Samsung Galaxy S4 Bezel Gap Dirt - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've started to notice that dirt/dust is gathering in the gap between the bezel and the screen on my i9505. I've tried to blow the dirt out, tried to push it out with paper etc but can't seem to shift it. Does anybody else have this issue and have you been able to clear it? Thanks

I keep my phone is case, so i don;t have this issues, but on old s1/s2 i used to clean that gap with a small needle.

Thanks for the reply
I keep my S4 in a pouch case too but it's still started to accumulate some dirt in the gap between the bezel and the screen. Maybe it's just my OCD for things like this that's making me notice it but it's annoying me lol. I've thought about using a really fine needle to push the dirt out but the idea of putting a sharp needle anywhere near my precious S4 gives me cold sweats! (OK I'm exaggerating slightly lol)

Nahh.. a needle is bigger than a thin paper and I wouldn't use it.
With the S2 I used a thin paper and with this one (S4) I didn't notice the need yet but suppose a thin paper should do when the time arrives.

I tried with a needle on my S4, was too thick and couldn't get into it properly but did clear out a little bit of dirt

Just use the paper which is soft but hard to clean the dirty.
Actually I realized after bought the S4 that to have a gap in the front is really bad design.
htc one x and nokia phone doesn't have it either. specification wise, samsung seems to be ahead but design wise, they have a long way to catch up.

My advice is wooden toothpick- you can break it in the middle and get really thin edges that will do the trick.
And the wood will not damage your phone

I use a thin scotch tape so the dust will stick to it as i carefully press the dusty gap with something pointy like a needle or a toothpick

I have this same problem too. There was a gap between the screen and the bezel on my S4, near the headphone jack. I sent it into Samsung and they told me that someone had performed an unauthorized replacement of the screen and that it voided the warranty. They said that according to the IMEI given, the phone was a black S4 belonging to telus - not the Fido white s4 that I thought I had. And they also said that the USB connector was defective (which I find hard to believe since I've been using it with Samsung chargers for 6 months now). I had no idea because it was bought used and there is no way of checking for it either (you can only check whether the phone is blacklisted or not). So not only did Samsung void my warranty but when I received the phone back, the gap was noticeably worse! It was just a minor cosmetic flaw before and now its a fullblown gap all along the top and i can bend the screen at the top. Samsung made it worse! I feel like I've been ripped off twice now; this time by Samsung. Never buying another Samsung device again.
Anyway, did anyone find a solution to this problem without turning it in for warranty? How much would it cost to fix this gap?

Are you sure it's not the battery cover? The trim is really solid, it's usually the battery cover from what I've gathered.
That could be possible, its hard to tell what is exactly moving when i push on the trim and battery cover on rocker side but everything is air tight on the power button side

Mines solid as a rock.
I wish they made a clear protector to go just around this trim in addition to the screen and back. When you drop a phone it's usually the corners that eat the concrete.
I have the problem you describe. I verified it wasn't the barry cover because I was able to reproduce it with the cover off. You think they'll let us swap for this issue?

Mine HAD this, I took a phillips and tighten the screws on the back (remove battery cover of course) and now its SOLID!
NOTE: FIRST loosen the screws a bit THAN tighten them up again.
That does seem to noticably reduce the problem. Thanks dude.

I was about to take mine back because of this! Than I did what I mentioned and all solid. Glad I could help.
Anyone know where I can buy a screwdriver that fits?
I had this issue on two vibrants, and the third is nice and solid. They let me exchange both without any questions.
As others have said, the Vibrant has seven screws under the battery case that hold the bezel trimmed front to the case. (Compared to other phones I have disassembled I LOVE this construction. Many phones are simply snapped together. Screws, IMHO, exhibit quality construction).
See the pic for the screws .
You need a really small Phillips cross-head screwdriver to tighten the screws. If you don't have a "jeweler's sized" set, you can get them at most stores. Or you can get an eyeglass screwdriver set. Make sure it has a Phillips head screwdriver bit included.
Do not over tighten the screws as you might crack the plastic or strip the threads.

Go to any Radio Shack, hardware, auto supply, Target, Sears or Wal-Mart and get a set of screwdrivers they call:
Precision
Jeweler's
Mini
Eye glass repair kit (albeit, these may be too small).
A set cost less than $5.
I hate loose trim. Love it tight.

[DEFECT] Gap between glass and casing. Whose got it?

Does your SGS3 have a gap down the left hand side of the screen?
Is dust building up in it?
If so, post a photo, if you can
I am returning my first SGS3 today as there is a gap between the glass and the casing.
Dust is building up in it and it looks rather unsightly.
I was just wondering if it's just me or not.
Can you see the line of dust down the left side of the screen?

I just ran my nail along the gap and managed to dig out the few flakes of dust in there, so a toothbrush should work fine.
afaik all the samsung mobiles i have used had micro gaps, its the way it is designed. cant notice the gap in s3 as it is white, but it will have it surely.
btw the micro gap is required to absorb the shocks. else all the shock will reach out the screen easily.
The problem I have is that on the left side the gap is quite substantial. Where as there is no gap at all on the right side.
It's like the whole glass part it too far over to the right.
I have seen another blue S3 at Phone 4u and there it an equal gap on either side; so I know for sure there is a problem with this batch at the 3 store.
My white one has no such gap. At least nothing I can discern anyway...

I thought there was one, it is moving slightly. But guess that's good, firmness bad for drops.
It is also an optical illusion! Depending on the lighting angle. Does it look like a big gap on the left? Flip the phone upside down, the gap is still on the left it doesn't flip. Not worried now after noticing it, you had me for 20sec.

It`s a glass phone! It will scratch no matter how you try to protect it! Eventually every phone will scratch!
I don't use the OEM bumper but after a few days inside a generic tpu case, I also noticed scratching on the upper part of the chrome bezel. Inevitable in suppose, with dust able to get under the lip of the case and the chrome being so soft and vulnerable to damage.
I've been using mine since 18/12. Used a tpu case for 1st 10 days, and the original plastic protectors to date. In my pocket, on table, in car = no scratches to speak of.

The silver bezel will scratch even with the utmost protection, unfortunately, these things scratch, you might want to look into screen protectors for the front and back and also use the bumper, that's what i have done and it's keeping my N4 pretty scratch free!

My apologies for not replying sooner. I've been busy with work and other things, and just plain forgot to post these! Oops.
Any how, I don't want to appear like a whiny baby who's blindly bashing the phone. I realize that chrome *anything* scratches readily. Be it metal, plastic, or whatever material you like. It's why I generally don't like chrome on anything I own.
But since you asked, here are some brutally horrible pictures I took of some dust underneath the lip of my case, and the marks it leaves behind. It's pretty minimal, but the phone is only a few weeks old, so I'm sure it'll get worse over time. I'm not worried however, because this phone will always have a case on it. And a screen protector, which I realize I applied too low. I wanted to make sure it cleared the lip of the case and wouldn't get peeled up.
Excuse the quality. I took them with my Gnex and a flashlight while laying in bed, so they're out of focus and the white balance is off.

As an addendum to my post, I'm sure regular daily cleaning of the inside of the case and exterior of the phone will minimize or eliminate this, but I'm kind of a wash and wear kinda guy. My stuff gets used and abused so I expect this sort of thing to happen eventually.
I won't mention what the Otterbox Defender did to the plastic bezel of my poor Gnex.
Wow! That's truly awful.
I feel your pain, esp as I keep mine in my pocket etc with no case for these last 2 weeks, just front and rear protectors that came with it. I have no scratches or marking at all. However, I've always made a point of keeping my phone in a different pocket to keys, coins etc.

I thought about maybe using some super fine polishing compound but you should be careful to not get anything on the display...
My bezel has some minor (really minor) stratches which can only be seen directly under a lamp, so everything is perfect for me (no bumper, protectors or anything, naked phone for 1 month).
But out of curiosity does anyone know if the chromebezel can be "easily" replaced? From teardown pictures I'd say it looks like it is not really possible or worth the hassle... I guess the whole frame has to be replaced which means new display or atleast display change with heating and all that fun stuff...
No matter what u do u will scratch the chrome bezel. Ive had a case on mine since day one an mine has minor scratches from dust. This is why i hate chrome on cellphones. U just have to live with it

CRACK in Silver Bezel

This is the THIRD time this has happened to me with Sammy phones.
The silver bezel right above the spen has a small crack. This phone hasnt been dropped and remains in a case since day 1.
This random crack also happened to my Note 2 and my Galaxy S3.
I dont want an all aluminum phone (i prefer removable batteries and micro sd), but they need to do something about the bezels. Theres no reason they should get random hairline cracks.

Look, I am on your side. However, the first thing they are going to say is that you dropped it!!!
IMO, all the manufacturers are going to go that route in claiming that it was dropped..
Best way to deal with that, is to have the insurance and pay the deductible and get another phone.
Samsung isi changing the screen-bezel parts in case of a crack that was not caused by a drop or hit. I just replaced the screen-bezel parts because I had a small manufacture defect under the screen near the Home button. I had that defect since I bought the phone.
Is there anywhere you can buy a replacement bezel? I have the same crack but dropped it so can be sure how it happened.

From what I noticed on Friday when I got my phone from service, they replaced the screen together with the chrome bezel. So I guess it's one piece. Probably you can unglue the screen from the bezel, but it's too risky and hard.

Indeed the screen and bezel are bonded together. I guess one could use a heat gun to melt the glue but it would be a difficult operation prone to damaging the screen.
The bezel is the weakest aspect of this phone. It is not silver all the way through it, so if gets scratched it will show black underneath. The stitching from the s-view cover is rough enough to micro scratch the bezel. It really is a poor quality bit of the phone. What Samsung should have done is put an ultra-thin bezel around the screen which then gets covered by a removable silver one that can easily be bought and replaced whenever you want.
i also have the crack above the spen.
Me tooo . Pretty disappointing for such an expensive phone considering its been with the s-view cover from day one and never been dropped.

[Mod] Made speaker grills black

So................
Here is the story:
I dented the back of my HTC One and literally could not believe it. I had only had it for a week and im so careful with my phones.
So I tired a few ways to remove the dent without taking the phone apart. Like heating the dent up and then putting something cold on it. This helped a little bit however I could still see this dent starring at me. So I took drastic measures.
I tried to take the phone apart. This didn't work to well and I ended up scratching up the speaker grills in the process.
So now my beautiful new One has a dent in the back and scratches on the grills on the front. I felt like crying.
I decided to take the hard decision to try and cover these scratches up and decided to spray paint the grills matte black.
This is how it turned out:

What's the material type you used? Black faux leather?
no offense. but the phone is beautiful already. that's pretty ugly :crying: and you painted over the sensor? I would have left the scratches lol. or buffed them out

Is the proximity/light sensor working properly? It seems to have been covered by the paint!

Does anyone make clear protectors for that area?
It looks like that area is soft and is prone to scratches so a clear protector on that area sounds like a good idea
Especially if you are like me and have a a screen protector and also in a case it leaves those areas exposed

Thanks for posting the pics! I also did this last night - partially because I messed up one of the grille holes while trying to clear them out, and partially because I thought it looked interesting. I went with a matte paint too from Tamiya (model paint). I like the matte texture to prevent smudges and it's working great for that (especially the top one when I put it up to my ear!). Cut a couple of pieces of masking tape to cover the sensor window and camera lens so everything works fine. I only put a couple of coats on so that the grilles still look flat. Turned out pretty decent I think
