Cyangenmod nightlies - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a couple of days before I have to get back working at veggie harvest. I want to mess with the Nook SD card a bit and I noticed the nightly versions of Cyanogenmod. Are these experimental versions of Cyanogenmod or are they the stable version with additional work done on them? I splurged and bought an additional SD card so I could mess with Cyanogen and not trash the working card.

Nightlies are unofficial ROM's with various developer's fixes to problems that may, or may not, have anything to do with the Nook Color. They aren't advertised as stable, or even usable. They just have the latest updates made to them. That said, most of the time the nightlies won't cause problems, but there's no need to install them unless you just like to live on the bleeding edge. The best thing to do is watch the nightlies users thread for problem comments and decide for yourself when and if you want to install one.

OK! Thank you! I'm more of the kind that wants to live on the dull edge, very dull, in fact a flat edge with no sharp corners if possible. I got the Nook back from the sticky hands of my grandson, he has himself a real nice 16GB Nook tablet now. Did a bit of bartering for it, now he has to sign up and learn how to do the Andriod changy thing with it. Maybe it will keep his mind off of the girl friends for a bit.

All these ROMs

Having a hard time deciding what ROM to run, they seem pretty much all the same.
Anyone care to explain the difference? Or point me in the right direction what I feel would be the best for me?
cm 3.4.6 is quite stable and fast.
but without more info on what you looking for, no one but you knows whats best for you
I'm running the cyanogen 3.4.6 and it's awesome. It's optimized to be very fast. The ROM itself overclocks, or actually just correctly clocks the G1 to 528Mhz, so no need for the widget, and has extremely snappy menus, etc. It also supports multitouch zoom in and out in the browser...very cool! Try it...this ROM will make a noticable difference in performance. My G1 now BLOWS all my friends and even my old iPhone 3g away (my 3g even has a custom ROM on it!)
I'm also having a hard time choosing a ROM. I just want something fast and stable with apps2sd.
JF 1.51 is good if you just want a standard cupcake rom with root, nothing special.
Cyanogen builds (which I'm using at the moment) are built for speed and stability, but apps2sd on ext3 gave me so many problems.
Hero builds are only really for testing. Rosie looks great but is very laggy and both the hardware LED and bluetooth are broken. I only kept it for a couple of days.
I was just about to try one of haykuro's HTC magic ports when I came across this thread
been using jf's roms and have always been happy with them.
recently went to cm 3.4.6 and have to admit i'm impressed......really zippy
I would have to say that JF's roms, although not frequently updated or loaded with all the extras, are consistently the most stable and trouble free.
Cyanogen builds are extremely fast, have lots of extras, and are constantly being updated and upgraded. I would read though the comments to pick the version that best suits you. Always having the latest build is not necessarily the best idea. You'll have to decide which version to use.
TheDude! That's what I'm currently using, and I love it. There seems to have been a short period now where new updates that address the few remaining bugs have not been fixed. Not sure what's going on in regards to this, but using TheDudesCupcake.v1.3.beta12-signed.zip is working pretty much flawlessly for me. Note: That version is NOT the latest version. You'll have to search the thread (it's on the last few pages) for a link to get that version. It seems that's the stable pick of Dude's latest.
Hero ports: Tried them briefly, removed them promptly. Not ready for primetime, IMHO.
Google ION ports: I'd go with JF over ION right now. Not much in the way of development on the ION front, so nagging problems aren't getting fixed. At least that's been my experience.
Again, I'm on Dude's right now. I'm waiting for a replacement phone to be delivered sometime this week, and I'm not exactly sure if I'll use Dude's or Cyanogen's on the new phone. Or maybe even JF's. I plan on really putting the different builds through their paces on this broken down ole phone. Then I'll decide.
I highly suggest giving this chart a good look. It will help you decide...
http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/android/android_build_information.asp
I'm using JAChero version 1.6b. I love the features but it is very slow and no bluetooth is a bummer. I'm waiting for a Class 6 SD card to see if that helps (class 2 now).

The previous post says it all. It was almost frustrating for me at first trying to decipher what was what. But a wise man once told me "...try all the different roms! Don't be afraid to experiment!". With the 1.4 recovery you can store several different roms on your sdcard, backup your current rom, wipe, flash a new rom to try it, wipe, flash a different rom to try that one, etc. If you decide that you didn't like any of those... just restore back to your previous backup. Simple as that. No pc needed. Thats when it becomes hella interesting.
Right after that the AndroidSpin ROM DB dropped. It kindof made things easier because most of the majors are laid out side by side. If my two cents matters... Cyanogen def top ranks in stability and speed. DudesCupcake and Soulife ION Remix worked liked butter for me too, the themes were a plus. Currently I'm wearing the lastest JACxROM. I'm a sucker for nice grafix. But hey thats just me, compared to alot of other cats around here, i don't know jackspit. Have fun.
I think the OP found a rom by now, look at the last post before gary.lavin brought this **** back from the dead....june 28th...someone has been going through EVERY damn page lol.

but it is so fun to go back 20 or so pages, find something that doesn't have a definitive answer then resurrect that mofo. i think i may (just to be a major ass) go to the last page of every sub forum and resurrect the last non locked thread lol. oh wait, that would take too much time away from doing something that matters lol. oh well.

Thinking about getting a nook, whats stable?

im a android fan boy, currently rocking the nexus s 4g.
i can get a nook for a good deal so im really interested.
i love honeycomb but from what i can tell its buggy?
the dev forum is kinda a mess and i dont know whats new or whats old?
so whats the most stable and fast to use for surfing, downloading apps, typical android stuff.
what honey comb rom is stable?
im just pretty lost, the forum is bulked up with stuff everywhere.
CM7 is the best rom for the Nook period. Go with the latest Nightly as stables are less stable than the nightlys these days and so far behind feature wise it isn't even funny.
About honeycomb: its never going to happen. Ever. Google will not put out the source code and what we have now has been reverse engineered from the SDK and it is basically unusable.

thanks,
i heard overclocked that the nook really flies, and it blows other pads like the touchpad out the water (that is of course until the TP ever gets android ported)
Blindly grabbing the latest nightly may not be the best advice--I always poke my head in this thread and check the last page or so to make sure there's not a rash of trouble reports before I download a new nightly. The vast majority are quite stable, but every once in a while there's a dud. I also generally don't grab a nightly that's less than a day old.
I agree that CM7 is the best rom so far, but I will also suggest to try every rom out there. Flashing a ROM on the NC is extremely simple, unlike say, a Samsung Captivate (I have one).

Since most are based on CM7 and many people start having issues when updating to different ROMS and then trying to go back I would stick with CM7.
What's Stable
I'd have to say that CM7 is the most stable ROM that is available for the Nook Color. I know that the Honeycomb build is coming along, but until Google actually opens up the Honeycomb source it's not going to make the strides you want.
CM7 based off of Gingerbread is an excellent build. ClockWorkMOD (CWM) is now on 3.2.0.1 and supports Nooks with v1.3 firmware.
ManualNooter 4.6.16 - Gain Root
ClockWorkMOD (CWM) - 3.2.01
CM7 nightly release - running Ginergergread #200.
Nook Tweaks - Overclock your Nook and gain some audio fixes. (built in overclock kernal).
The only hiccup I have encountered is the Market issue with CM7. There are various fixes out there, the easiest being to reset your LCD Density. Besides that the ROM is table and works great.
I'd wait for the Honeycomb port to fully "develop" before I start using it.

I think you can start forget about the Honeycomb and keep fingers crossed for ICS.

Sorry to break it too you but honeycomb won't ever "develop" its basically as far as the devs can go without source code.

Yea i dont think anything will come about honeycomb without a source.
look at motorolas without kernel sources.
im running the nexus s 4g now and love it.
coming from a evo, epic 4g, optimus and now the nexus.
truth be told i love android.
im going to try to get a nook for around 125.
unless i score a touchpad for 99.
so its very stable and quick?
i wouldnt notice a difference with lets say a store bought tab (within reason of course)?
Got mine in the summer and started with 7.1.0 ever. Ran that for a month and then got nightly 172 and ben using that since. Running on sd card - SanDisk 16GB, cl 4. I have the occasional fc and reboot about once or twice a month.

[Q] New Nook Color with v 1.3 on it?

I just received a NEW NC from B&N as a replacement for my certified pre-owned unit that was damaged upon arrival. They upgraded me to a new one which was very nice of them indeed. They told me it would already have v1.4.2 on it. I just checked it out and this one has v1.3 on it. Is there a reason that I would want to keep 1.3 on it and block all future OTAs? Or does it not matter and should I just let it upgrade itself?
P.S. - I'm going to be running CM7 from an SD card.
Thanks folks.
Hi I literally received my Nook Color 1.3.0 on the mail today. This afternoon I rooted mine watching this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV1cBDpNQic which made the process super easy.
I would recommand keeping 1.3.0 for root because I found the whole process to be quite easy although I don't know if new updates necessarily make it any harder. I mean after all if you are gonna go Cyanogemod why bother with the Nook updates.
I installed and tried two of the unoffical CM9 all day. Loved the interface, but after constant wifi issues and such I decided CM9 is just not ready yet for me. Been playing with CM7 Mirage Kang all night. Other than it being super fugly compared to CM9 things are working great so far.
Thanks to all Nook Color CM9 Developers for their hard work by the way. Looking forward to the Offical Nightly Builds whenever that may be.
I just bought a new Nook Color last week from Staples. It still only has 1.2 on it.

If you are going to run CM exclusively, why keep B&N firmware on eMMC? You'll gain a lot of flexibility loading CM on there instead.
If you are going to bother with B&N firmware (I do), then 1.4.x is a significant change. I think it's better than older versions, but a lot of folks liked the previous functionality. A big question is what you intend to do with it. For some magazine subscriptions, you must be running 1.4.x.
And of course, the bloody thing will update itself at some point if you don't block OTA updates.

Wife has a nook color, stock unrooted wanting to view email/ webrowsing more effectively than what she can now. I am looking at rooting the device and wondering what opinions are out there. Should I wait until ICS roms are more stable or should I jump in with something out there now? If I should go now what do you recommend?
Well, if you are asking should you wait for ICS to be further developed before installing a custom ROM on the device, the answer is'a no, from me.
CM9 is plenrty far along to my mind and getting better every day. But if you don't intend to keep up with the updates with any regularity, then try CM7 which is Gingerbread.
It's great and stable. And most of what she learns about operating it will still apply whenever you decide to upgrade to ICS.
ICS s really great at this point, but flash still doesn't work and is probably a little ways away. That means no internet videos of any quality, at the minimum. If she wants a better browsing experience, stick with CM7 for a while.
I personally had nothing but a pleasant experience using the Mirage 7.2 Kang. MiRaGe is pretty good about support as well, although only if you flash the ROM internally (to emmc). Which, unless you are planning to dual-or-more boot, there is no reason to install by sdcard. Go ahead and flash to emmc. Supposedly you void your warranty by doing that, but there are a million threads about going back to B&N stock. It's really easy.
So flash whatever looks good. You can always try something else later. The first one is hard. Everyone after that is easy as it gets. Oh, and root access is now a user-defined option. You don't have to be rooted while running Cyanogen.

If that's all she wants, and she's otherwise happy with the device running B&N firmware, you should consider just rooting it. Everything will work as it does now, including the nice B&N features (read-to-me, free in-store reading, automatic subscription updates, etc.), but you can add as much or as little additional functionality as you want. If she subscribes to any B&N periodicals or reads enhanced ebooks from B&N, this may be important.
If you run CM or any alternate firmware, be aware that the B&N Android app does not have the same full functionality of the B&N firmware. Some books and periodicals can, at least today, only be read using native B&N firmware. Hopefully, they'll update the app soon to address this.

[Q] New Owner of Transformer TF300T

Hi everyone, great threads on this forum and it's helped guided me with a lot of questions that I've been facing.
So my wonderful gf bought me this tablet as a surprise last week, I've greatly enjoyed it.
But I'm still a little tossed up on it, the experience with the tablet has been mixed.
At times it's great speedy, responsive, and probably providing me with the best first time experience with a Android based tablet.
Other times not so much, I do understand this is a year old tablet, not the latest and greatest (as far as the RAM goes, display can be a little better but still awesome). So at times it would be sloooooooooooow, and chuggish.
I remember reading on the forum somewhere forgot who posted it, but they were comparing a Samsung Note/Galaxy to this and it's night and day at times, games would be running a lot more smoother on those units then this one. (which I've come across when I was showing off to my cousins and they had a Note, showoff failed)
So I just have a couple of questions and maybe you guys can all help me with a few suggestions.
Is this table worth keeping? Or do I wait for the next generation of the Transformer to come out?
Should I root/custom Rom for a better experience? But then again, shouldn't a brand new out of a box tablet give me that optimum experience already?
I've searched and read multiple threads and it's given me somewhat of a direction.
But waiting for a brand new tablet with Tegra4 + more RAM otw could also be more worthwhile.....
My gf paid retail value for this tablet (which is pretty steep up in Canada 500$?), so I'm just trying to see what would be the best...either I return and wait up? or Root/Rom and try the new experience.
I know I've been a little vague, but I really don't know what else to add as I'm still a FOB (fresh on the boat :fingers-crossed with Android Tablets.
I guess, am I expecting too much out of a unit that is a year old?

Welcome on board, I've had the same experience like you with the tablet so I am going to provide you with some thoughts of mine, there is also a thread called "would you buy this tablet again" somewere.
I'd highly recommend using an app called clean-master it's basically Androids counterpart to the famous CCleaner on a pc, whenever the tablet feels slow/laggy run it.
The display is ok, but like you said it could and should be brighter with a higher PPI but since it's more of a budget tablet Asus had to cut costs somewhere.
Better experience:
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM would be a good way to get a way better experience out of this thing. After receiving mine baack I've installed Paranoid 3.99 althoug it's not the official release it is very stable, responsible and offers a lot of customization options, stock Android ones are heavily lacking. You can also overclock this thing without any worries for example mine is running at 1,5 ghz right now and the experience is way better then before although for most of my stuff already to fast, since I am only doing notes, browsing and emailes on my tablets.
If I were you, I would wait for the TF 701 release:
Screen: 300ppi 2560 x 1600 resolution
inside: 2 gb RAM 1,9 ghz Tegra 4 cpu
according to Asus it will cost 499 $ with an included dock station, like all Asus tablets it offers an SD slot hopefully on the tablet and the dock
If you are looking for even more power the next note from Samsung might be worth a look, the screen quality will be the same but it comes with powerful 3 GB of RAM, so perfect for multitasking if you need it the downside is Samsung is looking at a 699 $ pricetag.
Hope that helps and welcome aboard

I've been following that thread Is it still worth buying this tablet extensively, it's been very very informative.
From what I got after reading that thread is that a lot of people are happy with this tablet.
I've decided to keep this tablet for now, and if/when the next generation one does come out, maybe I'll pawn this off and hopefully get that one.
Would you guys be able to guide me into which thread might have a list of roms that I may find that may be suitable for me?
As well as which information you would need from me to help you with a selection.
Thank you guys.

Personally I am still undecided in terms of waiting for the TF 701 or even the next generation, if Asus does I can see them packing it with 4 gig of RAM and then we can really talk about multi tasking but the TF 701 looks really great from what I've seen and read so undecided.
In terms of ROM I am big fan of Cyanogenmod and Paranoid, both are offering great customization options, superuser abilities right from the installing and of course a much smoother experience than stock Android.
Paranoid has an unofficial 3.99 (Android 4.3) build currently and Cyanogenmod is offering Nightly builds, since both aren't official releases some things might not work yet but they are for the most part stable. I would manually install them and use a tool like goomanager for flashing/updating the ROM if available.

I'm a little torn as well....the TF701 does look amazing spec wise...I'm still contemplating if I should return and grab that one....but my first tablet...kind of want to pop my Root/Custom rom cherry with this one as I've read great reviews about it from everyone on the forum so far. :good:
Is there a thread/site that you can kindly guide me to so I can take a look at these ROM's to see what they offer me and which one might suite me the best?
As well would I be able to retain the Asus Apps or would it be a clean slate ROM?
Still a little lost on some of these ROM options, and if I didn't like the ROM's is it possible to go back to factory defaults?
Thanks once again, much appreciated.

Things to make sure before doing that:
1. Use the right version for your bootloader of either Clock Work Mod oder Team Win Recovery Projects
2. Backup all your important apps with Titanium Backup Pro
Links Cyanogenmod, Paranoid is also known as AOSPA you can get it here they used to have an official website but can't find it right now also you are going to find a lot of versions including the newest in the Development section of this forum.
You can also use the GooManager to flash/update your ROMS, especially useful if you are using nightly builds for Cyanogenmod
as for the Asus Apps:
It really depends what you need, personally I've done a full app backup and only restored the ones I sometimes use such as livebackgrounds, if so mething important is still missing I'll just restore it using Titanium Backup
Going back to your "usual Asus ROM" is rather easy:
Just use CWM or TWRP and select the Restore option
Before installing a new ROM:
Do a davlik/system/cache/data wipe, I would not recommend to wipe the whole internal or external sd card because all your data will be lost so be careful there
I am sure there are people who can give you a way better introduction on all the available Roms than me, since I am just stickong to the ones that work perfect for me and I am only having this tablet since may so good luck

You've been of great help.
I'll browse around those ones for sure and take a look and learn some more before doing anything.
Are there any other steps I would need to do prior to flashing a rom?
I've been reading unlocking the unit before flashing the ROM? Not too sure what that is about.
As usual Thanks!

Glad, I've helped you
Steps you need
1. rooted tablet just search for motorshoper here - just subscribe to the thread it's an awesome tool to get superuser "root" access
2. download the bootloader unlocker from the Asus webpage
should work flawlessly if you aren't sure, about having root rights use an app like root checker
be aware always make sure to read the steps carefully and only download the right TWRP or CWM version for your bootloader. Also search for potential problems before atempting to downgrade versions, without having a working backup this way you are going to save yourself a bit of time and trouble.

Thats part of the fun when you are using custom ROMs there are tons outthere and thanks to the former mentioned tools trying them out and see if they fit you, is easy.
Can't wait to change my blackberry so I can enjoy custom Roms on my handy too.

Gasssps Blackberry?
I'm on the iPhone 4 so I shouldn't be saying much..
Question - any reason why I would go with a nightly build over a RC/S build?

Well I love their keyboards but the lack of custom roms and superuser rights is very disappointing,.at.least you can jailbreak the iPhone.
The differences are as follows:
Nightly builds are less stable and some things might not work right now but they include newer features
Stable/RC builds are more stable and most if not all features are working flawlessly
so which build to use will fully depend on what you want, if you are looking for the newest 4,3 features nightlies are the one to go, if you value a stable and feature complete build more I'd go with a RC/S type. The middleway would be to choose a monthly build sadly there aren't any available for CM right now.

Hmmm I'll look into those again and see
I'm having a problem right now...
I got CWM installed fine (I Think)
The problem I'm having is when I go to choose zip from sdcard, it won't mound the sdcard or the internal
So I'm stuck...I can't seem to root it now.

Have you done it, in the correct order? First you need to add the ROM, then "add more Zips" select the gapps file
I've had the same problem with the external SDcard so I moved it to the internal one and it worked, but sorry no clue why it doesn't work with an external one

Here are my steps
1. Unlocke downloaded from Asus site
2. Downloaded CWM
3. Fastboot loaded CWM
After that I logged onto the Recovery
Tried installing from SDcard to root
But can't detect, another thread a nice gent, has given me the pointer to try to use TWRP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446177
So I'm going to give that a shot and see if that helps me out more.

Have you installed the .blob or .img file?
If you are using TWRP there is also a tool called TWRP Manager: so you can normally boot your tablet with it, start the manager make all the settings and it will automatically reboot your tablet into recovery mode.
Personally I have tried CWM and TWRP liking TWRP better too.
Another step you can check:
Go into Goomanager - Settings and look for the default "save folder" if you are having your .zip files in another folder make sure, to put them into this directory. Usually it's something like goomanager/Roms/ or so.

So I have TWRP installed, man all I can say is that it is night and day in the steps of setup.
So much easier and direct.
I've downloaded goomanager I'm taking a look at it now and seeing what I can do.
I'm running Cromi-X right now and browsing no longer lags, I'm content.
Wondering what else I can do now.....

Something I'd highly recommend:
check the app privacy rules and remove all the permissions most apps shouldn't have i.e using your location, reading SD or contact lists
personally I have also overclocked my tablet it is running at 1.5 ghz now could go as far as 1.7 but I am very happy with the performance so far
another cool thing most custom roms provide is the ability to customize your lock screen.
