Hey guys,
I got myself a MOFRED case from Amazon, which contains two magnets, one on the top side near the power bottom ( keeps the case shut) and the other in the usual place ( smart cover functionality). So I was wondering will the magnets have any long term adverse effects?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
No, magnets are only bad for crt monitors and hard disk drives. Neither of which the nexus 7 has.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
Cheers mate.... better safe than sorry
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
If there was any problem, they wouldn't have even had smart cover functionality using magnets.
I heard somewhere that the NFC chip could be damaged by magnets?
Also I thought I heard magnets were bad for anything that stored data (HDD platters, VCR tapes, Floppy discs), and wouldn't this mean that chips could also be harmed by magnets?

There are a few things, like gyroscopes, that can be harmed by very strong magnets. Your examples are all magnetic media which is, by its nature, affected by strong magnets. Other data storage technologies such as flash memory are not as susceptible to magnetic fields.
Regardless, the type of magnets used in these cases are typically weak enough not to cause problems.
You shouldn't have any problems with magnets as long as they aren't those super strong rare earth magnets. I wouldn't put those next to/on any device.
I don't think they are rare earth magnets, but at the end of the day how do I know : )

If you stick it to a piece of metal how hard is it to pull off?
Hmmmm, strong enough for one of them cheap wheel lighters to stay attached even when holding upside down.....

As long as it's not too hard to pull off, I doubt it's a rare earth magnet.
The magnets in that case are definitely safe. Nothing to worry about.
The magnets im going to be using to mount a padholdr to my dash on the other hand.. Well. We'll all find out if they do any damage in a couple days.
Thanks for all the replies,

What kinda magnets are you using? I would love to see the finished product.... as I was looking for ideas on mounting mine

I have a reasonably strong feeling that case magnets screw up the magnetometer.
Compass applications suck - more than usual. Usual calibration tricks don't help.
Could be, although that was the first thing I checked and mine seems fine, however as I said: "could be" as I ve only had the case for one day.....and who knows what happens in the long run..... I guess we ll find out one way or the other....

I think the compass is about the only thing that could be borked. And I never use a compass app. The compass function will still work via GPS so. Meh..
I'm going to start getting parts tomorrow and I'll be posting pictures of the car mount progress as I go along.
I have a stack of neodymium magnets on the way and they'll be mounted directly to the padholdr which will then stick to the dash. But I'll be experimenting with different sizes so its not overkill.

You're going to use neodymium magnets on your Nexus 7? Ok, lol. Hopefully nothing gets messed up.
No..I'm going to use them on a padholdr.
http://padholdr.com/ipad-and-tablet-holders/
It will be somewhat close proximity..yes.
And I've got lots of sizes. So the stronger ones will probably go behind the dash, and the weaker ones to the padholdr. I really don't think its an issue, but I will report back for sure.
After using for over a week happy to report absolutely no problems....
In the Samsung warranty leaflet that came with my galaxy note it said not to use a case with a magnet or have a magnet anywhere near the gnote.... Some people who had cases with a magnet had "dead zones" on their screen. People also reported issues with the compass. When I bought a case for the N7 that had a magnet I thought the same thing, that the magnet would hurt the N7. I do think the gnote is different in terms of magnets though due to the s pen technology. I'm watching for any dead zones though on the N7.... Nothing after a month.

The silicone skins stretch out over time, are hard to get out of your pocket, but keep the phone from sliding around on slick surfaces like a car's dash.
The "flexible" (soft/hard silicone) case that VZW makes is what I have used. Feels nice, like the black/red look.

Right now I haven't had a case on it, due to needing to pull the battery (for various ROM flashing), and it doesn't fit with the case in my dock at work. Taking the VZW case off can be a pain to do if it's done a lot, so right now I'm case-less.
otterbox commuter case
Black silicone case from vw. Keeps safe from drops, evens out back so cam lens is protected and keeps screen protected when laying face down.
No case. I kept trying to get use to it and couldn't. I've given up and just resolve to being extremely careful.
I used to use a hard clear case, but then a month ago I took it off and haven't looked back xD Haha, the most common question I get about my phone is: "Didn't you used to have a case?"

I have the silicon vzw case but always seem to be taking it out of the case when I'm stationary (sitting down). I just love the feel of it without the case but it PAYS TO KEEP IT ON. I've dropped it a few times, with the case on (thank jeebus), and it just bounces around with little to no case damage. One time it actually bounced back up about two feet and I caught it so I'm inbetween I guess

Same here, I had an Invisible Shield, but it got all dented/gashed up thanks to my keys. (Yes I keep my Dinc with my keys ) And I had a hard case from day one but it doesn't stay on anymore because of how many times I had to take it off.
I also got a new 64GB iPod touch for christmas and got a cheap case that partially blocked the audio jack, so I never used the case. Without a screen protector, the glass holds up pretty well. As for the chrome back, well, thats a different story
I have an otterbox defender, seidio innocase active, sedio innocase surface and one of the snap on cases from VZW... but they sit nicely in my desk. I drop the phone all the time and don't have a single scratch on the screen, a few small nicks on the outside. It is too sexy to keep in a case.
I actually just took the case off my phone today and it's soo much smaller and the vibration feels odd.. I prefer the case over no case its just nicer feel for me.

I got to have a case for my phone. To think of all the times its saved my Dinc.
I drop it getting out the car a bunch. I got the hard silicone case from Verizon.
Ok I had the screen problems now for 6-8months. Cant be without my phone as most users. I mod a lot and always need to battery pull. Which as caused the problem of the 1cm dead strip which affects game play and letters WESZ on the touch keyboard.
My solution is not ideal but it works. Am not technical minded at all.
1) you need a strip of thin metal.

This is what I used. A old hard speaker cover I think this was
2) I cut it into a strip of around 0.5mm wide 1cm long
3) remove battery and place right hand side of fingerprint scanner
4) replace battery (might be a tight fit)
5) replace back cover
6) bend the strip over
Works for me screen perfect now. I can pull battery. Replace the strip. Replace the battery. Boot and screen is prefect again.
Hope this help some of you guys.
Maybe someone can find a more ideal way?

I have the same problem but this doesn't work for me.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
That works!!!!!!!!i just slightly pull the fingerprint sensor up! the dead area comes back to work!!!!!!!!amazing!!!!!
i think the problem lies in the digitizer bus connector!
I thought you were going to post something like take out your digitizer and put glue stick on it all lmao! just kidding.
So this works... let's see...
EDIT (WORKS!):
So odd... this works better than punch the phone, haha. Nah it just worked fine =), It's a workaround till my digitizer arrives, also I use the Fingerprint so this is a problem either ways lol... but
Thank you and God bless you.
EDIT 2 lol:
Did you ever try buying a new digitizer, or do you think it's some other problem? because I bought a digitizer already and it is on it's way to me.
Ill try , thanks !!!

I take battery out insert paperclip replace battery then bend paperclip over the scanner.
Battery keeps it in place,
Mine is 1mm into the scanner on the right.
Once you got it into place and stuck there your screen will be fine.

1. It's a scratch resistant, not drop proof.
2. Laws of physics. The center of gravity is focused on the front for these phones since they're so light and thin. Yes it's more likely to fall on it's front like a bowling ball on a stick thrown up.
3. Counter balance this with a case in the back.
4. Sucks to be you.
5. Use the search button next time.

gorilla glass is meant to be excellent against scratches, not breaking. That it cracked is not one of its features.

Look on eBay then
If you want something that is fall resistant buy a Nokia Lumia when having one of those things you should worry about your feet that your phone. Of course Samsung S3 is a delicate creature that has to be tendered with great care. There many fall resistant cases but to be honest the best protection is safety. I don't see how anyone would like to have a bulk that is twice the normal phone. A normal barely there casemate and a screen protector would do well for everyday usage. Thought there was another from case mate again that included a hell lot of protection. It had two parts, one rubber and the other a normal tough case but really that made the phone look like a satellite phone.
Alright sorry I thought it was break proof according to the video it looked like it. Also, it's not a big deal I still have 14 days to get warranty it was my fault and I can admit it, no need to be so rude about how it's my fault.
As for videos, I don't read much into them because those are mostly staged and does not reflect what really happens.
I remember watching a Gorilla Glass 2 video on youtube showing no scratches on one of the new Sony phones; I just laughed because they person was scratching with razor blades and hitting with a hammer; showing no damage. The only problem with that is the camera does not pick up the micro scratches which one can see with the eye (which the user shows it with no scratches in the video). Eventually the video poster did crack the glass after repeatedly hitting with a hammer.
There was also another video of the same phone being dropped in a big puddle of water and also it being ran over with a jeep...! Perfectly intact ha ha!
I have the flip cover and I drop my phone about 4 feet got a little scratch on the back 'maybe I'm lucky? but I think it was my case?

if it isn't very much, like how I use my tablet, i wouldn't worry about it.
and if you plan on using a case, it probably wont matter at all once it is in there.
That's what I was thinking.
If it is in a case, who cares.
But I know it it's there....mocking me...

i had a new mini van where the side door made a slight pop noise when it completely shut . I Thought it works fine no big deal. A few weeks later i parked on a heal facing down. I Opened the door to put bags in behind drivers seat. The jar caused what ever was causing the pop to come loose and the door nearly cut me in half.. Ok it moved toward me swiftly.. Took van to dealer . It was a defective latch. Maybe something was not assembled right .So to ask a question about my tablet makes a noise is logical to wonder about..
yes my mini van was 34 grand .. but the amount of money should not matter . you should get what you pay for. a working with no flaws device.. I see this over and over saying its only 200.00 what do you expect.. You expect if they cant make it right for 200.00 they should make it right and charge more.. NO OFFENCE ANYONE but we do not live in a 3rd world country and expect higher standards ..
Just my two cents... If your tablet bothers you with noises send it back by all means..

It's obvious that these hardware defects are mentioned right in the Nexus 7's product description as features. That means you should accept them, and continue using your device, because after all, it's clearly stated the device comes with such defects...
In all seriousness though, if your device has any imperfection, you have the choice to try again. However, since defects are random, you can end up with a better, worse, or no-change tablet. Some retailers are better at handling device returns than others however, but that's something that should be looked into prior to buying from that store.
These threads are amazing. Its no wonder the entire country is on Prozac. My god its nice being normal!

The back is made of plastic, it flexes ever so slightly. By pressing the back he is distorting the original shape & the creak is due to the back moving against the clips that hold the back in place, that is all. It is not a defect, it is natural for one object flexing against one that has no give to cause a small amount of noise.
If I buy a leather chair & park my fat arse on it & the leather makes a noise against the seat base is it defective? No!

Thanks for the reply
I keep my S4 in a pouch case too but it's still started to accumulate some dirt in the gap between the bezel and the screen. Maybe it's just my OCD for things like this that's making me notice it but it's annoying me lol. I've thought about using a really fine needle to push the dirt out but the idea of putting a sharp needle anywhere near my precious S4 gives me cold sweats! (OK I'm exaggerating slightly lol)

Nahh.. a needle is bigger than a thin paper and I wouldn't use it.
With the S2 I used a thin paper and with this one (S4) I didn't notice the need yet but suppose a thin paper should do when the time arrives.
I tried with a needle on my S4, was too thick and couldn't get into it properly but did clear out a little bit of dirt
Just use the paper which is soft but hard to clean the dirty.
Actually I realized after bought the S4 that to have a gap in the front is really bad design.
htc one x and nokia phone doesn't have it either. specification wise, samsung seems to be ahead but design wise, they have a long way to catch up.

What about the tip of a dental stick ... better than a steel needle!

My advice is wooden toothpick- you can break it in the middle and get really thin edges that will do the trick.
And the wood will not damage your phone

I use a thin scotch tape so the dust will stick to it as i carefully press the dusty gap with something pointy like a needle or a toothpick

I have this same problem too. There was a gap between the screen and the bezel on my S4, near the headphone jack. I sent it into Samsung and they told me that someone had performed an unauthorized replacement of the screen and that it voided the warranty. They said that according to the IMEI given, the phone was a black S4 belonging to telus - not the Fido white s4 that I thought I had. And they also said that the USB connector was defective (which I find hard to believe since I've been using it with Samsung chargers for 6 months now). I had no idea because it was bought used and there is no way of checking for it either (you can only check whether the phone is blacklisted or not). So not only did Samsung void my warranty but when I received the phone back, the gap was noticeably worse! It was just a minor cosmetic flaw before and now its a fullblown gap all along the top and i can bend the screen at the top. Samsung made it worse! I feel like I've been ripped off twice now; this time by Samsung. Never buying another Samsung device again.
Anyway, did anyone find a solution to this problem without turning it in for warranty? How much would it cost to fix this gap?
