Over the internet there are various guides teaching the lesson 'how to get out of a soft brick.' Some guides can be hard to follow and very hoarse leaving a noob feeling like he/she has destroyed their device. Fear Not.This is a comprehensive guide for less experienced users who happen to find themselves in a soft brick.
Dictionary - Soft brick - the phone can still boot, and be flashed easily but in its current state is unusable.
- Hard brick - the phone cannot boot and requires additional devices to do so (USB Jig, Riffbox).
This is the quickest escape route on the interweb and you will be done in no time. Here we go:
First Download Flashtool. Here (You may download any version from the previous versions tab.)
Install Flashtool.
Find the stock firmware for your device. For the x8
E15i android 2.1.1 http://www.multiupload.com/VKNI6Q6ET5 (2.1.1.C.0.0 latest firmware)
Dictionary - stock firmware - latest version of software released by the manufacturer
After downloading the firmware. Extract the file. You will be left with a firmware file with .ftf as the ending.
Go into 'my computer' then 'flashtool' folder then 'firmware'. Then copy the .ftf file into that folder.
Close the folder.
Now to make sure that your phone is recognized by flashtool, go into computer then flashtool then drivers.
Now Install the driver for the x8.
Connect your x8 to your computer.
open the Flashtool program.
Click the bolt icon in the top left.
Select the name of the firmware you downloaded (2.1.1.C.0.0) in the left panel. it will highlight blue.
Click ok (bottom right).
A box will appear telling you to put your device into flash mode. Follow the instructions it gives.
Once this is done the box will dissapear and firmware will flash.
Finally device will reboot and phone will be back to normal.
Congratulations you have unbricked your device.

I know what you are talking about,but as long as there are so many who make a new thread for asking help for a brick,I prefer having similar threads with the same information that will help people rather than having stupid threads that are useless after all.....

As someone who studied psychology, I know that people learn in very different ways. A guide from someone else may not help a certain person. Different fonts evoke different responses and speeds of learning. Different colours do similar things too. So in response to the 'there are millions of guides' argument, I say . Everyone learns differently and this may help someone desperate more effectively than any other. I know that when I needed this help none of the guides were as simple as the one I have composed.
In addition to this, please remember, I am spending my personal time to aid others. So negative flaming saying that my posts are 'not really helping' is always a let-down.

I can understand that but I have clearly highlighted in my post before this one why I made a new thread. Please read it if you have not.
Also I would like to have my own 'branding' if you like, of guides and reviews. I try to spice each one up differently to combat that argument.

A: I would be very sad if you were to delete or move or zap this thread for the reasons you mention above. I have spent great periods of time composing and tailor making this for certain users. As a RC I hope you can understand my reasoning.

It was also useful because I am still considering if I should root my Galaxy Ace Duos GT-S6802 or not. And this made me realize that even if it bricks, it can be reverted. Do you have any idea if a hard brick is reversible? Also, in worst case scenario, can I simply download the software from samsung site and install it? Thanks. And sorry if I broke any rules here, I'm still a noob (still scared by the introdutory video haha)

Hello everyone this may be a silly question but I see a lot of talk about roms within these forums can someone please tell me what are roms and how to install them.
Are they like cab files? or is it more like a OS system for mobile devices...
Will Roms override the os system that's on my device now? thanks for any info on this
the rom is the whole OS, including any pre installed programs. It is a big file, around 200meg that gets flashed to the rom memory chip on your phone. When you boot for the first time, it configures (installs, sets itself up) itself onto your device.
If you install a new rom, it completely removes the old rom, so if you hard reset, you get a fresh copy of teh new rom, you can only go back to teh original rom by flashing the original one again.
Think of it a bit like the windows cd that you use to install your PC.
PLease dont reply with 'how do i do it?', , go and read, then tomorrow, read it all again, then read some more, and then read it all again. By saturday/sunday you should be ready to do a trial flash.

I flashed my first rom about 4 months ago using the how to section for noobs. I read it several times, did each step one at a time, testing at each stage to make sure I'd done it right and it works like a charm. Best place to start.

where do I get the encrypted zip update? I saw the new update 1.144.07 yet I couldn't find it anywhere to download? Once I find it and get it decrypted, what would i do next?

@lpachuong, there's nothing we can do with it -yet-, since we have no way to re-encrypt them. It's possible we could do something like build a system.img and flash it with dd, though for now it's only good for poking around in the images.

Too many users ask lots of questions that could be avoided by reading the posts / some other topics. I can totally understand him.
Of course it's no problem to answer 1 or 2 questions - but there are many questions and lots of them do repeat.

Also, saying that it's not useful to him (in a polite way) is a lot better than saying that he's a noob and has no business working with it, and would have taken just as long to type. There's a point where he's just being rude to be rude. :|

There is a difference between a noob and a newb. Right now all I see is a newb asking for information that can be freely found if one spends some time looking for it.

I guess I will be just more patient and wait until we can get access to the recovery mode. I just can't stand it when Acer has no update in Australia. I messed with dd the system and flex img before as well. Hopefully during this time, OP or someone else will come up with something that can re-encrypt it. I saw the chinese update.zip used signapk to pack the package but I failed to do so.
I don't mind being called noob =) People usually call me nerd so it sounds good to be called noob sometimes =D

how can we know the decrypter key and what it is when acer changes it? how?
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DO ANYTHING WRONG AND ANYTHING HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE.
Their are many newbies joining xda daily and many of them want to update their android version so i thought of making a guide to flash stock firmware through odin( i could not find a proper guide so i am making one, if one already exists then sorry everyone)
Firstly, you can download stock firmwares and odin( new and old version) from www.sammobile.com
Now, many people have doubts in their mind that , is flashing firmwares made for any other continent safe? Well yes it is absolutely safe but you may face problems regarding phone signals but that happens very rarely and can be solved easily.
Procedure :-
* firstly, you must insure that kies is installed in your laptop or computer and you have once connected your phone through kies and kies detected your phone.
* then, download the firmware you want to flash.
*then extract the zip file.
*you will find 4 files in the extract( maybe youll find more but the rest are just extra stuff that is odin and all that, assuming you already downloaded odin you wont need it) that are a CSC.ZIP file, a CODE.ZIP file, a MODEM.ZIP file and a .PIT file( generally 512.PIT).
*now you must ensure that kies is killed and is not running.
* now ensure that your laptop has battery or it is charging or you will enjoy a ride to hell later if it switches off during the process of flashing ( i recommend to use a laptop as their is a chance that light may go off becasue of any reason and your computer switches off).
* now ensure your sgs has good battery (90%-100%) as their may occur a problem if it switches off.
* now open odin and add the 512.PIT (can be different-xxx.pit) in pit option.
* add MODEM.ZIP in phone option.
*add CODE.ZIP in PDA option.
*add CSC.ZIPin CSC option.
* then make sure that in the left area ( where their are some tickable boxes) you tick F RESET TIME AND AUTOREBOOT( REPARTITION may be ticked only when you want to change partitions or want to get them checked or if you want your sgs to be exactly new, wont clear sdcard, or if you are updating bootloaders).
*then check calmly if you have added all files correctly. ;-)
* then put your phone into download mode(VOLUME DOWN + HOME BUTTON + POWER BUTTON).
First switch it off then do this.
* then use your data cable that came with your sgs and connect your phone to your laptop.
* then take a deep breath and ask god to make everything go fine. ;-)
* click start and wait for odin to perform its magic.
* if everything goes well you are now moved to your desired stock samsung provided firmware and if everything didnt then see download is working or not and if it is then restart the procedure from beginning.

Ill take an example of cf-root which is as close to samsung's stock kernel as possible and is just basic root and nothing else.
You can download cf-root from chainfire's cf-root thread -

You can find download of cf-root for jvs(2.3.5) in the last post of his thread.
*now after downloading cf-root you need to extract it.
* now make sure your phone and laptop has good amount of battery.
*now open odin and click on pda and then add the cf-root xxxxx.tar file you extracted( just pda is required and nothing else)
*now make sure in the left area you have just ticked - F RESET TIME AND AUTOREBOOT and nothing else.
*now switch of your phone and move to download mode(VOLUME DOWN+HOME BUTTON+POWER BUTTON).
* now connect your Phone to your laptop using usb cable.
* now you will see that odin detected your phone and a yellow box has appeared in odin at the top right side.
* now click start and after some seconds your phone will be rooted and will automatically reboot.
* now enjoy and put any kernel or rom you want on your phone and get the best out your samsung galaxy s (be careful).

Firstly, this is My last reply to any offender here.
I didnt really felt offended from such a low-life like you.
I made these guides cause I know about these things and i have tried them many times and I wont make a guide about unbricking because I havent tried it although I know how its done.
I made this guide because the one in the stickies was dated and I think ( its just my opinion) that mine is more detailed.
And I made the battery calibration guide cause I could not find one ( it may be their but its just that I could not find one easily so it is either unpopular or dated or not perfect and detailed).
Also its not that these topics are not necessary, you will surely find someone or another evrytime in general or q/a asking about these things or someone who is claiming that his/her battery is draining fast or acting wierd but doesnt know why.
I think I made my self very clear here so if anyone still feels that these are not needed and are spams then keep it to yourself.

only one problem: your guides are.... copying/paste form stickies themes, which are clearly visible for all... with screenshots, credits and reference.
Of course, you can copy someone's parts, put it together and claim: mine is more detailed.

Haha, another stupid post, I had to reply to this one cant help it.
Firstly I cant remember posting any screenshots , I have just referred to samfirmware.com( which is used by 99% people so if also I would have copied It , i would have ended posting this site's name only ), chainfire's thread-- I don't think their is another better thread to download latest versions of cf-root other than the official thread.
About copy-pasting -- thats why I called you a low-life, as you can only think -ve and cheap and hence thought I copied it but you should know I didn't ( believe it or not I dont care anymore ! ) copied it and swyped it.
Also you told me reading about stickies, I think YOU should read about xda rules before reading stickies which clearly state that their are under 18 s on xda ( I am myself 16) and so no adult matter should be used in your postings.
Also I am not married.

Asking because a useful guide must have a minimum of qualities. Proper English (as stated in forum-rules) and ordered progression.
A proper guide for Odin flashing stock or odexed ROM is NOT OUTDATED and elegantly delivered thanks to Ramad.
3. Why don't you PM the authors of sticky guides and offer your assistance in whatever needs updating?
4. Has Odin support for .zip files?
Tar is a more common format. Or even tar.md5
5. Which kernel devs. don't tell how to get THEIR (not there) build on your phone?

I see plenty of people asking for rooting help etc. I think we need a proper guide on how to backup TA partitions on M & N. How to restore. How to flash recovery and kernels and in which order. Which tools do you need and where do you get them and when everything is set and done, how to flash a rom.
A step-by-step guide.
I see answers like "just unlock and do this and that" which isn't answering peoples questions. And the result is just people asking "and how do i do that?" and the loop of replies with no content continues. I'd be more than happy to help, but havn't had the device for long, nor have i done anything to it yet. So i'm hardly the right person to do so, yet.
Why are you speaking for these 'plenty of people'? I don't see anyone asking, it's only you because you don't put effort into looking up and reading and you want everything to be served in your plate. Everything is very well written if you TRY to search for it.

Not true! For example, you can see 3 posts in a row asking for help (including mine) and noone answers. There ARE plenty of people who need help. And noone is helping. This is a useful post.

If you read the question I posted, I said that for some people the information is not very clear and there are some things that haven't been specified. Especially for the xperia X, why are there so little threads and mods for it? Because it's new? Do you think there will be more mods and stuff in the future?

You should TRY and read the OP again, you clearly didn't get it.
And why i'm speaking for "those" people. Because no one else is. The difference is that i don't have any difficulties doing so, it doesn't bother me. You could've spend your time more productive coming up with suggestions to a possible solution, eliminating those "i need help rooting/flashing/blabla" threads. Whereas you choose the easy way and just be a prick about it.

I'm very sorry dude but I have read so many threads and posts and didn't find any (recent) guide/way to root by recent I mean android nougat, and there is the camera mod for nougat so I am assuming you have nougat 7 rooted on your xperia X, why don't you just spend 5 minutes of your life to help a guy out.. please..

In the future I will buy this phone but now without it I am unable to do some tutorial. I wish I had this phone right now because this phone is awesome and some days ago I destroyed my M4 Aqua. I am into unlocking bootloader, backing up and restoring DRM keys, flashing recovery and making working SuperSU. I did tutorial for M4 Aqua on my Czech forum but I wish I could it here on XDA.

okay, so I can spend some time to write a noob friendly guide on saturday including information about things that troubled me too
=)) finally, I will give you a guild for step by step:
A. backup and restore:
1. fall backup to MM with flashtools (find script for your device)
2. https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
3. read inside topic to find restore code.
B. unlock:
1. go to this site https://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/ to get unlock code
2. turn on develop option (gg please) turn on oem unlock in this
3. follow sony intruction.
C Relock
relock ( use restore code in A) after that use flashtools to flash any firmware you want (like fall back MM)
ps: it is just a summary because you can fix any problem with gg in some other android devices.
ps2: dont use only one device forum to find your answer, try to find it from others. Because sony devices have same problem when flash OS )) or backup DRM and most them was answered so no one wanna write again again about same problem.
ps3: find to learn ^^.

Im writing a big guide for super lazy guys. Even wrote how to unlock bootloader. At least it. might be helpful for someone, thats the point of guides right?
