[PRO] guide to update to ICS for noobs - Xperia Arc General

Hey guys. First off, I am not from the xperia community so don't flame me if I dont know where to post this. There isn't a xperia pro thread and I saw something about the pro in the Arc thread so I decided to post this here. I am just helping out a friend. So here it is. He asked me how to update the Pro to stock ICS. With some back and forth between us, I think I have given him the answer. Please tell me if this guide ( well, its not really a guide just links to the guide) is good, or if we have to do something else. Thank You.
HERE IT IS:
Ok...well lets sort things out.
I see where you got the file from: http://xperiadev.wordpress.com/flashing/xperia-ftf-firmwares/ which is the mirrored link from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682185
But, if you clicked on the source in the page you sent me, you'll go http://www.XPERIA.cz/ which eventually would get you to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651463 ( this I think is where there is an update.zip as someone mentioned about it)
The ftf file needs Flashtool - http://xperiadev.wordpress.com/guidelines-xperia/flashtool-fastboot/ to be flashed.
And done.
I got all of that from the link you sent me. For the flashtool method, I think the reason it say you MAY void warranty is because the amount of customization that program has.
I keep seeing all this talk about Emma, so on Sony's website I found this PDF ( in attachments)
DUDE, IF YOU MAKE SENSE OF ALL OF THIS YOU ARE GOOD.
FROM SONY, therefore official:
Now from big daddy themselves, http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/35239 That site give good information. Follow that site on how to use flashtool. And see, you could also root, but don't. Not yet. This site is from Sony and thing, so remember to read everything. They mentioned taking out your sim and sd which I say is smart. The only thing is that they mentioned something about Sony Update Service -http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/update-service/ "your wish if you want to stay on it but i suggest you to repair your phone software using SUS. It will reinstall the original ICS software in your mobile For that download SUS and follow the onscreen instructions SONY UPDATE SERVICE"
So yeah read everything I have here and lets go,
How I will do it? Well, I would ignore everything else and follow Sony's method. Its the same thing, but seeing how they explained how to do it, it'll be easier.
How To Update Your Xperia to Android 4.0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crcwr9BAtjU
Follow this video. It is really good. Lol, as a side note, I knew this guy was trini the time I heard him.
Anything else, just ask. So remember, read everything. But I say watch the video before going to Sony's guide.
The video is very good, so if you have any advance question leave him a question in the comment section in his video and he could help you. Not now, but when you wanna root, make an xda account on xda developers. You can ask questions, create a thread and give input there.
PS. The reason I didn't know about the ftf file is because it is only for Sony devices and I never had experienced with them.
OK, so remember, I am an HTC Amaze user not an xperia user so I'm a noob in Sony's phone, per-se.

I would think posting a video on how to unlock the bootloader is better since there are a lot of people wanting to try but just don't know where to start.

One click rooting method in less than 2 minutes

Root your phone without unlocking the bootloader. How? A new application called UnlockRoot does it all for you! Literally, all you need to do is download the UnlockRoot.exe, run it and enjoy your new rooted device. I can confirm that it is 100% working and took about 2 minutes from start to finish.
All you have to do is connect to your computer, enable USB debugging which is accessible through Settings>applications>devlopment>USB debugging
open UnlockRoot.exe and click root, after that it should take the comp. 1 min tounlock then 1 min to reboot then voila you have it rooted! You will then see the superuser app inside your app drawer. I recommend you to download busybox and titanium backup to have full control on your device. I've just rooted my xperia play and my wife's arc s using method. Both of them are running v2.3.4 so this should work on lower versions.
If there will be an instance wherein your device didn't reboot automatically, manually restart your device.

I checked out the site and it doesnt say compatible with Xperia PLAY or any SE phones for that matter. Plus I am already rooted and unlocked bootloader. The site looks a little questionable like maybe the software could be virus filled. I dont know though. Only way to find out would be to try it, and for that I have no reason to. IT show support for the Kindle Fire. Anyone try it?

First of all that is not my site and i'm not a spammer. I only posted this method in two different forums, the other one is in the android general hacking tips. The only reason why i mentioned the site is because i'm having problems uploading the unlockroot.exe launcher in this thread. As you can see,i'm only a new member and i don't usually start threads. I'm just trying to help because i had a lot of frustrations using other rooting methods. I have a descent job and i'm not gonna benefit in spamming so don't accuse me. I just felt very excited to share this method as this worked like a charm for my xperia play. I'm not forcing you to try this so ban me if you feel like doing so.

I noticed that too but trust me,it worked for my xperia play and my wife's arc s. Both of them are running the latest android v2.3.4 that's why i'm very surprised that it worked. Other rooting methods didn't work for that version so i resorted to doomlord's method but i'm having problems installing the adb drivers as i'm using windows7. I'm so happy using this method because it's very safe,no need to unlock your bootloader. Best regards!

I'm curious, why not post directly to their site, instead of a link to a file host?
No, offense, but if you post directly to their home site, it makes it seem a lot more legit than just posting a link to your download account.

Sorry bro but i already did that when i started this thread. I just edited my post because that d31boy guy is accussing me of being a spammer and just promoting that site.
When I see a brand new poster posting a link to relatively unknown website for use of an unknown exe file, it's hard not to be suspicious. I mean, you obviously know the benefits of root and you know your way around this site. The site has absolutely no mention of how the root is applied (which isn't your fault provided you don't have an affiliation to the site ). It's a pretty big leap of faith.
However, I may have jumped in a bit too quick on this one. It would have been better just to report the post and allow a mod to make a more informed decision. For that, I apologise.
All this method is, is the zergRush method with a different name...
Here's what I did (quick run thought of what i did, attached screenshot for reference)
Downloaded it from the OP's post (http://unlockroot.com was running at 2000BYTES/SEC)
Installed it on my XP partition
rebooted, went to my linux partition
Mounted XP Partition
went to \Program Files\Unlockroot\tools\
Copied rootutility to /home/myusername/
adb shell rm -r /data/local/tmp
adb shell mkdir /data/local/tmp
adb push rootutility /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/rootutility
adb shell /data/local/rootutility
and got the attachment

posting guides that you've clearly taken from posts elsewhere on the web or even here on xda, passing them off as your own and brazenly pleading for people to hit your "thanks" button is taking the piss.
You've posted guides on rooting, forcing OTA updates, and now installing flash player.
All of these were available elsewhere first, none of the work is your own, and nowhere have you acknowledged the original source of your guides.
Its called plagiarism....either stop posting, reference the original source, stop pimping for thanks or I'll report you to the mods, ok?

WOW....I try to help people and this is what I get, being accused of "plagiarism" First of all I don't copy others post's and secondly how dare you come onto a thread I created for the better good and to help others and you come on here and attempt to give it a bad name? I worked hard on my posts I try to make them as understanding and as easy to read as possible. My OTA update post I created that because JB had only just come out and not many people knew how to get it, I checked there was NO thread as to how to update it there might be now but when I posted there wasn't. Same with my root guide it contains links to files I put together no-body else did, I did. And as for the post on Adobe Flash yes that might have been more known of but it still is a useful piece of information to know. Whats wrong with asking for thanks if you have done something to help others? It doesn't cost nothing and it is just a simple click, it helps to build ones reputation. Please do know you facts next time. Go search I even dare you and find posts that have the same information I put up but before I posted them. MyPhone.gr an online Greek mobile support forum has used several of my posts. Did they give me credit? No they didn't. Do I care? No I don't as long as it helps others I don't care if others use my posts. Please don't come onto my posts again with no beneficial information and accuse me of this and that. I will have you reported.
Good day to you,

Alan,
I dare Pal.
You post other people's ideas and work and claim it for your own. You should at least reference where you got your information from as its clearly not your own.
The least you're guilty of is being too "unimaginative" to Google and to see that (amazingly coincidentally) there are already almost identical posts already on XDA or other forums (posted before yours) containing your guides.
The worst you're guilty of is claiming the credit for other people's work.
So what's it to be, incompetence or dishonesty?
ps. I welcome the chance to exchange some date-stamped links with the mod. The evidence won't lie > this one posted on 15 July is almost identical to the post you're claiming the credit for yesterday the 25th http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336

Maybe he is just new and little bit 2 "thanks" hungry, but he definitely needs 2 focus on using search button...
Greg, I wouldn't mind if he just said "hey guys this isn't my work, I spotted it elsewhere, thanks are due too xxxxx" but he just passes stuff off as his own. Its so blatant and he's very pushy on the "thank me"s. I spotted his other threads before and ignored them, but this one is just too blatant and too much, I had to say something. Very obvious after a bit of googling

[MINI GUIDE] Easiest Soft Brick Escape - For the Desperate User

Over the internet there are various guides teaching the lesson 'how to get out of a soft brick.' Some guides can be hard to follow and very hoarse leaving a noob feeling like he/she has destroyed their device. Fear Not.This is a comprehensive guide for less experienced users who happen to find themselves in a soft brick.
Dictionary - Soft brick - the phone can still boot, and be flashed easily but in its current state is unusable.
- Hard brick - the phone cannot boot and requires additional devices to do so (USB Jig, Riffbox).
This is the quickest escape route on the interweb and you will be done in no time. Here we go:
First Download Flashtool. Here (You may download any version from the previous versions tab.)
Install Flashtool.
Find the stock firmware for your device. For the x8
E15i android 2.1.1 http://www.multiupload.com/VKNI6Q6ET5 (2.1.1.C.0.0 latest firmware)
Dictionary - stock firmware - latest version of software released by the manufacturer
After downloading the firmware. Extract the file. You will be left with a firmware file with .ftf as the ending.
Go into 'my computer' then 'flashtool' folder then 'firmware'. Then copy the .ftf file into that folder.
Close the folder.
Now to make sure that your phone is recognized by flashtool, go into computer then flashtool then drivers.
Now Install the driver for the x8.
Connect your x8 to your computer.
open the Flashtool program.
Click the bolt icon in the top left.
Select the name of the firmware you downloaded (2.1.1.C.0.0) in the left panel. it will highlight blue.
Click ok (bottom right).
A box will appear telling you to put your device into flash mode. Follow the instructions it gives.
Once this is done the box will dissapear and firmware will flash.
Finally device will reboot and phone will be back to normal.
Congratulations you have unbricked your device.
I hope you found this useful. Please thank me using the button if you appreciate my efforts. #
This is my first guide. Tell me what you think. Anything I could improve.
Very good guide, cause didn't know yet about this..very thanks..

nice and quick guide, i guess that what a paniced newbie search for!
suggestion:i think you should add about the installation of drivers,as many users come here telling that their phones is not recognized by flashtool
also change the 4-noobs at the title, is kidda disturbing...put "for" instaid of 4
There is about 100 threads about that. Just color of text and size is diferent!

Thankyou for everyone's support. I have changed the '4' to 'for' in the title as suggested by stamatis16.
also
As someone who studied psychology, I know that people learn in very different ways. A guide from someone else may not help a certain person. Different fonts evoke different responses and speeds of learning. Different colours do similar things too. So in response to the 'there are millions of guides' argument, I say . Everyone learns differently and this may help someone desperate more effectively than any other. I know that when I needed this help none of the guides were as simple as the one I have composed.
In addition to this, please remember, I am spending my personal time to aid others. So negative flaming saying that my posts are 'not really helping' is always a let-down.
Thankyou once again for the support.
Special thanks lyhengboy stamatis16 for comments.
Guys, think of it this way. Its better for someone to make a new thread which will prevent 2000 threads asking the same topic.
Hmm OP can we merge this topic with the existing one with Lucas? You can always PM him for ideas
For now I agree that it is somehow odd to create extra thread for the same purpose for noob knowing that there is already an existing one. Very nice purpose but we need to be organized as well hugs.

I can understand that but I have clearly highlighted in my post before this one why I made a new thread. Please read it if you have not.
Also I would like to have my own 'branding' if you like, of guides and reviews. I try to spice each one up differently to combat that argument.
Thankyou very much for being kind when posting. Sorry if I come across as rude, I do not mean to be this way.
Q:Hmm OP can we merge this topic with the existing one with Lucas? we need to be organized as well
A: I would be very sad if you were to delete or move or zap this thread for the reasons you mention above. I have spent great periods of time composing and tailor making this for certain users. As a RC I hope you can understand my reasoning.
Thankyou once again.
EDIT: I have changed the title to make it seem 'different'. I also want to mention my 'dictionary' feature. I think this is different and may help my argument.
I fully understand you. Thy will be done
Can someone with a soft bricked X8 let me know if its possible to boot into safe mode?
Hold menu when booting.
Thankyou. I was a bit scared when you said you wanted to remove this post and 'merge it with another.' Great to know you are so supportive.
Yes, please do not merge this. I have benefited allot from this post. Merging it I think will take out the time put into to this. Plus, other people may not see this. I am happy the op decided not to merge.

I don't have a soft or a hard brick. But I acknoledge you made a great guide and thank you anyway.
It was also useful because I am still considering if I should root my Galaxy Ace Duos GT-S6802 or not. And this made me realize that even if it bricks, it can be reverted. Do you have any idea if a hard brick is reversible? Also, in worst case scenario, can I simply download the software from samsung site and install it? Thanks. And sorry if I broke any rules here, I'm still a noob (still scared by the introdutory video haha)

The phone also comes with Sony's new camera user interface, dedicated shutter button and has an aluminium and glass unibody design.

I don't see anything special about it.. I would just as soon download the FTF yourself via XperiFirm.
I just uploaded the C6906 firmware as a flashable zip. Haven't gotten to test it just yet (phone is charging), but it should be fine. Works fine, and had one guy report this FTF didn't work. You've been warned.

If you haven't heard about the stagefright bug on Android devices, You check it here .
Does this thread objective is to explain that the new 5.1.1 ROM for the Z1 has the fix against stagefright?

It's just blogspam, which is why the title and content are not very coherent. Not to mention, at least one user mentioned to me this FTF doesn't work. The MD5 doesn't match, so it's been modified somehow. Since OP/the blog doesn't mention this, I am suspicious.
i've looked all over, and cant seem to find an answer....can i use this (or any other z1 ftf) on the xperia z1s????

You will likely need to find a FTF/zip specifically for the C6916. I have no specific knowledge, but it's likely that anything for a C690x phone will soft-brick yours. According to XperiFirm, a 5.1.1 release isn't available yet for that model.
ive put ftfs on the tl (using an ftf for the xperia t). i was hoping the same would be ok for the z1s

You are throwing serious accusations, if you don't like the thread don't jump to conclusions.
We are creating this firmwares via Flashtool and Xperifirm which this tools are available on XDA.
This firmwares are uploaded to Androidhost and AFH server which most of XDA Developers users knows.
What should I add if somehow I modified the firmwares?
This question is directly to you.

It's not about "not liking" the thread - it's just not very clearly written and is, in fact, copy-paste of a blog post. The subject you chose is confusing, which is weird because you didn't even keep the same subject as the blog post. It's weird to include a marketing description of the phone in a post about new firmware for it. It makes it more unclear why you're making the post. It would have been way more relevant to, say, explain what the Stagefright exploit is, rather than regurgitate a sales pitch.
Contributing to the community is commendable, but it's in your best interest to communicate clearly how the FTF/ZIP/whatever release was created and *any* changes you made from the exact stock image as obtained via XperiFirm.

This is good, and that's how it should be. But you didn't describe the origin of the firmware, or if anything was added (pre-root, Xposed, XZDR, whatever). I don't think really cares where you host so long as it's not annoying or really slow.
The fact is, your FTF's MD5 doesn't match the MD5 of the FTF obtained from XperiFirm. You don't explain why. That should make anyone suspicious.
So, why is it different?

Well I'm a newbie and I will make your advise under consideration, I thought I'm doing something but I was wrong, Copying from my own blog wasn't a great idea.
I didn't edit the firmware except renaming it.
I don't know how did you compared the md5 of the file unless you made it the same I did.

So I guess you didn't test the FTF first? That's a big risk... On a blog, maybe it's different, but on XDA people want to know whether or not something works before they flash it. For example, I posted a flashable ZIP of this same release, but made it clear I hadn't tested yet and explained how I built it. Someone was brave and actually flashed it before I did, but I did go back and test it and update my post to confirm that it works.
It is possible that the person who had a problem with this FTF did something wrong, we don't know for sure. If all you did was download via XperiaFirm, I don't know why it wouldn't work. Obviously, it won't be rooted, but a stock image should still flash just fine.

I just double checked - I misunderstood the download process; I thought that XperiaFirm downloaded complete FTFs, but it is actually flashtool which builds the FTF after the firmware is decrypted. I usually do not watch this process in detail. This makes it much less likely that FTFs from two different people would ever match exactly, even if the contents are the same. In fact, I re-downloaded this FTF and compared MD5s and they didn't match. This makes sense now.
I'm certainly not trying to dissuade you from contributing to the community, but more encouraging you to put more thought into how/what you post here. :good:

You made one flashable zip and you didn't test it, That's a serious problem.
For me whoever made Flashtool and Xperifirm, They made it clear that you flash it at your own risk.
about the FTF file, Its been created as the tool suggest, Download extract compress and done, If an error were occurred during these 3 procedures, Then I would know there is a problem with the file.
Every user must know that flashing the phone via FTF file could damage his phone if there is a slight problem in the tool or the FTF or even the USB cable.
One day I flashed my phone with Chinese USB cable, Guess what? I broke my phone.
What I'm trying to say, If you are suspicious about my FTF, Just extract it and take look at the system files.
I know I'm wrong about the way I put posted the thread but nothing else.
Ok boys, chill out. This is XDA guys, not fight club. OP, that would be you @cranknet. The Stagefright thing is already frightening to those with average knowledge about Android's OS, but to create posts - yes I say it in plural 'coz you have 3 posts of the same exact content, only difference is it's targeted for different devices; that are confusing makes your post sound extremely legit, like top 1 priority legit to the point that an average person would actually think of doing all the steps you mentioned. Ok, so the point is to share and help others out, that's cool. But you got to hand it to @xasbo raising serious doubts as well about how legit this post really is. I mean, look at the other XDA peeps out here posting their FTF. They post where they got it - using Xperiafirm mostly 'coz that's our no. 1 legit source, and they are also posting (well most of them) are posting the regional info like if its TW, SG, US, etc. Some of them are also posting if they did something to it like pre-rooted, SuperSU, or with a custom recovery included so people would know. I'm not suppose to police like this, we have the forum mods to do this but this is a community. Let's keep it clean and relevant. No fighting and hating and s*it.
If you really want to help out, try getting some cues on how some of the people here does it, check these out:

They are putting on the title what the post is about. Since 5.0 people in XDA at least almost all of them have already heard about Stagefright and knows well that 5.1.1. is suppose to fix it plug the battery problem. No need to scare or confuse them even more.
