys would be the ones to figure it out. I've been untangling the idea in my brain for how to maybe set up a macro for about the last half hour. I have external keyboard helper pro purchased also if that's of any help. Dunno. If you have questions for specifics I will help as best I can. Sorry if this is an odd or out of place Q. haha ... Q
Thanks guys
Its all I can afford to work with right now so I gotta do what I can
