Screen Burn-In >>BEWARE<< - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Greetings fellow Tab 7.7 Owners.
Today I stopped by the Verizon store to check on an issue I previously posted regarding the proximity sensor (I do not there there is one installed in the i815 despite the Samsung website claims to the contrary).
So anyway, I picked up the Tab 7.7 on display and opened the market to install an app that uses the proximity sensor (it did not work BTW).
!!! However... !!!
While in the Market, big as life, I could easily see the home screen image burned into the display. I opened several other apps and all had the same effect. I even rebooted the device to see if it might be some software bug that was ghosting the image somehow, but the problem persisted. The home screen is simply burned into this device. Now this probably stays on 24 hours per day however, I was surprised to see that modern devices could suffer from this ancient problem.
So...
If you leave your device plugged in for some time, be sure to let the screen time out. (Settings>Applications>Stay Awake> leave unchecked)
I just decided to get rid of both of my Samsung docks I purchased.
Doug M.

All of my amoled devices have burn in and they are all set on lowest brightness. I try to minimize the burn in on my p6800 by hiding the status bar.

SAMOLED is different with your LED backlit IPAD display.. it's not a matter of Cheap Vs Apple premium, if your IPAD have the same AMOLED screen, even thought it's an Apple, it'll exhibit burn in issues as well.

Strange that my tablet is on all day as my desktop clock and live album and gaming/movie at night, but still no burn in appeared yet (except that mystical faint circles that every unit has). I think you could just take yours to local service center and spill all your guts out to force them to have screen replaced. Just my little two cents.

crap argument of an apple fanboy: ipad uses IPS-LCD, 7.7 features AMOLED (hd plus blabla).
in contrary: amoled is the FAR more expensive tech, although it tends to burn in (which is tech immanent and can't be eliminated totally)!
inform yourself before posting such nonsense!

Hi boys.
Maybe we should shut this thread down. No need to start a pointless flame war.
My only intention was to let people know that the screen burn-in on this device can certainly happen as I saw it very clearly on the in-store demo unit.
I just thought people might want to know so you can moderate your usage patterns to avoid the problem.

Oh I read yours wrong...I thought you said YOUR unit has burnt-in.
Nevertheless I think your post should remain open. I'm quite amazed that how quickly someone would jump into any post to compare Apple's product against everything, just to be shot by facts. This isn't bad at all.

Is nexus 7 quality that bad?

I've ordered one and I'm looking around here and.. what happens with this tablet? 90% of them have an important screen / battery / software problem?
I am REALLY scared of what I am receiving after reading this section...
Don't be, the number of people on XDA are but a small percentage of those that purchase the tablet.
I bought mine very early on, my friend bought his just recently from a completely different retailer and he has no issues.
If you read enough and look hard enough, you may convince yourself something is wrong with your tablet when there may not be.
So get your device, enjoy using it, and is there something really wrong with it if when using it, everything is working as it should?
nope, i LOVE my N7! i use it almost everyday...more so than my acer iconia 10". the N7 is fast, light, and screen is awesome. the ONLY thing i dont like is the non-standard charging "mechanism" that it uses. i hate not being able to just grab a normal micro usb cord and charger and just charging it. other than that...no complaints.
Quality is great.
Go for it!
I've had mine since day one and no problems at all. Not only that, but I've installed it in the dash of my car and it's held up great.
No its no bad. There are defective devices out there. But the quality is not bad f you get a working one. That sorta contradicts its self but you know what i mean.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
When you have 1% of devices that could potentially be lemons... coupled with the fact a substantial amount of that 1% are XDA members... it's easy for a device to look bad when in the grand scheme of things, it's not. Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly a non-frustrated user. My screen magically cracked today somewhere between me holding it at the kitchen counter vs walking to my car, yet I never dropped it. That doesn't deter me away from buying another one since after all, mine was from the first gen batch, which if an issue is going to exist... it'll be there.
if you picky about minor issue, i think you should wait till at least October to be sure the problem is fixed. My has a minor screen lifted and there is a little static noise when turn the screen on/off. Other than that, it a good tablet. Yeah go for it.
Screen lift is ridiculously common, but that's the only really popular issue. Fortunately, there are flush screens out there, and it's not guaranteed to be a serious problem down the road even if you do get one that's a little loose on the left side.
Although there are fewer reports of lift in C8 units, the underlying cause has not been addressed. There was a big thread about this earlier today.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856203
I had three units with screen lift and was unwilling to tolerate it, so now I'm waiting to repurchase until they get this cleared up. If you read through the first two pages of that thread you'll find that I asked the first person who claimed to have a flush C8 unit for photo verification, and that photo revealed screen lift. That was disappointing. I was hoping these newer ones with updated packaging were mostly fixed.
Most people who claim to have flush screens haven't actually checked, but that says something about how minor it usually is. Since you ordered from the Play store, you won't have to deal with ASUS if the worst case scenario happens (a cracked screen), and a hair of separation shouldn't prevent you from enjoying an otherwise great device, so long as you're confident in the warranty.
It really is a great tablet. I wish I'd kept my second unit from the Play store, the one with the least separation, because I really enjoyed having it.

Well, keep in mind that when people who are not XDA regulars have a problem they hit up Google and XDA links are generally on the top of the list for ANY Android device, so they come here to ask and/or complain about it. Then you have XDA regulars who tend to be techie types who are VERY picky about having perfection in their toys. So things the average Joe wouldn't even know is a problem can come across like its the end of the world. Finally, as many point out, you only see the problems because people don't generally come here to post "everything's fine" unless they are being snarky (like a thread I posted a while back) or just that rare person who does that sort of thing...usually as a counter balance to all the negative posts.

It's like if you visit a new country and the first thing you do is walk into a hospital... "what's wrong with this country? Everyone here is sick."
This forum is where the few people who have problems gather to discuss them, and they are a very small percentage of Nexus 7 owners. It's just that people for whom the device is working fine don't post every day and talk about their experience, while people having problems do.
Okay, thank you everyone for your replies!
It's a shame but I think what you say is true: even if this is a hi-grade tecnology forum, only the people with problems talk and talk about them, while the people without problems only reply them maybe some times and never talks about that anymore.
Anyway, I kinda hate when you guys say "Mine is ok! only the left side is a bit loose", "Its great! only the screen fails after 2h of use", "Its amazing, yet the screen cracks everytime time I touch it on this sire.."
250~$ is not enough to expect a FULL QUALITY DEVICE? I owned an iPad and a Galaxy Tab and I had never had to expect or to suffer a minor problem, and you're talking about really important screen problems (a curved / loosing side / cracking side / etc. screen has A LOT of more % of cracking, or getting dead pixels, or having another problems).
I honestly don't understand that mentallity. We are not talking about a 5$ device (and even there we could have a discussion), ¡¡its more than 250 dollars!!
I think that if this problems happen is because people accepts it like that.

How many other people are going to read a thread about defects other than the ones with defects?

Nexus 7 3G Defects - here!

Hello people!
As we all know the nexus 7 32gb 3G has shipped!, This is for everyone who has the Nexus 7 -3G- version only!
Do you have an issue with anything of your nexus 7 components (screen issues - build issues - speaker, etc ...) that are found on the previous builds of the nexus 7 non 3G ?
Did you guys find something that you like or you feel is better than the one with the previous build or non 3G (if you own a non 3G nexus)
like say, Faster, snppier, better graphics, performance etc ..
Sorry for my not so bad English
Just had 2 3Gs arrive to replace my old 16Gb wifis
Both perfect in every way, (Saying that so were my wifis)
Only comment is (Are google trying to get apple to sue them over the sim removal tool!!!)

Oh the reason Google are stating that Cases for the wifi nexus 7 are not compatible with the 3G version is that the Mic has moved due to the microsim slot so the flap on the cases covers trhe mic on the 3G version.

This seems a little pessimistic to me. Why assume they are going to have tons of defects? Won't google/asus have learned from the mistakes they made with the early wifis?
I didn't mean to be pessimistic at all .. just scared of that feeling when you wait so badly for that shiny device that you ever wanted but only to figure out that you have to sooooo lucky to get a (well-made) one without any defect !! I hate QC.
i see the need for this very much,
i just got the 32gb wifi only and maaaann.... the feel to the tab is just...different like the back panel feels...better i cant really explain it the unit feels heavier too.
Got mine this-morning. No defects at all. Why would you expect any? The Wifi version has been out for ages so any major defects would have been caught long ago by the early adopters.
The only "defect" per-se is deciding what the best deal on a SIM card is... 3 is probably the best network... but what one to order? All rather confusing for a poor old mouse brain.

I got mine last night. It has some backlight bleeding and also has these funky faded streaks (hard to explain) on a black screen these streaks give the blacks a washed out appearance. I compared it to my 16GB N7 which I got in Aug and I didn't notice these streaks but do have backlight bleeding on that one. I'm actually getting it replaced for these streaks but I've come to expect and even accept(as long as it's not horrible) backlight bleeding on Asus tablets. Having owned the TF101 (3 of them) the TF201(3 of them) and the infinity I have not came across a single one that didn't have some backlight bleeding to an extent or another. Some having it much worse while others maybe having just a small spot in the corner. But I honestly have not seen a single one (mine or a friend's) that didn't have backlight bleeding to some extent.
Mine has some very slight backlight bleeding, but nothing I'd complain about. Unfortunately, it does have the blown speaker issue...so an RMA replacement is on its way.
I bought a 2nd Nexus 7 3G version and all the issue of my 16gb WiFi are gone... The main problem the light flickering which is gone totally, also the screen is now flat with the bezel finally.
Sent from my Nexus 7 3G
Mine is fine overall. There seems to be some slight backlight bleeding on the left side of the screen, but not major enough to RMA.
Speaker sounds fine too as far as I can tell. The only "issue" I think I can report is that when my tablet has been sleeping for a long time, the mobile data will cut itself back on if it's off. At least the mobile data works though. Anyone else experience this?

I forgot to mention that I have noticed my screen flickering a bit when in 'auto', and depending on the ambient light. It's almost like the screen can't decide where to set itself and is bouncing between 'levels'. The problem seems to go away completely when I just turn off the auto lighting and keep it at minumum (which is how I usually use it). Is this the screen flickering problem everyone keeps talking about?

Just got my replacement an hour ago. Body creaks less, bezel appears slightly more even (although the old one was really even to begin with), and speaker sounds MUCH better. Only slight buzzing from the 'notification' volume bar, default tone, at max. Everything else sounds clear. I'll have to watch the screen to see about flicker. I have noticed it switching levels, but haven't noticed it flicker yet. It also appears to have less light bleeding. So far so good...
Ok guys - I need an opinion. I've had some time to play with my replacement N7, and noticed some odd things. I ran the battery down last night just to make sure it wasn't a dud - got about 10hrs of video (minimum brightness, sound down). It's not as good as my first one, but I don't consider it a dud. However, after it died, I plugged it in. A half hour later, I tried to power it on to collect the batter logs (simple battery logger), and it wouldn't power on. I pressed the power button for 5 sec each time, nothing. No white battery charging logo either...just unresponsive. I kept trying and it finally booted. I think I had to hold the button for 10-15 sec - and the battery was charging and at 10%. Never happened like that with my old one - just a consistent 4 second press to power on. Does this thing need 10% before it will power on? Reading the forums, the power on issue seems to be common. Should I be worried about this? Should I just keep my original unit even though the speakers are bad? I really don't want to end up in the endless replacement loop. Do others here have occasional power up glitches?

Moto X Screen burn-in

I bought my Moto X around the end of September and about two weeks after getting it, I had a screen burn-in from the notification bar and navigation bar. I let Motorola know and they happily replaced it. However few weeks after owning the second one I experienced the issue again and I let them know. They told me they were stunned and that I was literally the only person who had reported the issue.
What I am wondering is if anyone else has experienced this. I know it is a common problem with AMOLEDs, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon.

I saw burn in on a display model at Best Buy. It was the big Motorola M logo that displays at the boot animation. If you looked at a white web page or any solid, but light colored image, you could see the ghostly circle the size of a quarter complete with the swishy M in the middle of the screen. Got them to open a second demo model and boot it up so I could see a clean screen and bring it to their attention. Weird thing to have burned in, too.

Op did you leave both phones display on for 2weeks straight at 100% brightness? Lol
I have had mine for 2 months, do at least 4 hours sot daily, most of which is on reddit and xda, so nav and status are almost always static... I have zero sign of burn in.
I had it pretty good on my s3, but I blame ingress for that... Being outside playing so much and had it at 100% brightness because that screen was so dark... Even then it took at least 2 months before I saw any burn in and I was playing A LOT!
Can't imagine how you would get burn in on two devices, each in two weeks... Seems like that's a feat that you have to try and do, lol.

I'd be hard pressed to believe this as well... I've had numerous amoled devices and abused the crap out of them and even then, it took months to get any sort it noticeable burn in... If it were one device then I wouldn't second guess it, chalk it up to manufacture defect... But two in a row? I'm curious as to what the op uses his phones for and if he ever turns off the screens... Even store display models take a while to get burn in and they are on 3-4 times as much as a typical power user.

I'll have to send you a pic of my GNex then, so you can see the perfect "ghost" of a Pandora logo in the middle of the screen from running the display full time in my car dock.
I also remember similar complaints when the GNex first came out, of people claiming they were getting burn-in on the notification bar area, and I thought they were ridiculous at the time. Now, not so much.
It happened to my gnex, so I'm not surprised that it happened on this phone too.
I'm not saying you're faking it, but 2 weeks is a little too soon for it to be happening. The gnex only had the issue after a year or so. Are you keeping the display on all the time when charging or something?
They will eventually burn in if you set the screen to never time out and leave it displaying the same thing for hours or days on end. Most store models have some level of burn it. In normal use cases it should never be an issue though.

Just passing by, but 2 weeks is entirely possible.
If you keep using the phone with the notification bar displayed and then two weeks later open a full screen browser, you will most likely notice burn in if you look close enough.
It's extremely easy to do.
I bought an S3 from ebay with real bad screen burn in (that the seller didn't mention). She actually didn't believe me and accused me of scamming her until I replied back with a contact name and number that was burned into the top of the screen from the messaging app (the keyboard was also burned in, I guess she constantly texted this person).
I think burn in is more likely to happen when brightness is higher. I had a GNex and GS3 that never got any sort of burn in but I also rarely had the brightness above 50%.
you know, now that I look, I have it too. It's faint, and I thought it was from the Nova Launcher beta, but ****, this is screen burn in. Damn.
---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:13 PM ----------
I don't even use my phone that much. Generally around 1.5 or 2 hours screen time per day. Brightness is about half. Kinda crazy.
Recommend using an app such as:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.feetstech.screenburn&hl=en
to minimize this. Most plasma TV's have something like this built in as they are also prone to burn-in. Use it for 10 minutes every once in a while (even if you don't see burn in) and it should prevent it.
I got screen burn in on my S4 after 2 months. But I also blame ingress for that. I have a X coming and hope to minimize that by not playing ingress so much or play on another device. One thing that I do for the status bar to help out is with nova launcher I have it set to swipe the notification bar on top away. I try to leave it off the screen as much as possible. But yes amoled screens suck for burn in.
I usually turn my phone to the 270 degree position to have the navigation bars switch sides every now and then. That helps a bit.
And with AMOLEDs, it's more important to turn off the screen when not in use rather than let it time out. I have mine set to 10 minutes, but I usually manually turn off the screen because I know AMOLEDs are prone to burn-in over time.

Tablet Z2? Stay Away!

That's it I'm really disappointed with this device.
First the touch problem.
Then there's also some weird problems with charging (touch response is close to zero when charging with some chargers, doesn't charge when using power hungry apps) and the sound delay.
And now there's some yellow spots showing on the screen. Mine goes back to Sony for warranty, but for those considering getting this device, I'd advise against it.

Well , I pre-ordered mine and I got it since march. Touch has sure improved since then but it is still light-years behind my old Acer Iconia A500.
Just try it with a multi-touch test app. Even with the 4.4.4 firmware it still cannot register more than 3-4 finger consistently when you move them around.
My aging Iconia does not drop a single touch.

Did I say anywhere to stay away from Sony devices? What I said is stay away from the Tablet Z2. After almost 7 month of ownership I can definitely say if I could send it back I would.
The yellow tint issue is just the one drop too many. I was thrilled by the device at first (although annoyed by the touch issue): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51450622
Not anymore.
I am pretty sure the touch screen issue while charging is from a low quality charger. If you are getting a lot of AC ripple, it will completely flip out.
A good way to test this is to use an external battery pack. If the issue goes away, then buy a real high quality charger.

Your post makes it sounds like I'm kinda dumb.
I tried with three different external battery packs and about a dozen chargers.
I experienced problems even with the stock charger. It is not even the best of my chargers for this device.
I'm not the only one with issues with charging:

Op has a right to complain, as long as it stays within the boundaries of XDA rules. So I remind everybody to keep the peace. If the thread gets out of hand, it will be closed.
OP, it's very unfortunate you've had so many issues with your device. I hope you can get them sorted out with Sony. I would suggest constantly communicating with them, and perhaps they will take it back into service. At least that's what they should do, for devices with multiple issues. Take it up with higher management if need be.
So keep it civil folks. Please.

I had the yellow tint, Sony had my screen replaced only took 5 days.
I think the problems are not usually for this tablet. I have mine long-time and no problem with touch, yellow tint or charging in normal . But charging only if I use docking station with those two contacts to charge the tablet. If on micro usb port with power adapter charging gets slower and the device sometimes is less responding to touch.
But I agree that if having those named problems, the tablet would get useless in a way and I would try to get it "corrected" by Sony or seller of the device.

I bought it in March, the day it came out in HK.
After about a month, i realised that there were green dots, tiny ones on the edges of the screen.
Anyway, i made a post about it a few months ago, but long story short,
My screen got replaced in less than half a day. Dropped it off before lunch at sony centre with a repair center, and got it back in the same afternoon.
I am assuming that yours is still under warranty. Maybe you could do the same?
I bought mine un June, and i don't have any of the issues people describe (usually with early units), my screen registers 10 fingers moving on screen consistently, one of the first thing i did after purchase was install the MultiTouch Tester app to check, also i have no yellow tint or anything like that.
I have been a Sony customer for a long time ago, and i know wht happens with Sony devices, first units always have flaws, i had one early Xperia Z, and i, and a lot of other early customers, got battery charging problems, dead pixels, dodgy loudspeaker, and stuff... The first PS3 fat models, i really doubt there is one left alive in the world. This time i waited some months before purchase the Tablet Z2, and it seems i did the right thing.
Seems like the op was trying to troll us, but didn't get much of a response! ?

Yeah. It is. I sent it Thursday afternoon and it already came back this morning.
That was incredibly quick. I haven't had the time to play with it much yet to check if all issues are resolved but that sure is great customer service.
By the way my tablet was unlocked and rooted (I re-locked and unrooted before sending it back) but still under warranty .

I wouldn't say so. They changed the screen so no more yellow spot... but touch response feel even worse, charging problems persists.
I won't add any fuel to the fire , seems like some would rather I shut up, but I 'm terribly disappointed with this device. Great customer service though...
Is there any way to delete this thread?

Hey, nobody wishes you to delete the thread.
If there are issues, then they need to be known. I'm really sorry you have some problems. For the most part, it seems some folks don't have the same. But, that doesn't mean you "don't" have a lemon tab. And lemon products "do" happen.
If the tab is not charging correctly, then there's an issue.
Does it charge somewhat correctly from a USB Computer charge?
Sony, is probably one of the most consumer friendly organizations.
I can say, having owned an Iconia A701, is that when dealing with high performance tabs, the touch responsiveness, well, it leaves much to be desired. And at times, you had to tap more than once to get the response. NOT GOOD when playing a game.
In the first weeks, I also had the touch problems.
It was really a shame and totally unacceptable that Sony denied the existence of the touch problem and needed so long to release a fix.
The customer service of Sony is abysmal.
BUT: Since the firmware which fixed the touch problem I'm VERY satisfied with the tablet! It's simply a joy to use and to look at, and of all my devices, it runs by far the most stable and consistent and has by far the best and most consistent battery run time.
So I recommend it!

Warranty claims for screen burn?

I've got some incredibly bad screen burn with the whole bottom 2 thirds of screen gone yellow and I'm returning phone to Samsung in the freepost envelope they sent but has anyone had experience dealing with Samsung with this to know what to expect?
Doubt they'll replace it under warranty for burn-in, such is the way of the beast with AMOLED screens if you leave the same thing on the screen constantly, but good luck
How did it even became like that? I had an amoled TV for years and it didn't even exhibit this problem even when it's on most of the day...

Leaving the same image on the screen constantly, with a TV, the picture is always moving, if OP uses a certain app 24/7, like facebook or something, the majority of that image remains the same, sidebar, top bar, etc etc, only text changes
Basically we're back to the old green screen issues and why we ended up with screensavers on PCs
EDIT - In fact it looks like touchwiz launcher is partially responsible, along with the top notification bar, my guess is OP sets screen timeout to highest, and keeps the screen on the same thing constantly through the day, full brightness likely too

hence the reason they wont fix it cause its his fault.
and were assumi9ng the reason the android tv didnt do it is because it didnt use amoled
I do use full brightness and most of the use is from Chrome browser and Youtube but the screen is set to a 2 minute timeout so certainly isn't left alone for long periods.
So I'm not using the phone in any abnormal way that would go against any usage terms that maybe in the warranty, and the really dark burning in the middle by any standard could be said the phone is no longer fit for purpose because it's well beyond any acceptable wear and tear.
Just been on the phone to Samsung and they said clearly that the warranty does cover this so soon as I get the chance I'll either go to the Local Samsung store or post it in.
Thanks for the update. Definitely not normal and using your phone is not grounds for disregarding the warranty. Brightness is there to use. There is no disclaimer stating you can harm your phone by making your screen too bright. Where do people get this stuff?
This is the first time since my Nexus 1 that I've seen any phone with burn in. Thought we were all past that.

you dont really need a disclaimer to know that screen burn exists, a simple understanding of science does that. and we were speculating about the warranty issues
Well done Michael P. I have the same issue on my 10 month old Galaxy S7 Edge. I use Google Maps constantly for business purposes, and now have screen burn. Despite Pilot's sarcastic answer, not every one is a super geek with a pre-existing knowledge of Amoled screen inner workings. My BSc degree and Masters were in other subjects, and screen technology has never interested or bothered me. When I buy a product I expect it to work perfectly for at least a year. A clear warning when buying the product saying "do not leave on a static screen for more than X amount of minutes" would have caused me to educate myself on the pitfalls of S7 screens, and Samsung would not be forking get out to send me a new phone free of charge.
I have the same problem

I hope I'm writing in the right place, but I've had the same problem since a few months after buying my S7 edge. I keep my screen at 50% & have a 2 min timeout that I never use. I always turn my phone off when I'm done... force of habit. The top of the screen dimmed greatly at first and then almost immediately after, I've had this ghost keyboard. Ugh. I'm a photog, so editing is a nightmare. I didn't buy the warranty & my 2 yr contract is almost up. I've had this issue for well over a year & had no idea I could do anything. I'm guessing it's too late to complain. I've been so mad about this darn phone for so long. Such a huge disappointment for such an enormous expense. I'm not a phone junkie, but I do use whatsapp quite a bit to talk to my husband when he's away. I have pictures but I'm new and can't find the button to post them. It sure would be nice to get a new phone. I hate this issue. It drives me crazy. I'm sorry to all who are stuck with this yucky problem. Thank you for letting me rant. Have a blessed day, everyone.
