Case or no case? - Droid Incredible General

What do you all prefer?

The silicone skins stretch out over time, are hard to get out of your pocket, but keep the phone from sliding around on slick surfaces like a car's dash.
The "flexible" (soft/hard silicone) case that VZW makes is what I have used. Feels nice, like the black/red look.

Right now I haven't had a case on it, due to needing to pull the battery (for various ROM flashing), and it doesn't fit with the case in my dock at work. Taking the VZW case off can be a pain to do if it's done a lot, so right now I'm case-less.

otterbox commuter case

Black silicone case from vw. Keeps safe from drops, evens out back so cam lens is protected and keeps screen protected when laying face down.

No case. I kept trying to get use to it and couldn't. I've given up and just resolve to being extremely careful.

I used to use a hard clear case, but then a month ago I took it off and haven't looked back xD Haha, the most common question I get about my phone is: "Didn't you used to have a case?"

I got that too when mine came off...I didn't know people paid that much attention, but since my phone is always out, maybe it wasn't that hard after all?

I have 2 of those cases, red n black, they work great. I use my cases for work as I'm outside all the time...i take it off almost immediately after work though

I have the silicon vzw case but always seem to be taking it out of the case when I'm stationary (sitting down). I just love the feel of it without the case but it PAYS TO KEEP IT ON. I've dropped it a few times, with the case on (thank jeebus), and it just bounces around with little to no case damage. One time it actually bounced back up about two feet and I caught it so I'm inbetween I guess

Same here, I had an Invisible Shield, but it got all dented/gashed up thanks to my keys. (Yes I keep my Dinc with my keys ) And I had a hard case from day one but it doesn't stay on anymore because of how many times I had to take it off.
I also got a new 64GB iPod touch for christmas and got a cheap case that partially blocked the audio jack, so I never used the case. Without a screen protector, the glass holds up pretty well. As for the chrome back, well, thats a different story

I have an otterbox defender, seidio innocase active, sedio innocase surface and one of the snap on cases from VZW... but they sit nicely in my desk. I drop the phone all the time and don't have a single scratch on the screen, a few small nicks on the outside. It is too sexy to keep in a case.

I actually just took the case off my phone today and it's soo much smaller and the vibration feels odd.. I prefer the case over no case its just nicer feel for me.

I got to have a case for my phone. To think of all the times its saved my Dinc.
I drop it getting out the car a bunch. I got the hard silicone case from Verizon.

battery cover peeling off [updated with pics]

well my battery cover started peeling off. anyone else having this sort of issue? im about to scrape everything off n give it the shiny look.
Can't say. Mines just as if I took it out the box and I've had mine since the day of release. I use a clear smoke case tnough so that could be why. Dropped it about 3 times. No damage or scuffs whatsoever. Nor wear n tear.

Describe how it's peeling off...the back of the vision is aluminium..it should not peel off
Sent from my HTC Vision
I have the same issue, its actually the thin layer of clear coating that sits on the aluminum. I dont see it as a big deal since underneath the clear coat is aluminum, it just doesnt look as good while it hasnt all peeled away.

Do you put change in your pocket with your phone or keys? Seems liek something is really scratching at that finish.
I might expect it to get smoother over time, but that looks like something hard has been scratching it.
Mine started peeling like that, too. I always keep it in a pocket by itself. I "fixed" it by polishing off all the clear coat with a scotch brite pad, moving up and down only to leave the nice brushed look intact.

Mine is also in great condition no signs of that tearing, my hinge isnt perfect but not near as bad as some of those videos i saw
Wow that looks pretty bad considering the phone is only a couple of months old. This really makes me appreciate the fact that I put mine in a gel skin case right when I first bought it.
I've seen a coworker's do the same thing. I've had mine in one of those cheap $3 cases since I got it and my SkinIt skin gets here on Monday, so I'm not too worried about it.
Like most on this thread, my coworker decided to try to scrape the rest off, cause he thinks it looks better without the covering than it did with.
I just wish they'd made the phone black instead of grey (my skinit is black, though. )
Anyone have a picture of back with the coating scraped off?
Search on ebay, you can get a replacement one for around $20

I put an Invisible Shield on the backplate of my Galaxy S i9000 for the same reason. Seems like it (or any of the similar products) are the best path to go.
I haven't done this on my Nexus S yet.
I'm was considering just buying a new backplate when it gets so beat up that I don't like the look any more.
Mine's not scratched at all that I notice after 5-6 weeks I've had it.
Sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. I want to know how bad the back cover scratches, not which case I need to buy (because if I'm going to buy a case, it's going to be the "S" curved one).
@above: thanks! Can you tell me how you carry around your phone? In your pocket? With other stuff? And where do you put it down if you don't use it? On a place where it could be scratched?
No scratches ...
Not using any case either
My phone is naked and I put it in a soft leather / fabric pouch ...
And I put it in my jeans pocket, together with keys and coins
Done this for months with my HTC Desire and it is still shinny as new!
i carry it in my horizontal belt leather case that was for my old SGS I9000
perfect fit
I already mentioned above no scratches on mine yet.
I carry it naked, in my pocket. My headphones are alway in my pocket (so there's a naked jack in there usually), and I frequently carry a second phone in the same pocket (an iPhone 4 or an i9000).
I've added a poll an edited the first post.
No scratches on mine, but that's because I keep mine in a Nexus One pouch.

I'm exactly like this, except from the keys and coins.
I don't have any scratches (I'm very pedantic with that matter) and I don't use any case (makes the phone looks ridiculous).
I have a couple little scratches... but if you pay close attention to the phone, it has a few black web scratches over a few areas. Almost reminds me of black paint on cars. My Samsung tv is made out of the same plastic and it has the web scratches.

I have couple on the back and where the usb port is. I tend to miss sometimes when it's dark and I'm tired, didn't really expect it to be scratched there. Oh well, I'll be keeping this phone for a while anyways. Also use a case, but I don't think it's doing a very good job protecting it from scratches.

The only thing I can imagine is that you must have dropped it on a pillow. The forum is full of posts on shattered Aria digitizer screens from drops of as little as 18". I have 2 Aria's, one working and a second for backup, and the backup is waiting now for another digitizer to arrive.
Other than that and no Flash, it's a great phone.

I've dropped mine several times on hard surfaces including asphault and the only damage it has is a little nick in the corner of the back cover. I've even dropped it in water, fully emersed and it never even got wet inside except some moisture under the screen that dried up. This little guy is going on 9 months old now Ans never had a single issue. Its a sturdy and very reliable little phone IMO.

It just works well
Coming from a HTC Fuze, I'm glad I did not give up on HTC. The Aria makes up for all of the glitches and freezes I experienced with the Fuze. My Aria simply works reliably, quickly, and without hassle - except for random bluetooth connection issues which may or may not be due to my Motorola earset.
My only beef with it is that the compactness comes at the price of text entry speed. It's still leaps better than T9, but well short of what's possible with a physical keypad, and a notch or two off of even the iPhone. But if I send 5 texts a day, that's heavy use for me, so this is hardly worth my worry.
No trouble after dropping it face down onto concrete with a vinyl/gel cover on it.
Considering it's a $0.01 upgrade (+ AT&T $18 fee) under contract extension at Amazon.com right now, more bang for the buck is hard to find.
This phone is great! only complaint is the size and no physical keyboard >.<
even so its better than the tilt2 i came from
I like the aria. It's fast, compact, and looks pretty.
I chose the aria because of its smaller size. I was coming from a motorola pebble so I didn't want anything gigantic. It even sports the same soft back as the pebble which is comforting.
There are, however, some things that I do not like about the phone. I don't like the antenna being built into the back cover; I feel that over time the contacts might wear out. Additionally, the back cover itself is annoying... It isn't as securely attached as I'd like; the glass around the top of the phone tends to lift up about 1mm from its protective back cover - something I noticed a few days after purchasing the phone. And lastly, I'm regretting buying a phone this small; I'm 6' so my hands are fairly large, it's a little hard to hold a phone this size without dropping it. An evo 4G would fit much better in my hand.
Having said that, I believe without a doubt that the screen will crack if you drop it onto contrete from waste high without a case for it. I have never dropped my phone though...
But I did go through a car accident with it (no case). When everything was all said and done I found my little aria under the brake peddle.. It was in my cup holder before. Not a single scratch on the screen - no idea how that happened.

My first phone to welcome me to the Android world and I said it did a great job, i also got a lot of help from the community here though >.<
I love my aria, only problem is battery life, but I keep it on the charger most of the time so there are no worries. When I turn my data off, it can go 24 hours without a charge without a problem.
I love this phone. It was my first Android and considering I was coming from WM 6.5 it was a huge upgrade. While I like the large screens of other androids I felt they were too bulky and opted for this one. Other than a few shortcomings (slower processor, smaller screen, and no flash mainly) the phone is great.

Someone should make a video of 'real life events'. You know...having the phone on lap then getting out of the car, etc. Because, in those instances, the phone isn't falling straight down. It's got some angle and slide to it.

I am with you. I have never had a case, but do have a screen guard. Never had a problem yet.
It makes me laugh how the iphone crowd go on about how great looking their phone is and how the glass back looks great. Or when they go on about how the S2, looks like cheap plastic. Yet they cover their phone with a £1.99 cover from ebay, so they never see or feel the phone. And the gel, rubber cover from ebay is cheaper and tackier than the S2 phone.
this is the biggest downside of the phone... i don't care for the minor issues that i read about this phone except for this.. what was samsung thinking? didn't they test a few phones before putting it into production? didn't they test how tough gorilla glass 2 or lack there of before using it on their flagship phone?
fail!
i'm still upgrading to it though.. LOL

Zagg is horrible. They all feel like they were dragged through sand before shipping out.
yeah, this was my first time using zagg, i needed something right away and that was the only one i could find in store yesterday.
I had a Zagg on my Captivate. And I know what you mean about the orange peel effect. It made using Swype really interesting. But honestly after like 2 weeks the skin totally smoothed out. The same one is still on that Captivate and my daughter is using it 23 months later and it still looks good. I probably won't ever buy one again but to be fair they do have a long break-in period.
I have Skinomi, came out perfect.
Zagg actually advertises the orange peel as a feature, not the drawback it actually it. "Gives more grip!" ugh

Think its suppose to be their anti glare feature...either way I avoid Zaggs whenever possible.
Yeah haven't used zagg since my iPhone 3GS days. One day I left my phone on top of my car and the material prevented it from sliding off after being on the road for around 5 miles (never went over 50 though). The same material made it way to labored to use the touch screen though....
The Skinomi screen protector is really cheap on Amazon right now:

It says normally it's $11.95. Right now it's $0.99

Somebody in the One X forum was raving about them so I ordered them. I put them on today and they really are incredible. I would challenge anyone to detect a screen protector was on my phone. I've used Zagg's and these are thinner, not draggy to the touch, and have no orange peel. They are wet apply and were pretty easy to get on correctly. And the One X is a ***** because of all the angular cuts it has on the sides. It also comes with protection for the camera lens. Mine's curing but I'll post pics of it on a grey phone for you pebble blue people when it's set.
Here's a pic from the One X post...

I have an OLD best skins ever skin on my Ipod, probably been there since 2006 or 2007. Still on, still works great, but I hate the feel of it. I'm a big fan of the bare glass.

I'm guessing the tech may have changed a little over 5-6 years.
