Hey everyone,
I have an issue with my tablet that I'd like to confirm is a hardware defect, if others have seen a similar issue, or if what I'm seeing is really a defect at all.
When I use the full pad of my thumb or index finger on the touchscreen, the touchscreen doesn't seem to recognize there's only one touch input on the screen (or one touch input staying in one place). Check out the video I took of it:
Does the problem happen when you've got a finger touching the headphone jack? If not, this is a known grounding problem. More info in the topic about "crossing axis" in the discussion forum.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
This is a known problem and nexus 7 does this when one use his whole thumb. Mine also do the same and I have discussed it many people here before and people have most confirm to have this issue. Some people fail to accept that their device has faults so they just say no to anything.

Agreed. I can confirm this issue as well and it's likely to exist in all devices.
Thanks, everyone. Bit of a shame since it's such a high quality tablet otherwise.
Asking a mod to close the thread. I'll follow the 'crossing axis' thread instead.

I've noticed that on my NS, I don't have to actually touch the screen to tap keys. I can keep my finger slightly hovering over the glass and it still recognizes my input. Sometimes it actually causes me to mistype at a higher rate than other phones.
Are you guys seeing this too?

Glad to see I'm not the only one who's experienced this....I thought I was going crazy. It's sporadic at best, but when it happens it is annoying. I can't say for sure what causes it, but I'd love to hear other people's opinions.
I've been getting this as well.
same here. Guess they have the capacitance set a bit too high.....
yup, me too. infact. my home button gets phatom long pressed and the light is off on it...have to power it off/ turn the screen off and on muliple times. that insanity has occured about 4 times thought.
Thanks for the replies. I went back into Best Buy and tried their demo phone. So either it's supposed to be this way or they messed up a whole batch of phones. I wish I could remember whether the vibrant did this or not, but it's not standing out.
Sometimes touchscreen nonresponsive too. This is not relating to partial outer border touching either.

I believe Engadget did mention did this during their review @ http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/.
Their exact quote: "One other thing of note -- we noticed a few missed or latent presses on the touchscreen which occasionally led to stuttery behavior or an opened item that we didn't mean to tap. It's hard to say if this was a software or hardware issue (and we know that sometimes Android devices can be particularly finicky when syncing). It wasn't a deal-breaker by any means, but we saw the issue rear its head a handful of times, and felt it was worth mentioning."
it's nothing ,, the Samsung galaxy S does that too D:
that happens due to the static on your finger.
Hi
I opened a thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=879872) because I definitely have a problem on the back capacitive button, just wondering how many people are affected?
In fact I have seen this in four devices now, it looks that there is a batch of defective Nexus S phones out there affected by this problem?
It's normal. My Nexus One is like that too. It's magic.
So, it is normal to have un-responsive back button after some times?
Damn ... this is bad. I hope I can cope with it. I really hate hardware problem.
And still could not understand why Google cannot fix it.
Last time from HTC ...
And now from Samsung ...

There's a thread for the back button, that's a real issue. Some people have the Back button issue, some the Home button issue. Both of those buttons are on the outer edge of the phone, so something may be messed up when the phone was being assembled.
So my first transformer was awesome except for the touchscreen that was unresponsive on a whole line across the tablet, the minimal light bleed, and the unbalanced speakers. I decided to rma it with ASUS and sent it back.
I just got it back today. The shipping paper shows a new part for a screen (I'm guessing.. 90R-OK061L20000Y). I immediately installed a multi touch and paint app to check the screen only to find an almost identical unresponsive section of the screen (on both it was unresponsive to the lightest of touch only. Heavy touches still registered.)
My question to my fellow Transformer owners is should I RMA again? Maybe switch to the galaxy tab? Hope its software related and wait for a fix? Our just ignore it?
Anyone else have this problem?

The Transformer is nice especially with dock if all works well, mine does, but if that were me I'd be unloading it and getting a Galaxy 10.1.
I just tested mine with the same paint program. I colored the whole screen with 1 finger and everything seems to be in order. Funny how that program registers 7 finger multitouch but 8 will cause a FC.
Anyway. I would RMA it again. This time stating that the problem wasn't fixed. Maybe put a bunch of post-it notes with arrows all pointing to the spot there it is whacked.

If this really is an issue only with "lightest of touch" I think you would be better off selling the unit. Touch screens often have areas that require more or less contact. The fact that they replaced the screen or digitizer and it does not meet your expectations suggests the settings they are using will not meet your expectations as to the amount of contact required.
Just a quick question, wherever you guys bought your transformer, did anyone buy a warranty through the retailer? Personally I work a BestBuy, so a 1 year with damage warranty was dirt cheap for me, so i bought it, normally I dont get the plans bc I treat my gadgets like angels, but with a 10 inch screen thats only protected by glass I thought I should, especially with all the defects from ASUS going around (although mines working perfect!).
Well as an example when trying to launch an app along the line a hard press is required

Could it be a problem with your fingers? Seems strange you have had problems with 2 lol
Are you saying my fingers is brokeded!?!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
he's saying you touched it wrong
well I would insist on a replacement if the issue is still there. You would of thought they would of tested this before it was returned to you.
I would of thought it would be other hardware other than the screen that is defective and they have simply replaced the incorrect part.
I called asus again and they game another rma. They paid for doing too, that's nice. hoping for a fix though.

Since Nexus 4 has been released one thing is key problem of this phone is touch sensitivity.
So anyone knows how to fix it or is that a hardware problem.
Thank you

If you take a look in the Original Android Development section, you'll see that there are kernels that claim to fix it. You could always try flashing one of those. I never had any problems with the touch sensitivity anyway. Yes, the screen's a little less sensitive than my Galaxy S's screen, but it's only a minor difference. It didn't even take any getting used to.
Hey all,
I bought the Nexus 7 from Best Buy on release day. The first one I got had banding issues (so I thought) but it turns out where I was seeing it in the settings is common and has to do with the background used from what I found out after I exchanged it. The one I got now has bad backlight bleed and the screen seems blurry. Not sure what's up with that.
My question is, will Best Buy care if I go exchange the device again? I'd rather not be stuck with an actual defective one. Thanks!

Okay, awesome. Hopefully I don't get a worse unit than before. Sucks because the first one was perfect and I returned it lol

I'm about to return mine and wait until they get more in stock, the screen on my Nexus 7 32GB is sometimes not recognizing my touches , sometimes have to press really hard on the screen just for it to recognize, and even then it isn't 100% accurate.
Something is off with the touch sensitivity tuning. I remember reading that 4.3 brought increased sensitivity to the N4, maybe the N7 is starting out extra sensitive. I've noticed it most with the default keyboard. It sometimes double types a single character. What's happening is that it recognizes my finger before I actually hit the glass, and then again when I hit it. But this should be fixable with an update.
I wish android would allow touch sensitivity user customization, something like on Nokia's Lumia WP8 phones.

I exchanged mine today for this exact issue and the new one has the same problem. Wonder if this can be fixed with an update?

I'm unsure about the touchscreen issues. That typically results from bad connections or somewhere. Have you tried Yet Another multi touch App?
It has 2 functions, one tests inputs the other is like a paint. I recommend trying to color the entire screen. This will tell you if you have any dead spots.
If your touchscreen isn't working well I highly recommend you swap it out. What good is a tablet if the problem gets worse?

I'm having the exact same problem with the keyboard... while typing, i would get rapid taps and some letters would show up 3 or 4 times. just wondering if this is a hardware issue or software issue?
If its a software issue, i can wait it out... but if its hardware.. i'll go and exchange it for a new one.
Just curious if anybody else was experiencing problems with their touches registering lower than where they were actually touching. Mine registers just lower and to he right of where I'm actually contacting the screen. Its not a deal breaker because otherwise I've got no issues but can get rather annoying when trying to select small links or icons.
If this is just an issue with mine is it hardware related or can it be fixed with software?

I don't. Sounds like yours is defective.

Did, returned, got a better unit that's acceptable. Still giving multiple taps/inaccurate taps at random, but it's a hell of a lot better than my first one. I can keep it and deal with it now.

I noticed a LOT of touch inacuracies in relation to the keyboard initially (touch "a" and would get "aaa," for example) but using SwiftKey Flo more or less corrected the issue for me (I'm sure the swype-like feature of the stock keyboard may have done the same).
Does OP have a screen protector? Sometimes I've seen that happen on other devices with certain protectors but not others.
Again, Google.. Really?
I'm very disappointed to see that others are experiencing this problem. I am hoping that it won't be too persistent.. It's not crippling at this point. Were you rooted when you returned yours? Here's hoping that I won't have to return this thing.. I'm in love.
Well, it's gotten to the point that I can't stand the inaccuracies and it's almost crippling considering I cannot type posts without having issues at some point. Going to have to return and hope the next one I get is better or just sell it off and see if updates or hardware revisions alleviate the issue.
Asus and google really dropped the ball with the QC on these screen components. I normally prefer not to be an early adopter but the sales tempted me, and I guess it isn't all bad since I can still sell this for more than I paid if I have no luck with replacements.
I'm wondering if it really is a QC problem, or if this is just the way the tablet was made to keep the cost low. It really does look more and more like a (cheap) hardware issue at this point.

Interesting. That's probably why my stylus won't work on it.

Very nice find, thanks for sharing! After reading that, I am definitely going to play the waiting game in hopes of a simple software update/hotfix. Here's hoping for a quick fix, but I'll gladly wait so that I can keep this beautiful tool.
I have it too new as of today N7
No touchscreen problems here.
