USB Stick? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was reading the manual, it talks about using the USB port for keyboard, mouse, etc, but not about USB sticks or external HDD. Can the N7 natively detect the USB stick and allow me to access its content? Or do I need a kernel with USB OTG + Terminal Emu command + an adapter?

You should learn how to search. There are few guides on USB OTG.

I have read them. What I don't understand is if this is native or a kernel hack.

Buy an OTG cable, and plug it in. Add peripheral of your choice. There have been hundreds of reports stating that the Nexus 7 does OTG natively. thats what he meant by "Search".

Put OTG in the Forum Search for Nexus Q&A topics and you get 109 threads. Most of them talking about obtaining an OTG cable and using StickMount which itself needs your device to be rooted.

Yes you will need to root and install stickmount before you can use a flash stick or card reader with the nexus. It will work fine with a mouse or keyboard stock but must be rooted for adding more storage.

No one did put a hd, a pen drive or a sd card adapter inside the fire?

they did - there are a lot of threads about that - but the kf don't have usb-host support - it will not work at the moment ...
But the usb-host is not only software? It's not just make a kernel?

can't say for shure - i'm not a dev - but as i understood it's a matter of software (kernel) and the usb port of the kf is not powered
correct me someone if i'm wrong ...

Simply ask Can I connect pendrive for my N7?
I don't know anything about your device, but generally there are three scenarios:
The USB-OTG support...
...is included into the kernel. You are set to go.
...is compiled as a kernel module (.ko) and can manually be loaded into the system. Normally, you will find kernel modules in /system/lib/modules/[sub directory]/
...is obviously missing. If this is the case, you can compile your own kernel module. This is off topic, but I might take some time to write a beginner's tutorial - if there is a common interest?

[Q] Nexus 7 + USB-adapter cable + 3g dongle?

I use an adapter cable for my Nexus 7, so I can plug in various USB stuff (Nexus 7 hosts the stuff).
I am quite happy with that, using keyboards, mice, external USB-drives etc.
My Q's are:
I was wondering a bit about the limits to this support and I guess it comes down to driver support on Android's behalf. I guess the peripherals I mention work on generic drivers/standards etc and is therefore supported as-is by the OS?
And in continuation of that thread: Would it be possible to add support for, say, a USB 3G dongle, would that require a custom driver or what?
Just an idea
You need root and the PPP widget Software from Play store... Cheers

I've already answered these questions and made a video showing it works without root.
Search please, but to answer your question.
Yes Nexus Media Importer will work just fine with an OTG cable.

Unmount OTG USB storage

Hi!
Is there an app or short cut for this? I mean to do in a proper way through settings. You know settings/storage/unmount.
My device is rooted and the USB mounts automatically, so it pops up in MXplayer, EZ file explorer etc.
Regards
