WHAT TO DO WITH
___My Nook Simple Touch
I would like to create a thread to help people to make their choice about what to do with their nooks.
What mod should I choose ? why ? can i do this ? to avoid the "if only i've had installed this mod
instead of this one at the time".
Should I update my firmware (now 1.0.1) and to which version ? is there any disadvantage ?
Update to 1.2.1 , you will get a good dictionnary and there is no real reason to stay on earlier versions.
Which Mod should I get and install ? Advantages and disavantage ?
NookManager seems to be the latest and best firmware for now. (30/01/2014)
Can I update android ?
You can't, you will stay Android 2.1 forever
What app should i install ? Compatible with nook ?
Best apps for Nook simple touch (@mantion thread)
Offline wikipedia
Others ?...
Should I install a norefresh tweak, which one is the best ?
Tweaks :
AZERTY Keyboard and Language + general settingsMust have
Nook Color Tools (working on Nook Simple Touch) You can choose your keyboards settings, and under "Settings/Developpment" you can choose your language for the whole system. It also changes your keyboard to your region's one (azerty for me)
to install Nook Color Tools, use a file manager to move the .apk to system/app, then install it
Keyboards
Download the keyboard you're willing to use, with file manager move the file to system/app then install it. Then use Nook Color Tools to choose the Third Party Keyboard you wanna use. (Also possible with the twitter app from whati saw : Long press on text field/choose input method)
I wan't to get a keyboard. Which ones will work, which one are you using ?
( I'm personnaly looking for something like this but this one is bluetooth only
http://www.amazon.com/Perixx-PERIBO...qid=1390954285&sr=8-1&keywords=PERIBOARD-805L )

No one has any advice ?

- The latest firmware, with its good dictionary, is best.
- NookManager is the latest and best.
- It's Android 2.1 forever.
- Offline Wikipedia is wonderful.
- for best apps, search the website.

I'm waiting for any advice from someone who tested a "norefresh" patch. Which one is the best if there is many and is there any downside ?
I'm also waiting for any others tips you would like to share.

My opinion may be different than others because I am not a big fan of multi-use devices. I only use my Nook for reading. If you want to do something that needs "norefresh" "fast refresh" or whatever, go buy a tablet.
I have rooted my 1.2.1 Glowlight with NookManager. I have installed YouVersion Bible 2.4.1 and Orion PDF viewer. NookManager installs Button Savior. These are the only apps I really use besides the stock reader.

I agree with you my nook is to be for a restricted use. However this thread is created for any user willing to know what are their options.
In my personnal use. I'm willing to use it for reading : blogs, books, PDF, wikipedia. And maybe for writing (if i find the right keyboard and app)
So its my "knowledge device" output (reading) and input (writing)
If norefresh tweaks have no downsides, It could be better for writing (see the letters showing as fast as they are typed)
That's how i see it.

I use the free Aard Dictionary (aarddict.android.apk). See http://aarddict.org/index.html and http://f-droid.org/wiki/page/aarddict.android.
I use the NST for reading novels with CoolReader, and read bridge (card game) on pdf files with APV PDF Viewer, and Word documents with Mantano Reader. All work very well, but APV has no book-marking, and choosing the best fonts settings for the NST on CoolReader is decidedly tricky. For occasional web browsing, Opera Mobile is fine. For quick notes, I use Color Note Notepad . I also use Dropbox, Titanium Backup and Adfree.
Rooting the NST far exceeded my expectations. I uses it twice as often as I did before rooting, mainly because the stock NST will only read epubs properly.

post updated with overall language tweak for android/keyboard/nookapps (with Nook Color Tools)

pdf files better way?

I'm frustrated by the way pdf's are forced to completely redraw (or maybe reload) themselves when you scroll around within a page. It makes them a time consuming hassle. Is there any way to make it scroll smoothly? I'm using the clearvue pdf viewer that was loaded with the Cingular 812555.
u have mobipocket and others, but most of them arnt free...
http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eNews/default.asp
and im not sure if it solves ur problem, i just suggest alternatives to try...
Thanks trashman for the suggestion. I'm not worried about paying for the program if it does the trick (though of course I would rather find it for free). Does anybody out there know if mobipocket will help smooth out scrolling when viewing PDF's?

It won't display PDF's, you'll need to convert them, which may result in problems unless your PDF source is fully text-based.
That is, don't even try to convert a, say, graphics-heavy tech book to the Mobi format.
dunno with heavy graphics but with normal graphics, pictures and so on i have no problem with it...and it scroll fast on text and relatively smooth on graphics...
but mene is correct, u cant read a pdf right away, it need to be "converted"...

Yup, with a normal, say, literature book the Mobi format is much better than PDF.
I for one am a fairly heavy PDF user and have always gone back to the bloated Adobe Reader 2.0. Just found this Foxit Reader for Windows Mobile which is still beta but was quite impressive. No installation, just a small executable that I copied to my Program Files directory and changed the PDF default viewer in the registry. It has a stupid nag screen and an Evaluation banner at the top of the that I'm sure will disappear when it's actually released. Looks like it has promise.....
I tried 'em all on my 8125, and settled on Foxit Reader. It only cost me $9.99 for a licensed version, and it works as well as any. It is very fast, takes up very little room and redraws seamlessly. The only drawback to it is that it has no find function. But tables of contents and links within documents are both fully functional. It's the best pdf viewer I've used in all my years of using PDAs and Handhelds.
This is the URL to the beta download, but if you contact the company they are very good about communicating with you.
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/foxitreader/rd_ppc.php
You can contact Sales here: [email protected]
I did have some trouble in getting the licensed version to keep my registration key from one session to the next, and had to get about 4 different "new" versions from them before they finally got me the fully licensed executable, but they didn't give up and their replies were timely.
Overall I'm very happy with it. I even open 6+Mb manuals with it and it is very fast in doing so, and just as fast in navigating within those large documents.
G'luck
Okay. The I downloaded the Fox Reader evaluation. Is there anyway to make it the default reader once you get the licensed version?
By the way - it's much quicker to use than the clearvue reader.
RepliGo PDF Mobilizer looks quite nice as well. The viewer for pocketpc is free, but you'll need to convert your PDFs to a custom format with their software, which is shareware (but nothing a quick search with Google can't fix).
The converted files are about half the size of the original PDF without losing layout/features etc.

Use a registry editor, navigatate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Look for pdffile. The Shell\Open\Command. Open the key and copy the text to the clipboard. (Mine says "\\Program Files\FoxitReader for WiM5.0.exe" %1" Close that and go down to Opendoc\Command and replace the text in the entry there.

Best Bible software for Windows Mobile

Hi there everyone,
I just got an HTC Touch and I would love to be able to get a modern English translation of Bible on it. Specifically I am thinking of the NIV or possibly the NKJV.
Top features I am looking for are:
1) Easy to read on screen. Should be readable for practical use including reading out load in groups. Perhaps something out there has configurable font sizes?
2) Easy to navigate to desired passage (book, chapter, verse)
3) Basic search functionality so I can enter words like “apart law testify” and get passages such as Romans 3:21. The search functionality should be comparable to that of www.biblegateway.com - currently one of my most used resources.
Optional features that might be nice but not critical might be:
1) Bookmarks: So I can prepare a lesson and have bookmarks for relevant passages. If the bookmarks could be color-coded, numbered of have labels attached this might make it easier for me to know which bookmark to use at which point during the lesson.
2) Translation independence. Perhaps the software could be independent of the translation used and additional translations (RSV, NIV, ASV, etc...) could be purchased and loaded into the same software.
3) Personal notes: If I could enter my own personal notes and have them automatically date/time stamped and stay with a passage that might be nice.
4) A Windows XP/Vista version: if the software had a desktop version that might be nice but not at all necessary.
I realize such software is most likely to be commercial (particularly because the NIV is copyrighted to Zondervan) but if I could get something with the top 3 features I would happily pay for it.
Best regards,
The Fish.
Try www.OliveTree.com
They have the NIV and a few Bibles for the HTC Touch...
thanks
Drew
Try e-sword.net as well. (pocket e-sword) It is a free program and I think works great. I have not used olivetree before though. How do they compare?

That's the best I've ever used and I've been using them for over 6 years since way back when I only had a palm. Their Reader is independent from the bibles so you can have multiple bibles. You can also install the reader to main memory and install bibles onto storage card (in my case I have some in storage and some in main memory since I'm still having the random data loss issue on my Touch.) They have a number of free translations and then you can also purchase other translations for a reasonable price. And the reader itself is free so you can pick it up along with some free bibles to try out for a while. I'm sure you'll like it
Top Features:
1. Configurable font sizes - Check.
2. Easy to navigate - check. It has configurable scrolling so you can scroll by page, verse, chapter, or auto scrolling (goes line by line continuously great for reading out loud).
3. Basic search - Check
Optional Features
1. Bookmarks - Check
2. Translation independence - check
3. Personal notes - check
4. Windows Version - Check (maybe). They have a desktop assistant that's supposed to have some of the features of the mobile reader. But I've never given it a try so I can't vouch for it. Desktop assistant is $7 - http://www.olivetree.com/download/desktop/screenshots.php

I personally prefer Laridian:

Hi everyone,
It looks like I accidentally started two threads on the same topic. Sorry about that.
So far I have received three recommendations:
Laridian
Olive Tree
Pocket e-sword
Are these the only real players with this kind of a product? If so it should be pretty easy for me to try all three I appreciate your help in this. So far I think I am tilting in the direction of Olive Tree.
I actually use Mobipocket and love it. Have used it since my PDA days and have the KJV for it.
I recomend Olivetree
I have used this product for over 5 years on a Palm and just recently switched to a Touch. It has everything I could think of and has all the major versions including the original languages. There are vast selection of resources available and base package is free. You pay only for copytrighted material.
Highly recomended!

If youre willing to spend some money I suggest Quick Verse mobile 2007. It is a truly multimedia bible that even my non-techy wife was impressed with.

I got a vogue in December, and I had installed and was using e-sword (which I have been using on my pc and several pda's for years) until I went from WM6 to WM6.1. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and it won't load when I try to open it. I have also installed Olive Tree and Laridian and I'm evaluating them. So, so far I can't tell you how to get it working properly, but depending on the version of WM you are running, it seems e-sword might have a conflict with 6.1
Pocket e-Sword
Running fine for me with wm6.1, program installed in memory, Bibles and commentaries on storage card.
Yes, I can confirm VZYGuy's experience. I installed e-Sword on a Sprint Vogue and it works flawlessly. I installed everything to the storage card. And Incidentally, I had already purchased a number of premium modules for my desktop PC version of e-sword and managed to convert those to a pocket version. Works great. The sad thing is, I recently purchase Laridian for the Pocket PC because a number of people had said that e-Sword was not so good on the Pocket version. After using Laridian for a few weeks, I decided to go ahead and load Pocket e-Sword. Honestly and IMHO, e-Sword is far more functional, feature rich, intuitive, and pleasing for what I would like out of a Bible program. Wish that I would have tried e-Sword first (thought I was going to have to re-purchase all the premium modules I had and that discouraged me as well).
Here are my phone parameters:
OS: WM 6.1a
Base ROM Ver: 3.02 with DHarvey's Vista Black (awesome)
Radio Ver: 3.42.30
Storage Card: PNY SD 4GB

x2 for OliveTree
I'm happy for those of you who who are still able to use E-Sword, however it still isn't working for me. I reinstalled E-Sword and one Bible module. No go. I have a US Cellular Vogue with WM 6.1, Rom 3.01.573.4, Radio 3.43.30, and an 8 gig Kingston card. I'm currently running M2D, which I had not installed when E-Sword stopped working. It worked until I installed WM 6.1 Just like activesync. At least being able to access GPS makes up for the loss of E-Sword and the hassle with activesync.
I found the answer in another thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1772770&postcount=103 The problem Pocket E-Sword has is with .Net CF 3.5 which I have on my Vogue. Since I can't remember which program I installed which needed this, I will get by with PocketBible and BibleReader until Rick gets the problem sorted out. Since 3.5 is going to be required by more programs, this incompatibility will hopefully be reconciled at some point.

Some questions regarding usability & convenience

Hello dear friends! I am new to this forum.
...Well not entirely new as i was reading up things here already...
1. Is there a way to change the font color of the home screen? (Some backgrounds are too bright)
2. Why is the wallpaper quality (home screen) worse compared to the quality when you open directly?
3. Is it possible to use the small qwerty layout when using GSen, so that you can write with both hands? It would surely speed up writing.
4. Is it possible to update things such as wheather info and the rss hub as soon as the device is connected to the internet via activesync? Both things need the user to start the update...
5. btw: Is there a better rss program avaiable?
6. Is there a way to write sms with outlook?
7. Is there a free dictionary avaiable on the internet (englisch<->german et vice versa)?
8. Is there a calculator which a) looks better b) the ability to plot / solve equations? (i already know "realcalculator")
9. Is there a program that is better than the explorer from microsoft? (I hate that there is no "back button"!)
10. Is there an snes emulator? (I have a snes and 40+ games. I just want to play some mario kart... )
Best regards
p.s. As a little gift because I am new here, I'll provide some of my self-made wallpapers. I hope you like them.
hi and welcome
and thanks
ehm, i can't answer all your questiosn since i only got my Diamond yesterday, but, i'll answer what i can.
4. the weather issue seems to want to connect off a data connection from the phone... so i don't know if theres a fix, but i have not seen one.
5. try spb insight
8. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411561 has a much better looking calculator imo
9. try installing SPB pocket plus to boost your default xplorer's capabilites. otherwise, try resco explorer (pay for it) or Total commander (free)
10. Pocket SNES is the one... Look for the TNT 19209 rom's Vanilla fun package in the Wizard Rom forum, or google for it.
where can i get SNES Roms from? if it isnt allowed to speak of them then im sorry in advance
Thanks

[Q] Bible app for nook (preferrably with offline support)

Has anyone found a good bible app for the nook touch? I tried the most popular bible app, https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sirma.mobile.bible.android, but it is awful for the nook. Page turning doesn't work, and scrolling hardly works at all (it sometimes scrolls the opposite way I tell it to). It has support for offline reading, but you have to have an SD card for the download, with no way of using internal memory.
For the offline bit, I've thought about symlinking the sdcard directory for the app to internal storage, but I haven't actually gotten around to trying it out. And with the reading issues I've had with it otherwise, I'd rather find a better app.
Please let me know if any have page turning abilities, and bonus if it can be used offline. Thanks!
It's not an app, but I downloaded the epub King James Version from Gutenberg. It's not the best in terms of search, goto, etc, but it's not bad and it's free, complete, and, as you say, off line.
The free ESV Bible app (by Crossway) works well with the hardkeys and downloads the text to your device so that it works offline. Obviously, it is less useful if you don't prefer the ESV translation. As the ESV is my preferred translation, it works out perfectly for me.
Try "And Bible" from Android Market. You can install additional languages for free and other books about theology. I use it on my Huawei u8500 but not yet on Nook Simple Touch, since I want to buy it next week.

Has very nice bibles... they are translated using modern English so they are easy to read and understand.

There is the YouVersion Bible app, and it has practicability every translation and version that there is. It Works with the NST very nicely. There is NLT, NIV, KJV, NKJV, CSB, MET and so many others.

I ended up trying this one out, and I love it!
One issue with it though: it never seems to do a full page refresh. So after a while, the screen accumulates a lot of artifacts.
I feel the best bible app ever would be The New Living Word (Nlt) as it is derived originally from the dead sea scrolls and translated from that to modern English and NOT from the KJV. I have used many versions and this one from Tyndale is quite amazing. If your using android try olivetree bible reader and download the Nlt version.

Unfortunately this is factually incorrect.
The NLT (New Living Translation) is closer to a dynamic paraphrase than a strict translation and while I often recommend it as a very good supplementary version I would recommend against relying on it as a standalone or primary version.
"it is derived originally from the dead sea scrolls and translated from that to modern English"
Not only is this claim not true of the NLT version, it is not true of any version. Beyond that, it is not possible to be true for any version.
This is because the Dead Sea scrolls are not actually complete scrolls but fragments of scrolls. They contain only fragments of most of the Old Testament books along with other writings. Also, notably, the book of Esther is not found among the DSS fragments.
(I say this from first hand study as I own and have studied several of the various available versions of the DSS as part of my studies) Since not even the Old Testament is complete in the DSS fragments, it is impossible to have a modern bible based on the DSS. This is skipping the fact that the DSS does not contain ANY of the New Testament at all.
Also, since the DSS were discovered in the 1940's, every single modern English translation team since that time(NIV 1984 and 2011 versions, ESV 2004, 2007, 2011 versions, NASB 1995, etc) has been aware of, and has consulted the available DSS manuscripts where possible along with the Masoretic texts, the LXX, and the various Targums as they continually update their texts. The NLT is by no means unique in this at all.
I would recommend a more literal translation as a good primary or base translation (I strongly recommend the ESV or NASB).
You version is great! It is OK for me on the nook st, but not great (flashing page turns).
It DOES offer offline caching for many translations. It used to not do so (at least for free), but now it does.
I love the app, so it is good enough for me with the flaws.
Oh! I have the same issue here. The page doesn't update once you scroll it. It cannot change page for swapping chapters, books, even versions of bible.
I love youversion bible so much. But I cannot find a solution to this problem.
I wonder if this problem only happens on Firmware 1.1
Anybody share their experience?
I used SalsichaNooter 0.4 to root.
I also email a report to youversion's contact, hope that they can help.
I really love youversion and don't wanna change.
I found that this is not a problem of this particular app.
I tried with some other apps.
For apps that have the Formatted Text Area, after scrolling, the application is not able to change it. Anybody here have the solution?
I am using Firmware 1.1 with SalsichaNooter 0.4 rooted
thanks
==================
PS: Seems that the problem is about the Webkit? okay.. just a guess.....
The New World Translation is also available in epub format: http://jw.org/index.html?option=QrYQCsVrGlVlYR
The table of contents is formatted pretty nicely, with Bible Books on the first page, linking to a full chapter/verse list that then links to the exact verse, so if you're trying to get to an exact verse, it's usually just a few "clicks"
And if you can't remember exactly what you're looking for, there's also an alphabetical index of key words/phrases in the back.
And should you need it for any reason: Finnish, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Sesotho, Spanish, Swedish, and Zulu versions are also available in epub.
Guys, I think holy-wars on what translation is truer are not for this forum.
And back to theme: why to look for application for ebook reader, if You can just find ebook itself.

And back to theme: why to look for application for ebook reader, if You can just find ebook itself.

Well, it's because navigating the book is much more part of the reading than with more casual reading. Also, swapping translations is often part of bible reading and normal document reading software does not make this easy.
I didn't see anyone mention Calibre Bible, which I use extensively. Load the app, then let it load your favorite translation(s) for use offline.
...Well, I can't find a link to it. Maybe it died. Free while it lasted!

I found that this is not a problem of this particular app.
I tried with some other apps.
For apps that have the Formatted Text Area, after scrolling, the application is not able to change it. Anybody here have the solution?
I am using Firmware 1.1 with SalsichaNooter 0.4 rooted
thanks

PS: Seems that the problem is about the Webkit? okay.. just a guess.....

I've run into this problem too. Every bible app I've tried suffers from this, plus some others.
It will seem to work OK, but if you search of change chapters, then the screen doesn't update, but the app behaves as if its working.
Most annoying as this kind of ruins its use.
I'm on v1.2.1 rooted with NookManager running the v176 kernel.
UPDATE:
The problem seems to only occur once you scroll in a text area. There after its contents are not updated.
I found that YouVersion 2.4.1 works very well and even supports using the physical page turn buttons. Here is a link to the apk ... Download Bible for Android. Make sure you download V2.4.1 (scroll down to the bottom). It has offline support and physical button support.
I was even able to change the font used by linking the DriodSerif fonts to Caecilia fonts.

Nice one! That version seems to work without any problems and as a plus you can download almost all the versions for offline use for free!
I use Olive Tree's Bible study app. However, the newest version did not work for me on my NST Glowlight.
So, I found older versions here:
olivetree.com/m/platform_android_20.php
I use Bible+ 5.3.0. Download directly from:
olivetree.com/download/android/5.3.0/Bible+.apk
(Sorry I am not yet permitted to post outside links)
They have some free Bibles and some (like NIV, NRSV, etc.) that cost a few bucks. They have been around a long time, so if you, like me, have been using this app for ten years or more (started with it on my Palm Zire), you can use the Bibles you purchased long ago.

and if i wanna reinstall some appz like (Market , Youtube and nook basic browser) ..... do u have any idea
also i wanna add Arabic keyboard to my nook .... if u know method or how develop it , i will appreciate it , cuz i downloaded many keyboards but didnt detect from nook sys
thx any way Renate for ur great support and contribution
I'm not sure about the longevity of the eInk Pearl display.
The manufacturer bandies about a figure of 50,000 hours.
That would be 25 years of 9 to 5 office use.
50,000 hour MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) is a standard value for a reliable product.
I think that they just pulled that figure out of the air.
I don't think that the eInk display "wears out" in any particular fashion.
I've never been a big fan of all those "no-refresh" apps.
I just don't think tinkering outside of an application is the best way to attack.
Three of my applications use direct control of the EpdController internally.
I'm sure that there has to be an Arabic keyboard out there.
Is the problem that they use too high a version of Android?
Renate , i have good news about add Arabic keyboard to nook
ok .... first u must have Arabic keyboard apk and paste them in /system/app and then fo to ur nook color tools and choose ur key board and offcurse install Arabic support for browser then try to type something in ur browser (it wont define as a language) then hit search ....and it will appear and viewed in ur search results , i know it's a partially solution but it works for me
i will take print screen and post it in original thread
Keyboards don't have to be installed in /system/app, a regular install is fine.
Yes you do have to enabled it as a keyboard using Tools or configure it in
settings.db, secure, enabled_input_methods.
